The black strip above the top Speaker pops out! (Update 9-06-2019) - Asus ROG Phone Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi guys, I thought of writing this as a warning for current users and future buyers to watch out for.
My beloved ROG device(6 months old now) has its plastic/glass(I believe it's plastic) black strip exactly above the top Speaker grill pop out, that strip is simply glued i believe and its not a part piece of the top bezel as I thought it was just an attached piece. I started noticing it after doing some device cleanup. If you have a look from the sides of the device on a steady balanced surface you will notice the two tips of the strip popping out slightly. But mine are really visible from the side.
It is starting to annoy me to the point where I am thinking of my next device upgrade instead of simply contacting Asus Service Repair Center. I really hate to sell this device but I want to recoup some money for my next upgrade. When I try to push down that side tip there is a little bit of give which leads me to believe it's glued!
I thought of sharing this because I haven't found anyone reporting about it yet. So my advice don't try to clean that area too much even if you find some small fibers stuck in between the edges or the glue that is holding it together might start to wear.
Update 9-06-2019:
Since my post and with each day passing by the black strip started to peal more and more due to cleaning up that area from time to time.
The phone ended up looking like in pictures(3-6).
So I was in this dilemma should I just live with it, sell it or fix it. After weighing the pros and cons of each choice the obvious choice was to send it for repairs since my phone is still covered by warranty. Lo and behold it was the best choice to make, i am currently in China and since I bought the phone from there I had to send the phone to Shanghai where their service centers are. The customer service were very polite they offered to cover the shipping fees of taking the phone from me from Beijing where I was at the time to Shanghai and vise versa, they picked up the phone from me the following day of me contacting them and the phone returned back after exactly 4 days. They took it on Friday and it returned back fixed the following Tuesday without me going anywhere all through a carrier service. The latest photos depicts how the phone is back to how it's supposed to be.
I would like to thank ASUS Service Center in Shanghai for their work and also the repair man for his repairs (He was polite enough to contact me to further understand the phone situation). I highly recommend contacting them if you are facing any issues with your phone. Photos (7-9) shows the phone after repairs.

This has happened to someone on the ASUS support forum. Stange that so far only a problem with the top speaker and not the bottom.

Probably it's a design and implementation issue. The bottom strip is better sitted than the top one also it is flush straight with the bottom bezel without any side tips protruding like the top one. Anyways I dislike the idea of attaching any front piece with glue, both the top and bottom bezel should be 1 piece each but I guess they had to do it to lower the size of the bezels. I like the Nexus 6p speaker grills implementation but that phone had huge bezels.

For me the bottom strip is slightly protruding on the right side. Just noticed it now. The top strip is completely flush.
I hadn't even thought of this design detail before, but OP is completely right.

This happened to my phone about a month ago and it was both the bottom and top at the same time. Didn't matter that it was in a protective case either.

Yes I think it's covered by warranty, but I would suggest you call them first to inquire just in case. So you don't waste time.

Cuts my hand?

Hi all,
I got my Nexus one and ever since I am bugged with this "defect"?. I checked with one of my friends and his N1 got this defect too. Do you all have it?
The defect is that; Right above the volume control buttons, the back cover doesn't fit. Part of the front casing (being hard and all) cuts my fingers when i try to hold this thing in my right hand. And that's my hand I use for reading stuff..
My questions are:
- do you have the same problem?
- if not, how can I order a back cover that fits perfectly? since I am really really annoyed with this?
- if there's another way of fixing this issue, what would that be?
best,
kirpi
I am from Turkey and one of my friends brought this n1 to me by the way, so rma is not an option [and I actually unlocked the bootloader already anyways]
mine does not have this defect
http://www.htc.com/www/support/nexusone/
they might still get you a replacement part for a hardware defect that cut you.. id call or email them and ask
Mine is fine.
My first Nexus One did not have this defect. My replacement does.
Call HTC and have them send you a replacement battery cover. If the replacement doesn't fit, have them send you a new phone.
Yes, I noticed it too and looked all over the web to see if it was normal. Seeing as others have noticed it to and some have even had one that fits properly and one that doesn't I think I'll try to call HTC and have them send a free cover. Has anyone tried this and been successful?
well, apparently it is not normal. so I asked htc how can i replace the cover.
i actually wait for any vendor /chinese etc/ to produce spare parts so that i can buy one in case htc cannot provide the cover to turkey
The back cover is off for me as well, however, I would suggest manual labor to toughen up your hands.

Did you speak to someone at HTC? Did they offer to send a replacement cover? The thing is I can't tell if it's the cover that is off or if the phone part is off.
The back case is a little off. And from all the pictures of nexus one... it seems to be the case for everyone. However, nothing that will cut finger. I rubbed my finger on it for 2-3 minutes..nothing.
Everyone else.. look closely.. the metal part between volume and power is slightly visible as compared to smooth side of left. It is very slight and looks like a design change HTC made for placing volume and power key.
Called HTC and they agreed to send out a replacement battery cover so we'll see if that changes anything.
My first phone did not have this. My second did. I am now on my third and it has the slightest of a lip. You couldn't even notice it unless it was up to your eye. However my issue is with the screen. The right side of the screen is not flush with the phone, and there is a jagged lip that is horrid. I've been waiting for them to close my current ticket ( It's been 2 weeks, and have my money back in my back, but it still says testing phone ( yes , it was unlocked =) )). My old phone had massive dust under the screen.
Anyone else have this screen to phone edge problem? I almost regret selling my iPhone as the quality control seemed better. But I love my openess
I have no edge issues on the back cover...

yeah if that cut him WOW!!! hahahaha
What kind of moisturizer do you use? Your hands must be silky smooth! Like buttah!
I just noticed this defect today! I only noticed it after dropping it though (while sitting on the toilet it fell out of my pocket) so no damage of course but didn't notice before hand
well i am not that silky smooth but my skin may be a little too sensitive, i admit (allergetic person here)
However, the off part is not that much small in my casing.
Also it might be related to how I handle the phone. I use my right hand to hold it and my index finger and middle finger hovers around that problematic edge all the time while using it. I changed my handling (since i cannot change jobs for a manual labor that easily )
anyways, HTC has agreed to send me a back cover without even asking too many questions (obviously to a friend of mine in america) It made me think that, this is a well known issue. If that defect is with the chassis than I'll just wait for HTC desire sell mine after that
I received my replacement battery cover today and unfortunately it also does not fit. I called HTC and they are escalating the issue to the accessories department to have them investigate the battery covers not fitting the recently built Nexus Ones.
cekle
it is saddening to hear that.. the rma life cycle is like hell for me (since i reside in turkey) well, please let us know if ever a fitting cover is sent to you and i will re apply.
I think all the N1s have this defect. Mine is about a quarter of a millimeter off just above the battery. It is actually common in electronics for covers to not fit perfectly.
Do I really care about something being .25 mm off? No.
The better question is, should that be enough to cut your hand or even scratch it?
In any manufactoring there is a "tolarence" that defects have to be under in order to be shipped out. In reality, everything has a defect.
The amount this cover is off is certiantly within most manufactoring tolarences. The N1 isn't going on a space shuttle so there is no need to have a tolarence of .001 mm.
There, you learned somethhing amount engineering and manufactoring.
In all honesty, do I think the tolarence for the cover was a big too high? Yes, but you are building something that costs $175 to make and then turning around and selling it $179 already, some corners must be cut.

Mine does not have a gap.
It looks the same on both sides for me.

Moto G back case, doesn't fit flush? (btw, they are in stock in some tesco extra's)

Hey,
just got the 16GB from tesco.
When I opened it, (factory sealed box), the case was not clipped all the way on, and the top edge was open a bit. I opened it properly, from the bottom as instructed. Sim car already in, so clipped case on.
Basically there is 1mm gap, right next to the headphone jack and microphone on top of the phone. So, I took case off and had a look. The body has a space for an extra clip next to microphone, but the back case misses this one out (presumably to make room for rubber bit on microphone). I had a look at the pink case in the box, this also misses this clip.
Do other peoples phones case sit tight and flush on the top edge? or is my phone maybe wonky!! I worried the numpty who put the tesco sim in has distorted the chasis, or I just have been unlucky.. Its pretty minor, but its dust access so would prefer a tight fit!
FYI, there stock systems are screwed for xmas. Says out of stock everywhere, including when you phone up the store. I went to a tesco Extra, it had lots and lots in stock. Same price as Tesco direct. So, if you still want one for £129, 16GB. Get to your nearest tesco extra, you may well get one if they have a phoneshop instore.

The gap is there to allow leverage to get the back cover off. It's annoying that dust can get caught there but it would be a nightmare to remove it if there were no gap. I've had four now from various Tesco stores and they all have this gap, so no need to worry. Just clean out the dust now and again.
I had one which shipped with the case split open like you describe when I first opened it (also 16GB from Tesco).
That phone had a creaky back case - particularly noticeable applying slight pressure to the corner near the speaker. On looking at it I could see the clip on the front of the phone (not the back) was slightly too large, and so you wouldn't be able to fix it with a new back.
Phone went back as it also had a dead pixel in middle of the screen.
I think that the small plastic clips on the front part of the phone can be damaged by not taking the rear of the phone off carefully enough. If they are damaged your phone will always have a loose back, so best not to remove the back too often.
Yes mine is the same and annoyingly someone has used this gap to try and remove the backplate causing it to split at the microphone opening. (2nd hand phone).
So I suggest always removing the backplate from the microUSB end as these are not the sturdiest of backplates.

The phones from Tesco include a one page leaflet telling you to put your thumb on the moto logo on the rear and peel it up from the USB, definitely not from the top.
Seeing how flimsy the back is I personally crack open the bottom at the micro USB and then run my fingernail around the gap to pop the back off all the way. The hardest bit to release is the corner above the buttons, which is also where the rear of the case is weakest.

yea this is how I remove mine. The gap at the top is definitely not there to aid removal of the back. You start from the bottom like you say,
I actually swapped the black back for the pink one included. it fits much much tighter at the top so I think the back can be distorted on poor removal. The downside is I now have a pink phone until I get a replacement
cheers for the responses guys. Good to know its not a problem with my phone as such, just a design quirk..
just got a 16 GB XT1032 from US and i have this same kind of gap in between the body parts on the right side of the audio jack, when the display is facing ground. i freaked out when i found this out. i really expected perfect finishing from motorola.
did someone figure out why is this werid 1mm gap is there or some way to fix it?
Hi guys! I just bought my Moto G from Romania, 16 gb dual sim. Well, today I notice a tiny gap at the right side of the screen, between screen and plastic body. Did anyone else had something similar? The phone it's just great, but I'm a little worried because maybe dust can enter under the screen. I did'nt dropped or something, I just noticed today in the bright light. Thank you
There's no gap in mine. Are you guys making sure that your back cover is completely "snapped" on on all of its sides?

[Q] Should I RMA or return, or keep?

Hello XDA friends,
I have been wanting a Verizon or AT&T Note Pro 12.2 for a while -- I have a personal vendetta against Exynos and at this point can't do the wifi only model.
So, I went on Ebay and found one for $575, got it two days ago.
Issues:
1. Light bleed, holy mother sweet mary, light bleed. Top, bottom everywhere, its like looking at a cloudy sky.
2. The back has flex; a gentle touch flexes the fake leather back inwards, and its very noticeable. Its gotten to the point where the back cover is not actually perfectly smooth and has very tiny "lumps" inwards.
3. When the back flexes inwards, there seems to be a sharp point inside the tablet that pushes against the inside of the display itself; I pick it up with left hand, and there is a little "bubble wave" thing that the screen does on the top left hand side, kinda like when you poke an old LCD with your finger.
Thats really it... other than that it works. Should I RMA it to Samsung and have them repair, or should I return to ebay seller via a case (Seller is unresponsive, sadly)? Or is everyones Note Pro like this?
Thank you very much!
I noticed that flex right away. Same thing happens on mine, along with the LCD distortion.
I wish they would make it in a solid metal piece (ala iPad) instead of plastic.
If its noticeably worse than something like a display model, I'd lean towards a return as defect. Or, since it's a carrier branded device, you could probably get support from them. At least if you have an active account.

Dust trap issue

I should have made this thread long ago but I thought I'd be able to tolerate the problem. At the bottom of my phone between where the screen ends and the metal plate begins there is a small gap that extends the full width of the phone. I'd say about 1/2 to 2/3 mm separation. It's been there since I purchased the phone on October 30th. At the top its completely flush but on the bottom it is wide enough for dirt/dust to become trapped and has become a complete eyesore. Does any one else suffer from this? I hadn't seen anyone mention it.
I have the same issue. Guess I'm gonna have to live with it lol.. Replaced phone twice(not related to this issue) but the gap exists on all devices.

I absolutely love this phone but there are some issues that are clearly starting to stand out that leads me to believe this phone was a rush job.
Just run a very thin strip of clear glue (superglue?) along the seam. Seal it up right.
There is no real good reason not to, actually. Shouldn't affect anything if it's a very small amount.
Or maybe clear silicone would be better since it would be easily removed without residue.
I don't have that gap. However, where the Black-Out section surrounding the Front Facing Cameras meet the 2nd Screen, there's some faint light-bleed ... an obvious gap in materials to the back of the camera.
This reminds me of the Blackberry Tour 9630 with similar gap ... at the end of 9 months the screen looked dirty when it was off. Those old phones were harder to take apart and clean than today's phones, so it's not much of a concern for me as it only takes 10 minutes to do this and when it goes back together it'll be easier to make a permanent fix.

Note10+ (Top screen gap / space)

Hello,
Received my Note10+ yesterday, so far love the device.
I just noticed today (this morning) on bright sun / light a gap of couple of millimeters on top of the screen.
Looks like screen is not going to the edge on top side only, is this normal?
Image / full size:
https://screens.urimage.link/20190830_074945.jpg
Please see image for better view / understanding.
Thanks
that gap is for the sensors and speaker
Thank you very much for your time and responding to this thread.
I am a little bit confused, isnt the speaker at the bottom?
I had Samsung S10+ until yesterday, and i do not remember seeing gap like this (its not the same phone, but, probably similar design / i might be wrong though).
Thank you
The gap in the middle 2 arrows are the cut out for the front speaker the other gaps are where the screen meets the frame sometime there bigger on different phones its hut and miss
But if it bothers you exchange it for one that fits a bit better
Thank you very much for responding.
I think i have 15 days to replace / return the phone (i will re-check), but, if its kinda normal, and possible on any other phone, even replacement, i do not think its wise to do it.
Once i put case on, i do not even think it will be that visible (hardly visible now as well if not on bright light).
Biggest concern if this would affect IP68 in anyway
Thanks

I think there is a way you can test the ip rating without obviously putting it in water
Back when I had the xperia phones you could squeeze the device and check the pressure didn't rise and stay risen to indicate its water tight
Thank you again for your time.
I decided to test that gap by pouring water on it for about 20-30 seconds, no issues at all.
I will not bother with this, will just enjoy the phone.
Thanks again.
The picture link is not working. From my understanding the only small gap should be in the center where the top speaker hole is. But the left and right side of the top speaker till the corner should not have any gap. I am having the same issue. I'm going to check to see if other models are like that.
Same, should not be there.
In the end i decided to return the phone.
Upon closer inspections took some photos and judging by other demo units on display. They all have that white line gap. Some are more noticable than others. But same line can be seen. I compared 3 different phones from different stores. They all exist. It's seems like that white line looks like maybe it's the adhesive glue. The middle does not have it where the ear speaker cutout is, where the ear speaker hole ends on both side left and right white line is visible because of the extra gap on both sides and it appears that the line stops before the corner on each side of the glass on the top. It's maybe nitpicking buts it's really annoying. I checked on the S10 it's not present on that model and none I see on the Note 9 too. I checked. And since it's like white color can be visible inside the small gap line on the top where the glass meets up with the metal frame.
I actually just discovered that I can get a piece of paper down between the top of the screen and the frame on my Note 10 +!!!??? All along the top of the glass - from the top left corner to the right?
Is this what you are talking about? And will the phone still be waterproof? (There could still be a rubber membrane that prevents water from entering the insides of the phone...)
