Unlocking bootloaders voids warranty in USA? - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

I find people saying otherwise but from what I can tell according to HTC's warranty statement, and calling in and speaking to a customer service rep, the warranty is void if the bootloaders are unlocked. Does anyone have any info contrary to this?
Guess I'm sticking to my pixel xl

All over the product page for the U11 it declares that unlocking the boot loader doesn't void the warranty. Htc Dev hasn't caught up to reflect this.

Do you have a link? When I checked their product page I don't see anything about the warranty not being voided...

Cannot find it on the page from mobile browser (or they have removed it) but quick Google search shows it:

Yeah looks like they removed it, it's not there even on a computer. That's interesting

Yeah I remember seeing it on htc website before. Now it's gone.

They have removed it in last few days, on 5th it was still there
https://web.archive.org/web/20170705062532/http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/

That's so strange... I know their warranty for devices since 2016 states that unlocking the bootloaders will void the warranty.

Just like they edited out band 4 support on the Verizon specifications. Bummer

Doubt it... you have to get the unlock binary blob from HTCDev, right?

Question regarding the warranty. If I unlock the bootloader and then decide to return the phone within the normal 30 day return period will they accept it? Or does voiding the warranty also void the return policy?

It probably depends on where you bought it honestly. HTC themselves may check but I doubt a retailer like Amazon would, or even know how to tell.

I'm gonna keep screenshots of these just in case I have to fight with them on warranty issues. Although they have always said warranty is void but never had any issues with it. They never even mention it on the phone when getting a replacement.

I hope the devs figure out another way to unlock future phones besides that method or I won't be buying anymore HTC phones. That will void your warranty, and so far I've had 4 defective HTC phones out of 4 so I wouldn't take the chance and give up my warranty.

My problems must have been user error, the power button was sticking and it was recessed into the phone, another one had a messed up audio jack, the next had the same issue and this one has the audio jack issue as well just not as bad and this new one also has random reboots even on the new OTA GB radio, the last three only had reboots on froyo radios.

They always release the source to the kernel, just not always right away. It was posted before on http://developer.htc.com
They'll unlock the bootloader to the evo 3d and sensation but not the tbolt. Their unlocking tool will require you to provide them with your device information to void your warranty. Only good I see is developers might be able to use the tool to unlock other devices like the tbolt and future devices without having to provide htc with any of your phones information.

On top of that from what I have been reading it is somewhat limiting when compared to s-off. No hboot, radio, or splash1 flashing. Last I heard kernels had to be fastbooted on. There is probably more I don't know about. Voids your warranty and you can't even switch around to find what radio works best for you. Unlocked my a$$!!

How come when you go to htcdev.com no verizon phones are listed for unlocking bootloader including the thunderbolt? [TIP] Do NOT use the official S-OFF method!

Don't know if someone posted this before but:
As the title says, do NOT use the stock unlock method if you ever think you'll need a warranty replacement, they store your serial number after using the tool, this means that they know your warranty is voided. By using the official tool you're basically guaranteeing you won't be able to get a warranty replacement.
Ohhhhh Thank kuuuuuu
This is OLD news my friend. If you read the HTC website terms before using it (which you SHOULD be doing), you will see it states that your warranty is effected.
The problem with this is how does rooting alone void your warranty. Say you just want an unlocked phone for the sake of having an unlocked phone. That alone shouldn't void your warranty.

LOL. Please. As if HTC shouldn't do anything to your warranty simply because you "may" want to unlock it just to unlock it. They should be cool with it just because maybe .1% of people do it just to do it.
I had my turbocharged car chipped just to, you know, do it. Not because I want to drive fast or anything.
I've done repairs on my Nexus One (dust) with an unlocked bootloader. Not at first but that's because i sent it in with CM. They sent it back to me and I restored it to stock and they fixed it.
If you have an issue that cant be caused by software they should fix it.
Anyone with a Nexus at launch, could you root the phone without the official method? Nope and it was like that for a very long time because there was no incentive, we could root out of the box.
HTC lagged it hard with their method and it defeats the purpose of what they are doing. Who unlocks the phone and doesn't know about XDA?

LOLOL The Scotsman is anything but a troll and this thread is anything but useful. In any case, it actually only voids PARTS of your warranty I.E. if you need a new battery cover or if your volume rocker breaks you won't be up ****'s creek without a paddle.
If you brick your phone, you will be. Not only is this thread redundant, its title is inaccurate and wrong.

It's also inaccurate. In the U.S. a company can't void your warranty for product modifications made by the user unless those modifications specifically caused the defect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson–Moss_Warranty_Act
And I don't blame HTC for trying to control their warranty costs. If someone unlocks their phone and OC's the chip and fries it or does something else equally stupid the user should have to pay for the repair. You pay to play.

Haha I sent my Nexus in after restoring to stock, they fixed it and relocked the bootloader.
Next time, I sent it in with CM7, they sent it back with CM7 and they repaired it.
Guys! The HTC Method is ok! Its was the same at the Nexus One! You void your warranty with unlocking but only the software not the hardware! If you flash back to stock and the error is still theire (software related) they will repairit and hardware they will everytime repair...They take no warranty for flashed software that is not authorized by them ... and this is ok!
AND they are not really able to find out if u flashed a bad radio or hboot! when its bricked. they can easily restore your phone!! This warranty thing just that you are aware of bad software!! They will repair your phone if its needed to be!
But it is fair that we brick our devices and they need to repair? No! We buy the phone as it is! Root is a feature that is not mentioned by HTC!!!

Well HTC still state on their website that the warranty is affected:
Please note that changing your bootloader can cause significant issues with your device and once you have unlocked your device, you have agreed to the disclaimer that states a change in warranty status such that in the event you render your device unusable, you are responsible for the recovery of your device, whether by repair or by other means.

1) You brick your phone doing stupid stuff - HTC's not going to fix it.
2) You're unlocked and running a custom ROM and your display dies - HTC will fix it.
What they're saying is inline with what I originally posted. They'll repair a warrantied defect on the phone provided that unlocking it didn't cause the defect. Their statement pretty clearly infers they won't fix a bricked phone for free. It doesn't say your warranty is void if you unlock the phone and it has an unrelated defect. In the U.S., they couldn't say that if they wanted to.

[Q] About JTAG Repair

Hey guys...
I was unfortunate enough to come across some aroma/twrp bug while updating my kernel and now my phone is bricked. Oh well, life happens. I am going to have to send it in for JTAG repair. I found that mobiletechvideos.com does JTAG repair for $60 so that's not all terrible. Do any of you have experience with them? Is there service good? From what I can tell they look legit..
On their website they also also have numerous "addons" you can choose for your order such as "ROM/Root upgrade service" and "S-off". Now, does that mean that once I get the phone back it will be in a state where I cannot root the device? I have my old bootloader unlock code from before... would that work to root the phone after this procedure is performed? It is my understanding that they (mobile tech videos) modify whatever image they push to your phone to include your IMEI information. Would that give me troubles if I tried to unlock the phone using my old unlock code?
Perhaps I should email them directly.
Anyway, what are your thoughts?
I would ask them, but I believe they can set things up however you want. I recall seeing one person saying they got it back s-off, etc.

But there are distributers on this side. Madusa riff boxes will do the same thing. The JTag site has a list of suppliers that sell riff boxes in the US. Since more devices are becoming usb supported, the need for soldering is limited to certain devices.

Hi,
I want to send my unlocked device in to have the dust under the screen removed and the bezel glued down properly. It is 2 months old. My question:
Is there anything i should do or ask or mention before sending it in?

Sorry mine and Marty's comments were a bit sarcastic. You probably won't lose your unlock status for removing the dust unless they replace the motherboard as part of that process.
I'd ask Asus what is involved first. Don't take our words about what they will or won't do

Indeed my remark was sarcastic -- and sbdags is absolutely right: your lock status will not change as long as they keep their hands off your motherboard. Seeing that your screen is the problem, I'd be surprised if they had to work on that. Even if they do, you'd have a case to take to them and get it fixed.
If the main board in the device is not being replaced to touched, the bootloader will not be relocked. They have no reason to relock it if all you are doing is getting the screen sent cleaned out. Even if the screen was replaced, there's not reason to relock the bootloader. Now, if the main board had to be changed, than yes; new main board = locked bootloader on new one.
Now, I'm not sure where you're from, but here in the US, unlocking the bootloader would void the warranty. Even a defective screen would not be covered once you unlock it. The warranty is taken as whole. I've heard that this is not true in the EU, but I am not 100% sure as I do not know the region's warranty policies.
I would call and ask. And if they can make an RMA for you, it doesn't hurt to request that they do not relock it.

Hey bro,
I made a post on this section about my Tf700 not turning. + my bootloader was unlocked.
I emailed the Asus RMA department for RMA#, they told me that it was 65$ for labour fee + Material charges.
SO i just sent it in, kinda getting mad about dying on me suddenly.
After 2 days, they sent my tf700 back, they locked my boot loader (I thiink. New part # was 90R-Ok0QMB20000Y, Main_BD). Main board?
They didn't charge me anything. They sent it through purolator express for free. Everything free of charge.
I expected to do pay something but it was all free even though my bootloader was unlocked AND email CRS told me that fee was 100%.

So with that being said the screen has ONE long crack in it. Other than that its in working condition. It's on the current 4.4.4. firmware with a Unlocked Bootloader and S-off. Where would be the best place to sell this? This is my first time selling a smartphone, so im kind of lost here...

Swappa (link above, xda approved) best value but not sure if they accept cracked screens. Craigslist is fastest way, see what others are going for and compete. If it were me, I would buy lcd on amazon, fix and either use or sell for way more value and make up the cost of replacing the lcd.

You can do this too, but I would recommend glyde and usell. You can sell used phones and also buy used phones on those websites
The HTC Advantage warranty covers screen replacement for 6 months...

+1 .. be sure to ask them to send you a free shipping label too! they are very good about getting it replaced. Make sure before you call you downgrade and lock and s-on first! They can see that too if your phone is online!

Thats where I screwed up... I RUUed and everything got everything back to stock, BUT forgot to S-on and lock the Bootloader. So they gladly voided my warranty... I'm not to mad though My memory has gotten me in worse situations. EX. Going to and ATM to withdraw money just to leave the money in the dispenser!!!

You already did this or called them up on the phone today and they said this? I would restore it to 4.4.3 and locked and s-on. They cannot void physical warranty like this because you were s-off. When you call them back tell them you want the six month warranty glass replacement. Don't even bring up s status or unlock status. If they do tell them it's 100% stock.

dottat, I was under the impression that you were a big advocate of once s-off, never turn it back on.

If HTC was going to replace a phone or screen under warranty and pay for shipping, it would be something I would s-on for. I would put it on an os and firmware combo that is exploitable by sunshine hoping they wouldn't upgrade it. If they do upgrade, you would have to wait (in this case) for sunshine 3.0.
Swappa is the best way to go. I have bought many phones from there and even when there's an issue, the seller is more often than not pretty understanding and the Swappa staff is top notch with customer service.
