Screen goes black, buttons don't respond, can get calls from other phones to me - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi all, I have been facing a really weird problem for the past few weeks. Sometimes all of a sudden, my phone screen completely turns black, and the buttons (as well as the alert slider) stop responding. There is no indication whatsoever that it is NOT switched off. However when I try calling it from another phone, ring can be heard as if my phone is working fine. I don't understand where the problem lies. Any suggestions are welcome.
I am rooted with Magisk 19.3, Riru-EdXposed 0.4.5.1 Sandhook, Riru-Core v19.5.
Edit: Android Pie. OOS 9.5.10.GM21AA

I had this problem recently when accessing certain apks. Reflashing the firmware sorted it for me.

no root same problem to me after I update from Android 9 to Android 10

Thanks I will try doing that.

Same problem here when opening quite a few apps. Issue didn't start until I updated to Android 10 (and rooted), on a converted T-Mobile variant. Wonder if that is the source of our problem. I'm sorely tempted to use the MSM tool and go back on TMO's Android 9 (and pray for a official update to 10). Unless someone can find a solution to this, rebooting the phone every time I want to open certain apps is a real pain.

It definitely is a A10 issue as I too have started to have this issue when opening games and ram extensive apps. A workaround is to open the game or app in split screen mode and once the app has started you can switch back to fullscreen mode or start the app from recents. That has worked for me 100% of the time. The 10.0.1 update seemed to make it worse because you have to reboot the phone to escape the black screen were as at first you could use gestures to escape the app.

Good idea using split screen, I'll have to start doing that for the time being. I moved over to Open Beta 3 and the issue is still there and worst as with 10.0.1. Hopefully OnePlus can nail this bug soon. It's turning a otherwise amazing phone into a headache.

I have the same problem. Running 10.0 rooted. For me, this has only happened when opening Youtube Vanced. One clever solution is to enable "Quickly turn on camera" and doublepress power if this happens. This launches camera and returns the screen to normal.

Experiencing this too, it does seem to be related to certain .apks, how bizarre is that? Really don't want to re-flash as I am encrypted... Can you dirty-flash with an encrypted system and not loose any data?

I reflashed through TWRP and all data was fine. I'm encrypted too.
But it goes without saying, make sure you do a backup before flashing anything

Cyanogen OS 12.1 occasionally crashing

So an issue I've had since moving from Oxygen to Cyanogen is that every now and again the system will lock up, and the only way to get it back is to press and hold the power button until it does a forced restart. Today it did it while I was paying for something using Android Pay and it asked me to enter my lock code. II drew my pattern and the system froze.
It's fine this before when using the camera, playing games, etc. It's pretty random.
I've also been having Bluetooth issues, but that's another story.
Did you do dirty flash?
Anyway, I recommend to do a clean flash and see the problem resolves or not.

I too am experiencing system freezes when using Android Pay. I was on a custom rom, but used fastboot to come back to stock. Seems to be a bug in Android Pay. I have already contacted Android Pay support and they are looking into it. They seem to think it's a bug as well.

I did a clean flash. I was originally running CM nighties and had to relock the bootloader and all that good stuff.

I'm not inclined to believe that this is a Pay-specific bug since it's also happened with other, seemingly random applications.

Maybe my problem is different then. It only happens when trying to use Android Pay for me. I would say Android Pay works 75% of the time. The other 25% results in a freeze.
I didn't realize you could use pattern lock and android pay..

Marshmallow problems with spontaneous launching of Google Now, taking over device.

My phone has been misbehaving since it upgraded the OS to Marshmallow. It was primarily occurring with the Google Now app and it would take over the phone and flash up and off the screen and whilst this was going on, the phone is busy vibrating, the screen became unresponsive and generally I couldn't do anything with it during these episodes. I stopped it sending to the screen and then it was the Google app that kept flashing up, starting with a round circle coming from the app drawer icon. It has got worse over the last few days to the point that it might take me ten minutes before I could get access to the caller to make a call and even trying to shut down the device was near impossible because the confirmation box never stayed on the screen long enough to answer the question and then it didn't come back. Yesterday, after many tries to restart, it finally restarted in safe mode. If it was related to an app that I downloaded, it should have stopped then but it didn't. When I was able to get into settings, I then went to apps and then disabled google app as this was the one starting up and flashing the screen non stop. I was then asked if I wanted to replace it with a factory version which I did but I also left it disabled. The problem has continued but not as ferociously with the screen becoming unresponsive at times while the buzzing from the vibrate still occurring. I have looked up various forums but haven't found any that have similar problems described. I checked the screen overlay settings and they are enabled and that seems to be the main problem with marshmallow. I'm looking for some advice but realise that this might be too basic for this forum? When you updated to Nougat, what method did you use to update? Did you update via OTA? We're you rooted when you did it?
Have you tried booting to recovery and factory resetting and wiping cache then rebooting?

It was an update that appeared on my notifications and I thought it was a small bug fix update and didn't realize that it would replace the entire OS. I just allowed the update and then realized what had happened. I think it is Marshmallow that it updated to but originally the app drawer was paginated and accessed by side swipes whereas the system now is a long page of apps moved up and down. I don't know if it was rooted and I assume that that means it wasn't.
I was trying to avoid a factory reset but I did wipe the cache and rebooting. When google apps is disabled, the interruptions are less often and not for as long but it still went into a complete meltdown of a screen appearing and disappearing at such a rate that nothing can be done with it. It won't show a video because of the interruptions.

Unfortunately, I think you're gonna have to factory reset in stock recovery because there's obviously a conflict with something you already had on the device and it isn't playing nice with something that was in the update.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I have resigned myself to that although it does not seem to be anything that I downloaded to the phone as it occurred in safe mode too. I was just hoping that there was a fix out there but obviously it is not a widespread occurrence.

It could have been something in system that got changed during the update but the data from before the change is still there and conflicting with whatever changes were made. Some kind of saved system data that can only be wiped by factory reset or reflashing.

I did a factory reset, lost a lot of photos that had started being saved on the phone and not the sdcard after the upgrade to Marshmallow. Have had to accept that but unfortunately the bizarre behavior did not stop and it continues on and off, sometimes so bad that I cannot dial a number on it and other times it happens but I can get in between the action and dial or send a text etc. I have gradually been stopping things like notifications from google apps and traffic reports from google maps (this may have had a good effect) and anything that might be doing constant checks. It seems to have quietened down over the last day or so and I even got to play a game on it but the next option is to send it away to an engineer. I just thought that I would let you know the outcome of the factory reset.

Galaxy s10e. Lags after update to android 10

Hello to all. unfortunately after the update to android 10 some lag appeared that remind me a lot of the s8 .... it's a nightmare that haunts me. I did not reset and I would like to avoid it, could someone tell me if it has been affected by this problem and if it is possible to remedy it without resetting? thank you
I would suggest first wiping the cache from stock recovery mode. See how it runs and if it picks up. You do also have to ensure apps are updated as needed.
Mine lagged too after the oneui 2 update. I've done a reset and at first it was smooth before I restored apps and settings. But after restoring it started to lag especially on home and recents screen. I found a solution to turn off adaptive power saving. Now it's super smooth
Edit: I found out that the lag comes from accessibility services. Mine was AutoSkip. After I turned it off home and recents becomes smooth again.
So, did u advice to avoid the update? I bought mine today and I was wondering if it was worth it...

If you just bought the device, I recommend to not install all your apps yet, but first update all way up to Android 10 (keep updating until there’s no new updates available), and then make a factory reset. After this you can install your things normally.
I've made this process and now my S10e runs like a butter!
EDIT: As mentioned by @kdanina, turn OFF adaptative power saving, but let adaptative battery ON. They seem to be similar but in practice the first one is flawed on our device.

Glitches on stock rom, brand new phone

So I got this phone about 2 weeks ago, brand new from oneplus. I haven't been tempted to do anything to it (bootloader locked, complete stock, no root)
One of the glitches is it'll stop scrolling on some web pages, especially from my Google feed. You need to back out and reenter the site. Then it works fine. This is the one that occurs often.
The other night I was using youtube. I tried to put it in pip mode. It froze in a weird position, not pip. It looked more like the recents but you couldn't exit it. I tried everything till I finally had to reboot to fix it.
Then last night I was watching Netflix. I tried to fast forward a bit and it began to buffer. It happens sometimes but again I had to reboot. The app wouldn't let me back out. I suppose I might've been able to pull down qs and go into settings to force quit (maybe) but this is a brand new phone. Also it's the 12/256 model.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues? I'm on the latest Android 10.
I have the N2013 12/256gb I had the same issue with chrome had to back out to get it working, not had the other issues thought. I have updated to O os 11 now see if this helps.
Had the same problem with chrome, switched to duckduckgo instead, and problem was gone.
Chrome has an issue with me, no matter what i try

Thanks. I had actually narrowed it down to chrome just before I read your replies.
I switched to Chrome beta and so far so good.
The youtube glitch only happened once. Did you receive the Android 11 ota or did you download it? I'm still waiting. I heard it's best to wait but this is the first time in years I haven't installed my own updates. Bootloader is still locked, no root, stock recovery.
It hasn't been bad so far.
Sometimes pulling down the statusbar works for the chrome freezes too
is there an option to change WebView types in Developer Options?
I downloaded 11 from the oxygen updater app, always do since it being faster getting the updates.
Yes you can change webview if you like, but to my knowledge you have to use a magisk script for it (don't knpw any other way), ive never used it tho.

Question OneUI crashes

Does anyone else have crashes for oneUI ? Fort me it happens like twice a week on my exynos model.
I'm so disappointed with this phone to be honest. It's stutters now and than and to many crashes in various apps.
I'm assuming must of it is due to Samsung chip.
I have also whacked for nightly restart even thought it's stupid i think.
Did this happen from day one?
If not it's likely an app, update or settings issue.
Still that's pretty unstable... it could be a hardware issue.

try factory reset with disabling of trashy preinstalled apps (disabled 144 on mine ), then install your apps (not restore)
adb app control
It wasn't happened on mine ( SD variant). Try to factory reset the phone, download and re-install all of your app instead of restore them (even with the phone setting). It may help to solve issues
I appreciate the tips but seriously guys, factory reset and redownload of this many apps i have is like a weeks work! I only download the stuff i use (and 99% payed apps as i hate ads). Not to mention i might loose some data thanks to how Android save data. This is not 2010. I hope modern phones are more stable then that.
If this was iPhone then i could simply restore easy but with Android its not as simple.
If there is no other way i wait for some more samsung firmware updates.
It has not happened this week so lets see.
I notice some specific apps are specially bad like LinkedIn hangs allot. Tapatalk wont work even with this forum and gives error. Maybe some of these apps make the launcher go nuts....
Try using a different launcher, to see if that stops the crashing

Only saying it to see if its the launcher that's causing the crashes.

Yes there has been 2-3 updates since last time and so far it has not crashed so it seems to be fixed. Cheers
