Unable to send SMS - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

I am on Verizon and haven't had any issues in months but I started receiving this error earlier tonight. I can receive a message just fine. I have rebooted twice. Anyone else seeing anything? Stock unrooted with latest OTA. It happens with any SMS app.

We have had a lot of issues on Verizon but have not heard much from enough people, especially from the ones running pure stock. We have been having a lost signal issue where we get a slash through our network bars after a reboot, mostly rooted users after flashing something. I am hoping your issue is just a bad SIM card. But there are known issues with Verizon on this phone, I been waiting for more stock users to report anything. I don't have much advice except I would stay stock if this is the worst of your issues and maybe try getting a new SIM. I had this issue on my HTC 10 and a new SIM fixed it. Good luck buddy.

I registered just so I could say that I too have this same problem. I did the update and now I cant send text messages. I still receive them though.

I've been pure stock since June 9th. Had quite a few little issues to work through to get SMS MMS data and calling to work throughout the first month or so after launch.
May I ask what your Network mode and APN settings are?

I am stock and have had no issues since that first update that fixed MMS. All settings are default . It worked early yesterday and then just stopped for no reason. This is the first time i have seen any errors, even before when there were issues, there were no errors. My network mode is GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto, APN is vzwinternet with default settings.

Please keep us updated on your experience as we don't have many stock users report here. If any other stock users have had issues or have not had issues we would like to hear from them as well. This Verizon issue has been a mess.

Factory Reset seems to have done the trick. Now to spend the rest of the day setting things back up.

I am all stock as well, and have the unlocked version on Verizon. I have had this phone since it was released with no issues. There was an update install that happened a few days ago and that is when all the problems seem to have happened.
I get that same error screen.

That's good to hear. So how many months have you been using the stock U11 on Verizon without any other issues? This is good info I been wanting to hear about.

I just did a reset too, and now I am able to send SMS messages as well.

And you are only running with LTE band 13. Never any signal issues or slow data speed? And if you don't mind, what area do you live?

Yes only band 13. No issues but sometimes it can get slow in congested areas. I live outside of Charlotte and work in uptown.

Same here. Only LTE band 13 and middle of Nebraska. I have an hr commute to work through rural Nebraska and stay connected to LTE about 85% of the time according to the Open Signal app. The places I loose service is where my old original HTC One would drop down to 1X service. I have 4G LTE in places where my old phone would only have 3G, but the 4G isn't as strong of a signal as the 3G was. There is still enough to make a phone call though.

Thanks a lot guy's, I was having a great experience with only band 13 on stock I had no complaints. But your input kinda confirms what I have suspected, it's probably best to stay on stock with this phone on Verizon. It is very finnicky with Verizon, Verizon does not play nice with unlocked phones outside of their network unless you are Google or Apple with an agreement with Verizon. I had to send mine in for warranty repair, I hope I get it fixed with Verizon signal working.

I'm running pure stock and have had two major issues with this phone on vsw, 1st was about on October 3rd where after losing service in the plant I work in, service never came back unless I put in an att sim card or factory reset the phone. The factory reset worked then but took 2 days to get everything dialed back in.
Now I have this EXACT issue. I can receive sms, I can receive mms, I can send mms, but I cannot send sms.
are there some settings we can change inside the apn to make this work?
This issue again cropped up after losing service inside the plant and when I tried to go outside to get it back, this happens.

Data Drop Issue. Losing Data connectivity randomly?

Ok so let me describe the issue before I go into mine.
1. Loading any app but let's say twitter...
2. Hit refresh and you notice it's taking extra long to reload.
3. Arrows next to 4G get stuck in Upstream.
4. 4G Icon disappears and NEVER comes back.
5. You're left with nothing but cell bars.
Sometimes you can be doing nothing at all and this happens. If you go into "Mobile Data" under quick settings or regular settings it states "Turning On" but it never does. Mobile Data Button will NOT respond at all.
However if you enter the settings and manually switch to 2G it (data symbol) goes blank then makes an "X" then loads back up and stays with no issue.
Now this is not a service issue because if it was the Unit by default would goto 2G. But it does not. I can reproduce this issue after a Master Reset and soft reset.
I have replicated our APN setting correctly and input them in the correct manners in a single column and this does nothing.
I assume the device is having an issue with the hand off if 4G becomes unavailable and doesn't auto switch to 2G even if the setting requires it to. But I could be wrong as I am just guessing.
How many of you are experiencing this same random issue and how/when does it happen?
How many times daily?
I'm trying to gather info to goto my resources to have this looked at if it's not just me.
EDIT: I tried this---> *#*#4636#*#* and then press “Phone Information” > Toggle Ciphering to OFF > Turn off Radio > Turn on Radio > Toggle Ciphoring to ON.
Will update results after running it all today..Try it..Should work at first..I want to see is this is final fix or a bandage fix.
I have noticed that exact behavior a few times as well.. In my case, the only way to restore data was to reboot the handset.
Updated OP
Just got off the phone with TMO Support
I am experiencing the same issue, just started this morning, the fella at TMO suggested, and he said he checked it, that my sim is an older 2G sim, and that this issue has been popping up a bit in the last few months, he suggested, and I assume that he really didnt know what to do, that I go into a TMO store and have my SIM swapped out, he said, that the older 2G sim's cant handle the newer 3G speeds and kinda self destruct.
I've got a TMO store accross the St from here and as soon as they open I will go get a new SIM to try it..
I will post more after.
BTW: setting the phone to use GSM only will get edge working..
EDIT: Called TMO Back, the next guy walked me through a bunch of troubleshooting steps, and none of it helped, while he was typing up his trouble ticket, the 4G indicator came on and the phone is working properly now.. trouble ticket still went in.. My guess, network problems on T-Mobile.
I'm having this issue too... Sometimes I have 3 bars and no data connection at all. How do T-Mobile 3G cards differ from the 2G cards? Mine has no info on it, just numbers. Now, AT&T's 3G cards are clearly marked (I'm testing TMob service, planning to jump from AT&T).

I am not sure how T-Mobiles cards are identified, But I dont think its a problem with the SIM, most likely I had a newer support person on the phone who had no idea what he was talking about.
Seems to be working ok now with my "2G" sim in.
getting about 4Mb/sec down and almost 2 up.
Since switching from my N1 I have since....
1.Replaced the sim that came in the box
2.Had my data plan recoded to read android, to play nice with the towers
I think there was a third thing but I don't remember lol...but anyways I had this happen once where data stalled. The arrows weren't blinking and I had the 4g icon with full bars. I had to turn the radio off and on to reboot the radio. I am guessing it's a tmo issue as well because it hasn't happened since.
Had this issue from day 1. Have done every supposed fix offered. Nothing. TMo says its part of HTC's known issues with the device and it's a supposed to be addressed when they send out our update.

Nah bro...I actually work for T-Mo..lol
My SOC is cool...My manager changed it correctly when we activated. I had a MT4G before this and the SOC is the same.
SIM is the same that came with Mytouch 4G..again same newly shaped smaller gold conductive SIM that comes with the Sensation.
This isn't on our end at all...I think your issue was similar but not the same.
Ours is definitely software related....As the post before me stated, HTC says that the update should catch this issue as they are aware of it.
Crossing fingers.
We've had many posts about these issues already. We can SAFELY say that it has nothing to do with the SIM or the type of data plan you have. I and others have confirmed this. I am still using the old 2g SIM with no numbers on the old $20 Android plan. I've had incredible 4g coverage with no data issues. My speeds are usually 6-7 Mbps average and maxing out at around 10 Mbps.

I noticed that but I wasn't quite sure if they were honestly the EXACT same issue..So I was kinda hoping to simplify and explain it a tad bit more and go from there.
I had these issues 2. Cycling ciphering and mobile data off and on seems to have fixed issue for me. Will have to wait and see if an ota gets released.

Well it's back doing it...It's definitely NOT handing off correctly. So that method is not a perm fix.
Just got off the live chat..this is what happened. Clearly I omitted my last name..But here is the copy and paste. YES I copied what I wrote in the OP because it was perfectly phrased..plus i didn't feel like re explaining it.

So I am assuming they are out of Sensations. So there goes warranty exchanges guys.
Update:: So I went in the store today...I actually had to show my badge since they were so rude before. The other manager must have been off today. They exchanged no problem.
The new batch devices however all don't have the "curved glass" frame anymore. Seems responsive. My screen has a super minor curve around the edges. I assure it's NOTHING like the 1st one I had. I pray this one works because my 14 days is up Friday. Customer Care has no more Sensations to give out anymore so if you're calling in do NOT expect a Sensation and there is NOTHING comparable to it. So they won't do the exchange.
New SIM fixed my data issues, 4G all the time. - My data went from 4G sometimes at about 1.4mb to 4G all the time usually around 6-7mb
Your issue was different than this issue then. This issue is a software issue.
I have experienced the same issue as the OP in this thread.
I purchased the Sensation the day it was released and it functioned well for the first 3 days using the new SIM card but with my previous Even More Plus plan that I inherited through my Nexus One.
Later that week my phone was unable to access the internet using T-Mobile's network.
I tried fixing the phone by removing the battery for a couple of minutes
Cycling the Cipher lock several times
Manually Registering to T-Mobiles network
and more...
Phone calls and SMS worked but I was unable to receive any data. I then called T-Mobile asking if they had experienced any Data outages in my area and the representative said No. Then asked if I recently purchased the Sensation. She claimed that my issue was caused by a conflict in the Data plan that I had and I was forced to get the new 4G Data plan. (Just a marketing scam as my phone worked fine for 3 days and the same SIM works fine on my Nexus One)
Prior to making the phone call I noticed that my phone did not have an assigned IP address. Even after I manually registered the phone to T-Mobile's network.
A week later while at a concert I noticed that my phone experienced the same behaviour for no strange reason. Even when using the new "Data Plan" that T-Mobile recommended. The worst thing about it is that it drains your battery as it attempts to scan and register itself with T-Mobile.

Can you take a picture of this new Sensation. It would be a shame if we get ripped off weeks after the phone was released if they release a revised version of this phone.
I'm having a similar problem and will be stopping by a tmo store later this afternoon. My phone drops to 0 bars, stays like that for about 10 seconds, loses signal with an x on the bars, then 20 seconds later I get signal back. All the while I have 4G but cannot send/recieve data. This also happens every 5 mins or so. Reboot does no help, neither does a battery pull or toggling cypher/radio. I'm really starting to get annoyed and am lucky that I have an available WiFi network while at work. This is the second Sensation that ill be returning. The first wouldn't get ANY signal at all.

Constantly getting disconnected from Google servers on LTE

Is anyone else seeing this?
I have both the skyrocket and the Elevate 4G LTE hotspot device and both are showing the same issue: Google services can't keep a steady connection and it simply times out.
My Skyrocket is pure stock and i know that it is getting disconnected from google servers because i stop receiving google voice SMS, gtalk disconnects and i don't receive gmail emails. other apps that use data DON'T get disconnected.
It takes about 10 minutes from the moment i turn off the screen until the connection to google is dropped. the only way to get the connection back is to wake the device login to gtalk again.
Initially i thought it was the Skyrocket but i am having the same issue when i connect my Galaxy tab via the Elevate 4G hotsopt. same issue exactly.
This does not happen on my galaxy note (3G device) and does not happen over wifi.
It also doesn't happen when i tether other android devices to my Galaxy note.
it only happens on LTE devices and it is very annoying.
Is anyone else seeing this?
I guess i am the only one with this issue?
No one is using gtalk ant notice how you don't get messages when on LTE?
Bump!
Still seeing this issue constantly. Am I the only one constantly getting disconnected from Google servers on lte?
First. I hate you. Lol i want the note so bad. Second did you try calling at&t and tell them?. Mabye the can reset your data. I do not have this problem. When the skyrocket first came out lte was screwey, and everyone was changing there apn. But they fixed it after a week.
I keep seeing "unable to connect to server".....but didn't know what it was. Figured it was something to do with being rooted.

Yes it is not an issue with my phone or APN settings as i said it is also happening with their Elevate 4G LTE hotsopt.
I tried call AT&T again yesterday and it is like talking to the wall. they just don't understand what i want and they tell me to "call google as it is not our problem"...
I am surprised no one else is posting about this here except from the poster above me.
I'm experiencing the same issue on two LTE phones, the Vivid and the skyrocket Google talk randomly disconnects.

LTE in Sacramento? Didn't know ATT activated the NorCal central valley yet.
So it seems like this is CA related.
I tried to report this to at&t yet again, this time i spoke to one of their supervisors and he said he will run a few checks and get back to me.
Sac doesn't have LTE.... I was just responding to this thread because I'm getting the same disconnection.
I should of been more specific....I get disconnected throughout the day from the servers and I'm NOT on LTE....I assumed it was because of the ROM I'm using (alien 5). Hopefully someone figures it out....I myself know barely a thing about any of this, it's a miracle I was even able to root and flash lol.

But are you provisioned on an LTE plan? if you are and you are using APN called "PTA" then you will suffer from this even if you are not in an LTE coverage zone.
If you are using APN named "phone" and still suffering from this in a none LTE area then i don't think it is related to what i am talking about.
I just checked and my APN setting says "ATT pta". I assume this can be changes to "phone"?

I've seen this, too. I made a topic about it a few weeks back but no one else seemed to have the issue. I first thought it had something to do with the lack of the "colored" signal indicator new to 2.3 that indicates the GTalk connection. I too lose the connection randomly. I too have the LTE PTA, but am not on LTE...I live aobut 40 miles south of DC.
Is anyone else with this also using a Google Apps account? I wondered if that had anything to do with it. AT&T was also completely unhelpful for me.

Yes this is exactly what i am talking about.
Did you try to manually change your APN from PTA to "phone" (you need to create a new APN and set that phone to use that). See if this solved your problem?
I have the same issue! I'm located in new London CT. There is LTE for the Amtrak line that runs to NYC. My google services disconnects when I'm connected to LTE. I have to open gtalk to sign back in.
I have the problem in los angeles. But not google, my entire data drops in and out. Its super unreliable. I don't have the same issue in San Francisco on LTE. I'm wondering if its oversaturation of LTE in the area? My data when on LTE was so horrible the other day that using my phone to navigate to an unknown location was worthless. It would lose connection and recalculate so often that I was glad I knew kinda where I needed to be. Would have launched my phone into the street out of frustration if I didn't kinda know the area I was in.
My LTE speeds in San Francisco/San Jose are usually 30-60Mbps. In LA I never see over 15Mbps.

Yet Another Signal Issue

Hey everyone. So long story short, I took advantage of T-Mobile's offer to pay off my VZW contract, and purchased the Nexus 5. Now, from my extensive searches all over the internet, it is pretty apparent that this phone has a lot of signal issues. Mine, however, appears to be a bit different and I haven't really come across it yet. So this is what happens:
I have pretty good signal everywhere with T-Mobile. At home, however, it's not so great (but workable). Occasionally, I go into a spot where I lose signal. The problem is, that signal never comes back. Just today, I lost signal in my elevator. I went into the car, drove to a point where I ALWAYS have full LTE, and look at my phone: No Signal, Emergency calls only. I go into the phone status menu in the device settings, and according to the DBM, I have FULL signal (yet the top right corner indicates a little lack-of-signal triangle). The only way to "reconnect" to the network is to go to mobile network > network operators and to manually select T-Mobile after it searches for networks. Then, it reconnects to the network with full signal. Again, this isn't like the other network issues that people seem to be having, where they suddenly lose signal. My radio is fine. It transitions seamlessly between 3G and LTE. The problem, however, is that sometimes, after going into a low coverage area and losing signal, I can't get it back.
Has anybody ever had this issue? I don't think it's a hardware issue, because the phone is reporting that it is receiving signal in the status menu.
Here is an example:

I have tmobile as well and I haven't had this problem yet. It comes out of no signal fine and usually pretty quick. Can you still make calls or does it say "mobile network not available". I would go to a tmobile store when you can and ask them. Don't call, those people don't know anything.

Nope. I can't make calls or send texts until I manually reconnect to the network.

Thats really weird. I haven't heard that before either. I know this phone has a bunch of signal problems, but I haven't hear this as one of them. As I said, try going to a tmobile store. They might be able to help by giving you a new sim card or something. If that doesn't work, I would RMA the phone.
When you say "where I normally have a good LTE signal" what are you comparing that to? When you had vzw? Or another time with the same phone on tmo? Maybe tmo isn't good in your area and you're better off with vzw? Just a thought. I had vzw for 11 years and switched to tmo April 2013. Better than vzw in my area. My N5 has no signal issues that I'm aware of

I mean that, in that same exact area, when I manually reconnect to the T-Mobile network, I have full bars of blazing fast LTE. In that same exact spot, prior to manually reconnecting, the phone was telling me that I had no signal just seconds before. I'm referring to only T-Mobile, and only the Nexus 5.

This is a good idea. OP: you can do a little troubleshooting and then I'd advise going to a tmo store, explaining your issue, then maybe getting another one.

Have you tried disabling LTE and just run with 3G? Not permanently, but for testing purposes.
Sounds odd.. when i lose signal completely its in a no coverage area... makes sense right but when i step into coverage
it will lock back onto the network (EDGE) after 20 seconds or so and 10 more seconds should lock into the data (LTE/HSPA)

I haven't tried this yet, gonna do it today. I'm just really hoping it's a SIM card issue, I hate replacing phones. But if it has to be done, then so be it.

In my tmobile no issue He goning will pretty quick.
I enjoy the 3g...
I have the same issue. The phone just came from my service center which didn't acknowledge the problem. I'm at a loss as to what to do next since they don't want to replace it under warranty (they say that the phone is fine).

The problem is that, as long as you have strong service and don't lose signal, the problem is impossible to replicate. That's probably what your service center saw. I downloaded an app today to help monitor how long it takes to regain signal. If the data adds up, I plan to use it.

The problem occurs even when my phone is standing still. I have it on my desk where it has a five bar reception 24/7. I never moved it at that time and it still failed on me. I even tried a different SIM with same results.
I have another question for everyone with the T-Mobile network. When I am at home, I have pretty weak signal. It is usually HSPA or, sometimes, HSPA+. However, when I try to switch to 2G in preferred network types, I cannot get any signal whatsoever. How is it possible that my phone can have 3G but cannot connect to 2G?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Signal Issue
I had the same issue. I have great LTE signal at home. When I get to work it's 3G. The phone transitions from LTE to 3G ok. When I go into the middle of the building I loose the signal completely. When I go back outside the phone never reacquires 3G. I was able to duplicate this several times.
I did a factory reset which didn't work. I called T-Mobile support. They were no help. I went into T-Mobile store and asked if they would swap out the SIM. Bingo.
New SIM card solved my problem.

[Q] Tried to Setup Spark - Now No LTE At All

Got my new Play Store N5 this week and got it all setup rooted and ROM'd, but I realized yesterday that I wasn't setup correctly to use Sprint's tri-band LTE Spark. It had been connecting to LTE fine on one band, but I wanted to see if the extra two would help increase speeds and maybe some coverage, so I followed a guide I found on here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/sprint-tri-band-activation-help-t2515798
Now my phone won't connect to LTE at all. I've called Sprint and even stopped in at one of their repairs stores, but I can't stand being asked to restart my phone or hit update profile again after about 20 times already. One of the techs even said I need to get a new phone!
Can anyone help with this? Would reflashing the stock image help at all? Was the tech right, do I really need a new phone?

They may be by flashing stock images, but not by just resetting or flashing another ROM.

I've tried reverting them to no avail, plus they seem to change whenever I update my profile/PRL. But if you could post what you have them set to (especially if you are using Spark) that would be fantastic.

How does Sprint roll out updates for the N5? Is it just through profile updates? Buying from the Play Store, I will never receive an OTA from Sprint, right?

To be honest I'm not sure of the "how" of it. I just read an article, a little while back, saying they were going to do an update to activate spark on their devices.
Edit: And you shouldn't have an issue receiving it since you're connected to Sprint service.

Sprint submits the changes they want to Google and Google incorporates it into their Android updates. LG and Sprint had long ago fixed whatever their issue was with the Spark update rolled out for the LG G2 in late jan/early feb so it's mainly up to Google now to push the update.
As the Nexus 5 is not native to Sprint and is basically the phone for the entire North American region, Google will not push an update just for one specific carrier. Thus we Nexus 5 users on Sprint have waited over 5 months for the next Google Android update which will enable B26/ B41 (aka Spark).
p.s. Availability of band 25 PCS 1900 LTE tends to screw with non Spark updated phones.
I followed the steps in the post linked in the first reply (used Method 2, Method 1 kept failing fastboot halfway through) and reset my phone back to stock. But it still doesn't want to connect to Sprint's LTE. I even played around with the LTE radio settings again in the hope of enabling Spark and nada.
Would it have been possible to corrupt the phone software totally while doing this to begin with? Do I need to send it back? (and on that note, you have no idea how frustrating it is to explain to a Sprint rep on the phone that you bought the phone from Google online. Such a foreign concept to them!) Could the SIM card have gotten corrupted and I just need a new one of those?

Update: So after downloading the necessary files to my laptop at work, I followed the procedures to reflash to stock again this morning. It came up as failed activation at first, but after hitting update profile and rebooting the phone, I'm back on LTE again. And after checking Android Central this morning, it seems like I should just wait for Google to fix my Spark issues...

So tempted to roll back into the Sprint store that told me I needed a new phone and shove my LTE-enabled phone in their faces.

No Data with Custom Rom

Hello. So I purchased the Photon Q and have it activated, yes, all the basics. Anyway, when I flash a cyanogenmod rom, I lose my data. Is this an issue with other photon q users? or just me? Data works perfect under the stock 4.1.2 rom, but not under cm. I'm running TWRP recovery, and yes, I'm rooted.
I assume you're on Sprint? Have you checked the APN list? (Although I didn't need to do anything to get the latest to work with data, it "just worked").
Are you using the latest version of CM as well, the 'jbbl' editions?
On cm data problems always happen. It's not that stable for CDMA users = =

Hm, been solid here. I've tested it in all sorts of conditions too - I was out to sea (but somewhat close to land) and getting a lot of roaming connections... I was even able to squeeze data out of those connections.
LTE works when I'm in cities, although I do get dropped to 3g quite a bit - I'm not sure if that's an issue with Sprint's LTE penetrating buildings or what. But I can't say that having a custom ROM has affected my data negatively - now you are on a m7, which I know those devices have moved between unified and not unified... Our unified devices, at least on my Photon Q's, has been great - no issues that I could attribute directly to software, other than maybe some weak wifi reception (like in airports) which could again be the device itself.

Sorry, I clean flashed the last time that I installed it. I don't have any logs, because I haven't thought to take any. I haven't checked the APN list because Since the phone is CDMA, I didn't know where to look. I will flash again and give it all another try.

By "unactivate", i mean literally replace it with another phone, then re-activate it. The phone connects on Sprint's towers, however i use Kroger's i-wireless. So reactivation and phone swticthing is fairly easy.
At the moment, i am running cm11 nightly, and it appears to be working alright with data for now.

Look at your network mode. There's no "LTE", so of course you'll never see 4g as the Q is not capable of WiMax - LTE is the only "4g" network you'd see.

Okay, So I've tried LTE/CDMA (auto) after discovering that it DOESN'T USE GSM, but any option that has LTE in it doesn't seem to work. Wait, what? Why are you using ancient builds...
You need to use the jbbl edition. The xt897/c builds are ancient and should not be used - it was when we needed separate builds for CDMA and GSM.
If you're on Sprint, you are correct - there's no GSM. The chip in the phone is only used for international roaming, if you have it enabled.

You're still on CM11? The apns-conf file CM provides should work fine.
You can try a third party app like chomp SMS, but if you're hacking up APN's/apns-conf it's not surprising that you broke MMS.
