S7 Frezzes and black screens - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hey everyone,
I have the problem, that my S7 frezzes in irregular situations and then there is no interaction possible. The display is always black and just the Softkeys and the LED is pulsation.
To solve this issue I try to reboot my phone with combination of the Vol- + Power and Home Button. Sometimes I get into the Download Mode, and reboot the phone from there.
After the reboot of my phone the black screen is away and my device is working well again. But after a few minutes is it not possible to activate or deactivate the WLAN. Therefore I reboot my phone again. When I am rebooting now the phone I noticed that the phone does not shut down correctly. After a short vibration the softkeys are active again and the blue LED is plusating. To solve this issue I try to reboot the phone again with the combination of Vol- + Power and Home Button. Moreover I noticed in the settings that my device shows instead of "offical" the word "custom" in those situations.
MY DEVICE IS NOT ROOTED OR HAS OTHER MODIFIKATIONS!
After deleting the cache partition in the stock-recovery the device is rebooting again and everything works fine. The settings shows now the status "official" again.
My phone is always on the newest firmeware and patches:
Model: SM-G930F
Android-Version: 6.0.1
Basebandversion: G930FXXU1APEQ
Kernelversion: 3.18.14-8206888
Buildnumber: MMB29K.G930FXXU1APGG
Android-Patches: 1. July 2016
PhoneInfo says:
CSC-Code: VIA (O2)
Bootloader-Version: G930FXXU1APGG
PDA-Version: G930FXXU1APGG
CSC-Version: G930FTEF1APG1
Basebandversion: G930FXXU1APEQ
I think the reason for my black screens and frezzes is a corruptive firmware and it is not fixed yet from the Samsung updates.
I exclude a defective hardware for the reason that the device works normally after the restart and if the display would be really broken anything would not work.
Do you think I could be apps that let my S7 crashes so much? I have installed Spotify, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram, GearVR, Twitter, YouTube, Google Apps and LinkedIn.
I am thinking about installing a Custom ROM to eliminate the problems. Can someone who also had a Black Screen confirm, whether the problems are away with a custom ROM?
Thank you very much for helpful responses!

My advise would be to flash stock firmware via Odin and perform a factory reset. But first make a back-up of your important files from the device.

Hey,
I have found a new perspective to get a solution of this problem!
Today I used my Spotify App und then after a few songs my WLAN turned off. I tried to turn it on again, but i seemed to be frezzed and does not responding.
For a solution I tried to reboot my phone and then it stucked on shutting down.
So I rebooted by the combination of Vol- + Home + Power and got into the Download mode. Form there I restarted my phone.
I had this issue 2 times today and can reproduce it!
--> So I think Spotify has a huge bug!
Can someone, who has the same issue try to remove Spotify form the phone and give me a feedback?

Since I removed Spotify from my phone last week, I had no problems yet.
Do you have tried the same and can give me a feedback if it worked for you too?
In my opinion it is no SD-Card problem. Spotify on SD-Card could be the problem.
Does someone know, how I could prove that?

Ok guys I reinstalled the Spotify App form Google Play Store (Version 6.0) and got the problem again. But this time just my whole systemUI crashed and my phone did not respond. I am glad there was no black screen.
But it seems there is a big problem in the Spotify App!
As an experiment I downloaded one of my playlists and saved it on the SD-Card. Do you think that could be the problem?
I save all my pics from the camera also on SD-Cad and had no problem anytime. In the time when Spotify was not installed on my phone I had no issues!!
Does someone has an Idea what I can do to fix that problem?

I'm also experiencing random freezes when I wake the screen. I can replicate the issue with and without Spotify installed. I tried factory reset many times but no luck and this also happen in safe mode. I contacted Samsung but they said, they have not heard about this before. I'm pretty sure it's a software issue, but not sure what causing it
Any ideas?

Sounds like you've got a faulty device. My first did something similar

After some Software Updates including some bugfixes my device worked for 1 year without any new problems of freezes or black screens.
I think all those problems are based on buggy Software coming from Samsung.....

S7 freezes and reboots

I have the latest firmware on my S7 (exynos) and once every while the system freezes and then the phone reboots.
I don't know what's wrong with it.
Funny thing is my S5 with cm13 is WAY more stable than the S7...

I have tried few times in my previous S7. I guess it is the compatibility of app
My SD S7 does that when using the iheartRadio app - quite annoying
I'm on my second s7, the first would freeze and reboot regularly. Some folks here said they believed it was a software issue. I ended up exchanging it for a new one and haven't have had a single freeze or reboot since.
I Have it occasionally hoping an update fixes it
I have had mine for more than a week and so far no issues at all

having the same extremely annoying problem on my g930fd (DUAL sim) nougat
several times even had a black screen with nothing responding anymore so I had to wait to drain the battery completely so the device could reboot
resetted, hardresetted, re-flashed, re-rooted numerous times ... with no sollution
NOW (april 1st) just had a new update from samsung GF930FXXU1DQB7/G930FOLBDQB8/G930FXXU1DQB1
anybody else experience with this last update ?
I'm having the same problem and wrote about it on a Reddit page where a number of other people are having the problem with their S7's also: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS7/comments/5xx705/after_nougat_s7_keeps_getting_unresponsive/
No solution so far
I wrote:
"I also have this problem with S7 on Nougat which started about 3 weeks ago. It seems to be getting worse.
A couple of times where I've ignored it the S7 got so hot I actually thought about keeping it away from my person. I can always force restart it by Power+Volume. Mostly I can wake it up by pressing the power button and the screen will light up after about 10 seconds of waiting, but nothing responds.
Once I had it happen while using the device. When this happened, I noticed that swiping down the notification bar sped everything up temporarily. If the notification bar was hidden the current application would be laggy. If I swiped down the notification bar partially the application would render quickly as normal.
I've also found that Google Maps and Spotify are the two main apps when this happens, but a common link for me is that either one will be connected to bluetooth in the car or bluetooth headphones. I don't think it's ever frozen without bluetooth being connected, but that could just be coincidence.
A strange thing is that Spotify stays playing songs and responding remotely when the S7 has frozen. If I have Spotify open on my laptop controlling music on the S7, I can still skip forward/pause/play etc for ages, although the songs start skipping audio after 10mins or so before stopping completely. It's like the System UI is the problem on the S7, and the app itself is still responding?
I'm wondering about doing a full reset but I'm dreading the several hours of setting everything back up, without knowing if it will solve the problem.
I use Lightflow and I'm going to try uninstall that for a week and see if I still get the freezing, simply because it is the only app that is continuously running on my phone in the notification drawer."
Re above, I did a factory reset as advised by Samsung support and the problem has gone away.
no solution, not alone
meanwhile I have tried several things
factory reset, swipe, root, no root
I noticed that the problem starts to appear when more and more memory is being used ...
no update from anybody else ?
meanwhile I read on the net this problem is not exceptional anymore, more and more people having this problem ...
Just posting to say it's been two weeks in total since i did the factory reset and I haven't seen the problem happen once since. Thankfully.

S7 black screen problem

Hi,
I just got this s7 for 3 days and i have this problem where the screen wont turn on but the phone still is active.
A hard boot will fix it but its only a temp fix because i had this problem 4 times now in 3 days.
I didn't root it nor did i install any weird apps outside the google play store, i disabled a couple of bloat ware apps like all microsoft apps and a few google apps like hangouts and gmail.
I did some research and found out that more people have this problem but all the fixes they got it to wipe the cache but the phone still has the problem after that so i would like to know if more people on xda have this problem and i would like to know what they did to their phone so i can see if we have anything in common to pin point the problem.
See if the setting for preventing the phone to turn on in your pocket is enabled. If so, try disabling it and see if that works. It may be a problem with the proximity sensor if it's a hardware issue.
Thanks for the reply and i have that setting indeed turned on! So ill switch if off right now and lets hope this will fix it!
Seems like turning off that feature didn't work
If you have an SD remove it or format it. I had this on kitkat because of too many files in internal memory
Think i found the problem because i think its fixed. While restoring my old settings like wifi etc from my ggole account caused this problem and now that i skipped this part in the setup the phone seems to be working now for 2 days perfectly but thanks for the reply and help.
Woot, I have fixed the problem!!!!! Its the App Power Saving Feature that causes this!!! I had some app set to "always" and when i used any of these app and then put the phone in standby then it would lock up every now and then. Now that i have turned off this setting the phone runs steady for a week!

Is your phone still working fine without blackscreens?
I've got the same issue (sometimes 4 times in an hour, sometimes it doesn't happen for 2 days..!!).
I've tried fixing by doing a factory reset and turning app power saving mode off.
Unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Yesterday I got an unresponsive blackscreen again :crying:
Any ideas what could fix the problem?
(Ignore my signature, I'm writing about the S7, not the S6)

I updated my GS7 from marsh to nougat 7.0 last week, since then I have experienced a unresponsive black screen multiple times, ussaly happens if playing music and turning off the screen, when hitting home or power to turn back on the screen stays black, the captive buttons have light up, but it takes 30 seconds of hitting the buttons for the screen to finnaly kick on, a few times it has done this just from locking home screen, no apps running, screen won't wake up! What could be causing this and what can I do to fix it. Any help is appreciated.

Actually, I have the same issue, and I have the SM-G930F.
I updated yesterday to 7.0 via Samsung Smart Watch, then did a factory reset and even cleared dalvik cache.
Prior to that I ran rooted 6.0.1.
Any suggestions, what might be causing this? And any other solution than to factory reset?

I tryed a few diffrent players, it does it with all of them, Slacker, mp3 player, even YouTube Red, so can rule out a music app, I am running Nova launcher how ever I don't think it related to that. I have cleared cache and restarted and the problem still happend today... I'm thinking factory reset but really hate to do that, also thinking att store since they broke my phone with this update and still under warranty. Any other ideas?

Why does my Google Pixel randomly reboot?

Hi. My device worked just perfect until 5 days ago. It slowly began to ignore some tasks like opening apps or doing calls.
2 days ago my google pixel with Android 8.0 started to ignore every input i made, like opening apps or trying to reboot. It behaving like this after taking some pictures with the rear cam. After some attepts in opening apps it started to reboot. But instead of a normal reboot it stuck in a booting screen (the one with the Google G and a gray animation bar underneath). It took a while and i waited until it seemed that the OS booted correctly. But after this my device started to reboot randomly after a few minutes. After a while i figured out, that i can hold the power button while the screen with the google G was up to reboot it normally. This worked so that the phone was at least half an hour or more working until it rebooted again out of nowhere.
So far i tried to get it in safe mode and delete some apps like whatts app etc. In safe mode i didnt notice any crashes so far.... but in normal one it does a lot so deleting apps wasnt helpful. Turning on flight mode was not helpful either.
What can I do? What could it be?

Same thing happens with my Pixel, sometimes the phone is just get stuck on some random screen then I have to press and hold it for 15 seconds to let it reboot again. Lately I have started to see another problem, when it reboots bunch of google apps and services stops working and gives hell lot of notifications. All this started to happen after Android Oreo update

Same problem after android 8.0 update
If you have installed the latest Google phone/dialer app, that is likely the problem, was for me.
Find the app in settings and uninstall,it will roll back to a previous version and hopefully fix your issues.

My pixel does the same thing, ever since I updated to 8.0, have you tried doing a factory reset? I haven't done it yet, I have been uninstalling apps for the last couple of days, when it is in safe mode it works good, but when it's not, it freezes and restarts. I'm going to try uninstalling the latest version on google dialer to see if it helps.
I just want to update everyone in case you are having a problem with the random reboots.
I uninstalled the phone update and it was still randomly rebooting so I backed up the stuff that I needed and just did a factory reset. I have been a full day on my phone without any problems. I did a factory reset twice, just in case, for some crazy reason, the phone still had a problem, I wiped it twice! I think you'll be good with only wiping once.
Anyways to sum it all up, I did a factory reset, restored all of my backed up data from my pixel, I had about 120 apps and the phone has not had a problem since. I hope it helps someone else.

Mate, please report if you're still getting the reboots. Mine disappear for two weeks after I do a factory reset and then come back. Same happens in Safe Mode. Bug report claims it's 'Sense Key : Hardware Error [current]' and Google rep says it's a hardware issue (Toshiba's memory or something). Buganiser thread is here.

Yea, the issue is back, has been for about 2 weeks. This phone is really starting to be a pain in the ass, I can't believe that it happens so often. Did you do a warranty fix?
That's a pity. Yes, I did. Got the device roughly two and a half weeks ago. Flashed 8.0 and then sideloaded 8.1 right away. Knock on wood, all good. But there's still a report every other day in Buganiser of a phone even on 8.1 doing this.
Got mine at release. November 16. Google won't replace it either. I have a one pixel brick
I have the same problem. However, it is not frequent enough on Android P beta. But as soon as I go back to the stable build, it starts to do the same thing. Did you guys have any luck resolving this or should I send it back to the vendor I bought it from. They won't replace the device in Pakistan but may be will fix it in some manner.

Screen goes black, buttons don't respond, can get calls from other phones to me

Hi all, I have been facing a really weird problem for the past few weeks. Sometimes all of a sudden, my phone screen completely turns black, and the buttons (as well as the alert slider) stop responding. There is no indication whatsoever that it is NOT switched off. However when I try calling it from another phone, ring can be heard as if my phone is working fine. I don't understand where the problem lies. Any suggestions are welcome.
I am rooted with Magisk 19.3, Riru-EdXposed 0.4.5.1 Sandhook, Riru-Core v19.5.
Edit: Android Pie. OOS 9.5.10.GM21AA
I had this problem recently when accessing certain apks. Reflashing the firmware sorted it for me.
no root same problem to me after I update from Android 9 to Android 10

Thanks I will try doing that.
Same problem here when opening quite a few apps. Issue didn't start until I updated to Android 10 (and rooted), on a converted T-Mobile variant. Wonder if that is the source of our problem. I'm sorely tempted to use the MSM tool and go back on TMO's Android 9 (and pray for a official update to 10). Unless someone can find a solution to this, rebooting the phone every time I want to open certain apps is a real pain.

It definitely is a A10 issue as I too have started to have this issue when opening games and ram extensive apps. A workaround is to open the game or app in split screen mode and once the app has started you can switch back to fullscreen mode or start the app from recents. That has worked for me 100% of the time. The 10.0.1 update seemed to make it worse because you have to reboot the phone to escape the black screen were as at first you could use gestures to escape the app.

Good idea using split screen, I'll have to start doing that for the time being. I moved over to Open Beta 3 and the issue is still there and worst as with 10.0.1. Hopefully OnePlus can nail this bug soon. It's turning a otherwise amazing phone into a headache.
I have the same problem. Running 10.0 rooted. For me, this has only happened when opening Youtube Vanced. One clever solution is to enable "Quickly turn on camera" and doublepress power if this happens. This launches camera and returns the screen to normal.

Experiencing this too, it does seem to be related to certain .apks, how bizarre is that? Really don't want to re-flash as I am encrypted... Can you dirty-flash with an encrypted system and not loose any data?

I reflashed through TWRP and all data was fine. I'm encrypted too.
But it goes without saying, make sure you do a backup before flashing anything
