Root on S8? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

You guys think the S8 will get root?
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk

Probably only exynos and after sometime maybe the sd835 version
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I thought dirty cow made all phones easier to root? I have to have Arise.

I did read they had locked the bootloader so rooting and custom roms would be a problem. But that might only be for the snapdragon ones. I will need to find out what the situation is because if I can't get my custom roms on it and have things like xposed then I'm simply not interested in it. Luckily I'm in the UK so maybe the exynos version will be ok.
I am also wondering whether the S8 and S8+ use the same bootloader? If they do then the phones are effectively identical in terms of hardware AND software and roms should work on either device?
Although with the price, the crappy battery, and the dishonest way they have seemingly put out battery life numbers which are based on running it at 1080 and NOT its native 1440, simply so they can get a similar comparison to the S7 (which WAS running at 1440), I am wondering whether I should even bother. Although I am not sure what else there is out there. Pixel is too expensive considering it uses an old chipset, the G6 is a bit on the weak side with the chipset again, I havent really looked at the Sony but I'm not really a fan of Sony in general.

@ewokuk
hey bro the pre order on samsung UK website is the exynos one right?

europe is only getting exynos so it must be

I'm guessing that once the devices are released we'll have more options, however, if the devices aren't out yet, how does this purport to work?

As a Verizon user I've learned to not even ask about root or look forward to it. And you know what. I'm ok with that.

Without unlocked bootloader, root and ready to install custom AOSP Rom with xposed, I do not need a new phone.
At that point there are absolutely no reasons to downgrade my Nexus 6.
I really like the features that offer Galaxy s8 plus but software is over 60% of any device.

There really doesnt seem to be that much to miss. Titanium, and a few customized menus. Not that big.

I agree, as devices and the OS get polished more and more over the iterations, there is less realistic every-day need to root each time.
That said, and like most of Android power users (xda?), I miss deep customizations like those on top of Xposed, plus one key tool that I have gotten used to live with: GMD GestureControl (control the system via finger gestures)... Plus Titanium Backup as well

I'm sure someone will leak a eng.kernel for the US SD835 models, that's has happened with the S7 and S7e. That will allow root for us, takes a little more work to get it running good as the eng.kernels are just meant for development and unlocking devices so the kernel CPU settings are all messed up.

Then we will be "stuck" on the "cracked" firmware until another fix is found. Root/bootloader unlock is NOT going to happen with this device.

They are out of the box yes but you can adb super user and scripts to fix that. We actually running great on the tmo S7 edge. I'm getting same as stock battery life if not better and performance is like stock if not better. Took alot of work/trial and error though.

To all the people who are talking about Xposed here: you do realize that Xposed for nougat isn't out yet right? And those devices ship with nougat so unless someone makes a marshmallow rom you aren't going to have xposed.
That may be a deal breaker, but it's not Samsung's fault.

It is clearly understood that xposed does not exist on M(..yet) just as it is clearly understood that even if xposed did exist on N it would still not exisit on a phone with a unlockable boot looader... which is Samsungs/fault. See how that works?:silly:

Should I give up my dream of rooting and just update to 5.1.1?

This guy got me all excited like some big rooting exploit was found :crying:. Since being dumb and updating my phone in mid-summer to 5.0.2, I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for a chance to root my phone. Unfortunately, Verizon ignores the FCC's ruling that they can't disallow the user from doing what they want with their device. Should I keep waiting for someone to find an exploit or should I just give up my dream?
Here's my phone stats just in case someone knows of a way:
Model: SM-G920V
Version: 5.0.2
Kernel Version: 3.10.61
Build ID: LRX22G.G920VVRU2AOF1
Just update your missing out on wifi calling this phone won't be rooted
Does Marshmallow give us a chance?
Taking a different angle, is there a greater or lesser chance of having our phone rooted once Marshmallow is available? Will the newer OS introduce exploits that can affect root? Thanks for any insight you smarter folks can provide
I personally updated to 5.1.1 in the last 4 months, but in all honesty I didn't really utilize root very much, it was more of a play thing for me. I was rooted on all my previous devices though in the last 5 years, so it's not super easy for me to simply drop root on a whim.
I know some people use tethering as they still have unlimited data, which my buddy has a unrooted device and uses FoxFi for, which still works unrooted.
I have to say though that 5.1.1 runs much better than any of the previous rooted roms. I really like the wifi calling because the signal in my apartment isn't too hot (1 bar of 4G) and thus the phone doesn't eat battery at home like it used to. The OS feels a lot more responsive (though the sluggishness is not fully fixed it's much better) and overall it's just a better experience at the moment.
If you need to turn off apps you still can for the most part. There aren't too many you can't disable.
Who knows, maybe once we get Marshmallow there will be a new hole and then we can have the best of both worlds. Here's to hoping.

It will likely be harder to root. There have been significant changes to 6.0.* to improve "security". I wouldn't really expect root on this device to be widely available.

WiFi calling allows you much clearer calling than normal calls. Even more so when talking to another Verizon customer with the same feature. You don't get locked into bad cell towers (like the places I go) and allows you to VPN where needed - even your calls. It seems like a level more of privacy but it might be that "V" might be listening (ala Microsoft Skype). Don't know about that one.
The upgrades also allow you to video chat with another Verizon customer but it works exceptionally poorly and consumes loads of bandwidth that some networks (and 4G/LTE networks) can't handle.
If we don't have an unlocked bootloader by the time 6.0 rolls out I'll probably just flash that and deal with not being rooted.

You're conflating wifi calling (just the ability to call over wifi - which is not available on 5.02) with HD Voice/Video aka Advanced Calling (which is higher quality voice over LTE, which is available on 5.02). Personally, I've seen 0 instances of having voice over wifi kick in except for the time I forced it on by connecting wifi while having the phone in airplane mode. I have a feeling Verizon doesn't activate it unless there's absolutely zero 4g coverage.
So, I just downloaded the latest king root and it looks as though it worked. Installed root checker and titanium Backup. Everything working as expected. Can anyone confirm, or maybe explain to me how this is too good you be true?

Read those threads carefully, as any custom ROM and root method only works on older Verizon S6, phones that updated cant be rooted or install ROMs. I believe the cutoff was OE2, but i have taken all updates so i quit keeping track, so check other threads to find out for sure.

Don't worry. I was pretty pissed off because I accidentally pressed "Install Now" on my phone even though I was intentionally trying to press Messages on my phone, and my phone became unrootable. I'm just waiting if theres any rooted roms available as staying with OG7

root access to S8 or S8+

does any know if s8 or s8+ can be rooted?
are there plans to do this or does samsung now block this?

Won't be a method until it's released, then I'm certain the devs here will start cracking on it. Give time, the guys here are pretty good at what they do but there's still no guarantee root will be achieved (US models that is).

Root will happen
(If not I'll be suprised)
Look at s7 edge (exynos) if you want to have the approximate method.
Once twrp is released, I bet around the beginning of Mai, you will be able to install it using Odin (breaks knox, s pay, etc)
From there you'll be able to flash whatever you want (magisk, SuperSU, etc)
Edit:
Although I just stumbled over this:
Quote:
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11149/...-8895-soc-10nm
yeah, saw on their website that encryption layers are going to be a lot stronger. I still think it'll be cracked. It's a large enough phone. just might take longer than normal.
Even root on Verizon's locked bootloader?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yea root not enough for me, also need unlocked bootloader
geez the phones not even out yet. Gotta give the devs time to get there hands on the phone, then time to actually find a way to root it.
Would it be wise to right off the bat unenable automatic downloads of "Security Update: Improves Performance and Battery" in case someone finds a way to Root and they slip in an irreversible Firmware Update?
I bought this phone knowing it's going to be at least a year before at minimum root being achieved
if at all ,so I'm not getting my hopes up at all
This phone might be the straw the breaks the developers backs
I only needed a rooted phone for ARU unchained anyway ,but since the area51 got it to work unrooted
I can afford to wait

I hear you, preference I guess, I just like being up to date. I find that sometimes you are unable to use certain features without the updates.
I have the note 4 myself, and the only update that was a problem with that phone was MM, you could not downgrade from it. I have the AT&T variant so, no root access, and the current temp root that they have listed on the forums is not viable because your only temp rooted on experimental testing firmware.
The main feature you'll be missing out on is Bixby most likely, idk how good it will be or how bad, but you'll be behind that, apparently Bixby is not finished yet, and will not be shipped with the phone, at least not the complete version.

Haha, Buzby (as I call it) is the one INTRUSION I do NOT want!! Never asked for it, just forced upon us. This would be great, but I suspect the Phone already has Bixby embedded into it, what with all the hype (publicity for it) about it not functioning at launch I believe is a marketing ploy to bring attention to it. The part that is not being made available at launch is their end, nothing to do with needing an update for it to work (for those who blindly want it).
See, you watch, they will make such a big deal, like a major announcement when it is made to function and they "switch on their Bixby servers" it'll be posted all over the web like when the Note 7 fiasco (supposedly) happened.
Stop for second. And think. THINK. For yourself. That right there is invaluable advice. Bixby is not your friend.

There are no custom roms for the S7 USA variants. It's not possible with a locked bootloader. We only have a few modified stock roms. I'm currently rooted and waiting for Xposed so I can finally have some decent performance and battery life.

I'm on an unlocked G930T on AT&T on Nougat and really have not found a reason strong enough to go through the rooting process. The only thing that pushes my buttons is that I can't use TB and can't kill some of the old TMO apps completely. But the phone is speedy, gets me through the day without a charge, and has resources available. I've got a theme I like and have most things white on dark which I like better.
So until root becomes extremely easy and reliable, I'm okay with what I've got.
Hi I'm also on an unlocked version of TMobile using ATT. Are you doing anything specific for better battery life? I went to sleep at 100% and woke up with 87%. I have disable those that can be, I'm on Nougat as well and haven't installed too many apps yet.

Not really, just disabled everything I'm not using. And I use the device maintenance to optimize and clear memory every now and then. And I try not to leave the screen on, etc. The usual stuff. I get a day with no issues. I bought some extra wireless fast chargers on eBay and use them if necessary but really feel like I wasted my money because I just set it on the charger at night and it normally goes all day. But I'm not a real heavy phone user. That's part of it.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have no idea how, but it totally does.. It color coordinates system apps, user added apps and even known bloatware apps, making it easy to decide what to stop.
It's designed specifically for Samsung phones, and is the first app I install since I don't have root anymore.
Worth every penny.
Well from TMo you can get s7 edge for $480 or the flat s7 for $560? On the edge, they have fixed the palm rejection at lease on the coral blue.

Well that's weird. I bought it, tried to install it, and it says I'm rooted or there's some other issue and won't install. Obviously I'm not rooted so I don't know what's up.
After reading some of the later reviews there are many others with the same issue. I'm emailing them to see if there is any resolution.
You might want to try your app to see if it's still working correctly.

I haven't opened the app in months because, why? It just works..

FWIW, I'm a long-time user of BK Package Disabler Pro. For me, it continued working both during the Nougat beta period and since installation of the final version.

Strange. I wonder why it quit working for so many people. They need to fix it for everybody though because their rating on play store is going down quickly.

Discuss all thing Galaxy S8/S8+ root

Here you go guys/gals. A thread where you can discuss anything you want concerning the S8 root or anything really! Yayyyyyy!
Two threads have been closed regarding root because of fellow members speaking out of topic.
Enjoy and be civilized!
Still waiting for US S8+ Snapdragon rooted with system R/W ENG ROM to be posted. Exynos S8/S8+ owners are fortunate that Samsung doesn't lock stuff down as tight as Qualcomm!
Will this method root my Moto Z Force 2 when it launches? /s

No
I have an idea. Why don't we put a nice little nifty first things to do when you get root list together?
Debloating, tweaking, themes, etc.
Personally I'm excited for the camera mods we will be able to perform now.
Sweet
Wanting to keep OTA updates off my phone, but as I mentioned in a previous thread, when I tried to run AdHell, it wanted to use the Samsung FIrewall, which seems to want to update knox, so I've avoided it for now... I've heard other say to use "package disabler," but I see a couple different versions (e.g. Package Disabler Pro by PoliceDeveloper, BK Package Disabler by WakaSoftware.com, etc), so wasn't sure exactly which one was recommended. Another option I was thinking of would be maybe to just use ADB, as I think I could probably disable the 2-4 update packages that way as well. Thoughts anyone?

No, this won't. This thread is for the Galaxy S8/S8+. I'm sure there is a thread for the Moto Z Force 2. Though I don't think the phone is even released yet and so it will probably be a while before root is achieved.

Sorry to beat a dead horse with the 80% but....... Do all eng firmwares have this 80 percent limit

No need to apologize as I said we can speak of all things regarding the S8 root.
I personally have a battery case for my S8, invest in one its pretty darn great. It only cost me $30

Lol I know, I'm sure he/She was trolling though.
How much bigger is the note 8 compared to s8+

Is it still trolling when the OP says anything goes? I have been told that my humor is a little dry but damn. I thought that one was an obvious joke.
Was just a little giggle on my end while I wait for the actual 950U root release.
Lmao no not at all bro....it's just that it was funny to see that question in an S8 thread. Eitherway no shade, I replied with what I knew regarding the Force 2.

NEWS! OFFICIAL: V20 will be updated to Android P!!!

I found these amazing news.
Totally unexpected.
But we all know how LG behaves, so you shouldn't probably hold your breath, there will probably be a lot of delays. But who knows...

I have found something here.
https://www.phonearena.com/news/LG-G7-V40-Android-Pie-update_id112865
third quarter 2019
double post sorry
Yes !!!! I'm pretty excited, but for anyone not in Korea I don't think it'll be coming till 2020, since Carriers will take as long as they want, in implementing their own stuff or Pie will be only for Korea, unless a Rep for America confirms this.

Meh...
I thought the phone was just put on the EOL list.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Ok...well with them changing there mind...this just makes me wonder. I have two other Ls997's on ZVD and was wondering if it is even worth hoping for a root option one day or if I should just push the updates on em. Or if there is a magical option that is able to be tested on one of them for root access? It has been awhile is another reason of why I ask. I just don't want to keep waiting for nothing in other words.

Pretty much development is over for the V20 the devs who worked on unlocking the bootloader, gaining root, have all moved on. I'd say it's probably safe to say that root for the LS997 on later security patches isn't going to happen.

IF it even ACTUALLY happens, I suspect it'll only be for the Korean variants of the older phones, including the V20.
As it stands, the V20 is still listed as EOL alongside the G5 on their official security page.
If it comes to the Korean variants only, then it honestly wouldn't surprise me. LG has a track record of giving a certain degree of exclusivity to their Korean variants on both the hardware and software side.
I couldn't really care less though, tbh. By Q3 of this year LOS 16.x will be stable and that's STILL going to be a better experience than anything we've ever seen on the stock side from LG.
I'm also left wondering why the previous-gen devices like the V35 are scheduled to get it before the V40, for example. There could be a reason for it, but from where I sit it seems simply odd.
Or, maybe I'll be totally wrong and this is that elusive "software centre" they announced a while back finally coming to fruition.
IMO, at the moment, this thread (and especially its title) is misleading at best.

Apart from one of the most important ones, emdroidle (responsible for bringing DirtySanta to the H990/DS) who recently became active on XDA again.
He's also be fairly active behind the scenes on the LOS Gerrit.
None of the devs that were active when I started using LineageOS about a year ago now have left as far as I'm aware.
We (almost) just got LOS 16.x, and we've already gained the unlocked bootloader and root, there's no need for ongoing support in order to maintain those.

The article did not quantify just the Korean variants, so there's hope for all the variants, and disagree in reference to Los being a better experience than stock, too many things are broken in Los.
