Curious as to what setting setup people are using to save battery

Facebook/Messenger app are battery huggers for real! I use it through Chrome and added shortcut to home screen and works like a charm.

I'm not really sure what is going on with my battery ; I have been using the debloater script but still have just over 10hrs battery.

So I've never used Package Disabler before so I downloaded it. When it verifies the license, I get a popup about Knox. I am not a noob to rooting, but I've always used TitaniumBackup to do the job for freezing or uninstalling bloat. When the Knox agreement popped up, I did get a little worried cause I don't want to trip Knox or anything just yet. If I decline the agreement, it bring me back to Package Disabler and says I have to accept the agreement.
Is this so??????????

Samsung and the carriers are watching! But yeah you have to agree to that to use the app. It allows the app to be installed as a system app and perform the disabling functions.

Ok thanks. My last Samsung device was an S4 so yeah.... That didn't have Knox until it was introduced in OTA Updates later on. By then I already rooted and did whatever I wanted cause the phone was free, and I didn't care if I tripped Knox. But I'm paying for this phone so I'm being a little more cautious.

I haven't noticed any I'll effects so pretty sure the app isn't tripping knox. Still get ota updates (as long as you enable all and reboot) and still can use Samsung pay.

Here's my tricks for today's performance as seen in screenshots below... my device is rooted, but you can do all these things without root...
1) Use powersaving mode, you don't really notice much performance hit for the things I do on my phone
2) Use Disable Application app from play store to disable well over 100 background apps ( use package disabler pro if not rooted, it's a better interface)
3) Use Smart Manager app to manage ram and limit background apps running
4) Greenify all apps other than launcher and my music apps that I'm streaming music with
5) Manage screen brightness and not keep it overly bright when not needed
As you can see, I managed to get over 7 hours of Screen On Time, 3 hours of streaming music... i also did plenty of emails, web surfing, xda forums, texting, phone calls... it's not like the phone barely got used... I used it a ton!

Thoughts on rooting this bad boy

I just got a note 5 on sprint and I love it, but I'm really not sure if I want to root. Every device since I got my Samsung moment has been rooted (htc evo 4g lte, s3,s5 for the day I had it, and then the g3). Anyways, my question is losing Samsung pay worth rooting? I mean I love all the things I can do with root, I just wanna know what everyone's opinion is, so I can weigh pros and cons of rooting.

There is a thread on it here over in the general forum.
You need to use ODIN to flash TWRP and then flash a custom kernel, or just flash TWRP with ODIN and then flash a custom ROM. They are already rooted.

How often does anyone go out without your keys and wallet and drivers license. I mean really, I used it a bunch when I went jogging, but it's not 100%. The first time it didn't work I luckily had my wallet and my regular card swiped just fine. I rooted my phone the second I got home that day.

It's totally up to the user to root if need be. I, however, chose not to root this phone only because everything I needed root for I can accomplish without it whilst keeping Samsung Pay and Android Pay intact. I use the latter more than the previous so root is a no go for me based on that. However, I've tried Samsung Pay a few times and it worked with no issues. You just have to ask yourself what exactly do I need root for? These were my needs for root and the fixes I found to accomplish what I needed without rooting:
Camera Shutter Sound fix( Enforced Stream Silencer app)
Hotspot Mod( APN Settings mod. Need MSL # for this which can be gotten through Sprint Chat)
Ad Remover( AdGuard Premium App)
APK Backups/Restore( App Backup and Restore app)
System UI Backup( Smart Switch on PC)
Bloatware Removal/System App Disabler( Package Disabler Pro)
Add any app to MW( MW- Pen App Enabler Pro)
Themes( Samsung Theme Store)
These can all be achieved without root. More importantly, everything works as it should and when you need it to work without getting the dreaded FC and doing trial and error to fix it. If the Pros outweigh the Cons then do it. If not, don't root.
I honestly don't miss it. I have more time to spend with my family and not trying to find what a developer took out to make a feature of the phone work. I get updates on time without waiting for a rooted rom to be posted. I'm not trolling XDA or any other blog seeing when the next update is to whatever rom I'm using to see if hopefully the issues I had with the rom were addressed with the new build. Do I miss root? Sometimes. But ultimately I'm glad I didn't root. This was my choice. As I said, everyone is different. You have to do what works for you. I love that I have full functionality of my phone and confidence knowing if I try a feature it will work as advertised.

I stayed stock for exactly 4 weeks and used samsung pay a few times a day with 5 different credit cards. I've been rooted for the past 3 months and i do NOT miss samsung pay at all. I reap the benefits of root all day everyday because of the amazing ROM dev @tdunham and the amazing KERNEL dev @UpInTheAir.

No. I usually just remove the stuff I know about like Nascar, Ebay, etc. The system apps I disable are usually like the Calculator, Picasa maybe and a couple other things.

Basically want to know from users of ExistenZ ROM specifically? But anyone rooted there experience on this matter is kindly appreciated :good:
Are you successfully able to run your banking apps on the rooted custom ROM experience on our XZ?
Particular interest on UK banking apps if any users here.

Some banking apps e.g. Barclays (OKish) or DKB (refuse) make a fuss after root detection.
On Marshmallow I did overcome this via Xposed module "Rootcloak".
But generally I found these apps of the banks I am doing business with a royal PITA ergonomics and functionality wise.
On the "compromised" devices I use their normal web presence (not the castrated mobile view) to do what I want to.
Talking to customer service of one affected bank about why they block the apps when I happily can use the browser. They answered:
"We know. But root detection made it in the spec cheet for the programmers and our compliance guys can sleep better and we have already paid for that "funtionality" in the app. We do not actively recommend your "solution"."

I remember rootcloak from a while back but it didn't work for me back then.
On that note if your saying rootcloak does work then I'm gonna have to atleast wait until xposed becomes available for Nougat correct?
(If I want to specifically use Existanz ROM nougat and not marshmallow.)
Otherwise I will need to bite the bullet and resort to using website banking rather then through apps.

I would therefore assume UK banking apps will definitely not work. As they are extremely tight on there security especially with preventing users with root.

NatWest and Amex work fine. Barclays doesn't.

You can use magisk with the built in SuperSU and android pay works

i don't think i'm going to root my phone this time it has all the future and it freaking fast and blotware less , gonna give samsung apps a chance and use then for good . if you are going to root please give me some feedback on WHY ty.
i got myphone yesterday.

I will be rooting so I can use Viper4Android, AdAway and Titanium Backup

IMHO, the main purpose for rooting is to boost the device security and privacy: to stop google, facebook et al. from spying on you.

I will root mine too, so i can use AFWall+, ADBlock, Tasker and Titanium Backup

I've found that the best way to satisfy my rooting urges these days is to keep a stock Pixel handy and a Nexus 5x for rooting goodness. These other phones (be it Samsung, LG, HTC) I am now leaving completely stock and will enjoy them for what they are. Other than light debloating and an occasional launcher change, there just isn't the desire anymore to root these and ROM them up.
I'm on the T-Mobile JOD plan, and for those of you that also happen to be...it has come to light that T-Mobile doesn't have a way of tracking whether or not customers are using only 3 JOD's a year in their database. MEANING, you can theoretically jump into a new (or the same phone if you have issues w/ your current JOD phone) every 30 days if your heart desires. I jumped from the LG v20 to the dreaded iPhone 7plus within a 45 day timeframe while waiting on the s8+ release. I plan to hold onto it until the upcoming Note release, buttttttttt I guess it depends what else is released in the interim!

To think that you can stop Google or Facebook from spying on you with root is humorous, they don't care about you, unless you're in some terrorist group or something... There's a no-root adblocker for Samsung called Adhell, it works through modifying Knox, no VPNs, and works as well as any root adblocker. The S8 also has a built-in DAC that lets you modify sound settings like Viper

All I need is viper4android but I'm on tmobile and when I rooted my s7e it was never the same so with that being said my note 4 is rooted with all that I need for listening to loud tunes or podcasts for work... and I'll be keeping my s8+ unrooted because it's just too smooth and lag free for me at the moment hoping it doesn't crap out in a couple months....

The reason I was going to root was so I could force the phone into LTE only mode, but the 4G switcher app works and does that so now I don't really have a need for root!

Rooting mainly for full automation through tasker. Shell commands, GPS, etc needs root. Being able to do per apps settings for full screen, battery/performance, timeout and hw buttons.
I guess bixby button remapping would be another reason for root.
Except for this it looks like there's not that many more reasons to root anymore..:
Adhell and Adblock plugin for Sammy browser should take care of advertisemens and as sound settings and other functions in the ROM seems very good this year, so I'm not too bummed out if root doesn't happen.

Always prefer XDA and Root ftw!

I pretty much stopped flashing different roms when I got my note 4, not that I had a huge choice since root came late. But when I did flash a ton, it was just a stock debloated and tweaked one.
But my number one reason for root is ad blocking. I absolutely hate ads. So I really only want to root my new s8+ so I can run ad block and install xposed to get the YouTube adblocker.

How do all of you plan on rooting when the bootloader is locked?

An exploit has to be found. One can have root with a locked bootloader obviously.
Of course an unlocked bootloader allows us to flash recoveries, custom roms and other goodies.
I do miss Titanium.
And centered clock and custom icons.
Package disabler pro helps a lot.
I had to kill bixby. Hitting that button when trying to turn down the volume and having that interrupt me was really annoying.
I'd like to have that button dedicated to something.
But for now, it's a dummy.

try bixremap it launches bixby then a mili sec later opens google now , you just need to undisable bixby from package disabler first

I HAVE to have Viper. Android should buy V4a and have it as a stock feature on all their phones.

S7e boot was locked but we all rooted anyway different root from the norm tho....

Do you find you need root?

I used to be a crack flasher all the way back to the original SGN. It slowed down when I got the 5T. Only rooted the 6 but never did root the 6T but I did unlock the bootloader.
With the 7 Pro I feel no need to unlock the bootloader or even think about root. Is this just due to Android getting better or something else?

I was on the fence but ended up rooting mainly for the VPN-less adblocking.

Google Pay isn't what breaks it's Google play services that will block your card use. I update google pay the second it says there's an update and I never once had an issue with root and google or Samsung pay for that matter (Gear S3 Frontier)

Yeah definitely. I really need Xposed Edge for the gestures. I have assigned 12 functions amongst the four edges which works wonders on this already super fast phone.
Exi for Swiftkey, for far easier and quicker typing.
ChromePie, easier to access various options.
Minminguard, in-app ad blocking.
Adaway.
GravityBox, for finer tweaking of ROM.
Titanium Backup.

Have always rooted my phones since 2009, but this is the first where I haven't rooted (yet). Normally I'd root a new phone within 10 minutes after receiving it. But this phone pretty much has it all so no need to root (yet). Only thing I miss is a complete dark theme. OPs strategy with only theming about 70% of the interface is odd, but I hope that Android Q will fix that once it's officially released for this phone.

Same as you. Sometimes I rooted my new phones even before a complete boot cycle! But with the OP7P I guess I don't feel the need to do it.

Seems like it's installed the easiest and most seamless with root though.
Regardless, there are several other reasons I mentioned I use root for, so why not just install YouTube Vanced with root as well

I'm on the fence myself. I do miss Substratum, but afraid to lose Netflix HD permanently and i had issues with SPay not working on my Pixel 3 XL after rooting. Not sure what i want to do......

Been rooting my phones since my first Android and the OG Droid Motorola A855. I doubt you may find too many members here that will vote the last question of your poll, since this site has become THE place for those who want to root and ROM.
For me it's:

Ad Away
Renovate
and whatever other reason I feel like. I received my 7 Pro, charged the battery and the only reason I booted it to system was to get developers options and OK the oem unlocking. Didn't even sign it in on first boot.

I finally rooted a few days ago. Basic root is easy. EdXposed and gravity box and that kind of stuff you need to pay attention to a bit more unless you've done it before (which i have not)

Life begins after root! Google pay and Samsung pa works without issues on OP 7 Pro. Just hide Magisk from all google and Samsung apps (if using a Gear S3 like I am)

I find that I need it for my personal needs/wants due to Swift installer support and native call recording. Plus having TB to uninstall some system apps that I don't want/need is also a plus.

Personally, I don't need root do much. But I do need magisk and modules as well as magisk ROMs. Everything else is a plus.
