What can be done with my UK MZ601 nowadays - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an old Xoom MZ601 with 3G and is running 4.0.4. and according to the tablet she is bang up to date  .
So i have come here to see what i can do to her to bring up to date a wee bit more, but it's not looking.
I have seen a few ROM but most seem to be missing the files to root or flash let alone the ROM image itself, can anyone shed some light for me on what is the best route for me i only use the tab for a wee bit of surfing/emails and the odd movie now and then.

I found the OmniRom 4.4.4 to be a bit slow, even overclocked....
You could put the US stock firmware on there to get it up to 4.1.2 perhaps?
I quite like the UK 4.0.4 as YouTube is nice and smooth but it does struggle to load newer software (Mobdro would be nice).

Hi thanks for the reply, i wanted to bring it further up to date i know lollipop will go on but all the links for rom/software/tools seem to be down so hard to move forward.

Been looking myself for something light weight to run on my old Xoom. It's to old now though and I can't find any links to re set it back to the original system , but I think even that won't help.

Well that was strange. After starting it up after 12 months it tried to update Google and failed now it just hangs at boot saying Starting Fastboot and nothing else. Guess it's throw in the bin time.

Jellybean ROM?

So is anyone working on a Jellybean ROM for the Viewsonic g-tablet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29584976&postcount=4
This was a response I got to my ranting about viewsonic developers STILL releasing FROYO updates three months (JAN 2012) after ICS source code was available. So, GB, honycomb,ICS,JEllybean from viewsonic? PROBABLY NOT! it seems they will keep paying their developers (or whoever the hell TapnTp is) to keep trying to stabilize their idea of frozen yogurt while the rest of the world keeps turning. what is my worthless point? As long as its possible the gtab will keep getting updated by those who have the skills and the tenacity, but not officially ever. I am currently working on a camera solution involving a webcam, which is the only thing not really working on ICS, and will continue to be a problem with any future jellybean rom. SO, if you are patient, you will get your wish.
Jellybean is now live on the other site. It will be a week or 2 then it will be posted over here. Get it while it's hot
What 'other site'?

Pardon, been gone a long time, but what other site is it on?
I dont want to make the devs mad, but if you google "slate g tablet" you will find your answer.

I have been searching high and low for a tread that you are on to say Damn good job guys. The only thing that I see for a request is adding ROM Toolbox lte to it. More simplifyed options to modify settings to see what works better.
By the way guys just go straight to the DRH website or use the DRH app to download the Jelly Bean ROM. Make sure that you follow instructions to the letter or else it will not load up correctly.

Just installed the teamdrh version of Jelly Bean, really quite nice! Instructions here.
Gtablet Vs Kindle Fire HD
I am surprised to see that ICS has not reached to its stable version yet and all the dev are already working on Jelly bean !
What is going to happen with ICS beta? Are users being forced to switch to Jelly bean? I am just frustrated because, the ICS is being slow,
I am lucky to find a solution by rajeevvp that made it more responsive but I wonder how long will it last?
And my last question to all Guru's , where do our Gtablet stand compare to Kindle fire HD? in terms of its hardware power.
Thanks.

JB from ICS is like gingerbread from froyo. It is not a major update or change. It does have project butter however, and for me JB uses less RAM on boot. so no one is forced to do anything. We are all happy to make this change.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I seem to get a boot loop no matter what I do. I am always able to flash back to stock 1.2 tnt (ouch). I had been running Vegan Tab Ginger for about a year. I read a post from Fosser2 taking me through the process of starting from 1.1 thru 1.2 then trying the whole JB flash. No Go
Always either boot loops to birds or black. Anyway, I read where Bishop posted another fix from Rajeevvp where you flash a fixed Kernal, but that one I have a problem wrapping my head around. Does someone have this Kernal already in Zip?? I would try this, but my kernal editing blows.
I have also tried ICS with the same results. Yes...I have used both the setups with either 250mb for ICS, and the larger for JB.
Please Help

Some tablets have sandisk NAND and have few problems. Other gtabs have Samsung NAND and they have lots of problems. Some people who cannot flash are able to with bloader 1.1. bootloader doesnt matter with JB so go ahead and try from 11 and let us know results. There are threads on using 1.1 so search for them, I will too.
Cant really figure out how to get the 1.1 bootloader to work either if I am doing it right, it is not working either. Might be the kernal issue someone else mentioned. I will try again with what I believe is the 1.1 bootloader, but I could find no NVflash to it specifically so I am unsure.
Haven't played with my GTablet in a long time.
I had Brilliant Corners on it.
Just updated it to black jelly, looks good so far,

You can try a teamdrh ICS rom or one of Nobe's JB roms, smooth or black. DRH jelly bean may be too big. still may not work, but start here:

Has anyone overcome the three birds issue yet. I really want to use my gtablet for some of my online training courses i'm doing but it will not work on flashback (honeycomb). I havent been able to install anything past flashback.
I was running Team DRH's ICS ROM which was good, then switched to their JB ROM which had some hiccups and slow downs but was manageable, but I've got to say nobe's Smooth Bean ROM is by far the best that I have run on my tab. Snappy and haven't had any issues yet. Definitely worth a look for anyone wanting to update to JB.
Suggest you try Smooth Bean over in Dev forum

I was on Flashback 10 for probably a year, reading, watching the development of other ROMS include ICS and JB. I just recently went from Flashback 10.1 to Smooth Bean. Just follow the instructions over in the dev forum. Pretty straight forward. You could also look up Ray Waldo's nflash instructions. So far no big issues, seems to be very fast, I like Opera Mobile so flash doesn't work or I haven't gotten it to work. Smooth Bean comes with Chrome. Flash does work somewhat with the default browser but with Opera or firefox I haven't had any luck yet.
Here is the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900562
The Nova launcher take a little getting used to so I tried could others, Lightening, Holo, there are several you could try.
Good luck, holler if u have more questions

While I would love for it to be as simple as reading the directions and following, i have done that maybe 50 times with teamdrh as well as smooth and black bean. Same thing every time. It's an issue that my hardware is slightly different than your hardware.

When I went from Flashback to SmoothBean it took a couple tries to get it right and I thought I followed the directions given. I didnt understand why exactly they wanted 4096/0 partition and it wasn't explained so I tried it also with 2048/0 which I used for Flashback but still had issues. I tried again with 4096/0 and it worked. My experience testing and using smoothbean too is I think Chrome is somewhat unstable at times and hangs or takes long time to respond like it could be maxing out cpu or something. I dont really think its neccessarily related to flash. I like opera mobile and am disappointed flash doesnt wrk with it. I tried using firefox and overridding the useragent and almost got flash to work some but it then errored out. Also read where some had tired using backup versions of flash and opera and thought some haf gotten it to work. This still is lot faster than flashback was so thats nice. I was on bootloader 2 version when I flashed.

New owner - Couple questions

Ok, you may have seen me asking questions about the Note in the last couple days.. and today I ventured out and actually bought one
A grey 16gb wi-fi model.
So now, I have a couple of questions I wanted to ask before I started installing lots of apps onto this thing!
First off, I have been looking into the JB stuff, which is one of the main reasons I wanted the Note. It seems that this is not out in the UK yet (or anywhere except Germany?) but there are ways to root the Note and install it...
Except it seems these (and every other ROM) are all designed for only the 8000 model? Which *I believe* is the wifi+3G model...
1 - So does this mean I cant use many custom roms? As they seem to be designed for the 8000? or is this irrelevent?
(I did find this thread about it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982821 except it seems that the JB install makes the battery drain around 3 hours quicker than it should? OR is this standard for jellybean? (seems strange)
2 - Alternatively, is it recommended just to wait for the official JB release. Seems its expected any day now, though who knows when that would be in reality.
3 - Something I was curious about... has any of the custom roms managed to keep the samsung ability to have multiview/dualview etc? Or do they just revert you to a customised version of standard Android?
4 - Anything that its recommended I do first, or install first, before I get going? Full battery charge would seem an idea, though I think I need to drain the battery first... Been a long time since my iPad was new, cant remember the right ways to do things anymore.

1) There are usually tweaks that allow you to use the ROM, even if your device isn't the 8000. Keep in mind that those roms have telephony services, and will be looking for a 3G signal (unless disabled).
2) If you are staying stock I recommend waiting. If not, flash CM10. It's lovely!
3) It depends on if it is stock based or AOSP/CM based. Stock based roms retain all of the original functionality, but adds speed, animation, theme, and other misc tweaks. AOSP based roms lose all of the Samsung Touchwiz specific functionality (Multi-window, S apps), but give you a pure android experience and look. Of course, CM also has a cool theme chooser!
4) I believe you should charge it first, but others will correct me if I am mistaken
Enjoy your awesome new Note!

1) Its nice that I have the options to play with it then, I'm sure there are ways to disable the 3G search. I was tempted to get it, but it didnt seem worth the extra £100+ (I got my note on an offer)
2) I assume I can flash CM10 while I wait, and return to stock when it is released? I'm only used to iOS jailbreaking, where you can always return to stock easily... I'd assumed this would work in a similar way?
3) It would be a shame to lose out on the samsung stuff... I'm not hooked on touchWiz or anything, but the multi-window stuff in the new JB update looked pretty snazzy. Of course in a years time I may change to pure android roms, if only to keep updated (I expect samsung will stop making their own updates soon enough)
4) I plugged it in briefly, saw it already had half a charge, and so unplugged it ... I cant remember if I should charge it to full first, then discharge it to 0%... or run it flat then charge it to full. Or if it makes no difference at all. Curse you technology!!
edit:
5) Any recommended apps? I assume I can chuck on AVG or similar, is there anything specific I should use for backups etc?
All Android devices seem to have a real problem if you truly run the battery down to 0. I would say, get it close, but not to the point of dying.
As far as the German JB ROM, there's a patch to disable the phone stuff. I'm running it on a WiFi only 8013 and it's fine. Just read everything you can. Read the threads from the first page to the last.
Frankly, I've always been a custom ROM kind of guy. But the multi-view stuff is just so awesome, especially the JB version, that I'm sticking with stock. Changed the launcher, but sticking with stock.

Thanks for this. As it is getting late already, and I have work tomorrow, I may just stick to the ICS for now and get a couple basic apps and have a play around. You never know, the update may turn up!
I would just go for the JB one tonight, but I will need to find a step-by-step guide to help me, as I only have experience with the iOS jailbreaking process.

It was better with ICS. But it's still pretty good. Last week I watched 4½ hours of video and still had about 52% battery life left. It seems like every version of Android they come out with gets slightly worse with regards to battery life. But in this case I think the extras that JB adds makes it a worthwhile tradeoff. In JB the difference seems to come from the addition of Google Now. I'm tempted to turn it off since I really don't use it other than to shut up iPhone users
After some research, it seems rooting is even more complicated than I first thought... because of the "binary counter" that samsung now has on their devices.
It seems that you can reset this counter, but I think it would only be sensible to road-test the tablet as stock first, in case it has any obvious faults that need to be sorted under warranty...
Although I do hate being sensible.
Same. I usually stay stock/un-rooted for about a month.. or two.. then I can't help it and just want to root and do other stuff. But for now, I have all that I really need for my Note at the moment without needing to root.

hahaha, I felt the same way. I actually bought mine about a week before the Nexus 10 official announcement. I wanted to wait to make a decision on whether to keep the Note or send it back and get the Nexus 10. I was going to wait to root until I heard the full details and made the decision.
I was rooted about 2 hours after I took it home
I hope your resolve lasts longer than mine did.
I rooted immediately, I have SG3 & 2, and I still have the galaxy 10.1 running a jb Rom. Guess I should of played with stock a little more, but really wanna see how the development is.

I'd be happy with stock (for a while at least), if the current stock was the jellybean update lol.
I will attempt to keep myself entertained with the differences between my old iPad1 and this fancy new tablet, and hope that distracts me until samsung release the UK JB.
Hope its soon!
Strange how Germany got it first... and as far as I know is the only place to get it? and that was 3 weeks ago now. Odd.
Apparently you got your wish... JB for UK dropped today, unfortunately for all you guys with wifi only, you seem to be the redheaded freckle faced kid in the shade that can't come out to play because its for the 3g model only again....
Personally, I'd root that sucker and try the new JB update.... You won't be disappointed....
Well I have a 3G model but I am from India so no update yet for me so kind of sucks

Yeh, I was initially tempted by the 3G model... But it would have been over £100 more expensive, plus a monthly subscription for data, and just isn't worth it.
Although its frustrating that Samsung will probably now wait another month before updating the wifi model... I don't think Germany even has it yet?
Couldn't you buy it outright? Then its up to you to either buy a plan, prepaid sim or use as a wifi model.... I personally prefer to get the 3g model simply because there may come a time when I need to use it.
I have a few 3g tablets, note 10.1, galaxy tab 7" and Acer Iconia A501.... Not all of these have sim cards but the potential is there if needed....

Well yes, but thats the point I was making... to buy it outright would have cost me an extra £100, and I simply dont have that much money to throw away.
If I was going to make a lot of use out of it, then fine... but I doubt I will. If I need internet on the move, I have my GalaxyS2,
Or, if for some reason I need internet on the move *specifically* on my tablet... I have my GalaxyS2 and tethering.
Saving myself over £100 means... well that £100 has bought me a really nice case, a 64GB microSD card, and a 4-in-1 adaptor for using USB/miniUSB/SD cards with the Note. And I still have £30 left over!
More than worth it, in my book. Just a shame we have t wait for the darned JB update so I can actually use the 64gb stick!

Worth the upgrade?

I am looking to upgrade from my HP TouchPad running CM10 and am considering buying an Infinity soon as I really like it over the N10 because of the dock. I am however concerned regarding all the lag and I/O comments I read. IMy HP TouchPad running CM10 and primarily it is used when I travel and while watching TV to surf the web and answer emails rather than use my large laptop. I am able to have 8-10 tabs in the stock browser open at a time without really seeing much of an issue. Will this be something I am able to still do with the Infinity or will it cause the browser to constantly crash? I do not play games hardly at all on it and will sometimes watch divx videos while traveling as well. My main worry is about the web browsing experience compared to what I am using now. I hope it will be as good or better so hopefully someone can answer that for me.
Another thing I use a lot is Eye-Fi to transfer all my pictures from my camera to my tablet to look when I am not home. Would transferring large 10MP files to it be an issue? They go pretty fast right now when I transfer them to my Galaxy Nexus.

I can't help you with that Eye-Fi question,
but I can try to answer your upgrade-related question
Anyway, I think that as long as you're experienced in flashing custom roms (in your case, I am sure you are, looking at the Rom you are running ) the I/O issue is no issue at all and most (if not all) lag is gone after installing CleanRom Inheritance.
It really boosts your device, without having to sacrifice battery life!
On top of that, it has also improved video/streaming playback drastically, making this device as top-tier as Asus claimed it is

+1. Also disable animation, makes you think you have the fastest tablet in the world!! super snappy!
I'll agree with the above!
There's quite a following going here.
This is a ROM flashers tablet IMO.
For myself I gave up on the OTA's from the manufacturer and started going the route of custom ROMs.
Been extremely happy with the work done in development.
Hope to see you join on!
Ok good to know. I assume then though I will be disappointed until I flash I custom ROM to it then? Will I most likely get a version that I can unlock it with NVFlash out of the box as long as I don't do the updates and unlock/root/flash it right away?
Also any specific reason for CleanROM over CM?

I would say you may not necessarily be displeased with JellyBean in stock form.
A great number of users are more than happy with this tab in it's pure Android state.

Yes
I will state that you will be able to bring home an ICS 4.03 version with the .26 firmware.
True don't allow OTA updating until you weave thru the NVFlash process.
I wasn't able to do NVFlash because of updating then finding out about it afterward.
Good luck if you decide to leap!
Alright went to Best Buy last night and played with the Infinity for about 30min. It definitely seemed pretty slow compared to my touchpad running CM and it didn't even want to load 3-4 webpages at a time. I did not however get the wait/close pop up at all. The screen was amazing (one major reason for wanting to upgrade, 1024x768 just isn't cutting it anymore) and the keyboard is a lot better to type on than what a lot of people seem to say. It didn't seem overly small to me.

Yes
I will state that you will be able to bring home an ICS 4.03 version with the .26 firmware.
True don't allow OTA updating until you weave thru the NVFlash process.
I wasn't able to do NVFlash because of updating then finding out about it afterward.
Good luck if you decide to leap!

That is great to know I will be able to do the NVFlash though as that is really the only way I would want to root and flash this tablet. I like the fact it can't be bricked doing that.
Is it correct that I have read once I have the blobs from doing NVFlash I can manually upgrade to the most current firmware and NVFlash will still work? If so it seems I will actually finally have made up my mind of what tablet to get.

Also any specific reason for CleanROM over CM?

Yes, I think it's overal nicer and faster with CR.
Not to mention that it has a bit better implementation with the keyboard dock (if you have decided to buy that). You also get amazing support from the developer of CleanRom and the Rom Installer gives you the ability to choose what you want and what tweaks you like. Therefore, it's really nice to use it.
Besides, sometimes it's handy having the 3 'performance' modes and IPS+ toggle in the notification bar. Asus did some things right, so we should give them credit for that

[Q] Tab 2 7.0 P3110 Pre Root Question

Hi,
I just got a free tab 2 with a Samsung camera, and have given it to my son to use, playing Agent Dash it often lags to the point where its not really playable, but sometimes its fine which is bizzare, anyway I'm considering rooting it and putting a custom rom on which I'm guessing will help???
Question is If I put some rom on and custom recovery etc can I go back to a stock Samsung recovery and firmware and reset the flash counter should I wish?
Thanks in advance
edit. Also are there any roms which look similar to the Samsung stock one with touchwiz that would perform better?

I"d say you won't get any improvement. Sounds like a app problem. I"d send a note to the developer. There is little difference if any in performance between CM based JB and Stock. Are you on the stock JB ? There is a difference in performance between ICS and JB.
And no , there is no stock ROM that performs better. IN general I'd say the tab performs very well. and problems you see are usually poorly written apps.of which there are a lot

Yeah updated it as soon as I got it yesterday its on P3110XXCLK7, I had another one earlier in the week but that came and the box was smashed up so got it swapped, I only briefly tried that one but it seemed to play fine, I restored this one last night thinking that might help but its come back, I was playing it myself a few hours ago for about 20-30 mins and it was fine, put it on charge and then took it off charge and tried again and it started to lag big time.
If I flash the stock rom via odin over the top it wont affect the flash counter will it? Maybe something got buggered during the update? Having said that it only appears to be this app
I've put a clip of it on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K988t6tgNUM

Falshing stock ROM by Odin will not affect the counter.
I never experience lag on this tablet, but certain apps will mess up any device. If you are having a problem with only one app , check with the developer. if you are not sure what's slowing things down try a cpu analyzer and see what is eating your resources up..
A lot of games now access the web during the game to provide interactive play or offer to sell you things, that can often slow things down.

Games often use lots of hacks to try to get certain things to work, and the hacks get hammered sometimes when the Android version changes.
seems clearing the app cache helps but it doesnt seem to last too long

Best ROM for running kids' games?

Hi everyone,
Simply put, what's the best ROM to use specifically for a 7 year old who wants to play games like the Lego games, Minecraft PE, and that awful bloons TD battles?
Everything was fine until my child's p5113 updated itself automatically to 4.2.2. Immediately after, it became unstable, frequently crashing and rebooting itself. Oddly, my other, identical p5113 used by my other child had no issues with the 4.2.2 update. Maybe a bad download flash? After some months of hearing complaints of the tablet freezing/rebooting in the middle of my kid's games, I decided to flash a custom ROM and get rid of all the bloat.
I used a May build of Omnirom which was much more stable, but I grabbed it at a time when it was having issues with disabling the keyboard (it assumed a hardware keyboard was present). So after every reboot I had to go into settings and fix it, not useful for a 7 year old child. But we made do through spring and summer until things started getting unstable again.
I installed Slimkat yesterday, and it looks beautiful, but the LEGO Speedorz game installs but dies right before the racing action starts. Bloons battles downloads but gives an error during installation. Sigh.
Cyanogenmod gives the same problems with the games, as does the latest Omnirom.
I don't care at all about fancy stuff, I just want something basic t hat actually works for my kid's games. I've installed several ROMs over the past day... several wouldn't even boot. I'm tempted to get an account at SAMMOBILE to get the stock firmware and flash that, but stock is so bloaty I imagine that's a source of problems.
I suspect I may have an actual board problem with the tablet, but before selling this one for parts and buying a new one, I'd like to exhaust all possibilities. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Marc
My daughter has Stock 4.1.1 (P5113UECLK7) rooted with the Next kernel and it seems to be ok. She runs a Ton of games daily with Minecraft being number 1. I have the file but am unable to upload it here so I would have to send it thru an email link. I have various others as well....Pure Vanilla 4.2.2, Brolees 4.2.2 and Shakatus newest Zapblaster v2.3 which is 4.2.2 Thats a really zippy ROM and he just updated it for the last time so its pretty new and very good. You can get that one on xda but I believe that all the lenks are down for the rest I mentioned. But I do have them just in case.

Excellent. Thanks. If you could PM me a link to Pure Vanilla that would be great. I was looking for that one yesterday and the links were dead. :crying: The Shakatu mostly stock/rooted one didn't boot for me for some reason. But Ripper ROM based on it seems to be working well. Would love pure vanilla as a backup. I will also look into the zapblaster one.
Thanks so much for replying!
Marc
Sammobile and samsung-updates both have that file. Sammobile doesn't send me any emails even though I have an account so that isn't really a problem. The accounts are free. If you root it, you can remove the extra system apps. You could also flash the next kernel for some extra speed and overclock.
