Discuss all thing Galaxy S8/S8+ root - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Here you go guys/gals. A thread where you can discuss anything you want concerning the S8 root or anything really! Yayyyyyy!
Two threads have been closed regarding root because of fellow members speaking out of topic.
Enjoy and be civilized!

Still waiting for US S8+ Snapdragon rooted with system R/W ENG ROM to be posted. Exynos S8/S8+ owners are fortunate that Samsung doesn't lock stuff down as tight as Qualcomm!

Will this method root my Moto Z Force 2 when it launches? /s

No

I have an idea. Why don't we put a nice little nifty first things to do when you get root list together?
Debloating, tweaking, themes, etc.
Personally I'm excited for the camera mods we will be able to perform now.

Sweet

Wanting to keep OTA updates off my phone, but as I mentioned in a previous thread, when I tried to run AdHell, it wanted to use the Samsung FIrewall, which seems to want to update knox, so I've avoided it for now... I've heard other say to use "package disabler," but I see a couple different versions (e.g. Package Disabler Pro by PoliceDeveloper, BK Package Disabler by WakaSoftware.com, etc), so wasn't sure exactly which one was recommended. Another option I was thinking of would be maybe to just use ADB, as I think I could probably disable the 2-4 update packages that way as well. Thoughts anyone?

No, this won't. This thread is for the Galaxy S8/S8+. I'm sure there is a thread for the Moto Z Force 2. Though I don't think the phone is even released yet and so it will probably be a while before root is achieved.

Samsung already has done a magnificent job with the camera.... What camera mods have there been for previous galaxy devices?

I think any package disabler will work... I use the BK one though and adhell....
Sorry to beat a dead horse with the 80% but....... Do all eng firmwares have this 80 percent limit

Is it still trolling when the OP says anything goes? I have been told that my humor is a little dry but damn. I thought that one was an obvious joke.

Lmao no not at all bro....it's just that it was funny to see that question in an S8 thread. Eitherway no shade, I replied with what I knew regarding the Force 2.

Yeah I've got to say with the locked bootloader and all this bloat, my initial impression is not that great, unfortunately. Day to day use, the phone is not as fast as my GS3 running slim bean.
Screen and hardware are fabulous, but they really effed up the software this time around. Just went wayyyyyyy overboard. And locked bootloader? Come on now

Bloatware, in and of itself, is a justification for unlocking a devices bootloader and installing a custom rom. How much space is wasted?

I don't know. Maybe I'm missing something, but if you are going to disable all that Samsung software whats the point in getting an S4? It seems their software was the big upgrade this time around and the hardware less so.
It's more of a matter of form on AT&T's and Samsung's part.

I don't think Com2UsPoker, Adapt Sound, At&T Family Maps, ChoKUKor, YPmobile,TripAdvisor, BlurbCheckout, Match3VS, or most any software displayed in the screenshots are particularly unique to the GS4. I'm sure most of us will not lament the absence of the majority of the displayed list of applications. All in all, it's a rather rude of Samsung and AT&T to put all of that clearly invaluable software on a $700 phone, then make it uninstallable.

That bloatware is what is causing the lag online reviewers have been mentioning. If you disable/remove it, the phone will have no lag at all.
I'm hopeful to see some AOSP-based ROMS so I can remove the bloat known as TouchWIZ.

Being the best is debatable. Nevertheless if you want a pure stock experience, then you might as well get a Nexus 5 when it comes out. It will be unlocked, cheaper, and probably have better specs.

The new LG G3 allows customers to uninstall bloatware WITHOUT root!

If we pester Samsung on their Facebook page, do you think they will push out an update to let us do the same? There's so much crap on our phones that I wish I could uninstall.
I find it highly unlikely Samsung would allow such thing.

The LG G3 AndroidCentral has for review is the Korean version and it is an early prototype.
Recently a law was passed in Korea which makes all bloatware pre-installed on a phone un-installable. This law is obeyed by all phone companies in Korea.
Since other countries have not taken such action against unwanted apps on phones, it is highly unlikely that Samsung or any other company will make bolatware removable in a future update.
They knocked back Kitkat for the S3 due to the bloatware in the rom needing too much RAM....I don't think they are gonna worry about people wanting to remove the bloatware, what they give you stays... Even if it means they won't update a Star phone...

Edit: Okay, so apparently the Korean S5 can remove some bloat.. but by the next iterations it should be happening :L

But the best option is to allow for the software to be uninstallable.
For those who want a phone and don't delve as deep into tech as the majority of users on these forums, all the in-built software is more than enough for them. For those who want more customisations, then we get the choice of uninstalling the programs.
Best of both worlds really, plus it's not forcing us to use their crap. Heck, we're still using their phones at least!
If the LG G3 released here in HK is 32GB/3GB then I'm gonna swap my Note 3 straight away.

Is root hopeless?

First off, I'm totally new to these forums and I'm not sure if I'm doing this right.
Anyway, I just got my S6 2 days ago and I stupidly downloaded the latest update without checking if root was possible. I'm on AOF1. Is there any possibility for downgrading / rooting in the future?
Thanks

Can you tell me what the lottery numbers are next week? Can anyone? No one on this site AFAIK can predict or see into the future. No one has any idea if someone has an exploit that they are working on or even finishing up. Kingroot 4.1 just popped up out of the blue and is allowing some Verizon devices on 5.01 ro be rooted...no one knew the day before it was released. It is ludicrous to say anything is impossible and will never happen in the phone world.

Root on S8?

You guys think the S8 will get root?
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
Probably only exynos and after sometime maybe the sd835 version
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought dirty cow made all phones easier to root? I have to have Arise.
I did read they had locked the bootloader so rooting and custom roms would be a problem. But that might only be for the snapdragon ones. I will need to find out what the situation is because if I can't get my custom roms on it and have things like xposed then I'm simply not interested in it. Luckily I'm in the UK so maybe the exynos version will be ok.
I am also wondering whether the S8 and S8+ use the same bootloader? If they do then the phones are effectively identical in terms of hardware AND software and roms should work on either device?
Although with the price, the crappy battery, and the dishonest way they have seemingly put out battery life numbers which are based on running it at 1080 and NOT its native 1440, simply so they can get a similar comparison to the S7 (which WAS running at 1440), I am wondering whether I should even bother. Although I am not sure what else there is out there. Pixel is too expensive considering it uses an old chipset, the G6 is a bit on the weak side with the chipset again, I havent really looked at the Sony but I'm not really a fan of Sony in general.

I'm guessing that once the devices are released we'll have more options, however, if the devices aren't out yet, how does this purport to work?
As a Verizon user I've learned to not even ask about root or look forward to it. And you know what. I'm ok with that.
Without unlocked bootloader, root and ready to install custom AOSP Rom with xposed, I do not need a new phone.
At that point there are absolutely no reasons to downgrade my Nexus 6.
I really like the features that offer Galaxy s8 plus but software is over 60% of any device.

I agree, as devices and the OS get polished more and more over the iterations, there is less realistic every-day need to root each time.
That said, and like most of Android power users (xda?), I miss deep customizations like those on top of Xposed, plus one key tool that I have gotten used to live with: GMD GestureControl (control the system via finger gestures)... Plus Titanium Backup as well
I'm sure someone will leak a eng.kernel for the US SD835 models, that's has happened with the S7 and S7e. That will allow root for us, takes a little more work to get it running good as the eng.kernels are just meant for development and unlocking devices so the kernel CPU settings are all messed up.

To all the people who are talking about Xposed here: you do realize that Xposed for nougat isn't out yet right? And those devices ship with nougat so unless someone makes a marshmallow rom you aren't going to have xposed.
That may be a deal breaker, but it's not Samsung's fault.

There are no custom roms for the S7 USA variants. It's not possible with a locked bootloader. We only have a few modified stock roms. I'm currently rooted and waiting for Xposed so I can finally have some decent performance and battery life.

Thanks for the info. Im just trying to decide if I should keep my LG V20 or switch to the S7. Is the lag & battery as bad as many are complaining?

Only with root, stock is fine. If you do want the S7 with roms and kernels just get international because I feel the us is not worth it.

I'm on an unlocked G930T on AT&T on Nougat and really have not found a reason strong enough to go through the rooting process. The only thing that pushes my buttons is that I can't use TB and can't kill some of the old TMO apps completely. But the phone is speedy, gets me through the day without a charge, and has resources available. I've got a theme I like and have most things white on dark which I like better.
So until root becomes extremely easy and reliable, I'm okay with what I've got.
Hi I'm also on an unlocked version of TMobile using ATT. Are you doing anything specific for better battery life? I went to sleep at 100% and woke up with 87%. I have disable those that can be, I'm on Nougat as well and haven't installed too many apps yet.

Not really, just disabled everything I'm not using. And I use the device maintenance to optimize and clear memory every now and then. And I try not to leave the screen on, etc. The usual stuff. I get a day with no issues. I bought some extra wireless fast chargers on eBay and use them if necessary but really feel like I wasted my money because I just set it on the charger at night and it normally goes all day. But I'm not a real heavy phone user. That's part of it.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Buy Package Disabler Pro and disable all of the bloatware that comes with stock plus any other apps you feel like, my phone is flawless...
The only thing I miss about being rooted is Viper4Android, wish I could have that on stock.

Packaged Disabler Pro will stop system apps without root? How does it do that?

I have no idea how, but it totally does.. It color coordinates system apps, user added apps and even known bloatware apps, making it easy to decide what to stop.
It's designed specifically for Samsung phones, and is the first app I install since I don't have root anymore.
Worth every penny.
Well from TMo you can get s7 edge for $480 or the flat s7 for $560? On the edge, they have fixed the palm rejection at lease on the coral blue.

Where are all the custom roms at? I only see 2 in the rom thread. Are the S7 & S7edge roms compatible?
Thanks..

Well that's weird. I bought it, tried to install it, and it says I'm rooted or there's some other issue and won't install. Obviously I'm not rooted so I don't know what's up.
After reading some of the later reviews there are many others with the same issue. I'm emailing them to see if there is any resolution.
You might want to try your app to see if it's still working correctly.

Totally jinxed me..
I haven't opened the app in months because, why? It just works..
As soon as I open it to check, the license check failed and all my frozen apps reappeared.
Now I can't get it to reactivate, it seems many people are having this problem since the upgrade to Nougat.
SUCKS... Why did I help you hahahahaha.. really though, it sucks. Hopefully they fix it, I'll leave Samsung if not.
I did find this in another thread.. Try it out.
There's a link on the 4th post, it works and I'll use that until the current version of Package Disabler Pro is fixed or updated.

I emailed them the evening I tried to install it and they sent a couple of suggestions. None of them worked so I let them know. They sent another email a couple of hours later and said "try it again" and this time is did work. So they fixed something.
Anyway, thanks. And sorry for jinxing you! But it's not all bad news. I ran your Thanks count up to double digits!
FWIW, I'm a long-time user of BK Package Disabler Pro. For me, it continued working both during the Nougat beta period and since installation of the final version.

Strange. I wonder why it quit working for so many people. They need to fix it for everybody though because their rating on play store is going down quickly.
