PSP games on Shield? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Downloading PSP games on torrent and play them on Android via emulator how safe is that?
I mean, you can't really purchase PSP games for Android, right?

Not a matter of safe but I Donno I guess your other option is to rip them from umd. Emulators and Roms have not been legal exactly for an exceptionally long time now...

Clarification- emulators are legal. ROMs, however, are not, unless you backed them up yourself, for your own personal use, and you do not distribute the backed up image.

Do I need a PSP to backup a game or is a PC enough? If it is, I could just buy PSP games..

what do you mean by safe ?
you're not gonna go to jail just for download some psp isos, but if you gonna do it "legal" you gonna need a psp jailbreaked just to run a homebrew to convert the umd discs to iso files, wich makes no sense to me cause if you already have a psp runing games why would you gonna emulate them on the shield tablet ?

yes

To backup a umd it requires a hacked PSP and a copy of the game it will rip onto the memory card and from there you can take the up to 1.8gb file and use in an emu.
Otherwise hacking eboot images is more complicated. There is a tool to convert psx images to PSP compatible.
So long story short alot of these games are download only there is no legit way to get them so grey sites are your only option as for viruses likely from the sites in the form of infected ads also if your ISP monitors this type of file they can send c&d and terminate your account.
It is rather unlikely that PSP games will be monitored and the sources I can't name here most are dead as nobody really cares about PSP Sony has discontinued it and it's not doing vita many favors these days either.

@mirrin I appreciate your explanation. Thank you.
Do you think there will be official PSP ports for Android like they do with PC games?
Yes, with "safe" I was referring to viruses, malware etc.

For some titles yes for most no. Sony doesn't seem to be into that yet but I would check out the psn stuff they have for the Xperia devices... Unfortunately the psm service was discontinued last year. It used to be an app store for the Xperia play which was a PSP go merged with a cellphone

Porting PSP Emulator
That would be lovely.
Wouldn't mind an official SE app for that, if they have the same library as for the go from day 1

pretty sure the hardware will not be able to support emulating the psp system.
Definitely not. Even a lot of high-end PCs fight with PSP emulation so unless Sony make it native, you prolly will have to live with what you get.

Emulators being brought off market?

Hi!
What i want is emulators for snes, nes, n64 and psone. There has been several of these on android market, but because they breach a licence agreement by earning cash on the emulators, they are taken off. This happens with -oid emulators and with tiger emulators.
Anyone have any working emulators? Why can't they be on market for free? I feel scammed having payed for several of tbe -oid programs, but now I am unable to get them any more how was I supposed to know about the licence when I bought these apps?

No, it wasn't because they were making money off of them. I'm not sure where people get this idea that app makers should never ask for money when they've provided sought-after services. PSX4droid has been made free since being pulled from the Market, and it's still not allowed back on there. It's more likely to have been pulled because of legal concerns by allowing emulators to be sold there. It's not illegal, no, but it's sketchy and makes the Market look less friendly to video game software and (in the case of Sony) hardware developers. Companies are going to be more inclined to develop ports to Android if there aren't emulators raining on their parade.
And I'm not sure, but aren't requests for emulators against the rules here? I know roms are, but not entirely certain about the emulators.
The N64 emulator works great ... especially with the Wii Remote app !
Some of the old games played with a Wii Remote and HDMId out to a 46 inch LCD ... retro heaven
some of these emulators had been there since the beginning.
It's a lame move to remove them.
especially if they are not linking you to illegal content.
I agree that illegal software should be removed, but i cant see how emulator for outdated patents is illegal.
And @thracia yes, it was because they were making money off it. They didnt create the programs themselves, they just stole free software, and made money off it. The creators of the software rightfully asked for it to be removed.

They can be, check out Snes9x EX in the official android market.
The developers of the other emulators you mentioned are greedy and stole open source code. They violated GPL by not giving credit to the sources.
Look at console emulators for windows, linux, etc. Not one is sold as a commercial product.
thanks for the help!
I don't think emulators hurt anyone but Sony considering they have a PS phone out there.

Mixy, the developer for the -oid emulators has put them up for free on SlideME, and alternate market, specially to provide updates for the people who paid for them in the first place. I know it's not as convenient, but it's the best he can do, I believe.
Does anyone know a TRUSTWORTHY site where you can get the free tiger emulators (like tiger (gba|gbc|snes))

Hell ANYONE running a Rooted Play could put it up ASLONG as they dont need login or have a licence file.. because then people will be trying to hack that to be free too!
There ARE free launchers of MC out there anyhow.. So maybe someone will make an aftermarket launcher thats free based off the paid one? just as with Windows?
I run it on Linux normally (On teh Toshiba laptop) and Windows from USBstick normally (With "PocketLauncher" etc)
Im guessing they will charge you to buy the app unlike the PC business model where you just buy a premium account.
I wouldnt be too happy about paying for the game again. If its just classic mode without multiplayer then I will give it a pass. if it does have multiplayer then I may change my mind
Guys, if you want more good games on the Play, pirating the biggest game to come to it isn't going to help. Just means we'll get less games that will support it. Just put down a few bucks and show your support.
As far as I know, the game will evolve just like the PC version had over the years.

[Idea]PSXperia + PSX4Droid

Let's see:
PSXperia works substituting ZPAKs and APKs from the preloaded Crash Bandicoot ones. The resulting emulator seems to work with some games better than others. However, we're left hanging because we would need updates from Sony, which is unwilling to make them.
I've thought of something: we DO have an open source PSX emulator ported to Android. Would it be possible/desirable to somehow combine the two projects, so that we load things in the PSXPeria way and yet we get to have a more compatible emulator than what the official thing from Sony is?
I was thinking the same the other day.... you would think that the best solution would be a hybrid of the native emulator with another PSX android project.
as the native psx emulator is not open source, we have no source code to combine with another emulator

When this project was first announced, the question was: Can it be a better emulator than FPSE, which is quite honestly an amazing piece of software. It plays almost every single game, and at 90%+ speed, with small issues here and there.
The hypothetical answer was yes, because crash bandicoot plays SO amazingly well (it really does, it looks sexy too), its a superior psx emulator. But, unfortunately, we have found that Sony crafted their emulator on a GAME-BY-GAME basis...and therefore the emulator is actually a piece of sh*t lol (the sound seems to be the only thing that is absolutely superior)
I say we just move on. FPSE serves the purpose of playing psx games on xperia QUITE WELL. and is CONSTANTLY IMPROVING.
Now, if n64oid could just get itself up to par...

I find it a stretch to call the Emulator a piece of sh*t when firstly the games it does run right it runs almost perfectly, and second it was never intended to be used as something to inject any PS iso into. I would bet money that the devs at Sony who have access to the source code probably fix the emulator for whatever game they want to run in less than a day and can have it out on the market. In fact for all we know they are readying a huge library of games for the launch of the PS Suite. And once its fixed for the game it not only runs great it looks better than ever.
I'd say the emulator is a nice little feat of programming, its not the emulators fault we are using it not as intended.

With all due respect, I don't know why you constantly put down the native emulator in various threads regarding PSXperia and hold up fpse so highly. While I admit the native emulator is not as good as we all hoped, it stills runs a good amount of games (and even more with software rendering) and doesn't cost money. Also, who gives you the right to say "let's move on". Again, no offense, but I think the person who has the most say about the project would be the developer, aka me (and I also have my doubts about the project's life but for another reason). I know you mean no harm in your words, but I take it personally that you think the project is a waste of time.

You are ACTUALLY the FPSE poster boy.
The native emulator is not **** and if it could be modeled to play any game it would be leaps and bounds ahead of any emulator on the market.
I don't know about you but most of my favorite games run perfectly on the emulator and what wasn't working before does now with the software rendering.
I believe this project is still live as testing goes ahead my only concern about the project dying is Sony actually blocking that version of the emulator from their phones.

Sony are stupid tbh.
The Xperia Play obviously has the capability to run PS1 and PSP Games very well.
If they made a PS1 and PSP emulator and had around 50 ports of the best games on each system, the Xperia Play would be flying off the shelves.
But they didn't. Now the community is left to develop this most basic thing for themselves, and Sony blocks it from happening meaning phone sales aren't as high as they could be.
Gay. Gay. Gay.
This phone almost hit the mark, but i am beginning to think it will be the phone known for having the biggest potential, that it didn't quite reach.

What you're talking about is the PlayStation Suite which is coming. I tend to agree it was kinda stupid to release this before that was ready, but then again this phones hardware was a bit behind when it was released, if they waited till October or November when the suite is out it would be way behind.

Neither one of those games is "licensed to Nintendo". Capcom and Konami have created versions of them for Nintendo's systems, but the original releases still stand. Now Sony can't just re-publish the games on a different platform without permission, but if they wanted to they certainly can just ask (as they have done with other games). Its basically free money to those companies, I'm pretty sure they won't say no.

Xperia Play hits 400 games, and I've created a website to database them all!

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a very big deal for smartphone gaming. As a previous iDevice owner who noticed the potential for games on smartphones was exploding, it was pretty sad to see that that growth was stifled by touch-screen controls limiting what we can do and how deep a smartphone game is allowed to be.
We've seen physical gamepad solutions try to get smartphone gaming out of the "touch-screen gaming ghetto," devices such as the iControlPad, Gametel Controller and 60Beat controller... and they've all had such poor software support that they've pretty much failed to be anything more than emulator assistants.
That is, until the Xperia Play came along last year.
While it may have been initially written off by those who (incorrectly) presumed it's specs wouldn't be able to handle newer games, Xperia Play's picked up loads of momentum since it's release, got tons of AAA developer names backing it (such as Rockstar, Namco, Square Enix, EA, Sega, etc), got every benchmark gaming title on the platform under it's belt, and grew from an initial 40-60 games to 400 faster than any button-based gaming handheld in the entire history of gaming.
And I'm here to provide a database for Xperia Play gamers worldwide that databases them all!
XPERIA PLAY GAMER | ENTER

It also features a mobile version that serves as an multi-market integrated method of linking directly to the specific Xperia PLAY version of any given game. You won't have to worry about whether you need to go to the EA Flexion Store, Gameloft Wapshop or find the specific version in the Google Play Store because I've taken care of all that - I sort of anticipate that this mobile version will become even more valuable than the desktop site.
TLRtheory said:

As you can tell, this is a very rough project.
The database is only half done, things are very messy if you aren't using Google Chrome (especially on IE), a lot of the sorting options don't work yet, many functions aren't implemented and that may not even be it's permanent address.
But what it's planned to be is a completely Xperia PLAY centralized site that's major focus is to show what the Xperia PLAY brings to the table.
The Xperia PLAY game list I've created seems to have caught quite a bit of attention and made something of an impact, but the way it's designed means it can't possibly accommodate more than 400 games - this site will showcase everything, link to video media, offer a complete forum for each and every game as well as display Xperia PLAY-oriented articles (such as showing how drastic the percentage growth of Xperia PLAY games has been since launch, showing how it can run games like Dead Space just as well as dual-core devices such as the Galaxy S2, noting how it's the only current handheld gaming system that has an overwhelming majority of it's games rating higher than lower, and so on). It'll also feature a mobile version so people looking to get non-market games will have no hassle.
As one could indicate, it's not even close to being done. About all you can do now is play with the scrolling featured games list and click on "GAMES" to display the complete list of games. But feel free to offer comments/suggestions.

Most delicious.
Looks great so far!
Thanks for all the kind words! The project's progressing rather quickly, but at the same time it's far from being what I want it to be. Everything's being coded from scratch so I move slowly, but get more control over how this progresses.
I just wanna play a little awareness-raising game; it's quite a shocker to be on engadget or such, and every time Xperia PLAY is brought up, you see someone who's amazed to find out that it's grown from a couple tens to hundreds of games in such a short time.
So I figured the best way to illustrate it is by hitting them in the face with a huge patchwork of games. Glad to see you like it so far.
May I suggest using Drupal to do the website? It's so much faster and easier...
I can even help you with if you decide to do it.
Cool.
You know what would make it even better. If you upload some psxperia games to the website.

Yeah, that and I'm sort of going for a theme here where I keep it *pure*.
That means no PSX, no emulators, not even OnLive. I'm trying to show that Xperia PLAY's game library has a large quantity of quality releases without having to piggyback off systems of past generations.

Interesting idea, I am a little bit surprised about no OnLive (maybe you could just add a forum for emulators/OnLive (then again, there could be a problem with people requesting games they don't own, and all the legal ramifications that could include))

sorry, i don't wont to be rude, but the code of your site is orrible, with a lot of very stupid error: for example you don't have the html tag or the doctype tag, but the main problem is that you use a lot of deprecated tag such as center or font (and probably this is the problem because the site look well only in Google Chrome).
ps: sorry for my bad English

...did you miss the part about it being incomplete? I know what's messy, what's missing and what I need to do before this is clean, organized and standardized... and well beyond anything you've told me, at that. What you see there is likely not even gonna be the final layout, it was thrown together very hurriedly just so that a frame would exist for the database to output to.

Interesting idea, I am a little bit surprised about no OnLive (maybe you could just add a forum for emulators/OnLive (then again, there could be a problem with people requesting games they don't own, and all the legal ramifications that could include))

I'll definitely be giving them their due attention, but I'm treating OnLive in the same regard as I do an emulator since that's essentially what it is.

Nah, only one of the links are clickable sans subcategories. I got a huge list of things I know needs to be fixed after I've finished off the database, I just posted a bit so people could get a preview since the "patchwork of games" is definitely the major theme of that site.
EDIT: ...and it seems a couple thousand visits in, my traffic's overloaded. I'll prob just buy a damn domain.

Thanks so much for this man!!! Brilliant!
nice site, always glad to see people taking interest in our phone!
with onLive! i agree and disagree. it is basically an "emulator" but its one that you could play Dirt3 on your pc then when you are on the go you can pickup right where you left off on your phone and get nearly the same experience.
i still haven't tried onlive yet but as they keep making things smoother and hearing more feedback from the xperia play people, i might take the plunge, adds a lot of games to our phone
