Nexus 5 consistently having apps crash

Lately my Nexus 5 has been having some issues. I first started noticing this when I'd get artifacts popping up while on chrome. Then during reboot, play services would crash, and sometimes the launcher would refuse to start. Then other apps like Hangouts would refuse to let me view messages without a app crash. Even 3rd party apps have crashed on me.
I've done a full wipe and put stock 4.4.2, three different times now and within a day I get the same symptoms all over again.
This has been going on for over a week, I have absolutely no idea what to do now.
Any ideas? Is perhaps the storage bad? Any way to test it? Or what should I do.

Flash clean stock and don't install a single app for those few days and see what happens.
If nothing, install just a few apps at a time per day. If it suddenly starts....you'll know its one of the few apps you just installed.

Are you flashing a custom kernel with it? Are you undervolting at all, running art? I specifically ask for undervolting, cause that will cause things to crash | reboot.

No, no custom kernel. Everything I got was from googles factory image site. https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/hammerhead-kot49h-factory-02006b99.tgz
And I've never undervolted before. I could root and perhaps increase the clock speed. Also not running ART. I did a few months ago, but switched back.

Well aside from rooting, best you can do is force stop all those apps, particularly the ones that are crashing specifically, then clear those caches from the menu. After you've done all your problem apps, reboot.

If he did a full wipe and installed a fresh stock image....caches aren't the issue. Its probably one app wreaking havoc. Lol

Lag problem

Anyone else has had lag problems ?
I don't know if It's just my phone, but for me it's unbearable, Sometimes I have to wait 10 or more seconds until the phone loads all the icons (in the main screen) .
Sometimes I tried to write a whatsapp and I've to wait again some seconds until the keyboard appears. (Even when you start to write doesn't respond, and some seconds after write all the letters the same time).
or if I try to open any app. it's the same .. I've to wait some seconds while the phone is completely frozen.
it could happens in any moment. but it's very strange because the 65% of the time the phone works fine.
I try that don't install heavy app and I don't use the phone to play any game.
I tried to change the settings (Power saving) but in any option this improves.
Anybody has any idea about what could be happening ?
I'm trying to wait until new update and I'm hoping that this improves the performance ... but I'm thinking seriously to sell the phone

the mate 7 is laggy (it's actually a software problem , not hardware, but huawei is not capable of fixing it)
for your particular problem, 10 seconds seems like a lot.
you could try toubleshooting by uninstalling apps.
but the only way to be sure is by doing a factory reset

Yes, I tried to uninstall a lot of apps, For example Facebook (Now I'm using little Facebook), and even I changed the keyboard for the default.
I don't have too much apps installed, some radios, some photo editor ... .
If I restart the phone works fine all the day, but in some hours the phone gets laggy again ...
It's a shame because I like a lot this phone, but I'm thinking to change it !
I don't know what to do because I don't know other similar phone, this is perfect for me .

My mate 7 isn't laggy at all...It's same as note 3 that I have had.

I have L09 never had any lag, everything loads fast, with 0.5 animation speed phone this phone fly.I have it for 1 year and 2 months , not a new user

I think the upcoming marshmallow update will reborn this device again and solve the lag problems.
Until then I really recommend changing to the Google now launcher. It makes a very big difference indeed. I have tried most launchers but I have recently concluded that Google now launcher is best. Set fastest animation speed in developer options as well.
You set Google launcher as default launcher under manage apps under default apps

Mate7 L09 331 b lollipop root with twrp no bloatware, Nova launcher prime and changes of governor an inteligent mode ondemand... and normal mode with performance governor my Mate is a super rocket!!

Yes, can anyone explain this? I had a look and saw the option there. Doing a TWRP backup so I can test it, although on B331 the phone runs nice anyway.
The problem with performance on Kitkat seems mostly to do with the Kernel and how the two processors are controlled.
Edit:
Did some Googling, DO NOT use TWRP to "fix permissions" as it doesn't necessarily fix them, it can brick your OS!

It will brick your phone if you fix selinux permissions but as long as you don't check that you'll be fine
I fix the permissions everytime I restore a back up and I have done boot comparisons and there's a difference
If you do wanna try it you have to go into twrp recovery->advanced->fix permissions make sure selinux is unchecked (it should be by default)
And proceed to fix permissions

I know that it doesn't have relation but since I left to use hangouts the phones started to work better without any kind of lag...

Default Launcher Problem

Hi all,
I'm totally stuck with this one, I'm using NovaLauncher as my default home app, at least i want to, but it keeps getting reset / reverted to the Huawei Home app no matter what i seem to do whenever i reboot the phone and nobody seems to have an soloution, that i can find anyway.
I've changed default app (apps > settings > default app settings > launcher) and (default app settings > special access > write system settings) switching NovaLauncher to Yes / Huawei Home to No. I've also tried "Aggressive Desktop" in NovaLauncher Settings > Advanced, none of which solve it.
I've read before that having Bluetooth enabled can cause this, mine just happens whenever i reboot, it's EXTREMELY annoying. I've only noticed this problem after i had a few OTA updates. I'm currently on the latest update it's giving me which is BLN-L21C432B377.
Really hoping somebody has a method to fix this, it's drivin me crazy

Strange. I am on EMUI 8 and no such problems. Maybe try reinstalling the app?

I've seen this problem be posted a couple of times on XDA but they were in different Honor device sections i think. I'll try reinstalling now and let you know how it goes :good:

FWIW, I'm having the same issue. I feel like it started with the August (July?) security update. I haven't tried a reinstall of Nova because I'd rather have to take 1 minute to set Nova as default with every time I reboot vs. take the time big hit to get all my other preferences (desktop, icons, etc) sorted following a remove/reinstall of Nova. But yes, it's driving me crazy, too.

Well bugger me sideways lol, sometimes you end up doing all the more complicated things and neglect the most obvious! I reinstalled Nova Launcher and everything has been fine since, rebooting etc, working like it should, cheers Mannan :good:
Hey hereusethis try reinstalling too and yeah i'm sure it started happening around the same time frame for me too! Don't worry it's painless, in the Nova Launcher Settings scroll right to the bottom you'll see Backup & Import Settings. Make a backup there, uninstall the app / reinstall and go back down to Backup but this time choose Import, all your settings etc will come straight back
So far so good, hope it sticks, like i said though it always reset the launcher after rebooting the phone, hasn't done that and i rebooted plenty to test it. Thanks again :good:

Apps Ghost Lingering on Home screen

My note 20 ultra is having an issue where certain times when I go back to home screen, the app I was on leaves a ghost image on the screen. Only way to seem to get rid of it is to reboot device. Have to do this once a day. Tried with Nova and One UI but no dice fixing without reboot.
See my screen shot. Is there another way to refresh your home screen a la Windows?

it's not a pop-up view? is it random behavior or did you have to follow certain steps in order for this to happen?

Did you set your phone up from scratch or did you transfer data from another phone. If you transferred from another phone there's been numerous post here about bugs and they were fixed with a FDR.

From the boot menu clear the Sytem Cache... this cures many glitches.
Find the app doing it and clear its cache and data if need be.
If that's the only issue with that load and nothing gets it done, disable the pop up notifications/overlay permissions for that app. Not sure how it's displayed in settings on Q.

Problem is it's not just one app. The screen you see is the dialer. Also happened twice using Microsoft Teams

Could the MS apks be the root cause?
I don't use any of the MS apks, in fact they're all blocked.
If you do a hard reset and it comes back, you'll have gained nothing. Most times it's a settings issue or a misbehaving 3rd party app.
Have had the most trouble with 3rd party launchers. Best to avoid them as they can goof up a lot including boot up.
>Keep playing with it< and try some Google searches as others will many times have the same issues.
Try package blocking suspect apks and see if that ferrets it out. Use Device Manager to see what apps are loaded in the memory cache when it goes nuts.
I've used this to track down a nasty one, once I cleared the data on the right system apk all was good.
Best of all if it happens again, I know what to do.
A last resort before a hard reset is to do a setting reset however this is a global settings nuke.
Again, clear the system cache and then suspected apk caches however sometimes you'll need to clear their data as well. PD MDM is a better option to clear apk caches/data in as it leaves no nulls or something that clearing the same in settings DOES.
Sounds skewy but been there, done that.

Back up everything to Samsung cloud and do a FDR. If that doesn't fix the issue just restore and you're right back where you were.
There have been several reports of bugs on this forum and they were mostly due to restoring data from another phone.

Ok. I just did the memory clear someone suggested and I am waiting to see it happen again to see which apps are open when it happens again to do selective uninstalls. If it doesn't work I'll go FDR unfortunately

Hopefully it might fix it but you should never transfer data from your old phone to your new phone, it just causes problems. I've been doing this since 2009 and have learned the hard way.

Yeppers, I have my hard drive cloned too. Also kind of like belt and suspenders I also have two external drives with backups on both.

Update: had it happen 2 more times in the last week. Just did the FDR so we'll see. If it happens again, uninstalling Nova.

3rd party launchers can put you in boot loop hell.
Had it happen twice in 2 weeks.
Was thinking it might be another app but on the 3rd reload I stayed with 1 UI...
2 months later still stable as a rock.
If a launcher is acting even a little slow or twitchy... ditch it.

I would have already stuck with one ui had it been a little more customizable. Lack of vertical scroll app drawer and 3rd party icons killed it for me

I don't like the bloody white icon labels...
1 UI is fast and the most stable. After seeing all manner of screw ups on 3rd pretty launchers and 2 back to back reloads... done.
Got rid of most of the bloody white except the page indicator. Samsung morons... even with only a home page it still shows, jeeeeezse!
Nothing in the Good Lock apps to remove them either.

Periodic reboots on android 10

Am I really the only one whose Moto 5G phone periodically crashes and reboots on stock android 10?
My wife has a Moto G7 that was fine on android 9 but also now periodically crashes and reboots after the ota update to android 10.

Factory reset... reload.
It's probably a 3rd party app that's not compatible.
OTA upgrades/updates tend to break things... I disable them.

That would be painful to do. I am not rooted (yet) and it would be tedious to re-install everything without Titanium backups.
I was just struck by these reboots happening on both my wife's moto G7 and my own brand new moto 5G.
I wish there was a way to log what process is running just before the crashes occur. It is something running in the background because the foreground activity is never the same. The phone suddenly slows and then crashes. Like a stack overflow or memory problem.

You'll need to track it down then.
If it's a erroneous hidden user setting or something got corrupted you may never find it. A factory reset in this case is probably the best bet.
Do something before it boot loops... instability is the only warning you may get.
Make sure all critical data is backup redundantly, now if not already.

I have everything backed up repeatedly, so that's OK. It is probably some setting. I also have a firewall (Netguard) that I've used for years on other phones with no problem. It may be blocking some app trying to repeatedly call home. Because I've never had this problem except on moto phones I suspect it might be a Moto app (display, etc). I may disable those for a while and see if that makes a difference.

Because it reboots unless you have other clues it may be hard to find.
Maybe last firewall entries before reboot will give you a clue.

But I've used Nova on several other phones with no problems.
If now that I disabled the Moto apps I still get reboots, I'll re-enable the Moto apps and disable Nova to use the native launcher and see if that makes a difference.

I run Samsung's so One UI.
2 years ago I had a 3rd party launcher boot loop my N10+ twice, back to back full reloads days apart One UI is actually a snappy fast launcher that uses little power. I prefer over Nova for a number of reasons.
There may be a glitch in Nova the update induced. I don't mess with the firmware once I have a system that runs well. It can be very time consuming to do so. Updates/upgrades have caused and cost me more far time then any malware ever did on Androids. I don't listen to the Gookill scare hype anymore...

That may well be it!
I'll work my way to switching back to the built-in moto native launcher in a few days. Sooner if I get another reboot.

Interesting. I'll keep that as one of the things to try. I'll actually try it first as I like Nova.
It will take time to know because the periodic reboots only happen every 2-3 days. At least I have a series of paths to follow. Thanks.

Check ram usage for an app with a memory leak, never saw this on an Android, once on an Apple 3rd party app.
Do you reboot once a day? Or does it happen anyway?
You shouldn't have to do so but something's not playing nice.
