Rattling sounds - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

So when I shake my phone I can hear a rattling sound, this happened for me on galaxy s7 and s8+... this rattling is probably cause by ois. As not every single phone has this rattling sound I just want to ask if your s8 have rattling sounds.

Yes mine does near the earpiece. Could it be the waterproof membrane moving about with the shaking?

Nah it's the camera's image stabilization. On my galaxy s7 the rattling sound disappeared when I opened the camera app, but on the s8 that's not the case. The reason probably that it shakes is that the front camera apparently has optical image stabilisation that doesn't work as samsung didn't make activate it or something. If you watch on YouTube galaxy s8 teardown you can see that there is optical image stabilisation on front camera but unfortunately it isn't activated.

Oh that makes sense. Yeah can confirm it still rattles with the front cam on.

Mine does make noise too... (S8). But when I open the camera and shake it doesn't make noise. I asked Samsung if it is normal but didn't get any answers yet..

Yep as said its the camera.
Its kinda has a gyro in it. So when your hand shakes the camera itself stays in place.

Is this a bad thing or not ? I just got a response from Samsung (twitter)and they are saying if the divise is making we should send it for repair.

It's normal don't worry. You probably didn't explain the problem properly to the samsung team...

I don't think that's necessarily as they aren't going to message that it's the OIS, they will say repair it etc

The headphones volume controller
I got here when searching if anyone heard a rattling noise. I noticed that, in my case, the sound comes from the volume controller. I will talk to Samsung and see if that is a manufacturing issue or something broader that affects all headphones

[Q] Camera lens of centered

Hi I just got my new Note 5 from T-mobile and I noticed main camera is not dead center unlike my note 3 or other phones I have I went back to the T-mobile store and guys there noticed the same thing and we checked the one on the display none of them were centered actually any body know about this issue store guys did not want to exchange it because they are all like that they said. any body know anything about this issue?
Mine is the same way, went to the store and we looked at the displays... All the same. =/ The guy suggested it might be because it's their first unibody design, which sounds plausible.
Camera lens of centered
Just confirmed with tmo tech that it should dead centered and mine sounds very loose clicking when moving phone around.
I think Samsung made some defective phones again lust like note 4 camera issues.
I believe it is due to the lens stabilization. If you turn the camera lens to face you, then open the camera app, the lens snaps to center, and visibly moves as the phone shakes.

You sir are absolutely correct! I found this out later last night as well.
Fwiw both mine and my wife's S6 have a lens that moves off center. It doesn't affect pictures or videos in the least.
Mine was recording clicking sound made by camera moving around as phone shake when recording video at tmobile store guys recorded video in storage room where it's very quiet I returned it I don't think I'll buy another note5 or any samsung phone untill they start to make good devices, my wife has the s6+ and does not any issues that I had with the note5.

What do you mean by this ISO?. I think you meant to say this is OIS which is moving camera lens assembly yes it should move and wiggle when not in use, when in use it should move to compansate motion and it shouldn't make clicking sound that records in to the video.
Foy your information if I was intrested to iphone I would buy one instead of an android device with or without OIS built-in $800.00 device premium price premium device I expected from samsun.
Don't forget this is a forum that people exchange information bounce ideas between each other.

I don't understand how your camera lens is making such a clicking noise laud enough to be caught by your mic... If that's the case than that's really something wrong. And peopel are over reacting returning their phone for lensbnot being centered when that's normal if you want recordba video and while spinnign stop recording and you will see how the lens is not straight

Camera OIS issue

Hello, I have a SM G920F running rooted Marshmallow.
I believe my camera's OIS is broken. Whenever I try to film without video stabiliser on the OIS works left right movement, however if I try moving up and then down the camera moves very sudden to the down, having a very noticeable effect on the video. This happens every time.
I can upload a video if any of you wishes.
Please help!
Thanks.
Yes please upload the video.. Did you try to do a factory reset?

Actually, I was about to make a thread for this...
To test your OIS (optical image stabilization) open the camera app and turn the phone around and inspect the camera lens.
Just wobble your S6 gently, you'll notice that your lens is 'stabilizing' itself.
This guy tears down the S7, which has the same kind of effect on the lens

Yes, I do notice the OIS wobbling. It goes smoothly up and then suddenly down, and that's what causes the sudden movement effect.
I'll upload the video once I get home.

May be. Since I don't have any warranty is it considered safe to go to my local phone repair shop? If they accidentally break it will they replace it for me?

Why ? Is your warranty void ? Because you tripped KNOX, perhaps ?
Romania is considered a EU country, EU warranty is valid for 2 years.
I'm thinking you could just send it for repairs at your dealership/network provider, just make a backup and flash a stock ROM.
At least, that's what I would do here in Belgium...

Something loose inside pixel's body?

Hi, I have found something curious. When I start shacking my phone I can hear noise coming from the top part of it, it sounds like a loose screw or something like that do you also have it? Is it a camera stabilization or my device is broken and I should replace it?

Likely the camera OIS module, I find just about any phone makes some sort of loose item noise if you shake it hard enough. My Pixel 2 also has a rattle though it's pretty muted compared to other phones I've had.

I just now picked up my Nexus 5x and shook it, and it seems you are correct - it makes a rattling sound also (as if something is loose). It's not surprising though, considering how many times I've dropped/tossed it, both accidentally and purposefully. I wonder if it made that noise when I first got it...
Stop shaking your phone!
Seriously though, just the ois module. Your phone is fine. lol

Yes, replacement is same
I noticed a loose sounding noise if I tap the top of the phone on the left or right edge or behind the earpiece. At first I also thought it might be the OIS. But then I notice I get a similar sound from the speaker at the bottom, if I tap the phone on the bottom edge.
Then I checked on my old Nexus 4, which does not have OIS, and it makes exactly the same type of slight rattling sound if I tap the phone on the top edge by the earpiece.
So I think there is some sort of moving part in cell phone speakers (after all something has to move to create sound waves) that rattles a little if you tap or shake the phone in the right way.

Are you joking? Because that makes no sense. I hear this type of rattling coming from the top speaker. And I hear it separately coming from the bottom speaker. There is only one haptic feedback engine in the phone so it could not produce a rattling noise in two different places in the phone. (Also from Jerry Rig's teardown, we know the haptic feedback engine is in the bottom of the phone, so it can't explain a rattling noise coming from the top of the phone.)

I didn't say haptic feedback, you said haptic feedback.
I also clearly said that it was the same type of noise coming from both the top and bottom of the phone, which means it would have to be the speakers, since that's the only thing there are two of, one in each of those positions. And I said that I had the same type of noise coming from the earpiece on my Nexus 4. So the whole point of my first post was that I was ruling out OIS, which others had suggested, and felt pretty confident the sound comes from the speakers. I wasn't looking for suggestions. I was explaining my reasoning for why it seems like it's the speakers that make the sound.

My LG K4 2017 ($100 smart phone with headphone jack) phone doesn't. Galaxy S6 doesn't. Galaxy S8 doesn't. Lol, so no, not all phones do it. Only google specifically ones (that are defective) which make these noise lol.

As I explain in my posts, I think the slight rattling noise actually comes from the speakers, not the OIS. I think the OIS guess is wrong. I've explain my reasons in more detail above.
However, in order to get the sound you have to tap the edge of the phone in just the right place and just the right way. It's easy to shake or tap the phone and not get the sound at all. So I'm pretty sure I could get this sound on all of the phones you mentioned. In fact, next time I'm in a carrier store I'll try the S8. I think it's just something speakers do. I've tried several different model phones and they all do it.

[Q] Light Rattling Sound...?

Has anyone noticed a very slight rattling sound when you shake the phone very hard coming from the top of the phone...?
Could it be the Cameras or the Speaker possibly?
I am being a bit paranoid as I dropped the phone face flat on the floor but had ZERO damage, dent, scratch or anything.
Am I being overly paranoid????
That's interesting. I've also got a rattle. I've dropped the phone a couple of times, but not onto hard surfaces. Everything is working, so I assume it's probably nothing to worry about!

That's just the OIS in the camera lens. Every phone that have OIS do that. The lens needs to move to compensate the hand shaking. If you search for "JerryRigEverything teardown" on youtube he usually test the camera and you can see the movement of the lens. For example with this p40 pro teardown

Rattling?

Today accidentally discovered that the phone has a rattle to it. Never dropped or anything. First, I thought it was the S-Pen, but even with the pen out, there is still a rattle that seems to be coming from the camera module. Anyone else's phone does that? Is it normal or should I try swapping the unit?
Its just the camera lens don't worry my last 3 Notes have done it
Thanks. Found the videos talking about the same issue on S20+. Guess it's normal. Never noticed it before on any of my Sammies. Must be a "new phone paranoia". ?

Larger the camera the more it floats until you turn on the camera. Hence more noise. I would also suggest it's more sensitive while the camera is on to a hard hit /damage.

I am experiencing that same rattle too. It seems to go away when i turn on the camera, so this is definitely due to the much talked about rattle that the camera module had with the S20 Ultra as well..
I must say that the rattle is rather annoying and random and especially annoying when i have the phone in my pocket while jogging..At least it is good to know that it is not a faulty unit but rather a feature of the lens system.
I am getting a faint clicking noise whenever I exit the camera app. I can feel it on the device too. Is this normal?

Thanks, I suppose this is due to the different camera setup. I'm coming from a Note 9, which had OIS and is completely silent, but then again it doesn't have the new sensors.
Also remember when camera has stabilisation in it that could cause the rattle noise from camera since camera itself moves when you shake the phone.
I hardly hear rattle in mine but when I face screen down I can hear a loud click from camera area and then when I face it back up with screen up I hear the click again.
So yeah camera is basically moving or it's lenses.
This is normal as long you don't see any defect in camera when using it.

Yeah I read about the rattling when shaking the device, but nothing about noise when the camera app exits...
I had the same issue. I had battery and overheating issues as well so i requested an exchange device. The old device had the rattle however i noticed the new one doesn't. Really think Samsung messed up QC with this device.
Interesting... Samsung doesn't have any stock of my device to exchange at the moment, otherwise I'd have probably asked for one. I'll see how it pans out over the next few days...
Without the camera app open when uou hold the device flat then tilt it up 90 degrees you'll hear it click every time, it doesn't matter if it's in landscape or portrait view. With the camera app open you don't hear it. One of the lens uses electromagnets for stabilization, without the camera app open the lens is moving around since there is no power going to the magnets.

The snapdragons have better rattling. ??
I have had my Note 20 ultra for 2 days and only this afternoon have I noticed this very loud rattle. I swear 100% that it wasn't there before. It also happens that this afternoon was the first time I tried wirelessly charging my phone. Is it possible that the wireless charger has somehow messed with the magnets that control the lens module?! I'm really annoyed and might send it back.

It's totally unacceptable for a 1399 device. Return it until you get a good one. By which time the note 21 ultra will be out. ?? Because they are all like that. I've had three different regional variants of the Note 20 Ultras, all same.
