After being connected to WiFi for a while the wifi speeds drop to less than a quarter of their normal speeds, e.g. at home 6 Mbps drops to 1.4 Mbps. It is the same at work connecting to an enterprise level AP (although speed drop is 30 Mbps to about 5 so less of a problem).
I know it is device related as other devices tested at the same time are at the right speed.
Toggling WiFi off then on again returns everything to normal speed. Anyone else?
It's like it reverts to power saving mode. Didn't have this problem with my 4 or current N7.

I haven't had your issue and I've been speed testing here and there all day.
Have you tried turning off wifi optimization under wifi/options?
I have turned that off now and rebooted. I turned this off the other day without rebooting and there was no difference but will see how this goes.

I had similar problems when my friend connected a Blackberry Z10 to my router, constantly dropping out after about half an hour of connection, so try this:
I found that my at the time SGS2, could only connect in 'g' mode, whereas her BB was connecting in 'n'. I believe this was confusing the crappy B.T. router I have, so I changed the settings of the router to only accept 'g' connections. Problem solved for me.
Worth a try anyway. Especially if the other devices connecting to your router are a bit older and only use a 'g' connection.

There are no drops in WiFi, it just slows. All my other devices are N too.

Odd, I don't have this problem. The wifi a runs at full speed even in low signal areas. Maybe it's something to do with the router?

I have this on my home WiFi with both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5. Both are connected to 5GHz 802.11n on a dual-band Netgear N600/WNDR3700.
Performing a test just after boot, the speeds reported by Ookla's speed test app are:
Nexus 4: 46Mbps dl / 12Mbps ul
Nexus 5: 82Mbps dl / 12Mbps ul
After some period of time, the results (recalling from memory) change to:
Nexus 4: 2Mbps dl / 11Mbps ul
Nexus 5: 2Mbps dl / 11Mbps ul
If I switch off WiFi and then switch it back on again, each phone will then return to its previous higher speeds.
Never have figured out exactly what triggers the slow-down; my best guess is that it's something to do with the phone going into deep sleep, or perhaps related to power-saving functions on the router.
A Linux-based laptop is connected to the same AP and I don't notice any issue with that. Don't recall the Nexus 7 having any issues either (though that can only connect to the 2.4GHz radio).
I didn't notice this on my N4, but I never checked, and in retrospect I remember having some problems streaming video when you normally would think the connection would be OK. Will give Google a call.
The problem exists on my home router, an access point I also have in the house (different manufacturer) and at work (different again).
Have tried changing to 2.4 GHz only but no luck.

Basically, google had to release a fix to solve this problem.
I'm noticing slow WiFi as well on my Nexus 5, with Netgear APs at home.
Also the 4G is weird - here in the UK, upload remains strong but download is slower than other phones running the same speedtest from the same location and a fair bit slower.
Will hold off judgement for now though.
Got an ASUS router at work so gonna test that.
It will not see the 5GHZ band on my Netgear WNDR4500 at all though - then again neither will my Nexus 7 2013
(My Nexus 4 does see the 5GHZ band SSID however then again probably due to different WiFi chipset or something)

Yeah been testing 4G on Vodafone today vs an iPhone 5S - getting consistently slower download speeds in the same locations on the same speedtest servers.
Has anyone else tried using the N5 in and around London on a 10mhz 800 band network (so basically Vodafone or O2)
Also is the 5Ghz 20mhz ? I seem to be getting 70mbit download on a 1000mbit connection
5ghz works on an ASUS router but seems to just be completely absent on Netgear routers (sure its a 20/40/Auto/Band setting somewhere)
Having called Google and tried the suggest factory reset, problem persists so will call again and likely try a replacement.

Same problem was in Nexus 10 when it came out.

i have the same problem. it also affects LTE. both cut down by a third or so after some unknown amount of time.
I don't have access to LTE, so can't comment there. I will be getting a replacement tomorrow and will report back then if it is fixed.
Also keen to see if the battery is any better in the replacement. Reports seem to vary wildly on these forums and in reviews but my finding is that the battery is no better then the N4 battery in any way.

Have y'all had Android devices in the past? As in, have y'all had Google accounts to which you've backed up your data (e.g. WiFi credentials) that automatically were transferred over to your new device?
I ask this, because I had to do a factory reset and prevented Google from backing up my data and preventing automatic restore (e.g. I unchecked "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore" before I did a factory reset).
There seems to be an issue where the restored WiFi settings don't sit well with the new device, and you have to manually input your WiFi credentials and have the Nexus 5 configure it from anew. It may also help with slow connection speeds and connection issues in general since I found that after I did this, my connection strength increased (qualitatively; I haven't done quantitative analysis) and the range at which it still connects to WiFi has increased.
Here are some links to the issue that I, personally, have run into, but near the end of the second issue tracker, someone has ADB commands that essentially accomplish the same thing (i.e. wiping all stored WiFi data)

Might be something to try before you send it into RMA (since it will take like, 2-3 weeks to get the replacement phone, and even then it sounds like this is a purely software issue).
EDIT: Note, that unchecking the "Backup data" and "Automatic restore" (I think doing the former will automatically grey out the Automatic restore option anyways) means you will have to reinstall all your applications manually one by one. This is probably easier if you just log onto a computer and have Google Play in a browser to download it to your device.
Furthermore, my specific issue didn't lay with slow WiFi speeds, but rather with the inability for the Nexus 5 to automatically reconnect to a WiFi router once it exited and reentered range. It was also unable to manually connect to the router unless I cycled WiFi or Airplane mode (or reboot the phone).

I always choose not to restore my backed up settings to a new device, and so manually create the WiFi connections. Doesn't appear to make any difference in my case.

I had a similar question, but I just want to know why I see 72 Mb/s connection in the info, instead of 150 or 300? Asus RT-N66U with Merlin firmware, 802.11n only, 40MHz bandwidth (but also tried 20/40MHz). All computers show 150/270/300 (I know these are just theoretical). My wireless desktop can transfer a file at 10MB/s...the N5 (and a 2012 N7, 2013 N7, GNex, and Nexus S) do about 2MB/s.
I'm having exactly the same issues as t2002 and TheFluffyOne - Just after booting I'll get >10mbps dl but after an hour or two if I run the speedtest app again it will have slowed down to <2mbps. It's horribly frustrating, hopefully it's just a software issue and will be patched soon.
A few users reported weak WiFi signal strength on N5. Good WiFi signal strength is very important for me and this is one of things I like on my current SGS, so Im wondering how good is Wlan strength on yours N5 ?

I'm contemplating taking this back now and getting a refund, as i don't think its acceptable. does anyone else get this constant fluctuation?
I have also noticed when you put your hand over the top of the phone the signal can drop completely. Not taht i do this, but other phones i have do not suffer with this.
i take it not many people are seeing this issue, are others with the phone able to check the wifi range and fluctuations in comparison with other devices. How can it go from full bars to 2, then back to full constantly when other phones are solid. Trying to work out if its worth exchanging for another. Speeds just change from say 72mbs to like 19mbs non stop. Thanks

Do not use the bars when comparing signal.
Download an app that shows you the actual signal level in dbm. Bars can be set to whatever the developer wants. I could make you have full bars at -110 dbm which would be a useless connection, but still show full bars. For the most part, you should disregard them.
Would be possible to boost WiFi reception with a software tweak? Even if Google doesnt provide a fix, could be WiFi signal strength increased in custom roms? I hope some developer will know to answer this.
I have chance to get N5 32gb next week and I really want it, but since Im a lot in other countries, good WiFi signal strength is very important for me (to connect on WiFi hotspots)

I have read that some N5 owners lost WiFi connection when they were about 10 m away from router. This is unacceptable IMO. I hope software tweak can boost WiFi reception.

I'm facing the same issue. I'm few feets from AP and I'm getting weak and unstable signal. The worse thing is that it is not picking up signal from my main AP (Edimax) at home... It does not "see" the network at all even all other devices at home use it fine.
Very weak signal with this phone, I got full bars on my previous phones in my office but now only 2 bars. If you put your hand near the top of the phone the signal completely drops.

Yup weak signal. Initially it didn't want to connect to 3g but that was fixed with the service menu. And now I am noticing weak WiFi signal.
I'm guessing this has to do with the antenna.
Its easy to open the phone I'm going to crack it open and see what I find.
Have you folks tried going into your N5's WiFi settings & look under the Advanced submen (press the 3 dots on the lower right of screen)
Tried turning off 5 Ghz band if your router is on the typical 2.4 Ghz band - and if you have the newer dual band N router, enable your 5 Ghz band - could be interferences from other nearby devices or AP ??
Install the free app, Wifi Analayzer from Play Store & run it - take a look at your AP's signal strength, try switching to a less congested channel since the airwaves are shared, regardless which of the 11 channels you are defaulting to ...
Mine is running just fine, -60 to -50 dBm with the N home router behind 2 sheetrock walls.
Compared to my Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy SIII, I have superior Wifi Signal on my Nexus 5 to a very positive surprise...however network drop outs for Cellular connection is quite annoying...

I have this problem too. Sometimes my signal is so weak that it disconnects with the router and falls back on 3G.
I tried everything. Just went into Safe Mode, but Wifi is still weak, it doesnt matter.
I tried to only use 2,4GHz and turned Wifi optimalisation off. Still the same weak signal.
I tested it with the app "Wifi Analyzer" If I stand next to the router it gets about -50dBm. Then I tested it with my brothers Galaxy S2, he got -40dBm. Thats a difference of 10dBm. -40dBm is a stronger signal.
We tried it at the 2nd floor, and he got a better signal again. So it's obviously my Nexus.
Android 4.4.2, stock, no root or something. Google come with a solution please. My previous phone had the same ****ty Wifi (HTC One X).

I've finally worked out that this seems to be an issue with the Home Signal Box that plugs into my broadband connection as I need one due to having no signal at all downstairs and a very weak signal upstairs.
The Nexus 5 connects to the box fine and I get full signal but no H on phone at all. If I want data I have to switch wifi on.
This is the only time I've ever seen this and i've tried my sim card in quite a few phones and in every other phone apart from this Nexus 5 I get both calls and data fine.
Does anyone else have both a Nexus 5 and Home Signal box and getting this issue?

I had a similar problem with my iPhone 5. Data didn't work without Wi-Fi or at best, was patchy. Three even specify on their site that Wi-Fi should still be used for data.
I have noticed the exact same behaviour on my Nexus 5 with the Home Signal box. My Nexus 4 (now used by my wife), daughter's Samsung S4 and son's Sony Xperia Z all work with voice and data.
There is another symptom of the Nexus 5 and Home Signal box I have just noticed, it's killing my battery! The Phone application is continuously causing a wakelock when the Nexus 5 is connected to the Home Signal box, if I unplug the Home Signal the wakelock stops and battery lasts a lot longer.
Hope Three are aware of this and can provide a fix.
I left a message on the 3 facebook site and their response was just to switch my wifi on when I'm in house. Well I do that whenever I intend to use any amount of data but when my phone is just sat there waiting for something to do i'd prefer it to be only using battery on phone signal and not wireless as well.
I've devised a workaround using Tasker to switch on Wi-Fi and switch off Mobile Data while at home and vice versa when I leave. Battery life is back to normal. Phone app isn't even showing on battery usage screen and having Wi-Fi on all the time I'm at home isn't using as much battery as the Phone app was with Mobile Data on even though there was no data connection. I think the problem is that the Home Signal box is not allowing the phone to establish a data connection and the Phone app continuously keeps trying thus running the battery down. I'll work with this for now but I do hope Three come up with a fix.
My Nexus 5 arrived today, seems to be working happily with our Home Signal box. Weird. Potential defect or something?

So you turn your mobile data off in the house too? Because the WiFi battery use replaces the mobile data battery use... and should actually use less.
Voice Radio uses batttery, then mobile data uses further battery on top of that. So unless you're turning off mobile data completely, you should find that WiFi on all the time is a better solution.
This isn't really relevant to the thread though, so sorry about that.

I'm having the same issue with a white Nexus 5, Baseband version M8974A-1.0.25.0.17 and the 3UK black home signal box.
Feels like that whilst 'Data enabled' is ticked in 'Mobile network settings', the phone keeps reattempting the data connection, even though i have WiFi enabled.. ??
The same SIM does NOT have any issue in my GalaxyNexus.
1st and 3rd line tech support at 3UK have confirmed that data is getting though the SIM thus the handset itself is seemingly the issue. 3UK are recommending that I take this up with Google...
Same problem here, N5 + Black Home Signal = No data. Works fine on my other phones and iPad. Also when used with a Vodafone Sure Signal my Nexus gets data fine.

This is not usually the case (edit: In my experience). Unless the Nexus 5 has some special radio hardware I am not yet aware of? The additional fluctuation in signal strength makes that even less true IMO
There are arguments on both sides of the fence if you google it, but I sit on the "WiFi is better" side.

Just install JuiceDefender and it sorts this out for you, or seems to for me anyway. It disables data if you have a wifi connection i.e. whilst you are in the house. Upshot is good battery life and I don't need to do anything to the phone - juicedefender does it for you.

Sorry, I didn't mean that as a generalisation. When using femtocells for data my battery lasts longer than with wifi.

I just sent my Nexus 5 back and got a Note 3, I'd prefer the Nexus 5 though. If its fixed I might get another one. My home signal box hasn't worked since yesterday either so no signal in my house
Seems to be fixed now. I am now getting a data connection through my Home Signal box. I have not changed anything on my Nexus 5 so can only assume that Three have made some change in the background to how the Home Signal works with the Nexus 5.

I have it on both 2,4 and 5 GHz.
The last hour I can't connect to any SSID. And suddenly it works.
I Hope, that this is a software/firmware issue and they fix it in the next update that hopefully come soon.
Boy, am I glad you are making this thread to report on this issue! I am having the very same problem and it is driving me bonkers!
I am trying to review this device for my YouTube channel and this wifi issue is NOT helping. So far I have tried booting in safe mode, connecting to other wifi networks and reconfiguring my internet to no longer bridge together the 2.4&5 GHz bands.
What I am finding is that safemode has no effect but I can connect to my in-law's network just fine. When I changed my network settings I was able to show that it simply just doesn't want to fetch data from the 5GHz band. It works just fine on the 2.4GHz band but now I am not enjoying my potential wifi speeds. Sony really needs to fix this. The last thing I was going to try was doing a factory reset on the device but I don't think it will matter.
If you have wifi issues, try to change channel, etc- from 13 to 11, or try update wifi firmware.
June update is around the corner, highly likely next week. That one might include fixes also.
But as an established youtuber I would reach out to Sony directly to get confirmation on the issue and potential fix.

I also have a wifi problem , but I have two access points linksys ea4500 and wrt1900ac on the first one it works perfectly on the second one stays connected but there is no internet, My issue specifically applies to wifi ac otherwise it works well... similar to my pervious lg g4
Same here. I can confirm that this can happen even on 2.4 or 5ghz wifi networks and that it's not a channel issue because I live in countryside with barely any other wifi networks.
But the problem is so much strange. For example, it will stop to work randomly when transfering data, watching youtube videos or such things but this never happens when using chromecast. I can pause, play, the videos, etc. with no issues. Like if it needed some heavy traffic to start having issues.

Same issue on my xz premium. Using both 2,4 and 5GHz at home. Having the issue also on all of my 3 WiFis at work.
WiFi is draining out my battery. 60% or more and around 30days of usage (having my device for a week now)
At the same WiFi at home are several devices connected without any issues. Xperia X compact, Z5 compact, ipad, Sony Soundbar. Sometimes my XZ Premium shows me "connected to WiFi without Internet"
This is the worst Xperia experience ever

I've also posted the same. And many others also. Let's see what happens
My WiFi says it's been running for 34 days+ but my connection on 2.4 has been good and solid from the start. I have no problem with there being an internet connection. I am fairly certain that the two issues are related in some way and some are having more problems than others.
I haven't had any problems, but then I did a complete reset of the phone a few days after I received it. When in doubt, that might be something you can try.
Turn off Smart cleaner.
That's the cause of WiFi disconnection and battery drain.
I have no wifi issues (2.4 only - no 5 for me) but it says that wifi has been running for 669 days. LOL
I sure hope Sony fixes these silly bugs.
So I have a brand new Note Plus that in two locations will connect to wifi, but I am experiencing significant packet loss (30-70%) if I ping from my phone to the router. Both locations use a Cambium E410 Wireless Access Point. I have taken it to 2 other places and experience no wireless issues.. I was trying to see if it was a 2.4 or 5Ghz issue potentially, but I can't see where in this version of android to force the Note to use 5Ghz vs 2.4ghz. Also trying to determine what other troubleshooting I could perform...

Is the router wireless too? Then switch off the access point and try to connect to the router directly and check. For the best speeds, every wireless access point should be connected to the router with an Ethernet cable. Put all the above - both wireless access points and the router - all on the same ssid and password but different channels so they don't step on each other (which might also be the problem). Then, your devices will automatically connect to the one with the strongest signal and not even know or care about it. You will have to set the channels in use rather than leaving the devices on "auto". You can use "WiFi Analyzer" and "WiFi Tool" - both free downloads on the play store. Don't hide the ssid's - unless it is all working flawlessly - later .

The wifi strength of my note 10 is significantly worse. My previous note 9 had signal in my bedroom or my floor ,but note's 10 signal is very frustrating... so bad Samsung

This is definitely a problem with the phone you need it replaced

Yes you are right, note 9 the range is better than note 10 plus, this is what disappointed me most.
The rest is ok, I had read note 10 only catch the signal is strong, if its weak it doesn't show in WiFi scanning.
Hope they can fix this.
