Getting back to it. - Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G

Hello xda friends,
I've dusted off the relay 4g & playing around with android again to keep my hands busy.
My Question of the day is, are there enough people still using this device to be testers? I've been looking at porting since that's just what I've always done for fun, and currently I'm using the LG G3 on verizon so I won't be able to do network/data testing on tmo.
The other thing, I left off on 4.2/4.3 and wondering if anyone can fill in the blanks regarding issues going to KK/LP.
I've already read some posts regarding memory leaks in LP, and Recovery issues I think..
Happy Modding!
~Eugene

Kk was more battery friendly than Lollipop is...in its current state...there's still all sorts of source floating around for it

Dude, drop in to IRC. Dev is pretty close to dead on Relay right now, since Nard and I don't *have* relay's any more, and Magamo's busy in his new parental role...
Before I got rid of mine, I did get 5.0 running on it reasonably OK. Some of the inherent 5.0 glitches made the experience slightly.... crunchy, but it was fully functional. 5.1 would probably work pretty well on it.

teamapexq is the github.

Well I manage to build and boot 5.1.1, but has a ton of bugs currently.
Cam, BT, radio and a few ui issues, kinda cool to see it boot.

Finally got 5.1.1 booting using your device tree. Looks like sound, wifi & BT is borked. Likely do to cm-12.0 pulls & needs fixed.
Thanks for the direction & I'll see what I can put together, I'm sure I'll have to mess with the 8960-common now.
I'm surprised cm is not supported pasted 11. As I didn't have to mod frameworks?
Well, thanks again!

I've posted booting repositories if anyone is interest in getting cm officially supported again. Might jump into irc later to night & ask the guys about it.

As of the last time TeamApexQ's repos were touched, CM12 booted, but audio was borked due to a CM change that I never had the time to figure out. -- Never did get around to starting with Android 5.1 on this thing. Nor did we touch Omni after the 5 upgrade, because for a long time their CAF trees were... inadequate.

Eugene, did you gave up on our relay? I hope not.

Just found this thread. Been hoping for signs of life (although this thread is looking pretty dead). Still using the relay until it dies, and would love to see LP or MM on it.

I'm still here, though I agree things are looking pretty dead. Within the next few weeks, I plan to either be gone from here, or be looking into becoming a new nightly provider.
My wife's Relay is having problems, and I fear it's a hardware fault. The proximity detector seems to get stuck. When she takes it away from her ear, the screen stays black, and I'm really not sure what lets it clear its state and display the screen, again. If it's a hardware fault, we're buying two new phones in the next few weeks. I've tried all sorts of things, except a factory reset, and that's next.
If the factory reset works, and I'm able to get it running again, then I want to see new nightlies, even if I have to be the one building them. The sticky part will be getting enough assistance to where I can start building them.

I still use my Relay 4g as my main phone and I'm trying to port LP to it. But I'm still a noob so it will take some time

My main too. I really need to find the time to poke around the code for this thing..

Just noticed this thread now (ha!). I'm using my Relay as my backup phone - but hey, sometimes I do need a backup! Happy to do some testing if it helps. I'd love to have 5.1.1 on it.

Im still rockin the relay also as my main device, but I'm probably gonna get the priv for Christmas.

If there will be cm12.1 I will install it.

Same. The Blackberry Priv I hear has a super disappointing keyboard. I'm hoping Samsung picks up on the idea that people still want keyboards and makes SOMETHING for us.

In our development section we have someone working (successfully) on getting us CM7, and another person getting us ASOP.
So if anything, this phone is more alive than it has been in months.

The work on GB just started a week ago. Shut up and stop trolling. The only way this phone will ever get GB is if people like you stay out of the way of the people who are getting work done.
Third party development for the Sidekick 4G has NOT ceased. I can see that we at the very most have 5 active projects continuing. Officially, T-Mobile has stopped support and updates for the Sidekick 4G however. Our only hope, is to support those who are continuing to bust their ass for the Sidekick 4G when they could just go get a nicer phone and develop for that instead.
Source of T-Mobile's Announcement : I can't post it because I don't have enough posts to link to outside resources, just a quick Google search will show you that.
I'm looking forward to a brighter future for this device, please be more possitive. I know this device has potential.

Then device itself is quite nice. If we do get AOSP/CM, I'll be satisfied with the SK4G for a few more years. Five row keyboards are a rarity for some reason, and I need one for SSH.

yeah we slowed down dev but look it doesnt matter as long as we are a 4g phone we could do just the same as the epic 4g did and not dev for awhile but burst with everything soon enough it just takes time and devs to get the phone

That's true, the Epic 4G did eventually get CM support after a long delay.
However, it also has approximately two zillion units in deployment. The SK4G has more of a struggle ahead, with far fewer handsets in the field.
I wish more sysadmin types would realize what a great device the Sidekick 4G is for remote management. Top-notch SSH client, flexible VPN options. That user base could really benefit from the SK4G's virtues.
Another thing about the Sidekick 4G that I like to mention is that on stock, it's crap. Although, when flashed with a custom ROM and proper tweaks applied, the phone's structure and hardware becomes more than worth the price. For example, the price is sub-200$, which is great for this phone. (brand new too)
Code:

Price is 182$ w/ free shipping straight. The only issue is Hong Kong's slow shipping. (also the phone is unlocked)

I've been with the sidekick line for quite some time now, they have always been a tried and true phone, so i'm loyal to SK. It was a bit of an adjustment goin from danger to android. (this is my first android device lol) and let's face it, the stock SK4G was a pain... ran slow, choppy, a little disapointing.
But after finding XDA and the awesome people that contribute here, i learned a few things. Had fun learning them too. Now i am happy with my my SK4G completely.
Yea, Tmob stopped production after only 11 months, but like alot of people loyal to the SK line, and with some help from the cool peeps on XDA, i'll be rockin this phone for quite some time.
btw, some rumors about SK gettin another revamp? should be interesting.
Rockin the Glorious Overdose v2 ROM. great work!
Yeah well if you go with the ics that I have it thinks its galaxy nexus which is funny but I think sk might be getting cyanogenmod

If you wanna see a phone that died look at the LG Ally when it came out.

I am out -- Good bye

Hey everyone, It has come time for me to leave. As much fun as it has been in here for the last year plus, it is time for me to move on. I have noticed that a lot of our core group has really been moving on as well.
I will forward the information on how to fix the boot sequence for the CM based ROMs to alteredlikeness so that he can put that into the next builds for his CM based work.
I will still be in and out once in a while, and I will still be on IRC and help out the other devs in the background, but I will not be hanging out in here everyday as I have been. I have put my Atrix2 up for sale, and I am in the process of getting a galaxy nexus to run the new ubuntu phone OS on, and I am going to switch to working only on that for dev work for the time being.
It has been great and I wish everyone the best of luck and best wishes.

Yeah this was a really hard decision, and after thinking on it for most of the holidays and then Ubuntu making their announcement, I knew that is what I was really after, and where I really would LOVE to spend my free time.
I am in no way abandoning you or anyone here, and I will still answer my PMs, because I will still be participating on XDA, I will just be focusing on the ubuntu phone OS instead. As I said I will still hang out in our IRC rooms and check in here every so often, but I am sure it will be less and less as time goes on.

Thank you! Same to you.
I am hoping to see some of you guys on the Ubuntu side of the fence soon. I saw several people note that they were excited, and a used Galaxy Nexus is not very expensive right now, and it has an HSPA+ radio just like this phone, so.... it should be pretty close, but that it is more like the SGS3 in hardware, and it is fully unlocked like the SGS3. I am also keeping the SGS3 and going to work to get that on Ubuntu too, so for those that have that phone too, I will still see some of you over there, with hopefully some great ubuntu work that I will be doing.
I decided this after my last attempt at killing the bootloader on this phone frustrated me so much, and the fact that I have 2 devices that are unlocked right now that I can do anything I want with, that this was my only real reason for doing this (freedom).
I have also noticed that the dynamic has changed in here as of late, and that just gave me the extra push to move forward.
Again, you all have fun and keep the good stuff flowing in here and I will speak to everyone soon I hope.
Thanks!
Thanks for all you work!
I recently purchased 2 lapdocks to use with my Raspberry Pi. While waiting for my HDMI adapters to show up from China [still waiting], I got bored and bought an atrix2 this past weekend and was excited to find that you had done some great work with WebTop.
Sadly my atrix2 was already OTA ICS as I was stoked to have a real desktop OS running on this phone. However, I understand the need to move on.
Looks like I'll need to pick up a Galaxy Nexus soon!
I think it's a wise move on your part.. all of us, and especially you, are limited by Moto's lockdown.. and I too am really looking forward to Ubuntu for phones.. they are going to change things and contribute to mobile OS's in a big way. Good things will come of this, and I will definitely be joining you in dev'ing it in the future...
Without being too dramatic - we will keep pushing forward with the foundation that basically you alone put together here.. until we all eventually move on to other devices... sigh.. everything's so fleeting..
Thanks again, Jim! Ttyl..

Btw, even i'm contemplating getting a Galaxy Nexus.. maybe in a month when the salary comes
My best regards to you Jim, one of the best around.
Will certainly miss you sir, and all the hard work you've brought to this community.
Does your supersekrit CM10 builds feature the work that you had done towards webtop, or should I simply enjoy the devices that I have au natural and not worry about being on bleeding edge of cool?
Thank you again, and enjoy your new toys.

Motorola pretty much made it impossible to do anything proper with this phone, which is sad because hardware wise it's about as solid as they come. It's been an uphill fight since day one, and we couldn't have had a better fighter for our cause. Like many others, I want to say thank you for helping us along keeping this phone up to par. I'm due for an upgrade, so I'm sure I'll be bugging you in another forum before you know it. Thanks Jim.

There might still be one or two things I have hidden up my sleeve that I may still release soon.
As far as the bootloader goes, yeah that is not getting unlocked. I tried for a little more than a year. I know when to finally call it quits. I really had a good one there with the rootkit and booting off the sdcard, but there were still checks that moto has for that too, so....
As I said earlier in this thread, my time in here is going start to taper off slowly and over time I will just fade off into the sunset... LOL.

Porting does not work on the A2. We have NEVER been able to successfully port any ROMS to the A2, but don't let me stop you from trying, if you can get it too boot and all the hardware and a kernel working, more power to you! I gotta say that would be pretty sweet, but since we have figured out the secret of compiling and using our kernel as a base, and compiling open source roms like that, we/you can have any roms you basically want now, with the stock kernel still on the phone.
Yes kexec works, since I helped with kexec. There was a post that I did post about it. We do not have any ROMS that take advantage of it though.
you are the best dude!! Thanks for the ROMs:crying: but hope u change ur decesion

This community has ran its course

Most custom rom flashers seem to last 6 mobths on a particular phone. The first bunch defected to the the Note 2 and the last bunch to the Galaxy S4.

What is the purpose of this thread? Nobody, not a dev nor any "regular" user, owes anything in the form of continued updates for customized software. Technology advances and phones improve very quickly. It's been a year since release and most roms have already improved upon what Samsung put out. AOSP takes the reins about a year after a phones release since that's the time when the OEM stops pushing OTAs. AOSP sees continued updates whereas OEM firmware sees fewer updates.
So I ask, what feature or function are you unable or wanting to use that our phone hardware can support?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Most older phones still see development via AOSP roms. The last time I checked samsung is still developing updates on this phone.
Idk about any further, but we'll see 4.2.2 tw for sure I think. I believe I read they're working on it but delayed. Dev work has been better with this than my old phone(droid 3).

I personally don't feel the sg4 is worth the upgrade, it should be called the sg3+
not too mention it's getting locked down hard..
That is the primary reason why people are still buying the S3.
Yes. Go buy an s4 asap. Development is currently sky rocketing...
Like others have said, this is an unnecessary thread. A bunch of AOSP roms have active nightlies and several TW roms are also being updated. The problem with TW roms are that once you get everything put into them, there's not much more you can do. The code is based off Samsung source so everything is already there. the only thing there is to do is rebase when a new ota comes out.
Go try out an AOSP rom. They really run well on the s3.
Lol AOSP is still booming on the HTC incredible 2. I think that we'll see stuff for much longer since the inc2 with as old and outdated as it is, its still rocking over there.
I'm loving this phone, there's something new everyday for it.

All I have to say is we need to stick together. I think the biggest reason development slows is when the community stops responding to the forums. The people are there but get bored and no longer respond to the development provided even though they take advantage of the development. When the community stops responding the development slows down because developers no longer feel the demand. So if your out there respond and keep things flowing! I posted a thread with a script for CM10 on friday. 200 people looked at it without so much as a "this script sucks" or one "thanks". Maybe nobody cares about that thread I don't know, but when you post and nobody responds you kind of feel like why bother. IMO it's the communities responsibility to keep development going. Not the developers! So if you have something on you mind post it. Let's keep things moving and stick together!

THIS . very well said sir. :good:
The HTC One may slow down development when it comes, I for one will be getting that phone. I will still be keeping my SG3 tho. (will be the first phone I actually keep rather than sell to buy new phone, I really love this phone)
It was the Galaxy S III community - and its massive, relevant history + recent topics here - which gave me enough how-tos, tools + what-if ideas that led to my:
1. Bringing a relative's phone back from a watery death
2. Rooting + installing a custom recovery on the resurrected, stock and locked phone - despite it no longer accepting touch screen input (i.e., hardware short was evident on the display connector across at least two pins)
3. Pulling 1.5 years of photos and videos + app settings from the partially crippled phone, making its owner rather ecstatic
It was an AT&T GSIII, but it information - much of it active threads - gleaned across the XDA Galaxy S III provider topics helped me finally do the above.
Heck, when I gave away my HTC Droid Incredible not long ago, even that model still had active ROM development happening.

[DISCUSSION] Cyanogenmod 12 for D2LTE?

To start off, I know it is far too early to have any info on, but I feel that starting a thread a tad early may help to consolidate the topic once the next version of Android hits the shelves. For now, this is intended to be a speculation or discussion thread. As time goes on, it will hopefully contain facts.
Do you all think that the Galaxy S3 will get the next version of Cyanogenmod? The phone is "nearing the end of its life", as phones tend to have a 2 year life because of contracts. The phone is still very capable in my opinion, and I would love to see it get some Android L love, since I plan on keeping it for another year.

Same here about having the phone until next year. I'd love to see it on here but it's truly hard to say

So Android 5.0 Lollipop was revealed today!
Any thoughts on whether it will come to the S3 via Cyanogenmod?

I think it may be about a month or so. Just downloaded the most recent snapshot version of CM11 and it's flawless so far. I'd like to definitely see CM12 before I move over to the Nexus 6

Shapes....does GPS and Bluetooth work? I use both and am about ready to just return to stock/rooted since I have had nothing but issues since CM updated the device trees a while back. I have had one or the other but not both work lol.

Works like a charm on the latest snapshot of CM11 for the d2lte
From my CM11 S3
I can't get a gps lock on the latest snapshot or any of the October builds. I go back to the snapshot from 8/5 and all is good. I have tried mb1, mf1 and mf1 w/ ne1 modem. I am at a loss.
@capt730 I'm running the newest build of snapshot. I have no issues with GPS locking on, I personally don't use GPS a lot though

Have you tried the tightening of screws trick?
Do a test before using GPS Status app, make sure WiFi is off to get an accurate result.
then open your back cover and undo the screws a bit, then tighten the top left one really good, then the rest really good as well. If that doesn't work, try making sure the GPS antenna gets a good contact by prying up on it a tad (there are other methods in the GPS fix thread), but that's what I did.
You need a very small screwdriver to be able to do it properly. I use the iPhone repair kit for 93 cents delivered off amazon, since even my precision screwdriver set was too large.
If you use the right size, you can REALLY crank them down without stripping them, but definitely use good judgement. It took two times (two levels of cranking) before I got results.
Sounds too simple to be true, but SO many people fixed the issue this way.
But test using the app again afterward.

I completely disassembled my S3 lol and cleaned all the contacts and adjusted the antenna. It works on stock and on M9, but not on the most recent nightlies or M11. I am off tomorrow, so I think I may just Odin back to stock and reroot etc. Get a lock and then flash M11.

Marshmallow will get here when it gets here.

I understand the craving for an update, but it seems every week there's a new thread asking when Marshmallow will arrive. I understand the irony of this statement, but please do not make anymore threads asking when the update will be out. Those are questions better suited for your carrier (I'm sure they have forums). Threads promoting discussion about Marshmallow are okay, such as asking what you're looking forward to most, but simply asking when it's going to be out is not making it come any faster.
While you're waiting, try flashing some of the ROMs, Kernels, and recoveries that our fantastic devs so graciously provide to us for free. @TEKHD, @jovy23, @foreverloco, @dr.ketan, @arter97, and @UpInTheAir (If I've forgotten anyone, I apologize) have all done amazing work for our device on the current version of Android. Take this time to test out their ROMs/kernels and if you get bored, flash another one. Explore all the settings and options. There is a lot you can do with what you've been given here.
Sorry. Rant over.
Thank you for saying what needed to be said. Although I am currently on the latest ROM and kernel from @TEKHD and @UpInTheAir, I was stock for the first 5 months of owning the Note 5. It runs more than fine on 5.1.1, and for everyone complaining that the M8 or M9 are getting MM on T-Mobile before us, there's a good reason for it. HTC has released MM for the international models and Samsung hasn't yet. T-Mobile can't release what they don't have.
I am also running stock 5.1.1 with root on my N5 and it's perfectly fine with LP. I'm in no rush for the MM update. There's a chance it may bring issues along with it and I read somewhere that it would be some time in March when we can see the update. Everyone just needs to hang tight.
@NotATreoFan @tamelion1117
Well said, sirs. I'd personally prefer to wait longer if it meant that most of the bugs and issues are ironed out when it finally hits our device. A solid, smooth update that comes a tad late is better than a half-assed buggy update that comes immediately.

Just what needed to be said, it may not have the new software, but I love my Note 5 just the way it is, and when Marshmallow comes out, it will be even better.

People generally feel there need to want the latest and greatest, in this case, the most up to date version of Android. I personally don't think MM will add much benefit to the note 5 because 5.1.1 is already quite good. Especially when you compare it to previous versions on tw.
If you want mm so badly, simply sell your note 5 and buy a nexus 6p. ;p it's crossed my mind a few times.
I was just thinking about this. As soon as an upgrade is pending many people all of a sudden seem to be unhappy with the phone until they get it.

Word. Nevermind that 5.1.1 runs like a bandit on the Note 5. Doze and permission control will be nice, but Samsung implemented the app optimization feature and the ROM I'm running right now has permission control as well. I'm not sure what else people want.
I'm sure the same people crying for the update will also be the ones to pin point and complain about every minor bug like it's some experience-breaking issue.
Just wait until it arrives and 37 threads pop up from sub 50 post users all notifying us of the update. Just trying to boost their thanks/post count and acting like little kiddies. I remember the note 4 general thread when an update dropped.
Anyone that is getting ansy for the MM update should read up on the 5.0 lollipop update on the Moto X 2014, my previous phone. Was one of the first to get the update, and so it had all the bugs. Didn't ever get totally sorted out, although 5.1 made it much better.
It could be around the corner:
"Samsung Galaxy Note 5 - February 2016"
Sammy is working on it, which means we'll likely see it late in the summer...ish.

I like the thread where the OP asks if anyone has received the update yet.

It looks like the AT&T Note5 has a beta test that just went live today, not many testers but someone that is on XDA got it, might be some kind of beta firmware floating around in the not too distant future. Also good news that Samsung is getting that far on any carrier, might have something for Tmo in the not so distant future.

Take this with a *HUGE* grain of salt, but I would suspect they're testing MM on AT&T because they're the largest GSM carrier in the US, and they also love to modify the builds more than T-Mobile does.
I doubt we'll see mm until the gs7 arrives
