Going to buy S7. Is it worth it? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi. After a year of having my S5 mini I am done. It is old and using 2012 processor in 2016 is not a good idea. So I looked at the phones and I decided to buy S7(Exynos model) for a quite some time.
BY YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE, can you say:
Will it run 3D (like C-OPS) games on max graphics on 60FPS?(Or 60FPS at all?(with low graphics etc.))
What are the most common bugs/glitches/problems on it?
Are they that bad that you would recommend to avoid S7?
If the device is not good by your opinion, can you suggest a different one?
Is it worth the price?
Why do I ask these specific questions? Because I don't have enough money to change the phone every year or even earlier so I want to have high end device that would handle minimum 2 years.
P.S.(if it will help) I can pick it up at electronics shop in my country for 400 euro(discount!).

I think the phone is worth the price, but you also have the one plus 3.. s7 runs all games on max graphics easily.
Im in love with the phone and im sure that it will last few years
And.. I bought it one month ago and until now i had 0 bugs and errors.. non rooted btw

Well it doesn't have discount on my market that I buy (and others don't too) and I don't want to buy because of bigger screen (I prefer smaller phones).

I found my s7 overheating at first but then I under clocked it a bit(STILL VERY FAST AND SMOOTH) and my issue was solved. You can also try coolify.

If you ask me, yes, it is worth buying if you have a 3 year old, slow smartphone, due for an upgrade and features like 'Better Low Light Photography' and 'Water Resistance'. The phone definitely looks promising enough and looks absolutely beautiful. Consider your pros and cons budget wise, but I think it's definitely worth the buy.

it needs root.
I will not trip my knox. I do not understand the new sd821, they overclocked the WARM, HOT CPU.... It get hot, after 5 min of gameplay. completly useless the power it gives us, if u cannot use in warm conditions ( hot summers)
p.s.: my sd810 Z5 only last for 1-2 min of gameplay, SO s7 won this match, BUT.......with minutes

Those apps are all bull****, stay away from such stuff. The only way to lower heat is to lower performance, some apps might be able to underclock the CPU or change governor but those that claim to lower heat without root are just shady apps.
on topic: I bought the flat s7, exynos variant too and well, I'm not disappointed at all so far. Screen is amazing as expected, wifi/data speeds are top notch, battery is surprisingly good and most bloatware can easily be disabled now even without root thanks to this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro (careful with what you disable, some apps are obviously necessary for the phone to function and disabling them can result in features not working or even bootlops, make sure you know what it is you're disabling)
as for cons, well the price will always sting so there's that, it also seems like the GPU on the exynos variant is slightly weaker than the one in the snapdragon variant but I'm not a big gamer so I can't comment much on that and it can occasionally stutter a bit if you're performing certain tasks, like having multiple apps updating while gaming or right after you apply a new theme but those are special occasions where the CPU is obviously being stressed. Day to day usage, there's not much if any lag at all.

I never use cooling apps but for people who don't have root there's not much you can do.

Just pour water on the phone to cool lol ?

What about RAM? How much is left for the user? I heard that's only 1GB... Now you will say "That's enough RAM!" It is. But the fact that 4GB RAM device leaves only 1GB free is unbelievable.
My Windows 8 PC x64 uses only 2GB when no apps are running. And my old Vista x32 used 900MB only! Even my S5 mini with Touchwiz when no apps are running uses 800MB or even lower. I even got 563MB RAM using only some time in its life. I don't know what the problem is but I think this is all Samsung's fault. Like why the hell they need to modify Android so much?! Just create a slightly modified Stock ROM with some additional apps like Smart Manager and Galaxy Apps and change to Samsung wallpapers and that's it.

You can't compare ram manager of Windows and Android systems, very different! In Android free ram is a wasted ram! So..... more stuff in ram....more quickly it opens app or background process, if the user needs more ram to open a hungry app the system will close other stuff to satisfy the user needs. Is this really important in the rom....ram manager! Samsung have to do a good job to give us a very tune and balance ram manager for the system running smoothly.

Yes.
You have Smart Manager in TW. It will tell you current usage and provide a facility to reclaim RAM if needed.
I have between about 1.6 and 2.3 gb free, depending on usage.

512 is not medium ram. That is the minimum ram android needs to run. You will not be able to do alot with a such a low end device.

512mb is the absolute bargain basement low-end amount of ram that you're going to get in an Android phone these days. There's really no reason to be using a phone like that anymore, especially if you're into gaming. Even my son's piece-of-crap LG Viper has 1gb of ram. I guarantee you can get a better phone than you're using off eBay for not much money.

Probably because the iPhone runs a totally different OS than an Android phone. Apple optimized the crap out of the OS to prioritize a consistently smooth UI at the expense of a lot of other things.

The Exynos 5420 currently runs as a dual quad-core cpu. Either the four A7 cores are active, or when more performance is needed, the A7s turn off and the four A15 cores get enabled. From what I've read, HMP (having all 8 cores enabled simultaneously) will be enabled with a new kernel.

Do you already have it in hand or is it still being shipped to you? Do you plan to root and debloat it?
Every use case is different but I can't say that I have much to complain about in terms of lag on this device. Maybe chrome but even there with some tweaks things can be improved.
Apparently, it will be shipped tomorrow and will arrive in a couple of more days thereon.. Thanks Any more feedback will be appreciated

You didn't mention your intention to root or not. IMO it will make a difference. Totally understandnot wanting to at first though. Using a third party launcher and adjusting animation scale in developer options helps too.
Between freezing applications in titanium backup and tweaking things using xposed modules or multi window app tweaks I've done so many tweaks to my device I don't know if I could name them all. Throughout it all the tablet performs admirably. I'm no gamer though.

Yeah my advice would be to not worry too much about benchmarks. Up until now I haven't run any on this device but I did install linpak and quadrant this morning to check. Both results are inconsistent with the article that was linked earlier in this thread. Linpak was consistently over 400 and got as high as 477 (each time claiming inconsistent results in its report) and quadrant showed a very low score of 11,000 or so.
Unless you game heavily though I'm sure things will work out fine for you.

The note pros expos 5420 actually outperforms the snapdragon 800 in cpu
Power. The four in the snapdragon is a bit faster though. All in all the processors are practical equals in performance. The note pro wifi exynos 5420 is powerful enough to run any app or game you can download at high settings (minus those games specifically optimized for the snapdragon or tegra) I am pretty picky with devices and the note pro wife stock is one of the smoothest devices I have ever used. It certainly outperforms any tablet and only barely falls behind its little brother the note 3 in speed. The note 3 is smoother but I think this is due to the lower pixel count on the screen lowering the go load. The note pro wifi version will run emulators better than the snapdragon as well. Rooting will also do a lot for your performance by removing bloatware.

There is really never a safe way to overclock any type of CPU or GPU the max safe setting IS what it is already set at 9 out of 10 times according to most CPU manufacturers IE Intel and AMD. Therefore, I would logically assume that since they recommend NOT going over the recommended settings, because you technically CAN fry out the CPU if not careful at any setting past the max safe setting the CPU is at stock no matter how little the tweak its possible. Not saying it will happen, but just saying its always a risk there is nothing safe when overclocking.

Vulkan API?

So yeah Samsung said that it's integrated in the S7 and S7 edge, but what does that mean right NOW? I still haven't noticed any improvements in gaming performance, and games still drain the same amount of battery (as they say it improves performance in gaming and battery life, also it's said that the new TouchWiz uses or will use the Vulkan API, is it already being used or what?). What exactly should we expect and when?
My questions might not be well asked, but you get what I want to know

This post explains it pretty well, basically it's a new way to boost graphics performance and harness the full power of the CPU. It translates into more responsive game play, more fluid animations and a slicker/snappier touchwiz.

It will depend on devs implementing it when building their games, I'm not sure which ones/if any use it at the moment.
I think it's helped a lot with the optimisation of touchwiz which is noticeably improved although this could also be due to the 4GB ram and newer CPU in the S7.
I believe android N is supposed to add native support for the vulkan api so perhaps it will be more apparent when it comes.

I'm actually trying now to play Vainglory which is supposedly using Vulkan API, and I can't deny it, it runs smoother than a lot of games I have including clash royale, hearthstone and subway surfers.. even though it looks demanding.. Also the phone isn't overheating much like it does on clash royale and battery drain is normal.. I don't know if it's actually thanks to Vulkan or if the game runs like this on other phones as well.

Nice one, it certainly sounds like its running well although hard to confirm its purely down to Vulkan, without being able to enable and disable it on the handset itself. I suppose the way to test would be to run it on an S6 or an HTC 10 for comparison.

Sorry mate, I got rid of the S7.

(Exynos)Games have less FPS

So I was playing a game Critical Ops and I invited my friend to play it (he plays on iPhone SE). Most of the time, phone gets 50-60fps with lag spikes every minute or so. But my friend doesn't experience anything like this; he gets 55-60 without any lag spikes. So I've began to wonder if my phone is bad. So we made AnTuTu Benchmark and GeekBench and results were similar (about 130K in AnTuTu and about 5500 multi-core score in GeekBench). After this, I went to supermarket because there was a shop with phones that you can try. So I tried playing with shop's S7 (G930X), and I saw that it was running as same as my friend's iPhone did (55-60 without lag spikes) in the same graphics settings. I installed cpu monitoring app on my phone to see what's happening and I saw that CPU wasn't maxed out. 2 or 3 (I think stronger cores) weren't working. So I thought that they are corrupted or sth. so I did a benchmark with monitoring on and I saw that only then all cores were working(didn't test the S7 that was on shop though). So what it can be? Do I need to root my phone or is the phone itself bad? Please help.

Actually I have exynos S7 G930F variant I use to get lock ups playing Bloons TD 5 but after clearing recents and leaving that game still running it fixed the issue and got full speed no lock ups try clear recents before running games (I'm on superman rom and super kernel with default settings)
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Well I play BTD Battles(a little more intensive game than BTD5) and getting no problem, even in 30th round. I clear the recents and use Smart Manager widget to get some free ram before running a game.
I see you are rooted right? Do I really need to root my phone? It's only about 2 weeks old and I worried a little for the warranty but if there's no solution for without root then I will manage to make it at some point.
P.S. I think you are secured from this happening because you have a root and a custom rom and kernel so you can manage everything
Sent from my SM-G930F using XDA-Developers mobile app
Exynos G930F comes to a crawl at level 100+ on BTD5 with so much on screen
Don't forget that you have 4 times more pixel than the iPhone SE.
yea this might be the case but its got better battery life so you give and you get some
If possible, I will try to make a video on the shop's S7 and my s7's performance.
P.S. I wonder if G930X has Snapdragon because I can't find any info about this model in internet. If yes then everything's solved I guess

Thanks man!
Then everything's solved in this situation, but another question comes up: why CPU in Exynos version isn't maxed in game Critical Ops? Because if SD version has 4 cores and it works better than in my phone it means that something has to do with cores.
Can it be the game's problem and i need to report this problem?
Sent from my SM-G930F using XDA-Developers mobile app
Possible the game need optimising for 8 cores, but I think the SD S7 has slightly better graphics scores than the Exynos too
Ok so I reported the problem to developers now I need yo wait for their response.

New update rolled out yesterday so I updated and C-ops works pretty smoothly(better!) but still lag spikes.
But now I downloaded Minecraft: Pocket Edition and IT'S NOT 60FPS! It's SOMEWHAT smooth BUT sometimes I see 20-30fps in scenes that aren't showing much of a landscape. And I tried playing HearthStone, NFS:No Limits, GTA:SA and Alto's Adventure (because it was lagging for some people but it works good for me) and I don't see 60FPS from them either. What the hell Samsung. FYI, I tried turning off App power saving in Settings>Battery>App power saving.
P.S. I have read some articles and people said S6 (8 core phone) has worse performance BUT in Marshmallow, not Lollipop so let's hope it will change in Nougat.

Exynos variant has a weaker GPU than Qualcomm so most games will have lower FPS. Exynos does have a stronger CPU and better battery life but that doesn't help out so much with gaming.

But what about iPhone SE then? It has garbage GPU (let's be honest) but CPU is very strong but still performs a little better than my phone. Maybe resolution helps.

I am thinking, should I sell my S7 for another phone? What do you guys think? Do you have any recommendations for another phone?

I wouldn't sell my S7 just because a single game won't reach 60 Fps, sure, the Adreno 530 on the SD Variant is a bit stronger but that doesn't mean the Mali T880 is weak by any means. I'm guessing it must be the software optimization probably because the developers were using an Adreno GPU or a Qualcomm developed gpu. Either way, try tinkering with the settings ( disabling Vsync and anti aliasing ) and see if that would work. You could also try overclocking the GPU if you want.
Goodluck

12GB RAM ???

For my usage even 6GB ram in my S9+ is enough, so the 8GB version of OP7 Pro should be more than enough. The question is: is 12GB RAM going to be FASTER than the 8GB in any way when only using ONE app\benchmark\game at a time?? Cus I want the FASTEST.
As far as I know about how PCs work, more Ram only helps if you are using it... but then why did OP ''leak'' the cpu benchmark from the 12GB variant? https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/...isting-confirms-12-gb-ram-and-snapdragon-855/

More RAM = More App memory

You already know the answer.
By the time you need 12 gigs- you will probably become some 3 years older from now -- when a different SoC, GPU and the OS would actually want to make use of it on extremely intensive tasks.

Don't know why "leaked" but all I can think of a phone having 12 gigs of RAM for now & also competitors following suit is all about BRAGGING RIGHTS.

Perhaps - but if you get 2-3 Andiiod upgrades and you pass your phone on to kids, grandma or someone who's less of a power user, having a phone that works can be better than buying them a new one.
Or if things keep going the way they're going, you keep the phone yourself because there's no significant upgrade that merits buying a whole new phone as long as the current one still works fine.

In both cases I doubt how much of a role the 12 gigs would play(highly doubtful) at all in comparison to 8 gigs, as that "additional" 4 gigs will have little to do with the system but a newer redesigned SoC definitely WILL - which will be absent.
I mean just adding some "Access gigs Of RAM " will not make the phone futureproof.
How many nand chips make up the 8Gb and the 12 GB?
If there are more chips in the 12gb version then it will eat more battery.
Just ordered the blue 12 G version ?
Unfortunate that 12GB is only available in blue.
Im about to order the 12GB version just for bragging rights. Does the 12GB actually make a difference to the performance? Unlikely if say. I have a 6T Mclaren and the 10GB makes zero difference over the ordinary 6T but with the Snapdragon maybe the extra ram is utilised who knows. Anyway Im hesitant as I don't want what Happened to the 6 to happen again a special edition Red color soon after. That really makes me angry. I was lucky to get the McLaren when I did. Don't want to spend over €800 and see that happening all over again.
