Unlocking frames-per-second limit on fps-locked games? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

There are Android Emulators that can force other games to run at 60 FPS even if they are 30-FPS locked, android system on Bluestacks CN version do it for all games, even for games like Ragnarok M SEA, Asphalt 9, and Fortnite who are well known to be locked at 30 FPS only.
The question is, can we do this on Oneplus? On an actual android device? What did Bluestacks CN do to their android OS that enables them to force-unlock those FPS-locked games?

Hilarious how they advertised 90hz so much when in reality, it's really an impractical feature. So is it worth getting $700 phone just for that sweet 90hz? ?

And then you think that Refresh rate is the same as fps

Im not an expert on BlueStacks as it sucked 5 years ago, but now it can use native harware as GPU it should have the access to cache and delivery you the info to your display using computer performance instead of mobile limited performance as before. Smartphones, Read Game info from ROM, forward it to RAM, process it in CPU, sendt GPU and Display.
BlueStacks Opens it's Virtualization in the computer RAM (it uses set CPU to operate itself as windows software but most RAM you set is to recreate the game or whole android OS) In the RAM it reads, creates, replicate (emulates) and Then fowards that copy to GPU with NEW instructions to render it at set Fps, then To display, provided that it is lighter than a normal windows app, it should do the job just well. It does more precessing but using superior hardware that helps it mimic the instructions and catapults it at a higher frame.

Never even claimed that fps is same as refresh rates. You cannot take advantage of 90hz if the app is capped at 60fps. And the reality is that 90% of apps on playestore are capped at 60fps and probably will never change any time soon. So was it worth removing headphone jack and expandable storage for that sweet 90hz? ??

I bet everyone here would prefer to be running the LG V2O instead...lol.

In case some of you guys do not know, Vsync is ALWAYS turned on in Android, so and Refresh Rate ADAPTS to FPS. in an uncapped state, for example, Vainglory, it can run at 120 Hz, it's also on 120 FPS SINCE VSYNC IS TURNED ON.

My main device is Note 9 you pleb. I bought LGV20 as my backup phone and also to experiment with it and try its quad dac. It's dirt cheap on Ebay anyway. But even still lgv20 is stil better than OP7 for simply having everything. Enjoy your iphone rip off.

Lol unfortunately you're wrong there buddy. The difference is hugely noticeable; it's the only reason why ASUS/Razer "Gaming phones" have such a buttery looking display. Refresh rate=/=FPS. Refresh rates are an entirely different beast then FPS. Refresh rates function on a different aspect of our biological being- Fusion Flicker Threshold. 60hz is considered the most cost effective and pleasing refresh rate for most of humanity- and that's true. But, you're bound to notice the very slight flicker or jankiness or 60hz next to a higher refresh screen.

You cannot. high refresh rate on android is still a joke. No app developer would go out of their way to add higher refresh rates on their apps. There are few apps but they're 1% Stop treating your mobile devices as gaming devices. With the money you bought your 90hz-144hz phone with, you could've already bought a 240hz monitor with that lol.

Samsung lying again in benchmarks

Again, the benchmarks are not useful, samsung tricks them using special modes that the phone will not be able to use in non-benchmarks apps.

Pretty scummy of Samsung but I'm sure they aren't alone in benchmark cheating.

Yeah. Not a good practice on Samsung's part, but who really cares. I'm not buying this phone because of benchmark scores.
Thats unfortunate.
OMG! Call the phone police!
CPU performance is honestly excellent. The Galaxy Note 3 is more or less the fastest Android smartphone we've tested up to this point. In the situations where we can do cross platform (OS/browser) comparisons, it isn't quite as fast as the iPhone 5s but in some cases it comes close. I should mention that the Note 3 (like many other Android devices - SGS4, HTC One) detects certain benchmarks and ensures CPU frequencies are running at max while running them, rather than relying on the benchmark workload to organically drive DVFS to those frequencies. Max supported CPU frequency is never exceeded in this process, the platform simply primes itself for running those tests as soon as they're detected. The impact is likely small since most of these tests should drive CPU frequencies to their max state regardless (at least on the CPU side), but I'm going to make it a point to call out this behavior whenever I see it from now on.

Does it matter? Is that going to sway anyones buying decision? The phone is blazing fast. In the real world as long as it plays that video you want to see and plays whatever games you want to play, who cares?

The Cliff Notes from what Brian at Anandtech explained is that detecting a benchmark running, certain OEMs prime the CPU to run at max output rather than waiting for the request. As he said, the benchmarks run (or at least should) the CPU at max output anyway. It's the difference between testing a car's 0-60MPH speed from a standing start and rolling start. Except in this case you're talking about milliseconds of having the SoC at max output before a benchmark would have pushed the CPU there on its own.
Tempest in a tea pot.
Guys, it's only benchmarks.
If you consider it cheating, than I'm sure Samsung won't be alone doing this (as mentioned in Anandtech review).
Who knows even Apple might also did this.
Benchmark performance only amaze techgeek persons. Most people won't care or even read about it.
I'm more concerned about the performance issues mentioned in ars technica review such as Gallery app.
Does anyone else who already got their phone experienced the same issue?
I stopped believing in benchmarks a long time ago. IMO, they really only serve to give you a general idea of how units of similar hardware/setup might perform. I don't believe there's any true "real world" performance tests that can be done. In the end, only you can decide if something's gonna fit your needs by actually physically messing around with it...
Yeah, who cares about benchmarks. Samsung isn't making the phone perform at some magical speed. The phone is fully capable of performing at the level Samsung 'tricks' the benchmarks into believing. It's just that, the e-peen contests people get from showing off their benchmarks don't equate to real world performance.
Who really cares about benchmarks....really?
wth is "benchmark booster" and why is it only applied to the N3 tests? Extremely fishy

It's like putting track tires on a sports car so you can post a better Nurburgring time. They stuck in code that recognizes when popular benchmarking software is being started and it makes sure the CPU is running full out of the gate to goose the figures a bit. You can decide to what degree that is deceptive, but to call it "lying" as the post title suggests is probably a bit of hyperbole.

Benchmarks are for cheerleaders.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Benchmarks matter. They are the quickest least subjective way to compare power between phones.
Im sure Sammy isnt the only one , but its a slippery slope. What I dont want to see is them capping processing power to proclaim longer battery life while still advertising or benchmarking a full capacity CPU/GPU.
This is not worst than phone manufacturers advertising idle battery time as 800-1000 hours or some other hogwash number. They run those battery tests in their labs in unrealistic conditions that does not resemble real life usage even remotely just to pump up the score. That, in my opinion, is more "cheating" to the consumer than propping the CPU before a benchmark.
What I get from this:
If we rename our favorite apps to "Geekbench" we'll get better performance?

Yes and no. And it depends on whether the benchmark is an emulator (talking directly to the h/w) or using the phone's native code and drivers. Since we're on car analogies it's more like bench horsepower (talking directly to the h/w) and horsepower to the wheels (using native code). There are a ton of devices out there that get fantastic benchmarks (they should if they use the same SoC) but crater based on the OEM doing a ****ty job with s/w and drivers.
And if you look at S-800 over S-600 the worst S-800 benchmark is light years ahead of the best S-600. It still comes down to how a device does the things that you ask it to based on your unique apps and settings configuration. I guarantee you my N3 running 113 apps with 9 syncs going all the time isn't going to "feel" as fast as someone else's running "lean" to maximize performance.

CPU Throttling Test on XZ Premium

Hello!
I got my eyes on this phone for a while now, and I'm finally set to buy it.
I have been using Xperia XZ for two years and I love it, but the throttling is very bad on this phone.
I read that the XZ Premium does not have any throttling whatsoever. I couldn't find any video or picture of users using a Throttling Test App.
So what I want is someone who has a XZ Premium (not rooted) to download the CPU Throttling Test and take a snapshot or a video of the screen after 10~15 minutes of the test.
That would help me decide to buy it on the spot.
Thank you very much!
It seems it does throttle, with the CPU speed on the higher cores dropping from 2.36GHz to 2GHz. This is with a year old XZP, tested with charger off, and a thick Spigen case on.

However, in terms of actual every day use, I don't see any slow down at all, even with gaming. Is there a reason why you need a phone that doesn't throttle?
Mostly just for everyday gaming like MOBAs.
But, throttling from 2.3 to 2.0 is almost nothing (I think?)
The Xperia XZ goes from 2.1 to 1.1. That's a lot and the phone lags, the fps on games gets really low, and gets way to hot to handle on a 25 min. MOBA game.
That looked pretty good! I Think I will get this phone!
Thank you for your response!
There are also more results on youtube regarding the cpu throttling for sd845 phones.

dude I dont trust these softwares that check cpu throtteling,
all I know is real action, if I can feel a stutter then I call that cpu throtteling like crazy
but this phone man, its crazy fast, no lags, crazy smooth I mean I dont ever think of buying a newer phone after this, its just mad in terms of speed it can still beat S9's and Note 9's and oneplus's
and its a year old with me.
keep in mind, that is on the screen resolution out of the box, if you wanna do like me (who really loves CRISP quality) and use the "4k all the time" mod, it will not feel as smooth as on 1080p but to me its really worth it because it still doesnt lag at least not something to be conciderablly noticeable, but if youre not obsessed with 4k screens and keep it on 1080, I dont think there is a better device than this one, not even the ones with snapdragon 845 even if there is a faster phone, that extra speed wouldnt make a huge difference in my opinion..

Does it feel smooth? I'm currently deciding if I should buy this phone or the Mate 20 lite (I'm buying with Tre at the same price), I really like the screen and the camera but the SoC is slower on the A7. As long as it is a smooth UI I'll buy this one, since I'm not that interested in graphics demanding games and CPU intensive apps, I just need it to be usable without lags and random freezes.

Don't buy the Mate 20, i bought one before getting the A7, the screen in the Mate 20 is really bad, has one of the grey "ish" blacks I've seen on any recent phones, my unit also had a problem with hot pixels that were only noticeable on black colors in very dark environments

Is it really that bad? I mean, it's an LCD, obviously OLED screens are better, but I was told and I found online that it's a fairly good LCD for a mid-range phone. Also, I don't really mind the screen, I just need a smooth system, and from experience I know Samsung ones can be quite heavy. On the other hand, after two years and a half of EMUI I'd like something that looks newer, and Huawei has recently stopped providing bootloader codes for free. That said, I'll still keep EMUI if it means that it's smoother.

The Mate 20 has a faster chipset, if your priority is power then i guess that's your best option, having said that, the A7 is a very smooth device, i have not found any stutter or any apps that struggles to handle, i think the experience is very good
i primarily use my phone for media consumption and was very disappointed with the screen and audio quality of the Mate 20, the volume with headphones is below average in volume
this is the way i see it:
Mate 20
pros
faster chipset
feels very premium in hand
cons
screen not as good as the A7
sound volume and quality are below average
has a notch
A7
pros
fantastic screen without a notch
very good audio quality (has dolby atmos)
better camera than the mate 20
is widevine L3 certified so you can watch netflix at full hd
you get always on display
cons
the device is very light in a cheap kind of way,
front camera doesn't have autofocus
the side bezels are a bit bigger than we are used to in 2019, i'll take that over a notch
doesn't have usb type-c
i hope that helps with your decision

well, the xiaomi mi A2 is almost half the price of the A7, only $ 180, i don't think is a fair comparison, the A7 is better in every single way but that's to be expected from a device twice the price
if money is not a problem i would go for the A7, if you are on a budget and want to save some money then i guess the xiaomi is a good option, i've never had a xiaomi device so i can't really tell you what to expect

Thanks a lot, a check with Smart Switch revealed that there is an update for the Netherlands as well. I guess for a lot of other European countries tool. Rooted phones will not receive the update OTA, you must manually download it. For that you can use Sammobile.com which is excruciatingly slow however. If it works, use SmartSwitch instead. It is ree, quicker, less of a hassle and you can be sure you get the right version for your phone.

Mi a2 has sd660 which is slightly better in gaming and youre getting android one. Better updates.
For me, id go with a7 because of one ui and the camera. Go with mi a2 if you feel like gaming but battery is terrible

My Exynos is just what I wanted...no heating, no lag, stutter or whatever, it is fast, I have 6 hrs+ SOT, blazing fast 5G speeds and it lasts the whole day...

Have a try at using the Zf4 beside it. You'll see the difference, heck even the ZF3 with sd888 is more efficient and smoother/has less frame drops.

I don't contest a Fold could be faster, I also owned a Fold 3 for some time then returned it as it doesn't fit my needs so I know how they are. But the Exynos 2200 is very close with it's SD counterpart and to be honest I don't care about some marginal higher benchmark scores. I don't do benchmarks, I just use the phone (mainly business) and it never failed me, or had lag or stutter. It just works and is flawless at everything I throw at it.
I don't want to enter in the Exy vs SD debate, it is neverending but saying that it "sucks" at least for the S22 series is completely wrong, actually in tests SD is heating more and suffers from throttling

Both the Exynos 2200 and SD 8 Gen 1 both suffer from efficiency problems because the 4nm Samsung Foundry manufacturing process was a failure (hence Qualcomm going to TSMC for the 8+Gen1). It's good that you like the phone and it works for you but there is without a doubt frame drops and general stutter on the Exynos s22u, if it doesn't bother you then great but it bothers me and obviously other S22u users on this forum.

I saw posts and heard people complaining so I don't say it doesnt. Just that it is not general or for all devices. It is not that I am not bothered, I just never encountered lag or stutter on my device and I doubt mine is unique. Maybe I use apps that don't lag, dunno...can you give me some examples of apps where lag is happening? And I don't say about that Reddit thread with scrolling lags because there I have lag too. I am talking about aps or settings on the phone where you do something and it lags. I'll try just to test

Animations drop frames and yes scrolling on Twitter and Reddit stutter. Like I said, use it beside the Zf4 or even the ZF3 and you can see the difference even scrolling on the apps. FWIW, I had similar on the P6P which basically uses and Exynos. The S22u doesn't perform badly as such, it just doesn't perform like a £1400 phone should.
So, getting back to the topic that was posted, what does any of the above have to do with SMB performance? Numbers were posted via screenshots that are in a foreign language that most don't understand. SMB infers a network copy file operation so a lot to be considered here other than just the phone. As a matter of fact, I would say the phone factors in less that 50% with regards to SMB performance.
I backup and restore a lot of things with network shares. It is a common use case for me. Fact is the SD 8 Gen 1 is almost twice as fast.
Other than that the phone is not bad.
my exinos do its work no lags no loose of frame
twitter and reddit for me are unuseful and banned from all ny phones and tablets only good to waste time i have two s22 exinos and no problems al all
i use the phone don't play with benchmarks

I have the same but the point here was performance of network transfers via SMB....I don't use SMB shares so can't check transfer speeds at the moment but I might setup one just for the sake of testing. I find cloud sharing much easier to use for me tho
my files are all on nas and pendrive in Italia cloud is not very good and working is an optional like streaming (dazn docet) only in big cities you can use it and not always
for years I've worked in a public company and backup was something really not in the mind of our central company

That is insane. Are you on Beta? Did you change something?
accidently send it twice...
I often have performance problems when using SMB on android/linux.
Try to use SFTP, its much faster.

I think, my phone just had a lucky day. I've made some testing, and my speed sucks around 1-5 MB/s

Question Some issues on Snapdragon S22 Ultra

Firstly, the fingerprint scanner. It's pretty wacky, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it works with wet hands sometimes it doesn't wanna work with dry hands even. Note : I have a screen protector on it, not a glass one, just a regular one. I heard glass screen protectors will mess with the fingerprint scanner so got a regular one. I've had these fingerprint scanner issues since before I applied the protector so I'm guessing it's not just the protector's fault.
Secondly, I don't know if the speaker itself is like this but the earpiece speaker distorts a lot when listening to mostly bass to mid-range focused stuff. For example let's say pianos or vocals, or even just yt videos. pretty unpleasant.
There's also some banding problems in the UI that's pretty annoying, also the unlock wallpaper animation seems to be bitrate starved, is it just me? Examples
I updated to One UI 5 as soon as I could because everyone was saying the phone got "fixed" and there were no stutters or anything. But it felt quite similar to my experience I've had since I got the phone. I don't know what's wrong, everyone's saying the phone feels extremely smooth now, I mean it does feel smoother but there's constant glitches/bugs/stutters. There's also a lot of unexplained slowdowns when scrolling in some apps, it isn't completely stuttery but it doesn't feel smooth. Feels like it goes down to 60 hz or stops and continues at some points. Some apps also like to just shut down/crash. Extremely annoying. By the way, I've done the animation improvement thing in the developer options, halving the animation speeds. I can't go back now lol
The display also likes to go under 120 hz a lot, the fingerprint scanner animation isn't 120 hz and it's noticeable when unlocking. When playing some games and pulling down the quick panel, it stays in 60 hz. Also in some games it likes to jump between 60 hz and 120 hz a lot, which makes a pretty weird experience. Some games even go down to like 30 hz when launching and at some random points. For example, in Jurassic World the refresh rate just bounces up and down, sometimes 60 sometimes 120. In Colour Switch, the refresh rate goes down to like 30 hz when launching, I have a feeling it's because of the google play games thing coming down, whenever it comes the refresh rate goes down. Also, when scrolling through the game modes the refresh rate is constantly jumping or the something's going on because the scrolling is how i mentioned before, extremely weird and not smooth.
When watching a video on MPV and bringing the quick panel down, the display is stuck at 60 hz and makes for a very weird experience. The phone gets incredibly hot when using MPV to watch 4k 60 videos and the brightness goes down a lot. Like it gets capped at 30%, I understand why it's happening but damn didn't expect it to get so hot. I tried using bilinear upscaling and downscaling filters but even then it was just as hot as using lanczos or spline 16 even so i just stuck with lanczos. I even tried disabling the debanding but nothing much changed, it got hot within 5 minutes still so I just kept using it. When using something like MX Player or Just VIdeo player it doesn't get as hot and the brightness stays constant but the noticeable banding is extremely annoying.
I'm still confused, it shouldn't use that much power I mean it barely hits 10% usage on my CPU and GPU on my PC and I'm using a mid range R5 5600x and RX 6700 XT. I'm using ewa lanczos sharp on PC and just lanczos or spline 16 on phone sky rockets the usage. Maybe I had too much expectation on the phone's SOC?
Anyways, I guess the last part is not about the phone I guess but it was a problem that I felt had to be talked about. I'd like to see some insights on this, is it just me or is the phone supposed to be like this?
youbseem really disappointed with this device, in general, only few people get this level of frustration, it happens all the time, there will no remedy due to the magnitude of your disatisfaction, my honest advice is that you look for some other device that fulfills your expectations, which clearly this device can not

I upgraded from an M32, I previously used an S8+ and S7 Edge. I wad very satisfied with those but this is just not as consistent as those. What hurts more is that this is more expensive than those. Honestly, I've looked into the smartphone market and nearly none fulfill my expectations. My main problem is the fact that it's heralded as an improvement over the past ones but it's not consistent. A consistent 60 hz experience is far superior than a stuttery, buggy 120 hz experience. I'm extremely happy with the design, build quality, Display (mostly bought it because of this) software look/feel( I really love how One UI looks and functions, when it does so properly, compared to other phones) software support and cameras. It's just that the user experience is pretty compromised other manufacturers aren't any better overall. A couple of my acquaintances have faced problems with Oneplus phones, resulting in faulty screens and stuff. My uncle had to get rid of his google pixel 6 because it was quite frankly unusable . Xiaomi doesn't like to update and I don't like their UI. Vivo's UI looks ok but I'm not sure about consistency for example gsmarena said that it overheats and doesn't have HRR in games. Gaming phones do not get proper updates for long and are too expensive for what they are. Finally, I feel like Oppo is a tad behind everyone else at this price point. The X80 Pro and 12S Ultra seem like proper ultra type phones, the find x5 pro seems like a lower tiered phone in the camera department.
I had thought about this a lot but I was just kind of disappointed in this purchase. Really happy with some stuff and even most stuff when it works correctly, it just doesn't want to work correctly and as I said near the end of the post. I just wanted to know if it's just me or are others experiencing this well?
Personally, I don't have the banding issues that you got with lock screen and sound bar

I dont know about other issues you mention here ..
But I do noticed one thing .. S22 ultra poor reception than a cheap branded phone available on market

I had the bit starving issue with the animated lock screen, when it's animated it looks blocky. The wallpaper is fine for me

Restarting the phone occasionally helps in increasing speed somehow. And reception for me has been fine for me. Unfortunate circusmatances for you I guess.
