Tab 3 8 Kit Kat. What's new? - Galaxy Tab 3 General

I just got the kit kat update for Tab 3 8. I live in LA California. Wifi only and I had to force it using the check for updates option. So I can list a few differences I'm noticing. I'm pretty sure all this stuff is new but some of it might be stuff I missed with 4.2.2.
Transparent notification bar.
New multiwindow experience. Now it does not have that little tab hanging over the side. Now you swipe it in from the side. I haven't played with it, I still find it unusable.
You can customise the toggle ribbon more now. You still have to have tons of icons but you can pick the order and take a few out.
The lock screen has a now playing type widget that looks nice.
On-screen keyboard toogle for bluetooth keyboards. I actually am trying to write a screenplay on this tablet and I had to buy a stupid app to fix the stupid keyboard the stupid way it worked be stupid fore and now it works better and I bought a stupid app for stupid nothing. But I'm glad it works better now.
That's all I've noticed so far. I also don't use touchwiz, I use nova.
Tell me what you guys are noticing or if you find an official list of changes let me know. Thanks everybody

Jacksonville, FL here and no update available yet.

Cosmetically it's hard to notice the difference on the firmware, but under the hood there are some serious changes to the firmware, but all for the better.
The "Transparent Notification bar" was there on JB 4.2.2,
And "Multiple windows" is very functional now.
● TouchWiz is lighter and smooth now...
(I'm so happy with it's performance now, to the point I didn't bothered to install the Google Now Launcher yet...)
● Third-party apps can't write to External SD card anymore...
(There is a way if you root the device)
● Some extra new Wi-Fi settings.
● The keyboard is improved and the "Picture gallery" and other factory apps also received some TLC for the better.
But for me, the "Multiple User capability" is definitely th e Icing on the cake.

This is likely the first and the last update this device will see from Samsung.
I like Samsung devices, but I finally lost interest in buying any Samsung devices in the future.

auto brightness sucks.
I was hoping the autobrightness would get fixed. For me it's always way too dim. Where is the light sensor?

anyone else disappointed with the GB update?

call me weird but i was expecting more. the update release said new widgets and icons and colors and all im seeing is a new color on the notification bar. i have yet to find new widgets or icons or different looking icons or widgets. the phone looks exactly the same except for the notification bar and that little yellow thing that pops up when you reach the bottom of a screen. yes im happy about the speed improvement. the phone is a lot faster then before but other then that its the same old charge
the color scheme is wack. FUGLY!

This was a software update, not a device refresh. They fixed bugs, revved the Android version, and improved the radios. I'm not sure why you (or anyone else) was expecting major changes to the look/functionality of the device.
I'm not sure why they didn't at least take the Stratosphere's interface design/colors (which is more uniform), as that is essentially the same phone with a smaller screen and physical keyboard.

The Verizon PDF said so, that's why.
I see this as a major rip off. It's the biggest case of false advertisement since the Marvel Comic "The New Fantastic Four" which stated on the cover that the Punisher makes a cameo appearance and the only place you can find him is in an ad for subscriptions.
I don't really care seeing as I'm running the ICS theme....but F-U Verisung.

One legitimate complaint that I have is they borked the built in screen capture function. You can no longer capture some screens (notification shade for example) because the phone lags while trying to produce a stupid animation before capturing the screen.
Yes, it would be possible to use an app from the market but I should not need to. They essentially removed a useful feature.
Also I find that the orange page limit glow gets in the way or certain things. It sometimes covers up what I am trying to look at. If I want to drag a photo to be able to see the edge in the gallery app for example when zoomed in. The stupid orange glow covers up the picture; having the glow cover up a web page is one thing but covering up the edge I am trying to look at is wrong. Essentially they removed the functionality of being able to drag a web page, image, etc., to the center of the screen and view it.

Camera Issue
I was pleased with the update, and color scheme doesn't matter to me near as much as a more stable radio, and more responsive interface. Here is the reason I wish I would not have updated. CAMERA! I have a 2 year old and a 2 month old. Before, you could press and hold the shutter button to focus, and when you released it instantly snapped the shot. Now, that's a no go! A second + lag...... Hard to get the "good" shot that is hard to get. Bummer!
i love the speed improvements thats for sure. the phone is 100 times faster then it was but i think if verizon is going to publish documents claiming new icons and new widgets they should probably deliver on that.
I get FFC so I'm happy.

Got my Charge in May. I run stock because I don't care what the interface looks like. I need it to work, no time for bricks, make phone calls, txt, Google Docs etc. I was about done with Froyo because it was getting so slow, it seemed almost like it was being emulated on my phone. Was about to make a stink with Verizon.
Got the update. It fixed every single bug/complaint I ever had with the phone, and/or it enhanced every feature by fine tuning it.
Here is a short list of complaints fixed immediately:
GUI now hauls butt with little or no lag
bluetooth works perfectly and connects to my headset and stays connected
programs close on their own - don't have to constantly free memory
GPS works and is accurate
Yahoo Mail in email actually WORKS
The call quality is the clearest of any phone I've ever had (I do have great coverage here). 4G LTE hauls butt. With GB This phone makes my old iPhone looks like a piece of garbage.
Just my opinion.
i found the fancy new icons they were boasting about. the update available and download complete icons are new. ooohhhh aahhhhh.

My phone doesn't show an available update yet, not sure why, perhaps it's because I'm running Humble 5.0 and not stock . . . Anyway, when I do get the new OTA, how do I get the new icons/widgets? Is it a separate download or something? Thanks!

Now I know why this phone is so popular. First impressions, wow!!

I posted this in the Samsung Galaxy S2 section by mistake, when I should of posted it here. Didn't realize there was 2 different sections, anyho...
I just go this phone yesterday and all I have to say is WoW. This screen and performance is just amazing. I came from an X10, obviously no camprison, the S2 is a beast (in a good way).
What has really impressed also besides the speed and screen is the following built-in stuff:
Task manager, file manager, the fact that you can add a pattern lock and don't have to slide to unlock, the music controls in the notifications, the voice call controls in the notifications, the timer/stopwatch included in the clock, the neat graphics when you cut-n-paste is cool and even the magnifier when selecting text. I'm really impressed by Samsung's attention to detail.
A few small gripes though (nothing major):
1. No LED notification
2. No dedicated Camera button
3. I wish the USB port was on the top with the 3.5mm jack. Why? When I'm playing music in my car and I have to charge it and it's plugged into the 3.5mm it's awkward to place the phone on the center console.
(but these are very minor issue compared to the gains this phones has).
And another thing I don't know why people keeping complaining about this phone's plastics. I think it's a very well built/sturdy phone.
Sony is really behind, I don't think even their new Sony S/Ion will be a match for the S2 let alone the S3.
Edit: I just found out you can do a screen capture without having to root the thing. It keeps getting better and better.
Glad you are enjoying it. I think you will continue to for a long while. Not much to not like about it huh...
If you only knew how much better it could be if you root. It would answer your 1st two complaints.

Try NoLED. It's free from on the market (er.. Play). Only one thing I would tweak: Set the app to sleep while you're sleeping because it still uses battery to light the screen when there's a notification.

NoLED lights up your screen with a different colored pixel depending on what type of message is new. It might use blue for gmail, purple for outlook email, etc.
I prefer to use BLN myself. Lights up the bottom row of buttons when I have a new email or message.

Exactly -> inefficient & the default colors made it looked quite ugly. I actually really like the way BLN Control makes my phone look when all 4 buttons at the bottom are lit up and the phone is off...
Now if only they could find a way to light up specific buttons for specific message types! I wouldn't have to add MissedIt! to my lock screen to quickly see what type of new message I have.
I thought I was done with this phone when I got my Note, but after using the Note for over a month and getting irritated with the lag, I fired up my Skyrocket and was so impressed with how fast and smooth it was, I immediately switched back to it. Battery life has been better than I remembered, too.

My Spen "Reset" App

I hope this is the right place to post this. I have owned and really loved my N7000 for several months now. As an ex-Palm user, the SPen stylus was a huge draw. I began to note, however, that over time the accuracy and the location of the floating pointer of my SPen began to drift. I searched and found many people complaining about this and saw multiple posts of "fixes" to try. I even found a paid app in the marketplace that claims to deal with this. I recalled that on my various Palm devices I occasionally had to re-run the touchscreen calibration routine and began to look for one of these thinking it should be built-in. But I could not find one that actually seemed to help.
After more digging I discovered a technique that seemed to work. Simply changing the SPen's dominant hand setting back and forth from my setting of Left to Right and back to Left again made a big difference. But doing so was inconvenient and really had to be done with some regularity to keep things really perfect. After more searching, I discovered how changing the SPen device's dominant hand (not the actual preference setting but seemingly communicating directly with the device) could be triggered by a script. However, this requires ROOT and some way to launch the script. I tired this and found it worked well.
So I decided to wrap this technique up in a little app - my first real Android app. It also requires ROOT and uses much the same technique as the script. You simply tap the app's icon and the quick change is performed - there is no UI. The app determines your current dominant hand setting from the preference file and then tells the device to switch to the opposite hand and back again. Nothing too big here but it seems to work for me (as well as some others who posted this "fix" idea).
I would think it good for this to be scheduled to run regularly (maybe once every .5 - 1 hour) so one never has to be bothered. But for now I haven't figured out how to do this and my guess is there are free apps available that can run this on a schedule. I was able to find such a program to run the script in this manner.
But I have not tested this on any but my own N7000. Will it work for others? Will it work on US carrier's versions of the Note? Will it work on the Note II or the new tablet that has an SPen? I am not sure and am hoping others out there will try this and let me know their findings and suggestions.
Thanks
EDIT: Please note that I have moved the APK file to the Google Play Store. Here is the link.

For those that have it, Tasker should allow one to schedule this activity as needed. For those that don't, I recommend looking into it.

Also, I can no report that I have this running on a schedule using the Scheduling function of the excellent SManager app from the marketplace. I have been using that to run the onandroid script automatically to perform nightly backups. It can run executable programs as well as scripts. To run the .apk you use the android activity manager program (/system/bin/am) using the following command line:
/system/bin/am start -n com.whitedavidp.reset.spen/.MainActivity
Cool!

Thanks, I will look into that. I am so new to this I kept things as simple as possible. A service would seem the right way to handle built-in scheduling. But I would also want to retain the tapping of the app icon so it can be run on command in case the user has set the interval too large and wants to reset things right now.
thats a nice one

Feedback on GB or Jelly Bean?
I should have mentioned in my original post that I have tested this only on Stock Touchwiz ICS 4.0.4 using Hydracore 4.3 kernel. It would be helpful to know if this works and does its job well on other platforms. Lacking adequate hardware, I can think of no way to ascertain this except asking others to try and give me feedback. Other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Thank you for this app! I'm using an SGH-T889 Note II and the app worked perfectly. It could just be my imagination, but it really seems like my stylus is way more accurate, so I'm assuming it worked! Just thought I'd let ya know in case you still needed to know if it worked on a different phone. Thanks again!

Ok that's cool I'm glad I could help (even though it's miniscule lol). I can also say now that it's not just my imagination, because it actually does work. This morning I had some time to kill before a meeting so I was doodling it up. After a while I noticed the S Pen accuracy was really starting to slip, so I ran your app again and the difference was amazing! I'm really surprised that Samsung didn't intergrate an app like this, because you'd figure they'd recognize the precision drops over time by now. Anyway I'm definitely glad I found this man and once again I really appreciate your hard work!

hi
this app is a great idea! please update it with schechule... but i still have problems with landscape mode... there it's always off...
a fix for this would be soooo nice!
thx for youre work!
App runs on paranoid Android.
Not sure about tw roms but on cm/pa and aokp roms pointer icon is always slightly towards top left of screen. If phone is rotated, rather than point to the 'new' top left it is still pointing at the volume up button.
To fix landscape we need someone to work out how to convince the input that the screen is 1280 x 800 instead of 800 x 1280, this (I think) means the spen input would need to recalibrate every time your screen rotates eating batteries for breakfast.
Right handed use landscape where bottom of phone moves right (anticlockwise) you can still see it its just off. If you swing bottom of phone left pointer hides behind spen

Thanks for the info and response. Can you please describe: (a) does my app help when in portrait mode? and (b) can you describe how the pointer is off when you are in landscape (which direction and by how much)? and (c) when you return to portrait mode does the pointer seem right?
I have a more complete version offering scheduling and other convenience features coming and will put both on the marketplace once I figure out how to do that.
PS - I think I read somewhere that toggling auto-rotate on/off may help "fix" the S-Pen and I wonder if this will work for you?
Cheers!

Thanks for your info. Good to know that the app doesn't crash on Paranoid. My phone is TW ICS 4.0.4 with Hydracore 4.3 kernel. On my phone I do not see the issue with landscape mode that you and phasA describe. I can say that I really wasn't liking the way auto-rotate was working on my phone (sometimes just too sensitive). So I have installed this app which basically makes me confirm that I want to rotate. Perhaps this has something to do with my I am not seeing this issue?

When I see this i guess either mine is fine or I dont know what they are looking at . Some one could let me know what the lag is so I can check mine.

Its everywhere.... Where do I start? there is a delay unlocking the phone once your finger swipes, opening apps is slow, pressing home button to return to home screen is delayed (after disabling the home button in svoice), pulling the notification window down randomly stutters. Most of these are random and inconsistant, but 1 that I have found is ALWAYS an issue is in the Samsung Browser. Do this to see the lag. at the top there is the window notification in the broswer that shows how many open windows there are. Press it and see how long it takes to display the other windows.
The lag is everywhere... Had I not returned my HTC One to get this I would return it in a second, but they wont accept a second return now, so im stuck with a crap phone....
Im sorry that everyone is having these issues but mine seems fine and if it is lagging then maybe im not a super user and to me it dont seem to be a problem , my only issue is the keypad I keep hitting the numbers when typing and letters when spacing . And the windows tab opens pretty quick to me bout .9 of a second and it opens.

use a different browser and see how fast it is. Thats the problem .9 seconds is lag, I guess were use to different speeds. If you are coming from a craptastic phone that had alot of lag you wont notice it as much as someone who is use to a fast phone like a Nexus 4 or HTC One. Those phones are blazing, and honestly my old Note 2 was faster than this S4.

After playing a bit with the one I do agree that it is quite a bit snappier however something about it just seemed boring. As for the lock screen I do agree and I was able to help the issue a bit by switching to the ripple effect apposed to light under lockscreen effect. Also switching to thumb keyboard greatly improved speed there. However after using it for a few days the little bit of lag either gotten better or I just notice less.
Might be just that , ive been on a htc vivid since November 2011 and it got to be a pain in the arse to use. Hopefully they will have something that will fix it soon.
No lag here, but I've said that already.

I just came from an iPhone 5 and the GS4 is already back in the box. I used it for one day and it was pretty bad. I guess if I had used it longer I might have gotten used to the slowness of it but the fact that SVoice and Google Voice search didn't work over bluetooth in my car like Siri and Google do on my iPhone made me return it.

Yes the Note 2 is MUCH and I mean MUCH smoother right out of the box...
I am seriously considering trading my S4 for a Nexus 4 or a Note 2...
This phone may get better in time but that time is NOT now..
Give Samsung time to address it....geez, guys!

Samsung and AT&T have a long track record of taking months upon months to address issues via a software fix..
Its just the trolls with the "lag". Guess they need something to post about.

Root it in the mean time, install tibackup and start removing crap. Clearly the phone is loaded with only 8 or 9gb free on a 16gb device.

with already having root, and the bootloader unlock already verified to be coming soon, i think you would be doing yourself wrong to get rid of your gs4. since we now know that custom roms will be on their way. and since we know that custom roms do perform better than stock roms.
Anyone who says their S 4 doesn't lag is either lying, blind, or seriously has never used a lag free phone. I don't see how its going to be fixed either since its mostly due the the extraordinary amount of bloat in this version of Touchwiz with a tone of useless "features" that are also responsible for taking up so much memory space. I have an iPhone 5 which is lag free like all iPhones ever and a Note 2 which has a minor amount of lag in a few places. The shoddy cheap plastic construction, bloat, and minimal memory space is an insult to Samsung customers. At least the buttons are better but Samsung is out of control everywhere else. Ugh. They msut really think their customers will put up with anything they deign to slop down to them.
I did notice a tad bit of lag here and there and to me the 3 main contributions to lag in any s4 are this
1- stock browser ie. Keyboard lag
2-stock launcher, I use go ex
3-att crap bloat, I've deleted not disabled it all
My s4 is f'in fast as hell with no lag after addressing those three items

Android L Update Discussion

So far it looks like we have only 54 days left until the end of HTC's promise window and according to HTC's website our device is in the 3rd of 5 stages of development, the 5th being release.
Has anyone heard anything that would indicate a time frame sooner than the 1st of February?

And then we wait for the carriers to pass all their inspections.. So I'm thinking the carrier will have the build within the 90 but how long do they test and hold it until release? Hopefully HTC gets it to the carriers by the end of this month so we can have a release by Feb
I'm excited to try out lollipop with sense on top but I will say I'm pretty satisfied with GPE lollipop builds now and very happy to have it so early and running great.

What does anyone think of the leaked images over on Phandroid of the OS in action?
I wish they would change the lockscreen to something more AOSP-like, but I suppose its not as horrible as it could be.

I wish they'd keep more of the material Google look. It looks like more of the same from Android 4.4 to be honest.

Hey, at least it's not that crap Samsung is pushing. Completely ruined the best looking Android yet.
The card-based app switcher is objectively worse than the old 3x3 grid, where you could see everything at a glance without any scrolling, know exactly where to tap (even before the thumbnails appeared), and it would require only a single tap to switch to/close any window or close all apps.
Thumbnails in a vertical/horizontal stack is similarly terrible.
What happened to efficient design?

It is odd, but I think I could do with the current format as long as they included a close all button somewhere in that screen. It just that when I think about it I tend not to go back more than 4 apps in my history when switching, and more often just go to close all recent apps.
We don't really need a close all button. You can already close them all at once by opening the recents pinching 2 fingers together on the screen. Simple.

But that's not a really intuitive gesture when working with a stack of cards.
I'm shocked there doesn't seem to me more discussion of this. I've seen some leaked picrures and descriptions of new features/layout recently. Looks good! I'm hoping January is the month we get it.

That doesn't work in Digitalhigh's latest GPE, or I've misunderstood you. But I've tried dragging two fingers toward the center from top and bottom and left and right with the recent apps open, and I've tried swiping up on Recent while swiping down from the top. Several times. Nothing happens. But, DH has implemented a close all button, so maybe he disabled the gesture you describe.
Personally, I'm a fan of the windshield wiper method. Open recents, and swing your thumb back and forth on the screen, horizontally. Like a windshield wiper. It's fun in a Fruit Ninja kind of way. Not really, but I tell myself it is.
As for HTC's 90-day guarantee, I'm expecting end of February. I bet they'll have it out for the international users by the end of January, and then pass the buck to Verizon and Sprint to get it done in a month. They never specified who would get the update, just that they would get it out. International users don't have to worry about carrier BS, so I'm thinking maybe the 90-day promise just applies to them.
But hey, I'm running Lollipop now and it's stock Android, and I couldn't be happier with this phone. But if Google continues making Nexus phones available here in the US (and by that I mean operable on national American carriers), I might just go that route. I just hope the 2016 Nexus 8, the new phone presumably coming out this year (leaving alone speculation as to what they call next year's), isn't 8" across. Give it a saner 4.7" diagonal measurement, and an 8MP camera on the front, hence the name.
Maybe a good sign.
