New update today. When it finished and it restarted, The boot animation is now diff. The clouds come up and the Thunderbolt Logo forms, but now it stays and doesn't unform itself. Looks a lot Nicer.
On top of that there is some new VZW Data Widget.
Welcome to the future.
We've been waiting for you.

lol...So is this because I got the update late? or because I'm not rooted?
My new boot screen is sick, it says something about das BAMF...oh wait...lol. You might like the custom ROM loading screens over Verizon's...

technically you didnt have to root do get the fancy bootscreen the OP is talking about in advance. The OTA leak for unrooted users was out over a week or so ago at least as well (longer if you count the MR2 leaks that were canned).

This is the situation to which I was referring. "Oh wow, my bootscreen changed" is so July 9th.
I don't mean to be snide. It's just mildly entertaining.
ANd WTF is with these political sponsorship ads getting invasive all over this site? The Republicans had no problem writing blank checks and deficit spending for ten years. Why get their panties all in a twist now, just because we have a brown President? I say, keep tech sites tech.

What ads? I dont see them
(I have the adservers added in my hosts file, it's far easier than complaining). I would normally show the ads for sites I support, but when they get to be too much, I can't deal with it. I had to sadly do same thing when Stack Overflow a while ago when they wouldn't do anything about the obviously targeted and over saturated Microsoft ads they had everywhere. It was so bad you could search for "gnu linux opensource" and it would still bomb you with microsoft bs.
Sometime after November 2012, I'll unblock them again . I would post the adserver names, but the powers that be might not like that. However, it's not hard to right click -> view source and find things.
I don't think xda controls their own adservers and thus, does not control the ad content (google/doubleclick ads and maybe some other, cant remember). That's slightly different than stack overflow, where they did control it, so one could say xda is slightly less at fault.

It's a gradual rollout, not everyone gets it at the same time. And if she thinks the Tbolt is a POS, maybe she should exchange it for an iphone or blackberry. Or you could root it for her and slap a custom rom & kernel on it, and you wouldn't hear her ***** & moan about it anymore

Or you could quit waiting on verizon and just put the signed OTA from verizon on yourself. It would take like a few minutes of finding the post in the developers forum and then a few more to flash it in the bootloader.
Being on xda and waiting for an ota from verizon when the same signed ota that would work for non rooted phones is on here = sad panda
there's no way a hour's worth of reading (if you really cant figure it out) is worse than hearing her complain
I offered to root it for her, but she didn't want me to. To each their own lol. Well, tbh, the 5-6 reboots per day, plus the extreme lagginess at times just really make her mad seeing as how she paid $250 for it and its her first android phone. I can understand her anger at it, especially since whenever we talk to Verizon they just throw up their hands and say they can't do anything about, thanks for your 250 bucks.

The full RUU for upcoming Thunderbolt OTA update has been released thanks to Jcase/TeamAndIRC and Android Police. This is a Froyo release, hopefully the last one. This is for non-rooted users and will wipe all of your data. It is highly recommended that you do not flash over a rooted phone. Hold out for Jcase to release the rooted version soon. I have it available to download off my http server below and you can see the original sources below. Didn't see anyone start a thread for this yet.

Because it is stock android, which means no BS and for most people that is enough.
@elias, the only option you have if you want ICS and don't want to root is to wait for the official OTA which should be rolling out soon. Once you have ICS from the OTA you won't be able to roll back to GB without rooting (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this one)

I think that has very little to do with being a power user. NeXus phones have always been developer based phones made to mod, root, and hack. People that buy these phones, for the most part, buy them because of that and not because they want a vanilla android experience. Of course there are roms out that can get you close to that but I would venture to guess that if you took a pole of neXus users 99% of them want a custom experience, not a vanilla one. So for me to ask why someone would buy a Nexus and not root it is probably a question that a lot of people would be interested in. And nice side ways attempt at a jab with the comment about people spending to much time here. People that are here enjoy their time here. Enjoy learning. Enjoy modding, rooting, hacking. But I don't expect some one with a stock development phone to understand that. You have your hobbies we have ours.

That is definitely why some people choose a Nexus devices, but there is also a large amount of people who choose them for "quick" updates and a stock experience. It is the only way to achieve those things. Some people probably also choose the Nexus S because it is a really nice, smaller handset with an awesome screen.
Don't forget, some people got them because best buy was giving them away for free.
Not me, although I did get mine for free, I got mine for "fastboot OEM unlock".

As others have said, this was the wrong section for this, but I will not harp on that.
I also want to apologize for a very poor showing from our community. Sometimes this forum is an embarrassment, especially in juxtaposition to other Linux communities. There are a good deal of very arrogant people here, who just cant seem to help jumping all over the new guy. Im surprised no one called you a noob.
With all of that said, I want to agree with your posting above. Speaking as a system admin for a mid-sized company, your reasoning for owning this phone is the exact reason why it has been handed out to every employee here.
Now on to your question. Because of the age of our phone, the development community behind it is very mature. Not the users, but the tools. It is very hard to brick your phone, in fact you might say you would have to go out of your way to truly brick the device. You might get a soft brick, but even that is hard to do and is still easily fixed via ODIN.
As others have said, there are very easy to follow instructions on unlocking and rooting this device. These are not really hacks, as this phone was meant to have these things done to it. I do understand the hesitation, though after the first time you go though doing it, you will wonder what you were so scared of in the first place. You can always give this thread a try, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250583&highlight=one+click+root
to make things easy on yourself. After you get it rooted, familiarize yourself with making a NAND backup in the custom recovery first thing. This is basically an image backup of your device allowing you to jump back to safety should you do something wrong during a custom rom install.
Here is the way I look at it. If you have your phone rooted with a custom rom and it breaks and you need to return it for some reason, then ODIN will flash you back to stock and you'll have no worries about returning it to Sprint. If you some how destroy your phone to the point where not even ODIN will have access to fix it(AKA your phone goes swimming), then Sprint will not have access to the device either and will have no clue you rooted it. What some of these knuckleheads are poorly trying to get across to you, is that the phone you own, wants to be rooted.
Good luck and welcome to the community.
Heyy ya'll, I am so frustrated!! I have bought the Verizon S5 with hopes to get it unlocked soon, but nothing is there!! This is so frustrating -- I signed up with verizon and pay $150/month for 6 gigz with all else unlimited, but the root is one thing that I was looking for. It is frustrating because I probably should've gotten myself a Sprint/Tmobile that was unrooted before even release and it is cheaper!! Ugh!!! By the time unlock happens, a new S series will come out!
Thanks for listening to me! I feel better

You bought a phone without root to begin with. I understand your frustrated but if you wanted a phone with root you should of done homework beforehand. if you wanted the S5 specifically with root, then you probably should switch carriers.
I'm not trying to be rude, its just this post really has no meaning. Your frustrations are just like many, but there is no reason to just start a post on it. Be like a lot of people and be patient. if its going to be rooted one day it will, if you really do not want to wait go an by a phone that is already rooted and not one hoping to eventually be rooted/unlocked because the fact it is just may not happen.
Should of got a developer edition phone...

Yet there are others who have switched and love the M8. Each person is different and should make a decision they feel right with. Many folk are happy with the S5, even without root. For others the lack of root is a deal breaker.
I personally love my M8 as much as I did my S3. I didn't go for the S5 because of Knox and the locked bootloader. That's me though and I would not deign to denigrate anyone simply because their priorities are different than my own.

Hi. Me and the other developers have been trying to get our hands on the new Android 6.0 boot.img. If anyone is running the soak test people please PM me.
Thanks
Shawn
Did they actually start the soak test, or is it still the test drive?
Does it benefit you that much to have a pre release version? If you want to make roms, why wouldn't you wait until the final version of the software is released? I know that, usually, a soak is very similar to a final release (and who knows with these "test drives"), but not always. And since the 5.0 botched release caused several problems, why wouldn't you wait?
None of us got it. Unless the few people who beta-tested it not (soak tested) it.
Its against NDA so no one will bother

Well it was too prepare. They want to get a mostly stable version before they push it to the super soakers to make sure the 5.0 bricking disaster doesn't happen again. From what I have read we do NOT want them to rush things. Once it is safe the soakers will get it and then everyone. As long as it is within a month I do not mind if it means smooth and mostly bug free
I welcome the caution of Motorola. Or maybe they are already soak testing but the group members are so good they are keeping it on the DL

I can confirm the 5.0 disaster ... It was Lollipop massacre ... It happened on the Moto G (First Gen), one of the first moto device to receive the lollipop update through Soak test ... the image was leaked and people started flashing them, there were some minor bugs in the image, and whenever people tried to get to stable kitkat, or stock Rom in order to get official update their phone got permanently bricked ...
There are major changes in the Bootloader during the major android updates, so it's best to take precautions and wait patiently till someone confirms a proper procedure .
I can confirm the soak test isn't fake.
Didn't want to share this whatever.

As the saying goes, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease," right? I believe if enough of us email Big Sammy about our discrepancy with these locked bootloaders, perhaps we will get some sort of reply? Even if the answer is a no, wouldn't that be better than false hope? I posted the email address in another board yesterday and felt it needed it's own thread. So here goes: [email protected]
I called Samsung four times yesterday, and on the fourth try, successfully got escalated to a level two technical support agent. He, and the other agents I had the pleasure of speaking to, had no information about future updates, bootloaders, or anything pertaining to root. BUT he did say I could email my complaint to Samsungs President. He stated that as a user who typically gains root on his devices, he understood where I was coming from. I asked what phones he has and he replied (paraphrased) "a galaxy S5 international, rooted and an ASUS device, also rooted,". I think Samsung needs to know that they've killed all potential development on a spectacular device and, in turn, have lost loyal customers because of it.

I can't say I blame you. I've noticed that a majority of known developers are leaving for the HTC. I may follow suit once my term is up on my S7. So sad to see such a great device collapse into itself like this. Despite its shortcomings, I really enjoy my S7. However, bloatware, the inability to speed up the device and manage other root privileges is seriously ruining my experience.

Question. isn't Android 6.0 to blame for a lot of the new security features ? aren't the locked bootloaders , to secure all the " PAY " features in these new phones ?
just a newbie question ps I hate my HTC M9 and it is also locked on boot lader has S-ON too
I emailed the " sunshine" crew about removing the S=ON so far no one has contacted me, and I gave the same email I use in here.
since I WILL NEVER put my credit card info into the phone , I could care less if after rooting a phone I get some sort of virus that might steal my contacts , who cares .
sure would like to know what you will develop on HTC 6.0 that you can't on a S7 running 6.0 or 6.0.1 Android OS?
thanks for putting up . old **** here

You go to the HTC site to unlock your bootloader (free).
You use PayPal to pay for sunshine unlock, they don't get your credit card number. Sunshine crew is very reputable, they gave me S-off on my M9
Well if everyone has given up on the Qualcomm version of the S7, then there is no need for this thread. I've seen quite a bit of activity in the Exynos variant threads. Has anyone checked to see if tmobile can be run on it? I'd fork out the cash for one if it were a smart move.

thanks will try your suggestion next. finally got this M9 rooted, all my failures were due to the bootloader that I unlocked, somehow , got locked up again , only thing I can think of is the RESET's I did from settings ?
anyway I re-unlocked it again , and this time TWRP finally installed. now I need to re read posts telling me what S=OFF would do for me.
thanks again
S-off means literally security off which means your bootloader is unlocked.

It'll allow you to install updated firmware for your phone
F Samsung, last one. I'm butt hurt, to the level of stiches.
sent from my bootloader locked $700 SM-G930T.
I emailed for you. I don't expect any sort of reply. I already ordered the HTC 10 and have all the tools ready to unlock it and flash away.
If an exploit is found, I would come back to Samsung in a heartbeat, though!

Well I think an exploit has been found, but Samsung is lurking in xda. They said it safe for all, they're just waiting to do a tutorial for it and avoid samsung from patching. The newest update seem to have patched this certain exploit so don't update.

I quickly threw his post but keep in mind he is working with the sprint variant.
Once they can confirm it's safe.

Thanks friend. Glad someone is still working for an exploit and that you're skimming the threads. [emoji106] [emoji106]

I just gave that phone back. Can't see the screen with sunglasses on unless it's sideways. The flow of everything didn't make any sense to me and I didn't find the camera halfway special. Just my opinion andexperience. I had the phone 2 days before giving it back.
