Enough of this nonsense, I say! (ROM development for us TracFone users!!) - Samsung Galaxy Core Prime Guides, News, & Discussi

I've seen many a ROM posting for other variants of this phone, all of which I'm sure are more popular. Let's face the facts, though, and that is, not all of us can afford or procure without hassle these 'mainstream' variants. I'm happy to say that, given an appropriate audience to serve, I'm willing to put in the time to make a ROM for the SM-S820L (TracFone) variant of the Galaxy Core Prime. If anyone is willing to help provide resources to make the building go faster should this actually go through, I'll be happy to list you as a contributor. The ROM will hopefully be a port of CyanogenMod. Thank you in advance if you should choose to help support this project!

Hey bro, I have a post on this section about the ROM I just tweaked for the SM-S820L. That is my first and only smartphone and yeah man I'm in!
I'm sending you a PM right now!:good:
Nevermind. I guess you dont accept PM's.
Well, I'll leave the ball in your court. PM me here on this site or shoot me an email at: [email protected]
I have another friend who knows a thing or 2 about coding and has the same model as I(SM-S820L). I know of some others at Android Area 51 who have blazed some trails with this Core Prime model already and may have some material for us to work with.

Samsung/XDA part2

I haven't forgot about you guys. Today we had a meeting with XDA owners via telephone. Were just getting everything ready before we make a huge announcement. I told you guys I'm NOT going to let you guys down. Just be a little patient.
Thanks

I'm not sure there are a lot of expectations here to be let down. We know that in most cases you probably wouldn't be able to offer us beta, or even alpha firmware and software to develop with or on. RC firmware and software would be just as much out of the question so we're down to what is already out, or something that is leaked by people friendly to the development communities that take the chance of getting in to a lot of trouble. So I don't really know what you have to offer yet. I am curious to find out, though.
Dear john, you have sparked a lot of interest, we are drooling at the mouth do you have any gingerbread for us, or dare I speak of honeycomb? ;-)

"IF" this where to happen it would be a good thing for both samsung and xda for the simple fact that it would help us make better mods for the samsung community and would allow samsung to release things that are more open to modding and customizations that all of us around here love and enjoy making (or in my case learning to make)...hope all goes well with this.
I am a dubious person and do not have expectations as I am still uncertain as to your intentions and more importantly you identity.
But if all is as you say I would take back to the powers that be, many are obviously unhappy with having to run outdated software in the form of the OS on what was at the time of purchase cutting edge hardware.
Give us a option. Give us a way to open the phone up and flash a AOSP option. A more Nexus-ish approach would be fantastic.
The Mainstream will have what they require in a stock configuration and we the ones that know what the potential of the device is can help you in pushing it to its limits.
Well I'm trying to get my post count up so I can comment in development. Anywho kudos to samsung.
Thanks again John, I'm excited and look forward to hearing your announcement!

Honeycomb is made for tablets so I don't think that really helps us. And I highly doubt Samsung is going to release Gingerbread directly to XDA if at all.

maybe samsung will use us for testing and maybe some tweaking...that would give us a chance to develop on it before its officially released and we would just plain out have it early, cause if you give the devs here like 2 weeks with just about anything it will be fully modded and running to its full potential!!!
props to xda devs!!!
Everyone please come over to this thread.

Hopefully their next approach works out better, they should have known better than to open a topic up to the entire forum
They should probably have moderator's from each device take questions from their users, then they could collaborate and get only the good questions answered. (and you wouldn't have to deal with trolls/flames/etc.)

I suppose the question *since we can't ask specifics* is....
What can you do to help us and or what tools can you provide to the DEVs to help us get every bit of Awesome out of the device that we can.
Put the ball in your court.
Glad THIS thread is still open...
(Does SamsungJohn know how forums work?!?)
ANYhoo... I'm a give 'em enough rope to hang themselves kinda guy and I've actually been recommending the Mesmerize & Fascinate to friends that need new phones based solely on the great XDA community and what they can get those phones to do using only a bread tie, three pennies, and a jar of Cheez Wiz. Kudos to the devs once again!
I had no delusions that Samsung was a great manufacturer... my TV and DVD/home theater unit have had their share of problems... and I was also aware of the OS update delays in other product lines before I got my phone so that wasn't a big surprise either. BUT, I got in on the free phone thing through USCC and (if I EVER get my $80 rebate) I'll still consider being a Mesmerize owner/user a WIN.
What I see here is a classic example of a company that has the OBVIOUS solution within their grasp and they are actively choosing to find an alternative to it that will provide them SHORT TERM monetary gains. They have set themselves up for failure and they have only themselves to blame. Here's a vocabulary lesson for SamsungJohn et al... crowdsourcing
Guys if you haven't read through it, that topic was closed by a moderator because it was an experiment that failed miserably. (because the general XDA population isn't very good at reading and following instruction, and it turned into a huge flamefest.)
John has been confirmed by several sources to be who he says he is (at least works for samsung) and is here working with the XDA administration to (in an organized way) swap feedback with the developing community (on all samsung products).
On a side note Supercurio has been in correspondence with Korean Samsung and has been also pushing for this very thing to happen, but from what I've read i'ts pure coincidence that John arrived when he did.
Anyway, sounds to me like we need to be patient as information IS coming as soon as they figure out the best way to go about this whole thing. This is how I've taken things from what I've read today, don't quote me....

In all fairness Crowdsourceing is what the whole AOSP is about. Android was and is developed to be Open Source. So if a company is reaching out to the community it can't be all bad.
I just think that for the most part a lot of us here are end users.
While I am sure that others like me want to, and strive to learn more, we simply will not be on a par with the current crop of DEVs as they progress as well.
I think the idea of a couple DEVs from each of the respective forums of the variations of the SGS platforms being in contact is a smart idea.
Dcows, Phidelt, and of course JT and many of the OPs in the Samsung Fascinate IRC channel would be obvious choices.
In fact a meeting of the minds in a channel of choice with only participants having voice would be nice as well.
I do understand and hope that SamsungJohn does know as well that most here are simply end users and just wanna know when we will get xxx or yyy ..
I will now go back to my corner get my Java Text out and see if I can learn, learn, learn....
If samsung really wants to get in good with the developement community, they would be wise to make it entirely official, and go to engadget or someone with a press release. If you want to gain our trust, give everyone the AOSP build.
Do I want sammy to be community-minded? Absolutely.
Am I going to trust one guy who says he works for our manufacturer? Well, let's get to the root of that. Do I trust the company who created out hardware? Not at all.

Yeah I frequent the irc with those guys and we're always willing to help people... I think a lot of people come to forums just to get help and information rather than to develop and theme and stuff like we do. It would probably be more beneficial for Samsungjohn to maybe set up a date on the irc and say like "I will be on from x time to y time" and then people can get on and ask questions and talk about things, and more of the power users who use the irc regularly will get a chance to maybe learn some stuff or help out Samsung.
It would also make it much easier to control, if things get out of hand then the OPs can simply kick or ban the culprits.

KitKat for HTC Thunderbolt

With Kitkat being ported to so many older devices because of the lowered system requirements, I figured its time we get one on the ThunderBolt. I by no means can do this on my own, so that is why I am starting this thread. I will try to reach out to as many devs as possible to get this going. Just a little about myself, Ive done basic ROM developement on a few devices, the most notable being the 2 generations of the Nexus 7. Over the past few months I have greatly expanded my knowledge and capabilities with android. The extent of my coding knowledge is basic Java, a little bit of C++, and arduino, which is why I need help for this. I see this as both a learning opportunity for me as well as a chance to participate in expanding the Thunderbolt dev community. I'm mainly looking for somone who can help with kernel and radio develpement, and someone who can help with porting the actual software over. The reason I need these people is because I have no experience in kernel development, and as for the actual developement of a KitKat rom, I'm sure its more complex then downloading KitKat source and throwing in the Thunderbolt device trees. I've been researching the topic and havent found much useful information. If you feel you can help support the effort please contact me.

I assume by transplant you mean just try to flash a rom for another device with simmilar specs? (Same MSM8655 CPU, Same amount of ram, etc)
Kitkat would be awesome!

Santod was the reason why I loved my thunderbolt. I still have it but rarely use it. Sadly the screen is cracked but it was always a reliable phone.

I'm sure there are more than a few people who would contribute to the cause of getting AOSP and CM11 on this phone. My old fascinate has it and so do all my other phones since.

There definitely are, but the difficulty of getting data on AOSP for this device, coupled with the age, current ownership/userbase, and developer interest translates to probably not. It's okay though, it was a great ride while it lasted.

eager newb seeking experienced android development veteran to learn from

hey, hopefully im posting this in the right section. im still pretty new to xda as well as the fascinating world of root access, custom recovery's and roms, and such so please let me know if this post is out of place and i apologize ahead of time if it is.
anyways, as for my original reason for posting to the forum, hi everybody ive somewhat recently discovered the possibilities of root access, custom roms and the like. not long ago i was in the market for a new device and came across an offerup post for a galaxy core prime SM-G360T1 (the metro pcs variant) at the price of $35 obo soo, personally never being the biggest samsung supporter i offered $20 n continued looking for another decent LG to hook up to my metro service. long story short they accepted my offer n deals like that shant b ignored so i purchased said core prime n spent the whole night searching through the xda forums to learn all i could.
soo, here i am now the proud owner of my first galaxy device, a rooted SM-G360T1 with a good working touch version of twrp (my preferred choice in custom recoveries) but, as ive come to discover only one very aptly named custom rom exists for this particular galaxy and though i completely respect its creator for all the time & effort he put into releasing the first working pre-rooted, de-bloated custom rom available for the SM-G360T1, i personally decided to stick with the stock rooted firmware and do the de-bloating and such myself.
ok sry about the mindless rambling there i may have gotten a bit carried away. now, as for my point in posting this in the first place. i wouldnt feel right asking others to solve my little issues for me so im not gunna try to pressure anybody into puttin out more roms for the metro core prime. instead, if at all possible i would merely like to meet someone more experienced and well-versed in the art of android development who might b interested in maybe taking me under their wing so that i might get the opportunity to learn the ways of the code and hopefully one day have all the knowledge necessary to develop my own custom roms, or maybe even eventually get myself a couple of apps that i can b proud of onto the play store.
to summarize, i am but a young aspiring software developer will very little knowlege of or experience with code, tho was raised on home built pcs my whole life so i know my way around a desktop pretty well hardware-wise as well as software-wise, im very willing and eager to learn, whilst having already developed through my previous experiences, a healthy fear of bricking yet another phone which has resulted in an increase in the frequency with which i backup my data, as well as a certain acquired hesitation toward attempting any uncertain actions without first doing the appropriate research on the given subject and im hoping to find someone willing to pass some of their vast knowledge down to me whom i can consider to b my teacher, professor, sensai, master, whichever u prefer, and whom i would never hesitate but to thank and give credit for any and all software that i may one day develop as a result of the lessons they had taught me :victory:
aaaanyways, this post turned out a lot longer than i anticipated so, if uve been able to stick it out and make it this far i am both sry for taking up so much of your time, as well as truly grateful to u for having taken said time to hear me out. well, have a wonderful day everybody and i hope to hear from my future sensai soon. until such time i shall b waiting paitiently thnx again for reading
oh and also just wanted to add that if anybody that knows what theyre doing happens to be in the midst of making/porting any new roms for the SM-G360T1 samsung galaxy core prime metro pcs version and needs any help with like testing or wutever let me know, i got a good twrp nandroid backup ready to b restored n just in case of an emergency i still got odin and the rooted kernel that i used to root it in the first place saved onto my pc

Dev Support?

Hey everyone! Basically I've gotten myself into a situation where I'll be jumping from device to device through work every few months, but sometimes my job will ask for the phone back early. I have a 10 right now, but there's no point in letting that collect dust. I figured I'd sell it and grab an A9 for those in between times. The dev community for this thing is sparse though, which is sad. Even if we could attract someone to port another rom down to us, that'd be an improvement! Anyone else willing to try and reach out/pledge some money to attract devs? I'd be able to do fifty dollars at first, more once a rom comes about!

Even though the A9 is a great device, the lack of popularity/interest in it has effectively killed it development-wise. Really, it's a miracle that we even have CM and s-off available.
That being said, we do have stock based and Cyanogenmod available, which most people seem to be satisfied with. Is there a specific rom that you'd like to see ported?
Really what I'd like to see is a custom kernel with uc/uv and oc support.

Good eye...I didn't catch that. Yea the Sprint variant is the black sheep of the A9 family.

Custom rom info on latin variation xt1543

HELLO!!
Writing for a delicate issue, a year ago I received this device as a gift from family and I've really started to get used to it, but before that I had a us variation Samsung galaxy S3 which I could modify in the craziest ways with root, custom roms and such, I always used this source for everything that peeked my interest but now I've noticed that not much android development (if not at all) is dedicated to the Latin variation of phones, in my case the XT1543 / Build MPI24.107-55-2 Dual sim, maybe I haven't looked good enough or maybe due to lack of understanding I may not have noticed but if any one can help me pointing out any great custom roms that can support this variation and build to kindly let me know, I'd really appreciate it since I don't want to think of throwing away this phone only because of very limited customization.
If anyone can and is willing to help, then God bless you. :good:
Every rom tagged as [OSPREY] should work on your device, unless stated otherwise.

I'm using this device, and as monterrey4ever says every ROM/kernel/etc that says OSPREY should work. For some reason there's no official TWRP, but a simple web search leads to https://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/orig-development/twrp-twrp-moto-g-2015-t3170537
