Why can't a SINGLE back gesture close the keyboard and go to the previous screen?
like how it is on iOS
Can someone help me with this .. provided the details below ....
Example:
when you're on an app like Instagram or Whatsapp.
while typing the keyboard is open.
we need to swipe back "twice" to go back.
1st to close the keyboard
2nd to go back to the previous screen.
Solution:
Swipe back "Once" it closes the keyboard and goes to the previous screen.

For people who want to collapse keyboard:
There's a dedicated small button on Samsung/Swift Keyboard to do the same ... It will collapse the keyboard only... On OnePlus there's a small black bar in the bottom for this.
Or
a simple Swipe Down gesture on the keyboard can collapse the keyboard. On OnePlus there's a small black bar in the bottom for this.
Thanks.
And what if you just want to close the keyboard and don't want to go a screen back???
I really don't see the need for this just because "that's how it is on iOS". This is Andoid, not iOS.
And "modders on XDA should be the first to implement this" , ehh no, that's not how it works.
You could ask one politely, maybe he or she can help but i think it's not that easy...

Buy a iPhone

Thanks but i didnt want the feature because its on iPhone ... i love android and been using it since 10years.
The chances of people wanting to close keyboard is lesser than people wanting to go back.
thats a universal fact.
also if people just want to close the keyboard then can close it with a swipe down gesture.... also OnePlus has a black bar below to close KB
also like Samsung has implemented a button to close its keyboard.
i maybe a new member here on xda but im not new to the modding community.... i just came back to xda cause i dont remember my old ID which i used to access here when i was into installing custom roms etc.
So please be polite. and remember.
The back gesture that Android have baked in by swiping the edges was once done by an app called fluid navigation. So every new feature was one criticized until it becomes a norm
I used that app. also contacted the dev. they said it cannot be done by an app but a MOD.
I wonder how hard this would be to implement. Find in the code where a back button triggers keyboardclose(), then replace that with keyboardclose() + back()
That being said I actually prefer the current implementation LOL

Not so sure you speak for everyone to say that is some universal fact.
I personally like to close the keyboard first because a lot of times I want the keyboard gone so I can have more screen available to read and not have to scroll as much. And how the heck is it so hard to just swipe twice? I guess there's always someone that's gotta b!tch about something.

mind your language please .... if you did not like the feature you did not require to reply to it
its not iOS and Android war ... each one adapts features from one another ..... iOS had edge swipe back since 5 years ... Android realised it late and incorporated it in Android 10 ... Sooner or later they will add this too ... i asked in this forum cause i was expecting a mod. I come from a bigger "retired smartphone" list than yours ... I'm just not a developer but a businessman.
Also you do not know ... this feature wasn't baked into iOS ... it was a Jailbreak tweak which was later adapted by iOS default ... So please understand everyone adapts better and easier ways of navigation. If you wanna stick to the past we can never move to the future .... Be tech loyal ... not brand loyal.

not sure how you figure that is universal fact ('chances of people wanting to close keyboard is lesser than people wanting to go back') and I find IOS's version of the back button (and navigation for that matter) VERY ars-backwards.

No matter what you say ... its happening sooner or later...

You could see they are bringing changes to the keyboard .. it has a collapse button on bottom left .... thus their next step would obviously be to go back directly when done a back gesture.... In XDA few members have sent me a DM regarding what an awesome feature and help me connect with Android devs .... and I've sent them the suggestion ... Thanks

As a compact phone enthusiast like me, collapse keyboard is crucial function to have. For example when chatting in WhatsApp, after i type and send a chat, i would read the replies. But with small form factor i need to hide the keyboard to see the texts.
I agree iPhone handle this situation perfectly. On android, you can hide and go back simultaneously using Xposed module name Swypeback 2. Give it a try. :good:

I'm on t-mobile and really didn't want to give up my G1 until another Android phone was available with a hardware keyboard. However, I did just purchase the Nexus One (no plan... $80/month data was ridiculous) and was wondering if anyone has had any luck finding the CooTek TouchPal virtual keyboard?
I used to use it on my last (and only) WMo device and liked it. I know they released a beta in the android marketplace but stopped offering it because it was OEM software on the T-Mobile pulse and wasn't going to be re-released in the marketplace until after the launch of that phone.
Was hoping someone had an older copy that might be compatible w the N1.
I have 1.1.0. Not sure if that will work on the N1, but you're welcome to try it. PM me and I can send you a link.

I was bout 2 make the leap 2 Android from windows mobile, and touchpal was gone make it alot easier. I see it was pulled so I looked on there forums, and all there saying is it will be an updated version up soon, like the 4.0 wm version. That post was at the end of Nov. so I don't know what up, just gotta wait I guess..

Hi, I saw your post about TouchPal for android . Was wondering if I could get a link from u? I've been trying soo hard to find them for my n1. Appreciate it!!
It's available for me on the Singapore Android Market, searched for "touchpal" and it's the first of two options.
Yeah.. It's not as good as it was in WM, it lags a lot and has some quirkiness. I keep it installed to watch for updates.
I still type the fastest on the HTC IME..
This is an old thread. Hope you guys got on the swype beta. There's also swift key on the market.

I feel like we are only thinking one sided, android devices should be able to boot windows mobile. I would do it but I dont know where to start.
maybe i will try and flash a wm6.5.3 wqvga rom to mytouch 3g and see what happens since they have native capacitative support in the os now.
somebody mind pointing me in the right direction?
wtf would you want windows on this? i would point you in direction of buying a windows device
only for try..i want to try win mob. on my magic..i don't like win but if i can choose with a bootloader if start android or win mob. ............so WoooW
if win mob is hard to port...we can try to port iOs... no??
(sorry for my bad english, i'm italian)
if Apple users can port Android on iFron, why we can't port iOS on Android devices???
I don't like WM either, but i think it would be nice to see iOS on Android...but in my opinion it is impossible.. if it was possible, somebody would do it already..
lele5800, because Android is open operating system, you can modify sources and build it for any device.
iOS and WM are closed..

you see you all miss the strong points of windows mobile. not only could i open view and edit office files i could open and send directly from my email (outlook mobile) i have a mytouch 3g and honestly dont like it even with froyo. the only reason i got this lacking device is because i broke my touch pro2
there are so many things I can do that i cant do on android with out a force close.
and if android is soo "cool" why not run windows mobile for people that need that good office integration for work since jobs are hard to find here in america.
I thought it would be a good idea. android to me is for people who would like to seem smart with out the need of actual know how.
the developers on the other hand seem smart to me remembering all the sudo command lol
but I seen my personal compatibility flaws with android when i couldnt open a docx or a doc file directly from my email and/or save it where I wanted to.
so dont down me for wanting better integration.
android looks nice. thats about it. the keyboard onscreen likes to close on its own and never come back. too often. so please if you arent helping the port dont say that other chitter chatter. cause the **** don't matter.

What the flying **** are you talking about? If you hate Android so much sell your myTouch3G and GTFO.
All the "flaws" your talking about aren't even real issues. File manager? Did you spend 1 minute looking through the market for a file manager app?
Opening the limitation to opening a docx file is part of the design by Microsoft why the **** would they want people to be able to open and edit documents with software that isn't getting them money? And why the **** would you want to edit your docs on a 3.2inch touch screen. FAIL
The Keyboard likes to close and never come back? That has never happened to me. You're using your phone wrong.
So android is for idiots?
Were you any smarter than you are you would have a bunch of apps that do all the things you want them to do. For example DocsToGo is an excellent program compatible with ms office files.
Android runs perfectly if you know what to run on your device. try running windows 7 on Intel 386. Works well, huh?
Exactly, your **** does not matter.
Windows mobile..never again.
Windows Phone 7.. wortha try next month

I just got the kit kat update for Tab 3 8. I live in LA California. Wifi only and I had to force it using the check for updates option. So I can list a few differences I'm noticing. I'm pretty sure all this stuff is new but some of it might be stuff I missed with 4.2.2.
Transparent notification bar.
New multiwindow experience. Now it does not have that little tab hanging over the side. Now you swipe it in from the side. I haven't played with it, I still find it unusable.
You can customise the toggle ribbon more now. You still have to have tons of icons but you can pick the order and take a few out.
The lock screen has a now playing type widget that looks nice.
On-screen keyboard toogle for bluetooth keyboards. I actually am trying to write a screenplay on this tablet and I had to buy a stupid app to fix the stupid keyboard the stupid way it worked be stupid fore and now it works better and I bought a stupid app for stupid nothing. But I'm glad it works better now.
That's all I've noticed so far. I also don't use touchwiz, I use nova.
Tell me what you guys are noticing or if you find an official list of changes let me know. Thanks everybody

Jacksonville, FL here and no update available yet.
Cosmetically it's hard to notice the difference on the firmware, but under the hood there are some serious changes to the firmware, but all for the better.
The "Transparent Notification bar" was there on JB 4.2.2,
And "Multiple windows" is very functional now.
● TouchWiz is lighter and smooth now...
(I'm so happy with it's performance now, to the point I didn't bothered to install the Google Now Launcher yet...)
● Third-party apps can't write to External SD card anymore...
(There is a way if you root the device)
● Some extra new Wi-Fi settings.
● The keyboard is improved and the "Picture gallery" and other factory apps also received some TLC for the better.
But for me, the "Multiple User capability" is definitely th e Icing on the cake.

FIRST: This is my own opinion. You may disagree with it!
My Reasons:
I have Huawei P9. Looking at their Update policy I am not happy with it. P8 is not going to get a Nougat update which is SHAME! Not even 2 years of OS support... What a joke. This means My P9 most likely will not updated to a newer version after Nougat... Which means I will never again pay so much money for something that won't get at least 2 new OS updates (whole version).
Next: Nougat update. It's a complete JOKE. What's new? Split screen, App drawer (lol what innovation here!), couple redesign small things... Take a look at Samsung. They are actually adding new stuff... New apps that are useful: Password manager which makes a bigger use of the fingerprint scanner. Note app. New other stuff. And to be honest their Skin looks so much better. Colors are better. Did you see the ugly Black and Dark Blue colors on the Quick toggles on Huawei Nougat? Damn the guy who came with this idea should be fired as soon as possible! No Double tap to wake up, no raise to wake up... But hey they have Knuckle gestures.. Never used them? What a sick person will knock on his phone.. So dumb... Everytime I want to check my screen I have to look for the fingerprint or power button, chick with case makes a little harder to press everytime the power button, in the dark it's super annoying when you mistake it with Volume down... It's just annoying. Give me something easier. Wave to wake up, raise, double tap... Give me all of them and let me choose...
Next: Icons with app drawer are ridiculously BIG! I guess Huawei designers know nothing about aesthetics or don't care...
Next: Notes app doesn't sync with Gmail. I had iPhone and Samsung phones in the past. I really like Stock apps for notes, they are Free, no ads and easy to use.. And they sync with a Google account... This is not the case here.. There is just half baked app, made for 10 minutes while most likely the dude what on the WC...
So many stock Bloat but no Reminders app... Again! Did you try to set simple reminder without using Google Now? I did.. You need to go to Calendar, make Event, turn 100 option some ON, some OFF... Just give me a simple App like on iOS to make a Reminder in 10 secs.. Is this so hard? I guess it's so much easier than making 10 apps that no one is using...
Next: Nothing about Daydream... I guess it won't work with P9...
Next: Again Updates: Sammy released 4 BETA updates, iOS releases many Betas to make sure everything is OK when the final is released to the public.. Huawei still on 1st beta!!!! And most likely this will be the last... We will get Official release full of bugs and will have to wait months for a fix! Thank you Huawei!!!
Next: Huawei is one of the last OEMs that still hasn't uploaded their Stock apps on the Play Store. And we need to wait Months if there is a problem with some of the stock apps! Did you use the stock Huawei keyboard? Did you see how outdated it is? Doesn't have even all the emojis... Not talking about he look from 2008....
Next: Video recording software. Pixel uses software stabilization too, but it's so much better. Video recording quality is ridiculous for a phone at this price... Again I think someone did the coding while was doing his work on the WC... If Pixel can have a lot better recording with software stabilization why we should settle with suck a Joke?
This is why I won't buy another phone from Huawei. Too much negatives for me. And feeling sorry I didn't get the S7... The metal build was more important for me, but i did a mistake.. Should have taken the Glass.. Obviously other OEMs are doing a lot better job...
P.S: Biggest deal breaker: Updates... !
What's the problem if we're currently using Nougat Public Beta? I don't see any fallback. The official will be rolled out sooner or later.
Sent from my EVA-L19 using Tapatalk
Hi Martin, thanks for sharing your opinion, which you're very much entitled to of course.
I'm not too worried about the update. It'll come. It's my experience that almost ALL OEMs are slow at updating to the latest version (Samsung, LG, Oneplus). And when the update comes it's either full of bugs (Oneplus) or makes your phone come to a screeching halt (Samsung).
Notes app... I haven't found anything better than Google Keep for that and it syncs across my devices. Reminders I usually set via the calendar which isn't really an issue for me, but I'm sure there are reminders apps in the Playstore.
Granted, Huawei does have quite a bit of bloat on it, BUT... It doesn't seem to have an impact on either battery life or speed of the phone for me. For me my P9 is my first phone which even after a good 5 months usage is still just as swift and fluid as the first day I got it. And everything just works.

I am not saying it's a bad phone. It's a great phone, but the support is kinda poor. I am not rushing for the Nougat. I don't mind waiting if they will release a really stable version. Not happy that they are on the 1st beta and maybe this will be last and while most problems will be fixed, while they fix them most likely there will be a new one. And there is not a big improvement in Nougat. They could expand some things, make them better. It most of the time color change...
Don't mind the bloat too, I put all the stuff in a folder and forget they exist.
As I said the phone is great, but they could work a little better on the software.
The 3th beta got its firmware yesterday. You want to troll here, thats the point.

Yeah. Have nothing else to do, decided to troll. Nowadays if you say something people disagree is trolling.
Here in Bulgaria - Beta 1. In the official beta thread no reports for another update, but you got 3.. Strange.
Well the P8 won't be updated due to the same reasons as the Xperia Z3 from Sony. The Kirin used in the sP8 simply is not compatible with Vulkan and therefore Googles Certification Process for Android 7. As this does not happen regularly, you should be able to see updates for your P9 for at least 2 years i guess.

Are you invited for beta test? If not, what is the cust for bulgaria?
Why more betas than stable?
Better is to modify 6.0 and make a backup, if 7.0 got bugs in first global releases, then u can go back.
Why we need the same like other manufacture? Its enough now.
For every stuff have their pros / cons no one the best just find the one that fit for you, Huawei do good progress (not the best) and I dint see any new in software in other phone all are same / running on native Android ,you can go for non OEM firmware phone if need more software modification , but Huawei phone I think thay made for standard / daily driver like Apple...
Sounds like the op should have gone to Samsung, you are basically criticising the huawei because its not a samsung.....
I came from samsung and most of the things you point out as negatives are positives to me.
Placement of fingerprint scanner is perfect, touchwiz is awful and filled to the brim with bloat and ugly icons.
You complain about updates, just buy a samsung and see how long before you end up rooting it just so you can get an update or remove bloatware.

Some of these points are valid, however, the software is as it is because Huawei is a Chinese brand. Huawei is huge in china, and in china, this software is what sells. And if you don't like the stock apps, just download new ones. If you don't like the launcher, download a new one. That is the beauty of android. There are points of EMUI that I don't like either, but most of them I was able to fix by downloading apps and customizing what I could in the settings.
Has somebody forced you to buy the Huawei? If you have bought the phone without acquiring some information before is your fault.
You knew about the update, the software and the pro a d cons, why are you complaining?
If you thought that the samsung was better than the Huawei why you bought it? Take a s7 edge and be happy.
You could install a Rom anyway

How do you know how bad is a phone without using it at least for a month? Do they write the Cons in your country? Because here they don't. Yeah I will install a garage rom to fix my phone...
If I knew how bad this phone will be I was going to get the S7 without thinking twice...
I don't get people like you... Why don't you keep your pointless opinion for yourself. What, do only people with positive experience should write here? I am sharing my experience with this phone. And hope it will help to people who are thinking about getting this phone, thinking it's a great deal and great phone... I don't want people the give their money like me for something that's not worth it... If they read this and still want the phone at least they know some of the flaws and problems they may see and know they can live it it..
And why you shouldn't too!

In most European countries after you buy a phone and open the box, you can't give it back or exchange for another brand.
And it's Shipment, not SOLD... Still it's a great phone, for most people who are not too much into phones or know what other phones can do or how often they are updated, or don't care about updates they would be very happy with this phone. I am happy most of the time while using it. Small things are ruing my usage and this is the problem, they are small, fixable but no one is fixing them.

I saw the phone's announcement, and in my opinion they should never let Charlie Chang present a phones again.
It was one of the most awkward announcements I watched. He looked like he is going to explode, and every feature he presented it looked like he is praying to god that it will work.
but that's one thing.
during the presentation he tried to activate google assistant through the Edge Sense, and it didn't work, then he tried again and it failed again, then he made the most awkward "ooopss" he could make, while trying again couple of times until he continued presenting the google assistant without mentioning or talking about the incident (which is understandable but still troubling).
the weirdest thing is that I can't find any review or post that talks about it, I thought the press will destroy Htc for this screw up.
for me it's really troubling, this gimmick can be nice, but it's the first time we see something like this on any phone and I have doubts about its quality.
what do you think?
Meh, to say that I've never had stuff like that happen on any phone I've owned would be a huge understatement.
Had a unit in hand to test it one week ahead of the official announcement. On my test unit the Edge Sense worked really good, after getting accustomed after the first 30 Minutes and configuring it to my pressure sensitivity in settings.

Jeah some other people already tried Edge Sense and said something similar like @5m4r7ph0n36uru said. Its working okay or good - better then many expected. But for me its just a nice to have. Lets see how much they can improve this feature with future Software updates. Maybe its just a feature that ends up being a public prototype which would also be okay. If this feature is any good they will probably improve the hardware behind it in a future device.
I mean its the same with the fingerprint scanners, the first and even second version in the iPhone was quite bad in my opinion. The one in the 6s is good, but the ones before where too slow and the failure rate was too high (for me).

I wouldn't read too much into it - could be nerves, could be the phone wasn't set up properly for him, old software, etc.
Microsoft launched a version of windows (I think it might have been Win98) and during the launch they encountered the Blue Screen Of Death... it didn't seem to have much impact on their future!
I'm not too worried. If it doesn't work well I will just disable it. The phone is still nice.

They will update it. As HTC told in the same briefing, they are already planing to implement Double-Tab as a possibility to take further actions with Edge Sense, though they couldn't tell the date at this time but only that it is on the list. So I guess they are definitely planing to implement more gestures by such a step making short press, long press and double press available. With two different force settings, this would give us six gestures in total to configure for separate actions.
Something further is App based actions that'll be implemented to change the action resulting from a short press depending on the App you're using.

I hope so and i am sure they will but all I'm saying is that the hardware will be limited like i said with the fingerprint or another example the pressure sensitivity from the surface pen. In the first iterations it only had 256 different steps now they have around 2000. (not sure about the exact numbers here )
My hope is not too big about this squeeze feature in the first iteration but i am curious and will give it a try.

I thought the same Totally agreed with you... But I'm still buying the phone.. I hope after 1-2 updates it will work better.
I am lucky I wasn't in his shoes. Very awkward indeed. His hands were shaking.
I don't think it will damage sales. And in a live event anything can happen.
I don't think it even had to do with edge sense TBH... I think it had to do with the assistant apps themselves and probably the internet connection within the venue.
Mine works well do far. I just need to remember about it. I've left it starting the camera and it's good.
Honestly, I was hoping the edge sense would have worked just as the early videos showed of a couple walking the street and navigating the app drawer with the edge. Maybe version 2. But that was sick!

Can't say I've every been walking the street and needed to navigate the app draw. I have shortcuts for everything already. Actually only time I navigate the app draw is when I'm adding a shortcut lol. But I see what you saying. Maybe if they added volume up down or scrolling, but don't think that's how it works.
well... it would probably have worked better if she took them off..
