Saying hello... WarBeard is inbound on the G7 - Moto G7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey everyone,
Just picked up this device the other day, looking forward to playing with all of you.
Is anybody working on TWRP for the device? Flashable updates? If we can get TWRP locked down, it'll be easy to start kicking ROMs out.
Love the G7. These "budget" devices have been kicking ass lately (hardly budget based on their specs... I mean the Pixel 3 has the same amount of RAM LOL).
ANYWAYS... Check in and say hi.

What issues specifically?
That's normal until things get ironed out. They'll need people to test for bugs.

** Check this out!! ** CONFIRMED & WORKING ROOT METHOD!!

You guys HAVE root! AND, it does not even trip KNOX!! *Update* He just fixed the APK so test it out again if you can. *Update* FIXED & WORKING!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/root-pingpongroot-s6-root-tool-t3103016
BTW: This is NOT my root method, I am simply informing you of the thread so make sure to thank him over there!
Make sure and read the OP and I would remove Kinguser and switch over to SUPER SU. ( Just my opinion ) He is also working on a Super SU version as well. :good:
Now you guys can come out and play with the T-Mobile & Sprint people! Well, half of the way anyways... :good:

No, I would have if I wasn't already Knox tripped with my T-Mobile S6... Kinda sucks cause this will be a good thing for Samsung Pay! Also, this new method is going to open up TONS of new devices for root! This guy is brilliant!
Hmmmmm....
My phone is on the list, G920VVRU1AOC3
But, am I brave enough to go for it??

Of course you are! Come on.... I am sure some more simple method will be developed but until then you would want to follow the directions closely. Still in Beta as well and everything is not 100% but I can guarantee he got it rooted! It's just whether you can write to certain partitions or not.

I hope this comes soon for the Edge.
If anyone tries this could you report back on how it goes. I'd be willing to buy a S6 today if this materializes into a true way to root the Verizon s6. I can't tell from the op, but is this root method have wp off? I know someone got root for the turbo a few months ago and it was basically useless.

I've downloaded and installed the APK, but at the moment my phone just shuts off and isn't rooted when I reboot. Gonna keep trying different things and keep an eye on that thread
Doesnt work. I tried on my S6. Just reboots and does nothing.
I can confirm did not work for me phone just reboots but a few people have reported working on vzw s6 this is just in beta phase 1 so hopefully with a update it will become more stable.
This looks promising will be trying this after work today on my vzw s6.

What this is going to give you (if it works on your firmware version) is JUST root. So you will be able to do certain things but you CANNOT flash custom roms cause that has to do with the bootloader, and that bad boy is LOCKED tight. I'm not saying it won't happen but probably not. Hopefully someone starts developing Safestrap again (for this device). I left Verizon long ago because of their crap with locking down phones but I still thought you guys would like to know the info i found, seeing as it's a given that every Verizon device will make it next to impossible to achieve root. The root method for the Turbo was a different kind of exploit but I am pretty sure that this method will at least allow you to do some of the basic "must have" rooting tweaks. ie. Ad blocker, totally removing bloat, Hotspot mods, etc. Best thing to do is follow him over at the link I posted. Hope u guys get this all figured out and remember, this is just in beta right now, so if you can't get root that does not mean 100% for sure that this won't work 4 you. Like I said, follow the brilliant guy that made this all possible. :good:

I have seen a few Verizon guys post success and my friend just successfully rooted his verizon S6 as well. This exploit literally just came out today but I can tell you that the guy working on this has just made root available for a hell of a lot more devices than just the S6! I have seen you over there @jparasita so I know you are probably getting frustrated but hang in there, I'm sure there is a reason that this is happening to a lot of people. Hopefully something simple! Good luck guys!

No frustrations I realise that its only in beta phase 1 so its possible with a simple fix it might become more stable. Plus like you said with this exploit you are only gonna be able to do a few limited things until someone comes along and makes something like safestrap. Plus im pretty sure the system will still be write protected. A lot of hurdles to overcome to fully modify this phone. Can you tell me what kernal date youre friend had that was success?

Didn't work for me, but hey, it might sooner or later

Working now!

Getting back to it.

Hello xda friends,
I've dusted off the relay 4g & playing around with android again to keep my hands busy.
My Question of the day is, are there enough people still using this device to be testers? I've been looking at porting since that's just what I've always done for fun, and currently I'm using the LG G3 on verizon so I won't be able to do network/data testing on tmo.
The other thing, I left off on 4.2/4.3 and wondering if anyone can fill in the blanks regarding issues going to KK/LP.
I've already read some posts regarding memory leaks in LP, and Recovery issues I think..
Happy Modding!

Dude, drop in to IRC. Dev is pretty close to dead on Relay right now, since Nard and I don't *have* relay's any more, and Magamo's busy in his new parental role...
Before I got rid of mine, I did get 5.0 running on it reasonably OK. Some of the inherent 5.0 glitches made the experience slightly.... crunchy, but it was fully functional. 5.1 would probably work pretty well on it.

Finally got 5.1.1 booting using your device tree. Looks like sound, wifi & BT is borked. Likely do to cm-12.0 pulls & needs fixed.
Thanks for the direction & I'll see what I can put together, I'm sure I'll have to mess with the 8960-common now.
I'm surprised cm is not supported pasted 11. As I didn't have to mod frameworks?
Well, thanks again!

As of the last time TeamApexQ's repos were touched, CM12 booted, but audio was borked due to a CM change that I never had the time to figure out. -- Never did get around to starting with Android 5.1 on this thing. Nor did we touch Omni after the 5 upgrade, because for a long time their CAF trees were... inadequate.
Eugene, did you gave up on our relay? I hope not.
Just found this thread. Been hoping for signs of life (although this thread is looking pretty dead). Still using the relay until it dies, and would love to see LP or MM on it.

I'm still here, though I agree things are looking pretty dead. Within the next few weeks, I plan to either be gone from here, or be looking into becoming a new nightly provider.
My wife's Relay is having problems, and I fear it's a hardware fault. The proximity detector seems to get stuck. When she takes it away from her ear, the screen stays black, and I'm really not sure what lets it clear its state and display the screen, again. If it's a hardware fault, we're buying two new phones in the next few weeks. I've tried all sorts of things, except a factory reset, and that's next.
If the factory reset works, and I'm able to get it running again, then I want to see new nightlies, even if I have to be the one building them. The sticky part will be getting enough assistance to where I can start building them.
I still use my Relay 4g as my main phone and I'm trying to port LP to it. But I'm still a noob so it will take some time
My main too. I really need to find the time to poke around the code for this thing..
Just noticed this thread now (ha!). I'm using my Relay as my backup phone - but hey, sometimes I do need a backup! Happy to do some testing if it helps. I'd love to have 5.1.1 on it.
Im still rockin the relay also as my main device, but I'm probably gonna get the priv for Christmas.
If there will be cm12.1 I will install it.

[REQ]Motorola Android 6.0 Soak Test

Hi. Me and the other developers have been trying to get our hands on the new Android 6.0 boot.img. If anyone is running the soak test people please PM me.
Thanks
Shawn
Did they actually start the soak test, or is it still the test drive?
Does it benefit you that much to have a pre release version? If you want to make roms, why wouldn't you wait until the final version of the software is released? I know that, usually, a soak is very similar to a final release (and who knows with these "test drives"), but not always. And since the 5.0 botched release caused several problems, why wouldn't you wait?
None of us got it. Unless the few people who beta-tested it not (soak tested) it.
Its against NDA so no one will bother

Could be that no one has it. Remember it is a small test group that got it. Soak is not live yet (maybe). Plus people agreed to be quiet about it so even if we got an invite it wont be public. Either way we all will have fun in a few weeks

Its going to be stock android 6 + moto assist, and android 6 is a refinement of the already stable android 5.1.
Want to know what it will be like? Watch this and imagine there is a moto assist app in the app drawer

LOL. Thanks. Already familiar with MM from my N6, more curious about the specifics of MM on the MXPE test drive, such as stability, doze improvements on our hardware, completeness, etc

Well it was too prepare. They want to get a mostly stable version before they push it to the super soakers to make sure the 5.0 bricking disaster doesn't happen again. From what I have read we do NOT want them to rush things. Once it is safe the soakers will get it and then everyone. As long as it is within a month I do not mind if it means smooth and mostly bug free
I welcome the caution of Motorola. Or maybe they are already soak testing but the group members are so good they are keeping it on the DL

I can confirm the 5.0 disaster ... It was Lollipop massacre ... It happened on the Moto G (First Gen), one of the first moto device to receive the lollipop update through Soak test ... the image was leaked and people started flashing them, there were some minor bugs in the image, and whenever people tried to get to stable kitkat, or stock Rom in order to get official update their phone got permanently bricked ...
There are major changes in the Bootloader during the major android updates, so it's best to take precautions and wait patiently till someone confirms a proper procedure .
I can confirm the soak test isn't fake.
Didn't want to share this whatever.

Marshmallow will get here when it gets here.

I understand the craving for an update, but it seems every week there's a new thread asking when Marshmallow will arrive. I understand the irony of this statement, but please do not make anymore threads asking when the update will be out. Those are questions better suited for your carrier (I'm sure they have forums). Threads promoting discussion about Marshmallow are okay, such as asking what you're looking forward to most, but simply asking when it's going to be out is not making it come any faster.
While you're waiting, try flashing some of the ROMs, Kernels, and recoveries that our fantastic devs so graciously provide to us for free. @TEKHD, @jovy23, @foreverloco, @dr.ketan, @arter97, and @UpInTheAir (If I've forgotten anyone, I apologize) have all done amazing work for our device on the current version of Android. Take this time to test out their ROMs/kernels and if you get bored, flash another one. Explore all the settings and options. There is a lot you can do with what you've been given here.
Sorry. Rant over.
Thank you for saying what needed to be said. Although I am currently on the latest ROM and kernel from @TEKHD and @UpInTheAir, I was stock for the first 5 months of owning the Note 5. It runs more than fine on 5.1.1, and for everyone complaining that the M8 or M9 are getting MM on T-Mobile before us, there's a good reason for it. HTC has released MM for the international models and Samsung hasn't yet. T-Mobile can't release what they don't have.
I am also running stock 5.1.1 with root on my N5 and it's perfectly fine with LP. I'm in no rush for the MM update. There's a chance it may bring issues along with it and I read somewhere that it would be some time in March when we can see the update. Everyone just needs to hang tight.
@NotATreoFan @tamelion1117
Well said, sirs. I'd personally prefer to wait longer if it meant that most of the bugs and issues are ironed out when it finally hits our device. A solid, smooth update that comes a tad late is better than a half-assed buggy update that comes immediately.

Just what needed to be said, it may not have the new software, but I love my Note 5 just the way it is, and when Marshmallow comes out, it will be even better.

People generally feel there need to want the latest and greatest, in this case, the most up to date version of Android. I personally don't think MM will add much benefit to the note 5 because 5.1.1 is already quite good. Especially when you compare it to previous versions on tw.
If you want mm so badly, simply sell your note 5 and buy a nexus 6p. ;p it's crossed my mind a few times.
I was just thinking about this. As soon as an upgrade is pending many people all of a sudden seem to be unhappy with the phone until they get it.

Word. Nevermind that 5.1.1 runs like a bandit on the Note 5. Doze and permission control will be nice, but Samsung implemented the app optimization feature and the ROM I'm running right now has permission control as well. I'm not sure what else people want.
I'm sure the same people crying for the update will also be the ones to pin point and complain about every minor bug like it's some experience-breaking issue.
Just wait until it arrives and 37 threads pop up from sub 50 post users all notifying us of the update. Just trying to boost their thanks/post count and acting like little kiddies. I remember the note 4 general thread when an update dropped.
Anyone that is getting ansy for the MM update should read up on the 5.0 lollipop update on the Moto X 2014, my previous phone. Was one of the first to get the update, and so it had all the bugs. Didn't ever get totally sorted out, although 5.1 made it much better.
It could be around the corner:
"Samsung Galaxy Note 5 - February 2016"
Sammy is working on it, which means we'll likely see it late in the summer...ish.

It looks like the AT&T Note5 has a beta test that just went live today, not many testers but someone that is on XDA got it, might be some kind of beta firmware floating around in the not too distant future. Also good news that Samsung is getting that far on any carrier, might have something for Tmo in the not so distant future.

Take this with a *HUGE* grain of salt, but I would suspect they're testing MM on AT&T because they're the largest GSM carrier in the US, and they also love to modify the builds more than T-Mobile does.
I doubt we'll see mm until the gs7 arrives

Dream last night

So I've been telling myself that I will NOT flash any custom ROM's on this phone because the stock ROM is already so good.
But I had a dream last night that I was just about to get on an airplane for an important business trip.
And then I noticed someone dropped an alpha Lineage OS ROM for our phone.
So I'm sitting in my airport lobby chair and decide to flash it right then and there.
Knowing that I absolutely MUST have my phone available during this business trip.
But I just HAD to try the ROM anyways.
And sure enough, the rest of the dream was about me troubleshooting why I couldn't get the phone to work anymore.
I was just about to give up and test SMS when I woke up.
Weird dream.
I think I missed my flight too.

LMAO, hilarious
I'm in the same boat as you - really wanting to not root/custom rom this up...
On previous phones, countless days have gone by where I download the ROM on my phone, Flash it on my phone, then something here and there won't work... GPS, sound during phone call, etc.
Then I have to get it all figured out and 1 or 2 days have gone by.
It used to be fun...
But every now and then I think "man, I could fix the memory problems by using a different kernel" or "man, this would sound so much better with Viper4Android on it"..... soooo freakin tempting

If you'd have read your "dream thread' closely, you would have seen that voice calls don't work, so that's on "dream you", not "dream me"
Another day or two on the ETA, possibly more, no sense in releasing if we can't at least use the device as a "phone", lol
lmao thank you for laughing with me. :good:
Interesting dream.
Almost a year ago, when I bought my Pixel 2 I dreamed that I was going to use stock rom forever because it was very good, but dreams are just dreams, you know...
I think Bluecross will follow the same route.

It runs OK, I guess, gestures are a little wonky, but that's low priority. Main issue is no sound when making calls, I'm working with several devs from different ROM groups, trying to work the problem out. As this "bug" is not only limited to Lineage, it's all ROMs that have been built so far.
Sorry, @CZ Eddie for the OT,

No, I'm not gonna do Lineage, too buggy for the P3 at this time, and I don't want to go through the effort of fixing, lol. A friend and I decided to do "our own thing", hence Scorpion, we're gonna make it into exactly what we want from a ROM
CZ Eddie, you're guide here;
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/info-how-restored-to-stock-soft-t3494478
Was sent from heaven, and helped me save my soft bricked Pixel 3 XL. I know that guide is outdated for our 3 XLs, but I just made sure I downloaded the most recent files of everything, and of course Crosshatch specific files too. And it worked like a dream. THANK YOU.
Any plans to make a step-by-step detailed guide like this for the Pixel 3 XL, from the beginning on how to install TWRP Recovery and Root, etc... ?
I borked my phone trying to install TWRP, after already been rooted for a month, but today decided to install Recovery, and that became a major nightmare and super F up on my part. Some guides are very vague and minimal on details.

How did you bork you phone. This is the easiest phone to root and load twrp on
1. Have all updated files on pc
2. Boot to bootloader
3. Unlock bootloader (will wipe phone)
4. Reboot. Set up. Turn on debugging. Load twrp.zip and magisk.zip to internal memory.
5. Boot to bootloader.
6. Boot twrp.img
7. Once in twrp flash twrp.zip on internal storage
8. Flash magisk on internal storage
9. Reboot to system.
10. Profit.
