[Q] Note 10 Plus - Wifi Issues - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Questions & Answers

So I have a brand new Note Plus that in two locations will connect to wifi, but I am experiencing significant packet loss (30-70%) if I ping from my phone to the router. Both locations use a Cambium E410 Wireless Access Point. I have taken it to 2 other places and experience no wireless issues.. I was trying to see if it was a 2.4 or 5Ghz issue potentially, but I can't see where in this version of android to force the Note to use 5Ghz vs 2.4ghz. Also trying to determine what other troubleshooting I could perform...

Is the router wireless too? Then switch off the access point and try to connect to the router directly and check. For the best speeds, every wireless access point should be connected to the router with an Ethernet cable. Put all the above - both wireless access points and the router - all on the same ssid and password but different channels so they don't step on each other (which might also be the problem). Then, your devices will automatically connect to the one with the strongest signal and not even know or care about it. You will have to set the channels in use rather than leaving the devices on "auto". You can use "WiFi Analyzer" and "WiFi Tool" - both free downloads on the play store. Don't hide the ssid's - unless it is all working flawlessly - later .

The wifi strength of my note 10 is significantly worse. My previous note 9 had signal in my bedroom or my floor ,but note's 10 signal is very frustrating... so bad Samsung

Yes you are right, note 9 the range is better than note 10 plus, this is what disappointed me most.
The rest is ok, I had read note 10 only catch the signal is strong, if its weak it doesn't show in WiFi scanning.
Hope they can fix this.

Wifi SLower than should be..

I have a linksys wifi N router at home and my laptop connects at around 144mbps, however my phone only connects at around 72mbps..
Also my laptop always sits on my coffee table which is about 15' from my router (through one wall) and has excellent signal. But my phone usually only has good signal in the same spot. It only usually lights up like two of the wifi indicators.
Does everyone else have this issue? Are the wifi chips just not strong in the phone or what?
My laptop is currently saying that it is recieving at 54mbps, my mesmerize is showing the same speed. Although my laptop is stating that I have excellent strength, and my phone is showing fair strength. I think the wifi is only so-so in this phone, I rooted last night and just got wifi tethering going. With the phone broadcasting a hostspot next to the laptop it only gave a fair signal strength. I'm not sure if the strength of a wifi hotspot has anything to do with the recieving end of the signal though.

I've had this issue with both my droid and my blackberry (when I used my blackberry). I think that the wifi capabilities in phones are not as good as they are in computers.
but the reason I'm asking this is this phone is supposed to have wifi N radio in it.. Older phones only had G antennas which are only capable of 54mbps.. wifi N is theoretically capable of up to 300mbps, I've never seen anything actually connect at that speed, but it would seem that my phone which is brand new should atleast connect at the same speed as a 2 year old wifi N laptop???

If your router is only G that's the max speed you will get?
Wifi is a pain in general to troubleshoot, as there could be many, many reasons why it is slow or not working at all.
General questions to be asked are:
Do you have security enabled wifi?
What kind of encryption are you using?
How many devices are connected to the network? (Wired or wireless)
Is the router set to send a wireless N signal? (most routers have that optioned, but not always running as most devices are not wireless N compatible)
I've had my phone connected at several wifi's (I travel a lot for work and am in hotels all the time) and my connection speed varies. At home I have great connection and speed test to 5megs a second download (wireless N--it connects) currently at a hotel in Colorado, 1480kbps download (wireless G)
I still stick by my thoughts as far as the wifi on the phones will never be as good as the wifi in a computer, be it a laptop or a desktop. Phones just don't have the battery power to hold a super strong/fast wifi signal.
I have wifi speed problems also but my first gen ipod touch does not seem to have issues

yes, the router is set to wifi N or actually it's set to all!!! I have security enabled..
There's only two devices running wifi (laptop/cell phone)
I get fast download speeds like 5000kbps down/2500kbps up when using the speedtest.net app..
But when I go to wifi settings and click on my router once it's connected whether I have Good (usually) or excellent it's only connected to my router at 72Mbps.. I have a static IP set for it..
I guess mobile phone wifi chips just aren't up to par with laptop chips

Those are my sentiments exactly. Even with it not being as fast, it's plenty fast for everything I need it to do, but 3g is fast enough for me generally. I only connect to wireless when I'm not in good cell service.

Wifi Turns Off

My wifi turns off almost instantly after turning on. Sometimes it will connect to my network and other times it's a no go.
This is a wifi only version and I'm still in the return window so thinking about swapping it out or just taking it back

Yes, all other devices work fine with the router.
I have tried both DHCP and static and have assigned a specific IP to the tablet from the router.
If I could get the wifi to stay on i'd see what I could download
Edit: Seems to be something to do with the router. I have two in my house (one upstairs and one down). Both resolve back to my uverse model so the routers are just wireless bridges I guess. If I connect to the downstairs and turn wireless off and on I have no problems. If I connect to the upstairs router things go down the crapper

I have the same issue on my european GT P6210, connected to a Netgear WNDR3800, which has dual band WiFi (2.4GHz B/G/N and 5GHz A/N).
Yesterday evening, everything worked like a charm on the 2.4GHz band supporting N (up to 130Mbps) but today the connection is really random. I tried to connect to the 5GHz band network but to no avail.
So I restricted the 2.4GHz band network to B/G only (up to 54Mbps) and it is way more stable.

in my experience the wireless N on the tab + is downright unstable. using wireless G tends to correct this problem. and since i can think of no reason i need 130mbps throughput to the tab, i see no reason not to continue using the G. disappointing though. the tab 7 experiences the same issues

Did you set the tab to only use G? or did you set the router to only broadcast G? I had to set my router to only broadcast G
I have had this problem with 3 different Galaxy tabs. Keep in mind that this is connecting to a work WIFI using wpa2 enterprise. Boggles me that it connects for like 2 mins then drops, only way to reconnect is to disable/enable the wifi. At home using wpa2 non enterprise I can connect perfectly with no drops.

After being connected to WiFi for a while the wifi speeds drop to less than a quarter of their normal speeds, e.g. at home 6 Mbps drops to 1.4 Mbps. It is the same at work connecting to an enterprise level AP (although speed drop is 30 Mbps to about 5 so less of a problem).
I know it is device related as other devices tested at the same time are at the right speed.
Toggling WiFi off then on again returns everything to normal speed. Anyone else?
It's like it reverts to power saving mode. Didn't have this problem with my 4 or current N7.

I haven't had your issue and I've been speed testing here and there all day.
Have you tried turning off wifi optimization under wifi/options?
I have turned that off now and rebooted. I turned this off the other day without rebooting and there was no difference but will see how this goes.

I had similar problems when my friend connected a Blackberry Z10 to my router, constantly dropping out after about half an hour of connection, so try this:
I found that my at the time SGS2, could only connect in 'g' mode, whereas her BB was connecting in 'n'. I believe this was confusing the crappy B.T. router I have, so I changed the settings of the router to only accept 'g' connections. Problem solved for me.
Worth a try anyway. Especially if the other devices connecting to your router are a bit older and only use a 'g' connection.

Odd, I don't have this problem. The wifi a runs at full speed even in low signal areas. Maybe it's something to do with the router?

I have this on my home WiFi with both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5. Both are connected to 5GHz 802.11n on a dual-band Netgear N600/WNDR3700.
Performing a test just after boot, the speeds reported by Ookla's speed test app are:
Nexus 4: 46Mbps dl / 12Mbps ul
Nexus 5: 82Mbps dl / 12Mbps ul
After some period of time, the results (recalling from memory) change to:
Nexus 4: 2Mbps dl / 11Mbps ul
Nexus 5: 2Mbps dl / 11Mbps ul
If I switch off WiFi and then switch it back on again, each phone will then return to its previous higher speeds.
Never have figured out exactly what triggers the slow-down; my best guess is that it's something to do with the phone going into deep sleep, or perhaps related to power-saving functions on the router.
A Linux-based laptop is connected to the same AP and I don't notice any issue with that. Don't recall the Nexus 7 having any issues either (though that can only connect to the 2.4GHz radio).
I didn't notice this on my N4, but I never checked, and in retrospect I remember having some problems streaming video when you normally would think the connection would be OK. Will give Google a call.
The problem exists on my home router, an access point I also have in the house (different manufacturer) and at work (different again).
Have tried changing to 2.4 GHz only but no luck.

Basically, google had to release a fix to solve this problem.
I'm noticing slow WiFi as well on my Nexus 5, with Netgear APs at home.
Also the 4G is weird - here in the UK, upload remains strong but download is slower than other phones running the same speedtest from the same location and a fair bit slower.
Will hold off judgement for now though.
Got an ASUS router at work so gonna test that.
It will not see the 5GHZ band on my Netgear WNDR4500 at all though - then again neither will my Nexus 7 2013
(My Nexus 4 does see the 5GHZ band SSID however then again probably due to different WiFi chipset or something)

Yeah been testing 4G on Vodafone today vs an iPhone 5S - getting consistently slower download speeds in the same locations on the same speedtest servers.
Has anyone else tried using the N5 in and around London on a 10mhz 800 band network (so basically Vodafone or O2)
Also is the 5Ghz 20mhz ? I seem to be getting 70mbit download on a 1000mbit connection
5ghz works on an ASUS router but seems to just be completely absent on Netgear routers (sure its a 20/40/Auto/Band setting somewhere)
Having called Google and tried the suggest factory reset, problem persists so will call again and likely try a replacement.

Same problem was in Nexus 10 when it came out.

i have the same problem. it also affects LTE. both cut down by a third or so after some unknown amount of time.
I don't have access to LTE, so can't comment there. I will be getting a replacement tomorrow and will report back then if it is fixed.
Also keen to see if the battery is any better in the replacement. Reports seem to vary wildly on these forums and in reviews but my finding is that the battery is no better then the N4 battery in any way.

Have y'all had Android devices in the past? As in, have y'all had Google accounts to which you've backed up your data (e.g. WiFi credentials) that automatically were transferred over to your new device?
I ask this, because I had to do a factory reset and prevented Google from backing up my data and preventing automatic restore (e.g. I unchecked "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore" before I did a factory reset).
There seems to be an issue where the restored WiFi settings don't sit well with the new device, and you have to manually input your WiFi credentials and have the Nexus 5 configure it from anew. It may also help with slow connection speeds and connection issues in general since I found that after I did this, my connection strength increased (qualitatively; I haven't done quantitative analysis) and the range at which it still connects to WiFi has increased.
Here are some links to the issue that I, personally, have run into, but near the end of the second issue tracker, someone has ADB commands that essentially accomplish the same thing (i.e. wiping all stored WiFi data)

Might be something to try before you send it into RMA (since it will take like, 2-3 weeks to get the replacement phone, and even then it sounds like this is a purely software issue).
EDIT: Note, that unchecking the "Backup data" and "Automatic restore" (I think doing the former will automatically grey out the Automatic restore option anyways) means you will have to reinstall all your applications manually one by one. This is probably easier if you just log onto a computer and have Google Play in a browser to download it to your device.
Furthermore, my specific issue didn't lay with slow WiFi speeds, but rather with the inability for the Nexus 5 to automatically reconnect to a WiFi router once it exited and reentered range. It was also unable to manually connect to the router unless I cycled WiFi or Airplane mode (or reboot the phone).

I always choose not to restore my backed up settings to a new device, and so manually create the WiFi connections. Doesn't appear to make any difference in my case.

I had a similar question, but I just want to know why I see 72 Mb/s connection in the info, instead of 150 or 300? Asus RT-N66U with Merlin firmware, 802.11n only, 40MHz bandwidth (but also tried 20/40MHz). All computers show 150/270/300 (I know these are just theoretical). My wireless desktop can transfer a file at 10MB/s...the N5 (and a 2012 N7, 2013 N7, GNex, and Nexus S) do about 2MB/s.
I'm having exactly the same issues as t2002 and TheFluffyOne - Just after booting I'll get >10mbps dl but after an hour or two if I run the speedtest app again it will have slowed down to <2mbps. It's horribly frustrating, hopefully it's just a software issue and will be patched soon.

Wifi showing 1Mbps connection speed

Hello guys,
I just received my Motorola Photon Q mobile. Asked Cornholio to do the SIM mod.
Tested my new phone yesterday with carbonROM . Well I Must say all looks good except wifi.
Wifi speed is showing me 1Mbps
My old xperia mini pro is showing me someting around 70Mbps. My wife has got new mobile too ( Lenovo Vibe X2 ) and she has 150Mbps.
Even her old Iphone 4S is showing her 70Mbps or so.
So it looks like there is some problem with my new phone.
My router is Netgear JWNR2000V2.
Do you guys have some experience with this ?

You won't get 150 or even 70 mbps as the phone doesn't do 802.11n IIRC. G is limited to 54mbps, and that is 'ideal'. Also the phone doesn't do the 5ghz band, so you are limited to 2.4ghz.
Unless you wifi speeds are actually slow, who cares what it says it is connected at.

That's not completely right.
It does 802.11n but not the 5GHz band.
It also has only one WLAN antenna, so the speed is limited.
Looking in OpenWRT it shows for my PQ:
RX Rate -> 72.2 Mbit/s, MCS 7, 20MHz
TX Rate -> 65.0 Mbit/s, MCS 7, 20MHz
MCS Index -> http://mcsindex.com/
Btw. it is actually better using 802.11n over 802.11g.
So don't disable 802.11n in your router, consider to disable 802.11b instead.
Well yeah it is slow.
I was not able to connect or load the Google store yesterday on my new Photon Q.
But I must say it is connected. I saw some threads whre ppl were complaining that wifi is connected and disconnected after some time. I do not have this. I have just this connection speed is 1Mbps So watching youtube videos or surfing web on the phone through wifi is not possible at the moment
So I am oging to do some testing today. Hope I will find the problem.

I was never able to get my N network to connect... but I may have been forcing it to 5ghz, which explains why it wouldn't have connected.
I haven't used my Q in a year or so personally, so this was all from memory. Either way, the hardware is 3 years old at this point, so the newest wifi tech is a bit beyond its manufacture date.
@arrrghhh, sadly I cannot disable 802.11g in OpenWRT with my router (a driver limitation I guess) so I cannot test it.
There were also some limitations on wether it connects and if it is stable (a wireless setting "preamble" [short/long] caused me random crashes).
@Jovzin, if I remember right, there have been reports that a defective WiFi antenna might be the problem.
Though, I'm not sure where and how the antenna is connected. I only know that there is a "special plastic" within the phone, which replaces the antenna.

What is your router configured to broadcast? Have you tried changing any of the settings? Are you sure the hardware is OK - did you test it before the SIM modification?
@Jovzin, it might help, yes. (Shipping costs are pretty high.)
But first you should open your PQ and take a look.
Maybe CornholioGSM just forgot to attach it correctly and you don't need to replace anything.
Also, please answer to arrrghhhs question.
Are you sure it isn't a power saving function? Try downloading something in the background and then checking the connection speed.
My droid 4 also connects at 1Mbps when the connection is idle. Laptop wireless adapters also commonly do this to save power - they show their unthrottled speed on the wireless panel but you can see it connecting at 1mbps when idle on both the router and 3rd party wireless utils.

I did a factory reset.
And now somehow it is working. And I am sure taht I have uncheckd that battery saver for wifi.
But when the phone is idle it is 1Mbps. When I am downloading somethign from store it is 65Mbps. Hmm there is some build in saver ? Which is different than this power saver wifi which I can tick in wifi options ?
Anyway I am happy that somehow it is working

It is possible to watch HD youtube videos on PQ ? Cause in youtube app I see only 360p Was hoping that there will be option for 720 at least...
If you enabled 40mhz channel width on the router (you're using 20mhz now), you could double the 65mbps to 130mbps, but this only really works well if you're using 5ghz channel, or have a very quiet 2.4ghz channel, otherwise you're subjected to more interference.

Correct.
In 2.4GHz (what the PQ can) it is contraproductive to use 40MHz channel.
It even can be slowed down in a "noisy" environment (I gave it already up).
Also, this is ruthless to your neighbours, so don't.
In 5GHz it is only usable if you can use more than just a few channels.
Even then, it is obvious that most devices are 2.4 GHz and just "a few" can 5GHz (the PQ cannot).
So it actually is not a problem to use 40MHz channel in 5GHz. In future this might change.

Really slow and spotty wifi?

Will I get OTA updates if I don't put a SIM in? I'm on C432B126 right now and I think the seller that installed it for me messed it up, I'm not getting supercharge or fast charge with the included charger just normal charging and wifi has been really slow and spotty, I've tried everything to fix the wifi issues but it's still the same, can someone shed some light on this, thanks.

I am assuming you are using 5ghz wifi. Some phones have issues with high channel >48 5ghz wifi (my lg v20, mi max and the mate9). If you use 2.4ghz only the wifi will improve. However, if you want to use 5ghz goto your router wifi channel settings and set to either channel 36 or 48. Just note the lower channels have poorer wall penetration compared to channel 150+. If you got a large house consider a solution like Google wifi. If you are still getting very poor wifi, then you may have a faulty phone (dislodged antennae maybe).
To get supercharging you will need to use the original charger + CABLE.
Try using the ampere app to see how fast your phone is charging. Anything over 2 amps I would say it is good enough unless you are in a hurry.

I tried both 2.4ghz and 5ghz with no luck and I only get normal charging speeds with the included charger+cable, no fast charge or supercharge, charging to full takes nearly 3 hours.

Then take to a service centre, probably a faulty charging port/electronics and dislodged wifi antennae.
The WiFi on the Mate 9 is the best I've ever used.
I'm sitting in my car outside the house to send this, and I've never been able to do that with any other phone.
Have to disagree about 5G channels. The higher frequencies are absorbed more by building materials. That's why 5G generally covers less than 2G. If anyone finds the top channels are better than the lower ones it will be due to antenna variations in the router or the handset.

I've heard Huawei phones in general have great signal as well, perhaps I just got a bad unit. I'm sending mine back for an exchange since it'd really be an excellent phone without these two issues.
I had been thinking of adding a WiFi extender to provide coverage when I'm working in the garage. I don't need to now - the Mate 9 works fine in there.
Having a similar problem and I'm thinking it's an incompatibility issue with my Asus N55U. Every other device in the house connects at full 300mbit over 5ghz and 150mbit at 2.4ghz to my modem but my Mate 9 maxed out at 72mbit over 2.4ghz and 150mbit over 5ghz.
The big problem is the 5ghz wifi drops to 7mbit within a few seconds, doesn't matter where in the house I am, yet it always says excellent signal. 2.4ghz stays at 72mbit but my internet is 100mbit fibre so it's still not ideal.
I've tried different 5ghz channels (right now on 40), tried N-only, 20 and 40mhz, changing wifi names, changing security type and factory resetting the phone. Nothing has worked, I get an intermittent 50KB/s to 400KB/s from the phone at 5ghz, yet I connect my laptop to the 5ghz, get a solid 300mbit and download at 11MB/s with the same distance to the router.
Going to purchase a new router and hopefully this will resolve the issue otherwise I'll be sending the phone back.
I had the same problem (about wifi) I did lots of test with my mate 9 , 2 p9lite and my ipod 5g just my mate 9 had low results sometimes half download and upload than the other devices and always a really high ping 3 or 4 times more than the other devices. I wrote to amazon and also to huawei for describe this problem and they decided to replace it so I will receive the new one tomorrow. Them said nobody report this issue about a software error so they think this is an hardware factory problem. Hope you can solve it asap like me

I assume you're running DD-WRT? Try channel 36 and NA-Mixed.

I am having the same symptoms that you are on my Mate 9. Did you buy a new router, and did it make any difference in the wifi performance of the Mate 9? If so, could you please share which router you are using? Thanks.

Hi just wondering if your replacement mate 9 was any different as far as Wi-Fi goes compared to the one you posted the problems about. I have 2 mate 9's with similar symptoms (10 times higher ping and 3-4 times slower transfer speeds compared to laptops and other Wireless A/C phones), so just trying to figure out whether they are all going to have this problem or if I happen to have defective units that would be fixed by replacement.

I ended up buying a Linksys WRT1900ACS router, the Mate 9 now connects at 433Mbit to that even though my other devices connect at near 900Mbit. Still, my internet connection is only 100Mbit so 433Mbit is fine, and certainly better than 7Mbit.
But in case you were wondering the Oreo update didn't fix the issue, so I'm guessing it's a hardware issue. Haven't really bothered investigating it further after getting the new router.
