Getting an AMOLED phone for the first time - Questions about screen burn-in - General Questions and Answers

Hey everyone, I'm planning on buying a new phone and I would like to get for the first time one with an AMOLED screen, probably a Galaxy S6/S7. However, I'm pretty worried about the possibility of the screen getting burn-ins over time, as I plan to use the phone for at least 2 years and I can't say much about warranty, as most probably I will get an already used phone.
My main concern is related to static images, especially static UI elements, such as those from chat apps, web browsers or even games which have parts of the screen constantly displaying the same things. I am a moderately active phone user, using it 4-5 hours daily on average.
I plan on taking some basic preventions, like hiding the status bar often and keeping the screen off when not using the phone, but what about the static elements I mentioned above?
I also have a few other related questions:
-The burn-in of a part of the screen does especially occur after one long displaying of a static image or after repeatedly displaying the same image in the same place over time (such as the buttons in a chat app, which is very often used) ?
- Would displaying a kind of screensaver 1-2 times a week, for a few hours, which alternates between colours displayed one at a time on the entire screen, help prevent burn-in?
- What other easy tips could I apply regularly in order to prevent it as much as possible?
This is the only thing that has me considering still getting an LCD phone, as I don't want these preventions to become tiresome. Please, share your answers and personal experiences with me, I really want to make a wise choice. Thanks!

I would post links to pages listing precautionary/preventative measures but I think it would be best if you did what I did. Do a Google search for:
"How to prevent burn in amoled"
It will give you many articles, guides and suggestions to read to learn different ways to reduce burn in.

What have been your experiences with AMOLED so far, have you got any visible burn-ins under regular usage and basic cautionary measures?

I have an S3 that has a little bit of burn in but it's barely perceivable, it's 3 years old, I didn't use precautionary measures.
None of my other devices have burn in but I haven't used them as much either.
When I said "it would be best for you to do what I did", I meant the Google search, I used those search terms and found a lot of information giving tips to reduce burn in. That's why I suggested you do the same search.

Night clock & screen "burn-in"?

Hey guys,
I decided that I want to have a simple clock app running at night when my phone is plugged in. I searched the market and found a lot of options; some with some cool features like "shake or tap to read time" and some with a flashlight built in.
Anyway, do I need to be concerned about "burn-in" with the One XL's screen? (I didn't see any apps where the time bounced around like an old school screensaver on a CRT monitor!) I'm guessing this just isn't an issue with these screens, but I wanted to make sure.
Finally, does anybody have an app they like for this? Or a specific feature to look for?
Thanks!
Billy

From my understanding, at least for TV screens and computer monitors, LCDs don't technically "burn-in" like old CRT screens. But what can happen is called image persistence. Pretty similar to burn-in, where displaying a constant image for a long time period will leave a "ghost" image on the screen. But the difference with LCDs, is that the effect is reversible. Usually, turning the screen off, and/or playing constantly changing images for several hours will correct the persistent image. LCDs are much more resistant to image persistence that CRTs are to burn-in. And newer LCDs are even more protected than older ones. But none are completely immune, AFAIK. So screen savers aren't just for old school CRT monitors.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_persistence
Not sure if the display on this phone is different from LCD TVs, as there seem to be a wide array of LCD subcategories.
Sounds like you are considering using a clock app that keeps the screen on all night? Not sure if having the screen on all night (then off for most of the day) is enough to cause image persistence. There may be people on here that do it, that may be able to comment. But I personally would probably avoid it. Using the shake or tap to read functions you mentioned is probably a good idea.
No.
Try desk clock plus it has the night clock and it moves around the screen and it actually a very nice app anyways.

[Q] screen causes neausea

I purchased a Nexus 5 within the past month. I love the ease of use and general setup, and although I selected red online, the phone itself is caution orange - but I quite like it as it's easy to find.
However, the screen makes me incredibly nauseous within minutes of use. I have tried dimming the lights and increasing the font size, but it does not make a difference. The screen itself makes me incredibly sick. After searching online, I learned that others have experienced the same symptoms after using certain Android phones. Why is this happening? I presume it is related to the LCD screen. Thanks...this phone was expensive.
I had the same problem but for me it was mostly after some intense gaming. I guess I just got used to it after a while cause it does not happen anymore. Some times it was so bad I thought I was gonna throw up.
Just wear sun glasses when Flashing and you will be cured!
Hard to say what's going on. My first guess is that it's the refresh rate on the screen.
Screen makes u nauseatic?
Flash makes u celebrity
Maybe its the animal porn you're watching? ?
But seriously, maybe flash a kernel with colour control and change the gamma values?

Are you using any screen protectors?
I have got this before, but that was switching from LCD to Amoled phones. Nexus 5 is LCD so there shouldn't be a problem.
If I use the matte type of screen protectors where colors are distorted, then the screen will actually make me dizzy.
I think it could happen with any phone, though bigger screens probably don't help. From what I can tell its usually caused by the difference between your eyes looking at the screen and your peripheral vision seeing everything around and behind your phone. I know some people who feel nauseous when using any 3"+ screen mobile and moving, so walking or in a vehicle even.
If that's the case you might be able to mitigate the issue by holding the screen closer to your face, but I don't think it's anything Android specific. Certainly not Nexus 5 specific.
It was big news when iOS7 launched. The culprit were the animations. Maybe reducing animations scale to .5x or .25x would help.

AMOLED screen burn-in

I'm using Waze app every single day for about 1.5 hour.
in the past when i had galaxy S4, after 2 month of daily use, i noticed on white pages i still see all the static banners and buttons of waze.
baisically, using Waze in daily basis, burn-in my screen in the static area of the app like the up and down banners, speed meter etc...
Can it happen also in my new galaxy s8+? what to you think? did the amoled technology haven't changed a lot in the past 4 or 5 years?
There is a new feature in Waze called battery saver, it dims the screen when you are over a certain speed and a certain distance from the next instruction, that might help with it.
Though to be honest I use it for about the same amount of time everyday and don't even think about any burn in, its definitely not something that I've noticed happening on my phone so far

So far.... the phone is pretty new so we can tell right now. hope it will never happen but my S4 experience keeps me worried about this phenomenon.

Definitely can still happen on the s8+. I'd recommend not having your screen excessively bright while static images are on screen if you can help it. It's a pain but this is just an unfortunate trade-off with these beautiful screens.

It's not a trade-off. It can happen with virtually ANY type of display. LCD, LED, OLED, etc. No mobile phone display is immune.

I'm sorry if you dont like it but its the truth. I absolutely love the Samsung phones so I'm not against the phone. I've had the Note, S3, S4, S5, S6E, S7E and now the S8+.
I'm the first person to correct somebody wrongly bashing these phones but in this case it is what it is mate. Its well documented and accepted as fact that screen burn in on Amoled is more prevalent than some other display technologies. You need to be a little bit more mindful with Amoled if you want to keep the screen looking nice with heavy use.

Based on your first response you obviously didn't grasp mine at all whatsoever. I wasn't comparing Amoled directly to any other screen technology but the fact remains that the prevelance of screen burn in is generally higher than other screen types in general. That's not just conjecture on my part.
Its accepted fact. Also I'd appreciate it if you dropped the childish, rude and flippant attitude towards me. I was simply responding to your straw man argument.

There was one week where I used it excessively. And I kept the screen full bright. When I saw the screen burn in with the arrow of waze navigation. I started looking up on the Internet to solve the burn in issue somehow. That's when I found out that it's a common issue on amoled screens apparently. And the only way to solve it was to send it back to Samsung for a repair or replacement.

Yeah unfortunately its one of those things that you just have to be mindful of, even when you're not on full brightness.
I was pretty lucky with most of my galaxy phones especially considering how heavily I used them, although my S7E was an exception.
I still have the phone and after just 13 months you can clearly see discoloration on the screen and admittedly very feint burn in on UI elements ie. the status bar. The screen discoloration is pretty bad and perfectly matches the YouTube app, where the video is playing up top and the static white comment section below put uneven "wear" on my screen. I'm now trying to make a habit to watch longer YouTube videos in fullscreen to avoid a similar result.

Yes they did. I rang samsung and told them about the issue. They got the phone picked up from my house. I was expecting them to probably just replace the screen but to my shock they sent me a brand new sealed s7 edge.

Amoled is notorious for burn-ins. I would avoid using any app for prolonged periods of time.

I work for a carrier and never in my 14 years have I seen a LCD screen burn in I have however seen multiple AMOLED panels with burn in especially demo phones (yes on all day rolling content but so are the LCD models) this is a risk with organic displays to his point is true it is a trade off whichever way you sugercoat it

Huawei Watch 2 Classic - Screen Uniformity?

Hi,
I'm new to this forum so apologies if this issue has been discussed before (I did a search but couldn't find anything.)
I've just bought a Huawei Watch 2 Classic and so far I've been very pleased with it, except for one thing. A day or two since I started using it, I noticed that on a grey background i.e. the one used for both the notification cards and the app menu, there's a sort of 'smudge' or unevenness to the screen at around the 10 O'Clock mark that's distracting. It's quite subtle and hard to describe (a cloud? bright patch? light bleed?) but once you've noticed it it's hard not to see it:
(I tried to post pictures of the problem here but I can't yet as I'm a new member)
It's always going to be difficult to take a picture of such an issue as the camera will correct for white balance, exposure etc but trust me it's more noticeable in person. In bright light it's also harder to see and is most noticeable at night or in dim light. To be completely honest, I can't see the issue on any other background or situation except when viewing notification cards or the app menu but I try not to go looking for it either.
All I want to know is am I being pedantic or should I be requesting a replacement?
Can you try and post pictures, I know .ay not be easy.
I haven't seen this issue but I've noticed the screen goes grey when on standby

I tried in every way possible to upload pictures or at least links to them but I can't as I'm a new member and therefore I have to make around 10 posts before I can publish any external links or pictures. I never got a response back from the forum owner requesting that I be able to do so either.
Perhaps when I've made a few more posts I'll upload the pictures for you to see, if only for future reference.
For information, I ended up sending it back for a full refund anyway - not necessarily because of the screen issue but because I couldn't see how it fit into my life. Also the supplier was out of stock for a replacement anyway so the choice was sort of made for me. I found it was actually more annoying having constant notifications on my wrist than on my phone, not to mention being socially unacceptable to have to keep looking down at my watch on a frequent basis. Unless these notifications were read or actioned as soon as they arrived, I found the interface to be too clunky to deal with them later which meant a lot of swiping and prodding, not an ideal experience.
Never mind, perhaps the smart watch market will mature in the not too distant future. I may well re-visit the idea at some point but for now I'll stick to a traditional timepiece.

actually when you get used to it you'll know that it's way better than traditional watches, you can see the weather and track your activities on your watch and listen to music without even taking your phone with you! and its getting way more normal in social life to have a smart watch specially when there are many people using apple watch right now that has a lot less features than android wear! (maybe not a lot but hey, its android!)

Status Bar "Burn In"

It seems that a large number of 3 XLs have shipped with some sort of "burn in" in the status bar area. There was a relatively active thread recently where some people, including myself, reported this.
Today I found a video that works really well for demonstrating the issue.
For those that can watch it and report their findings, here's the link (go to 3:44):
https://youtu.be/xHRDQHAy5dY
Go to minute 3:44 to see a grayish loading screen. I recommend viewing the phone in a dark or slightly dim room at 50 - 55% brightness. Make sure you are using fullscreen as well.
I'm including a photo of mine so you guys can get an idea of what the problem is.

So what can be done?
It's easier to see with attached images. Cause is likely bc you use nacho notch, which never uses the status bar pixels, thus making them the brightest. Or, normal usage, where most apps use darker shades of the header bar. It's on my phone too. It's the nature of OLED technology. I own an OLED TV, and it exhibits image retention. It also has a feature to refresh the panel to remove burn in and retention.
That said, the conditions used to find the issue are dim and solid color. If you are constantly in full screen looking at single color images with a dim screen, I'd suggest returning and getting a different phone (probably an LCD screen). Bc all OLED panels can do it. Not all do, but it's made of organic material. If you stare at the sun, it "burns in" your eye and you see a spot until you go blind or your eye refreshes.
Conversely, if you own a newer LED TV with a backlighting that is on the cheaper end, you'll definitely have dirty screen effect (DSE) which is essentially the same effect but due to poor manufacturing. It's noticable in panning shots and, you guessed it, solid color screens. My Samsung TV from 3 years ago is the worst. Big chunky darker bars running through the screen. That drove me more crazy bc you can't fix it. It's due to the **** manufacturing.
Google could fix this by using whatever they did with the nav bar. Notice there's no burn in down there. I personally wouldn't be worried. It's noticable once in a while for average users. Not the end of the world, unless you're like me and have OCD and it'll drive you up the wall. Then you should take the prescription I'm on, bc nothing really bothers me anymore.
tldr; cause different brightness used on status bar. Fix, new phone, Google, or LCD screen.
I did the full immersive via adb shell and settings put global policy_control immersive.full so that both are hidden unless I pull down or swipe up to view the status bar or nav bar. This way they are not on the screen constantly. I did this with my Pixel 2 XL and after a year of 80% brightness and 7hrs of SOT daily, the burn in was very faint.
I hope the burn in is minimized via this method on my P3XL as well but if not, is what it is.

I don't use nacho notch (don't even know what it does), don't hide the notch either, and am aware that this is the nature of OLEDs which is why I hate them.
BUT.
The phone was like this STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. A friend of mine also recently got a 3 XL... And guess what? His was also "burnt in" as soon as he turned it on.
I do use navbar apps to prevent uneven burn in on screen and that's how I've done it with my previous OLED phones.
I went ahead and requested an RMA but the sample size of 3 XLs that I've seen with this bar burn in is very high (as in, all 3 XLs have it to some extent, straight out of the box), so I'm not optimistic about the outcome.
Again, it's expected that OLEDs will wear down over time. Perhaps in a year some effects of burn in will be more noticeable, but the phones are SHIPPING LIKE THIS. That's a big problem. Is it burn in? Are they using a different panel piece for the notch area? Did someone goof up during testing and left a batch of phones with their screens on for too long? Who knows.

Nothing. Try an RMA and hope you get a device without burn in. All the 3 XLs have this burn in to an extent. Something went wrong at the factory, is my best guess.

What do you consider a "large number of 3 XLs"? Can you point to any other documentation of this other that the two threads you are highly active in? It seems like you enjoy your iPhone X a lot more so I'm not quite sure why you need to come here and bash another device consistently. I mean if you're not happy with a device then return it and keep the one you are happy with. Image retention has been around for a long time, either live with it or not.

I mean if you're not happy with a device then return it and keep the one you are happy with. Image retention has been around for a long time, either live with it or not.

Wow, just wow.
Why so defensive? Do you feel threatened? You're even assuming that I'm bashing this phone; are you really that scared of people saying negative things about your precious new phone? I'm just here to do research.
Don't know where you got that I use an iPhone X, unless you misread one of posts... I have access to one, not that it is my personal device. Anyway, to put you at ease, I've been an Android user for a long time now. Started with an Xperia Play then jumped to Nexus and later Pixels 1 - 3. I like this phone, and I am relatively happy with it, but I'm not okay with receiving a phone with burn in straight from the factory.
I'll provide some sources for you, albeit, they're not official documentation. Just user reports:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/9oc4ka/the_pixel_3_xl_at_least_the_unit_i_have_has/
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/9qvxdd/status_bar_burn_in_out_of_the_box/
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/9r82zi/anyone_without_a_status_bar_burn_in_on_their/
If you would, read through those.
You will see that people claim that the status bar actually has a slight tint to differentiate it form the rest of the screen and that's true, but the OPs in those are claiming that it's always visible even in fullscreen mode when watching a video or viewing a photo.
I've also personally seen demo units and a friend's unit that has it, as well as my own personal device of course. Also consider the people from the previous threads here.
Again, this is not image retention or burn in from personal use, I jus don't know what to call it. Phones are shipping with this already on them. I'm trying to gather information to understand what it could be, and see what my odds of getting a phone without this are (or if I should even bother with RMAs).

Lol, threatened? About a phone? I feel threatened by some jackass tailgating me on the GSP at 75 mph but not by an internet post about a device. So we can dispense with the silliness, ok?
I did read those posts before I replied to you before. It seems like there is not a huge amount of support for your position although there is some. This has been going on for years now (supposed burn-in) and for some reason Google seems to get the brunt of the criticisms by anonymous users on forums. Personally, if I couldn't live with the device then I'd return it and move on. I don't find it helpful to just rant and complain when there are other alternatives.
What I meant by documentation on burn-in was independent, verified research by a reputable company or entity. Not a bunch of yahoos on Reddit. I find that disingenuous at best and more than likely people with nothing else to do. Bottom line, you don't like the phone then return it and buy an iPhone XS, which btw is absolutely gorgeous. I was on the fence for a bit but decided to give the 3 another shot this time around.

You are affected by my posts after all. Your claims are heavily biased in favor of Google. Why? Otherwise you wouldn't be complaining about "Google getting the brunt of the criticisms by anonymous users on forums." You care about Google. It stings seeing this, therefore your response is to attack me, as you did with your first post.
Again, I'm not here to fight. After all, it wasn't me who came to this thread with an aggressive tone. If you're not going to help, then please go defend Google somewhere else.
If you plan to contribute then I'd appreciate it if you at least said whether you have burn-in or not. Either way, it would be helpful to know.
As for the sources, I did mention they were not official documentation, it's the best we have so far. The closest to "official" is that one post by a supposed journalist that mentioned the situation with his pre-release unit. Sadly, there isn't more than that, considering the visibility of the "burn-in" is dependent on many factors.
Also, I've been calling it "burn-in" but I'm sure it's another issue altogether with the panel they used. If it were actual burn-in we'd be seeing the status bar icons on there as well.
Ah, and I wish I had more phone choices but I use Project Fi, so I'm stuck with their small selection of phones. The Pixel line has been good to me so far, so I've stayed with these phones and Fi, but I can't deny that I would take an LCD phone (I know they have an LCD LG, but no LG for me) over an OLED any day of the week.

I'm responding to your posts, that's it. Don't flatter yourself in importance. Nothing you say "stings" nor do I care what you do. I'm just correcting your inaccuracies and innuendos. I'm actually biased in terms of Apple since I own their stock but unfortunately I don't own Google. Apple stock got creamed on Friday but hopefully it will come back. Good luck on your RMA, you'll eventually get something you can live with.
Honestly I really doubt it's actual burn in or "differential aging" because I saw it on the white boot screen and this is on phone that I just got as well a few days ago. I don't hide the notch or use nacho notch and rarely have any apps that don't color the entire status bar. Seems for whatever reason the top of the display is always a shade darker than the rest. Google doing Google things?

Exactly! It's visible during the boot screen, but it just can't be burn-in since it's seen on newly opened phones... I just don't know what to call this. It might just be that the top is calibrated differently for some odd reason, somehow. I wish I knew for sure.

That's a possibility. I've seen someone suggest that before, as well.

Yeah man it's a head scratcher. But if it's truly as the other poster is saying and they're separate panels then you'd be able to see it under the glass. Plus the Ifixit teardown they take the display out and it just looks like 1 big panel. https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Google...d77ec31b9:m:m1d1CS5DqB0JZHN94mXt2Vg:rk:2:pf:0 show's a replacement panel and screen and it looks like it's one.
+1, I thought I was going crazy but my 3 XL came like this too. I pre-ordered minutes after the link went live

I'll be receiving a replacement in a week or so. They did mention that they don't have any phones at the moment so it may be delayed, but hey, that might mean that I'll be getting a phone from a new batch, and we'll know whether this issue is unique to the first run of 3 XLs or not.
