I have been spending a lot of time reading about Android security in this forum and realize I've made mistakes.
With my new nexus 5, I have recently corrected most of them. With my last phone, I'm sad to say that I was asking to give my data away.
Here are my new practices...
1. After rooting, I used Boot Unlocker to re-lock the bootloader.
2. I am running the stock recovery and when I need to flash something or nandroid backup, I flash TWRP temporary.
3. I use Tasker to turn USB Debugging off when I disconnect from my home network.
4. I do not share passwords between apps/websites. I use LastPass to generate unique, random, strong passwords.
5. I use 2 step verification whenever possible.
6. I'm in physical control of my phone whenever I leave my house.
But... I have not paid attention to the permissions my apps ask for. Is there an app that shows a permission, and then list the apps that have that permission? I do have Lookout installed, and it's sister app Add Network Detector and all scan OK, but I'm looking for more.
Also, if anyone has any other recommendations, I'd like to hear them. I'm not a fanatic, but in this age of identity theft, I do want to have my eyes open.

Thank you. I don't want to get into exposed framework, and from what I read, opendroid does not work on stock ROM. I flashed omnirom which has it all built in.

I can only second that. If you refuse to use Xprivacy through installing Xposed Framework first, you'll NEVER get to the core of all settings with any other app. Asking for a "best way to review permissions" here but refusing to do something to get there is like not wanting to die but refusing to eat. In short: Get XPrivacy. You won't regret it, believe me.

I didn't want to get into exposed framework because the reason I own a nexus is to flash custom roms.
On my GN, I used AOKP.
But, you have peaked my interest, and I'm going to give it a try. I was enjoying running ART, which is not available in OmniROM yet. Can you use it with exposed modules?

Well, as far as I know, the main developer @M66B is working hard on it to get it to that state. To make sure and get all the latest and greatest information of support, have a peak at the Official Xprivacy Thread. Also, you should bookmark the Xprivacy Changelog to always know what was changed. And to be honest: I'm happy you like AOKP as much as I do. Always keep it gangsta.

First of all, please don't talk to me like a kid. Even if your english might not be that good, try to keep it in straight forward language and as simple as possible. In order to use Xprivacy, you NEED the Xposed Framework. Both of them are an awesome invention, I even bought Xprivacy. Now, what is your exact problem with the Xposed Framework? You want to control your apps permissions? Well, having the Xposed Framework installed and adding Xprivacy to it, is the BEST and EASIEST way there is. Point made. If you refuse to because your ego is too big to make a NANDROID first and try it out, then please don't bother people with asking any longer. You can probably feel the stress in my "voice"? Your behavior is uncool.

OK. I gave xposed a try and went back to omnirom. Omni has some pretty nice security features right now, but when their new google-free dialer and some of the other mods they are planning come out, it will be the way to go for the security/privacy minded android user like me.
what about luckypatcher to remove permission ? is this apk reliable ?
Let me start by saying I removed the pr.adapt apk that requested root permission. So anyways I received a notification on the my t-mo app about device health, wanted to check out what it said. It said battery was average, performance was good, and when I clicked on battery there was a report for GPS, Root, and Wifi. Says device is rooted. Soooo idk what that will affect for me but heads up for everyone else.
I disabled it and denied root permissions.

T-Mobile can see just about every aspect of your device. What apps you have installed, how much storage you have available, whether or not you're rooted. My line is on an employee account, my close friend works for them. You'd be surprised what info your device sends them even if you don't want it to.
It's funny, I called tech support yesterday, since the V10 is ****ting the bed here (GPS is a mile or so off, tons of dropped calls, speakerphone barely works) and the TWO techs I spoke to were like "Yeah, this is why I have the G4. I installed Cyanogenmod, and the phone is just perfect!"
I just played dumb and was like "Root? Like on plants? Hurrrrrrrr"
I've had one other application able to tell that I've rooted my phone. It is a bank app that now refuses to work because of the device being rooted .

Which bank?
Tmo employee here. Just a heads up, if you want to turn off the data your device sends to T-Mobile, you have to go into the settings on the my T-Mobile app and turn off diagnostics and send data to T-Mobile. Usually everyone blindly agrees to in durring the initial device set up.

If you have Xposed, install Rootcloak for Lollipop and add your app to it, problem solved.
thanks I'll give that a try.
Yes TMobile knows.....
what I know and what (im learning) w 2 rooted devices and some personal observation.
The PR apk is a battery killer. It forever runs in the background always asking for root. And they know when you root (if one of the three suspected apps isn't blocked from learning it. ) The device troubleshooting software is pretty amazing they can uninstall apps see what's. Installed. And the memory being used ect.) Even remote support w permission from user.
Its not only my Tmo app and the PR apk. LOOKOUT snitches on you too I think. (Pretty sure there is a partnership between lookout and the uncarrier)
Wifi calling and the hotspot app are both integrated into the system wifi apk (which I theorize to be how they monitor users trying to hide that ) (and one other method I know of companies finding out who is burning thru hotspot data.)
VoLTE drains battery. The call quality IS great but not worth what I see battery reduce to. (I suspect wifi calling also carries other secrets)

Never really use the LOOKOUT app other than to scan apps I download outside of the Play Store... why do you suspect this app of being a snitch?
You can use Disable Bloatware from the app store to disable pradapt as well. No root needed.
I'm confused on the or.adapt all...is this part of the tmo app? I really want to get rid of that fricken app, especially before I consider rooting.

it''s preinstalled on all their devices. except apple...not to mention tmobile finances their phones to 90 percent of their consumers....Personally i think they would have more than just the apps w their name on it to keep up with whats happening with devices the customer doesn't own yet. also one of the insurance packages offered by tmo includes a subscription to lookout.

Its an app that always asks for root it's safe to remove will probably require a. Reboot you will get toast about it not responding. After reboot they go away. I don't have it all figured out yet this is a seperate apk from the Tmo apps.it will ask for root as soon as you boot and are rooted deny it until you freeze or remove.

So does anyone have any clue how to get the unlimited hotspot going on this? Cause it would be useful for YouTube on my laptop while stuck on a train
I've been rooting phones since the days of the htc hero. Recently, I've noticed with Marshmallow and Nougat even more so, there is less reason to root other than small issues such as uninstalling unwanted system apps and installing apps such as titanium backup. However with rooting comes the issue of making it difficult to update the software when an official update comes through, other than going through a hurdle.
Do you guys think that now with Nougat, does the cons of rooting outweigh the pros of rooting?
I would like to root if only to theme the device (not a fan of Huawei's theme engine)
To be honest I don't think that's necessary

The biggest plus of root is the adblocker....
I only use root for titanium backup and for a adblocker. So yeah, that would be a reason for me. Also removing bloatware is nice.

And don't forget VIPER4Android.

not sure if it will let me just google adguard
https://adguard.com/en/welcome.html
I have rooted most of my devices but I will keep this one stock for a while. I just do need to root but I get that some people do.
I used to root all my phones up until about a year ago. I miss Titanium Backup but these days many apps use cloud backup for settings and Google makes a good job of restoring apps quickly in the background.
The only other main reason I rooted was ad blocking. But then I discovered Adguard. I paid for a lifetime subscription (really cheap actually) and it works pretty much flawlessly.
With Nougat (and Marshmallow) the system and functions are so much more efficient and features are now built in that used to require root. And now it's just too much hassle, along with a risk of bricking, voiding warranty, not getting updates and causing problems with some apps (like banking or VOD) So rooting for little gain is something I just don't bother with now.

I agree with you. I haven't rooted my phone for the first time, and amazingly haven't felt the need to do so. The Mate 9 is a great phone.
All the problems I'm reading about on this site come from people who have rooted their phones, (a potential Pandora's box) and it's not a great advert for Huawei.

You can't use a rooted phone on ANY banking App. Nor any App that guarantees secure transactions.
Infact, of you do not use fingerprint (or any other secure mode on the Mate 9 i.e. Password etc), it will refuse to permit secure app transactions and send you to the desktop sites on your browser.

Some banking apps e.g. Barclays (OKish) or DKB (refuse) make a fuss after root detection.
On Marshmallow I did overcome this via Xposed module "Rootcloak".
But generally I found these apps of the banks I am doing business with a royal PITA ergonomics and functionality wise.
On the "compromised" devices I use their normal web presence (not the castrated mobile view) to do what I want to.
Talking to customer service of one affected bank about why they block the apps when I happily can use the browser. They answered:
"We know. But root detection made it in the spec cheet for the programmers and our compliance guys can sleep better and we have already paid for that "funtionality" in the app. We do not actively recommend your "solution"."

On that note if your saying rootcloak does work then I'm gonna have to atleast wait until xposed becomes available for Nougat correct?
(If I want to specifically use Existanz ROM nougat and not marshmallow.)
Otherwise I will need to bite the bullet and resort to using website banking rather then through apps.

I used to root my devices for years. Rooting a device allows installing apps which need root, and installing custom roms that allow more settings and tuning. Nowadays many settings are included stock, and most apps which need root have a similar app which doesn't. Since I bought my NEX, I didn't miss anything. So my question is: what's the need of rooting your nex?

Well since you ask..
1, System-wide ad-blocking.. Yes browsers these days come with ad-blocking support. But have you been able to get rid of the stubborn ads that pop up in other apps. I know ads support the developer. But sometimes, they overdo it.
2, Substratum theming support (without Andromeda).. The Vivo's themes are garbage. Substratum could open up a world of opportunities.
3, Uninstalling junk system apps. Yes there is a method by which we can "uninstall" without root. But that's not a proper uninstall cuz the app is still in the phone and simply gets disabled for the user.
4. Making build.prop changes to add subtle tweaks that could improve usability in areas where the phone maker doesn't give a damn.
5. ViperFX..
So on.. And so forth.. Yes we can live without these things. But having them is definitely an improvement in smartphone usage... Especially with a beautiful beast like the Nex.
Cheers

Meh!
1. My adblocking is system wide through my always-on vpn Windscribe and works better than most adblockers.
2. I don't use themes but I'd like to have a full dark mode.
3. I'm not bothered by them.
4. Not interested.
5. I can live without Viper.
I've never really been a modder but have used root to add functionality. These days the granular controls of miui, emui and funtouch take care of most of my needs.
Meh? I was voicing my opinion. Not giving you recommendations. If you are fine without them, good on you mate.

It's my fault and I should have done due diligence, I am never buying another Chinese phone if I'm not sure it isnt rooatable.
No powerful adblocking
No powerful privacy apps/controls
Chinese malware/bloatware preinstalled that I can't remove. Some that run 24/7 and cant be locally uninstalled without breaking the phone. Drain battery life etc
Phone is way less customizable
I will never buy a Vivo phone again, its a shame because the NEX is awesome. Waiting on S10 release, I am getting rid of the NEX.
