Coming from a Oneplus One, I was very unhappy with the SD808 performance. Even with no wakelocks, no apps running in the backround, on stock rom and on Truepure MM, on stock kernel and on Frankenkernel, there was always lag.
I did some reading and came across this, which I think may be useful to a lot of people on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guide-advanced-interactive-governor-t3269557
I'm currently running the "Nexus 5x Butterfly" profile from this post with EX Kernel Manager:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64645746&postcount=900
To do this, you'll need:
-Bootloader unlocked + TWRP + Root
-Frankenkernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/kernel-frankenclark-t3289939
-ElementalX Kernel Manager or your favorite kernel manager if you don't mind entering manually. (DO NOT USE KERNEL ADIUTOR, latest version has governor-tuning related bugs that reset values when trying to tweak other values. If anyone knows of a free kernel-tuning app that doesn't have this bug, let me know so I can add to this post.)
Phone is fast, animations are buttery smooth at x0.75, no longer heats up during long gaming sessions, and battery life seems much better than stock. Would love to hear feedback from others who have tried this!
I can't run stock MM on mine due to the lag. But on Lollipop it's pretty smooth. As smooth as any phone I've had (but considering it's also the newest phone, I also expected more leaps and bounds better performance). I suggest trying a custom ROM or switching back to LP and just using GravityBox. AICP appears ready for DD. Some builds are better than others though. So if you get a laggy build, try another.
Just checked out the links. Sounds like KTKernel and how you could install profiles, or make your own. Darnit...now that I just got all set up on stock LP and I'm happy with my phone, now I want to update to MM again to see if these profiles help with the scrolling through mud lag.

I'll try to record a before and after video tonight and add it to the OP. It's a pretty huge difference.
I might just use a flashable zip, if we have one. That way I'll keep my LP bootloader so I can always restore my backup if I don't like it. I loved the layers support for MM.
Afaik all the stock roms lag. I'm having no issues on AICP. Thanks for the settings though, if I ever go stock again I'll make sure to use it.
The files format extention is txt, should I just rename it? When searching through the sd card with ex kernel manager it doesn't find the settings
I believe the instructions say what you need to do with .txt part. In fact I know they do lol.

Curious. Where are you experiencing the lag? I've only found it unbearable in Chrome with sites running heavy Javascript code.
Care to be more descriptive of this "lag" you are talking about. I also had a OnePlus One and I would say performance is about the same.

Try scrolling and watch the screen. Notice it can't keep up with your thumb, it's all stuttering and jittery, trailing behind. And when you open a menu or pop up, the moves in with 3 steps, instead of seemlessly and smoothly moving in.
You can open titanium and try to scroll, or open settings and click "apps", or even scrolling in the settings. Scrolling in TT is unbearable. Chrome is not as bad, but still can't keep up, and stutters while scrolling.

What ROM are you on? Have you used FrankenKernel before (if not, maybe a bad download)? What exactly did you do? The EX Kernel Manager wouldn't stop you from booting, since there's a delay between finishing booting and when settings get applied. Betting this is related to flashing FrankenKernel.
Worse than stock franken kernel settings... Not smooth at all!

Well, that's what I was afraid of. But then I hear other users say they have noticeable lag since MM and I know it's not me. On LP it's pretty smooth. But on MM it's garbage.
I don't think I could send it in for a replacement. I'd be without a phone for too long. Plus it's unlocked.

The EX kernel manager's CPU settings never keep when I load up a profile, very odd.
I might just stick with the kernel auditor or whatever the hell it's called.
I did a quick search in the other thread and I can't find the answer. I can't seem to find the gov_profiles folder to put the profile you recommend into. Any ideas?

hi, i used to have a G2 running CM7, recently got a MT4GS (Doubleshot) and was using CM9 on it, but didn't like the camera app, i loved the stock sense camera app on the MT4GS, just don't want the bloatware. so after some googling, i have found VIRTUOUS INFINITY to fit my needs with a stockish feel, but sleeker/quicker.
only thing i've come across that keep this rom from being a homerun, is the speakerphone volume is really really low... is there a fix for this yet? i am running the latest beta with OTA updater.
also, when using instagram, the "blur" effect, causes artificats in the blurred area.
once again, only real gripe i have is the ridiculously low sound i get from speakerphone when on the phone... like literally, the headset speaker is louder then the speakerphone at full volume.
love the rom otherwise, camera works great, and i don't need 1080p recording, perfectly happy with 720p.
Hi! Are you talking about the incall volume? If yes I have made a patch for this already which fixes a couple of bugs. And one of them is the in call volume.
Here's a mirror made by the great WeekendsR2Short who just got his mirror thread stickied now.

Just flash it above the current virtuous infinity ROM you have and clean the dalvik cache.

hi, i appreciate the quick reply. i am referring to the actual speakerphone volume. i was on CM9 for a few hours, and know the speakerphone was loud enough to hear over the radio while driving. after i i went to V.I., the speaker phone volume sucks, but i am loving the rom... small compromise, but was hoping there was a fix, as in my little google efforts showed others have experienced the same thing.
i havn't tried the patch you linked me, i have used the Sound Enhancer Patch.zip from the same stickied thread though. hoping that would be the solution i was looking for, it seemed to increase the speakerphone volume slightly, but nowhere as loud as it was with CM9 or stock rom.
thinking of trying bulletproof right now, i see lots of praise on that rom too.

just tried the patch you linked me to in your reply. that fixed my problem! thanks a lot! my speakerphone is now as audible as it once was! i didn't try the all in one patch, i just tried the sound enhancer one. my problem is solved now.
i will post back with any updates, hopefully phone stays stable, i noticed after i installed the soundenhancer patch, while making a phone call and putting it on speaker to try it out, i was having the phone turn off on me, or OS crash, not sure. going to revert to backup i made in nandroid, and just apply the patch you linked me too. once again, thanks for the help!
I made both the sound enhancer patch and the all in one patch. The sound enhancer patch is buggy and I made a 2nd version of that. And after sometime I compiled all the fixes I made to VI into that all in one patch.

that explains why the sound enhancer patch didn't work then, i should have just did the AIO from the beginning.

You need to replace the old kernel with the one included in the patch.
Judging by your problem I'm sure your S-On so what you should do is..
extract boot.img from the patch
then fastboot it into your phone.
The new kernel there fixes some other bugs which you might encounter soon so better flash it now rather than later. Else if you insist using the old kernel just replace the bcmdhd.ko in your /system/lib/modules with the one from the original VI flashable zip.

oh ok, makes sense. i had thought it was same kernal. and that i could just flash over rom. ill fast boot the patch kernal in then.
ill do that right now.
and yea, i am s-on, ill look into s-off this weekend. being able to flash from one different roms without having to fastboot through pc first would be a fun way to kill time. lol.

well, maybe s-off isn't quite needed then, since i'm not quite a developer that will always be flashing new roms on. just trying to have fun with the phone when i can.
anyway, just wanted to report back that phone is running flawlessly now with new kernal and patch, camera is slightly cripser, less lag while multitasking, speakerphone nice and loud, and loving the new battery profiles.
i appreciate the quick help in getting my problem resolved. :good::highfive:
Speaking of camera apps, mattlowry found one for us that works GREAT in this ROM. It adds quite a few more settings that really adds some finetuning abilities for your pictures. If you haven't already, you ought to flash this attachment.....IMHO.

was this included in the unoffical_patch.zip?
i had this flashed onto my phone already, but reverted back to original backup, and flashed the unofficial_patch onto my phone, assuming it had the upgraded camera app too.
if i am mistaken, then ill go ahead and flash that camera app back on.
thanks for the info. :highfive:
edit- just re-read the section in your sticky. will flash the camera app back on. realized it wasn't included in the AIO patch.
:good: It adds enough that I certainly was glad Matt found it.
so i've been using the phone for about a week with no issues.
rather then starting a new thread, i thought i'd post some questions up in here. since i can't post in the developer thread for the rom.
just to confirm, panoramic picture doesn't work? and slow motion video doesn't work? just tried messing with those settings today, but app would just close. just wanted to make sure it wasn't working to begin with and not a faulty install on my part.
i was looking to buy a new battery, but noticed the phone has a 1800mhz battery from an evo 3d. my girlfriend said she bought it, because the original battery was really bad. is there a better battery upgrade for me than the 1800mhz? i notice battery life is great when not using the phone, but as soon as i start browsing the net, or listening to music, it sees the battery drains almost a percent every few minutes. is there an app or way to test health of a battery?
also, for the launcher/app drawer, is there a way to make the apps scroll vertically versus horizontally?
and while i'm asking questions, anyone have a recommendation for a mobile video editing app? something easy to trim clips, and add transitions, and maintain HD quality.
other then these few questions. i'm loving the phone and rom. been real stable besides the aforementioned things. it still has artifact glitching when using the blur tool in instagram, but that i can live with.
thanks in advance for any insight/help. :highfive::good:

Panoramic picture is a framework issue so downloading a 3rd party camera which doesn't depend on htc framework should work. And regarding slow motion video it's a kernel issue. Virtuous team never really focused on fixing the kernel to fix up it's compatibility(this includes 1080p recording) so we maybe having a decent sense 4 ROM but we got a crippled kernel.

thanks for the reply! i will download that app for video editing, and find one for panoramic pictures.
i just downloaded cpu tuner, and set my clock sped to roughly 1.5ghz, phone is nice and snappy, real responsive, feels like a brand new phone. is this a safe stable range to clock at (1.5ghz)? or should i run lower, it was only at 1ghz, and i was reading that some roms actually set the kernal clock speed at 1.7ish... ill probably turn it down to 1.3ish, hopefully for better battery life and overall longevity of phone.
and whats a good minimum clock speed? was unsure what it meant, but i think its basically the resting clock speed when phone isn't in use?

My phone will get a bit freaky at 1.7gHz if I run it too long. My basic range is 192mHz to 1.5gHz all day everyday. I have yet to need 1.7gHz when 1.5gHz works for everything I need it to.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
So I keep hearing complaints about "lag" with the Galaxy S4. Some of you have it and some don't.
Well, debloating your ROM (removing junk apps that you don't use) will typically reduce lag since these extra apps aren't fighting for system resources. But that doesn't work for everyone.
Another thing to do is to flash an AOSP (android open source project) ROM. These ROM's (including gapps) are usually less than 300MB in total size, while a stock or even debloated stock TouchWiz ROM are almost always 800MB to 1.3+GB in size.
Another thing you can try is to install "Seeder". Some folks will suggest it doesn't really do anything for you. Some others will say it uses up a lot of battery. So I guess every application is different. Because for me, even with an AOSP ROM, I seem to get slightly faster system response time when I click on something. And I've left my phone alone over eight+hours and checked battery useage and don't see Seeder anywhere taking up any battery.
Here is the Seeder main application thread. There, you can "thank" the developer (lambgx02) and also ask questions about the app. You can also download Seeder from that thread for free.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987032
Or, you can be a nice person and "buy" the app from the Play Store. At less than $2, it's not very expensive.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lcis.seeder&hl=en
You can either read about how/why the app works or doesn't. Or you can try it for yourself.
For me, it's a must-have on the S4 since even AOSP ROM's still have a small amount of lag when compared with the smoothed-out ROM's on the S3.\
REQUIREMENTS:
-Rooted ROM
-Canadian or USA or Euro S4's, it works for all of them.
-TouchWiz or AOSP, it doesn't matter which.
So, here's how to install it:
1) Download Seeder to your internal or external SD card. It doesn't matter where.
2) Using Root Explorer (or your file browser of choice), locate and click on the seeder.apk.
3) Select "Install".
4) Select "Install" again.
5) Click "open".
6) Read the disclaimer and click "OK".
7) Grant root permissions:
8) Make your settings identical to mine (to start with). I've actually since changed mine from "Moderate" to "Aggressive" because I noticed no change in battery life. So, why not.
9) Now reboot.
10) Wait two minutes after the phone comes back up (to allow background start-up processes to finish) and start using phone normally.
Good luck, hope it works for you as well as it works for me. This is not a "cure-all" for lag, but it should help speed up an otherwise healthy system.
Don't expect miracles either. Only a really fubard'd ROM might show HUGE differences. But this app will probably help a little bit.
I had tried this program on my ATT GNOTE after the new JB update that seemed to slow everyone's phones to a crawl. It did help somewhat, but not enough for it to become bearable.. Caved and bought the S4. Seems like the app DOES work.

I endorse the posting of this link. I actually intended to do so in the OP when I was typing up the original post (and lost it all to a BSOD).
The article refers more to the theory behind the "fix".
But end results are end results, and the app works for some people. It also does not work for some other folks.
Like I said in the OP, try it and see how it works for you.

Right, and it shows that the theory behind the "fix" is flawed, having no effect on app execution. The only positive performance you're seeing is a result of boosting CPU speeds. It's not saying you're not seeing results. It's just that you're seeing them for the wrong reason; the same of which can be achieved by changing your CPU governor.

I highly, highly doubt any other positive effects can be discernible on top of overclocking.

The system lags because touchwiz has many many features beyond those that you can just simply remove with titanium backup and such, there are a lot of features;what they seem to call them. That adjust color and lighting beyond ambient at all times no matter what. Samsung needs to release an update which I know they're cooking up, that optimizes these resource hog and debugs that are constantly running in the background... Let's just hope we get it soon and not have to wait till 4.3 to get it. The only way to get rid of all of the lag is to switch to also otherwise there will always be a tad amount of it, until samsung fixes it themselves; there's only so much developers can conjure up
The only way to get rid of the lag is by installing a custom ROM, either AOSP/AOKP or a TW based ROM like Omega or Winam. Then installing a custom, polished kernel like KT's kernel. Then disabling the scroll cache.
That makes this thing run like it should have in the first place.
Yeah seeder sucks sorry to say its not actually doing much.
just got my oneplus over the weekend and i notice most of the custom roms have alot of lag for me. no matter what mods, tweaks or kernels i flash. the scrolling mod fix did help but i just don't feel the device is very smooth coming from my htc m8. any suggestions or thoughts?
More information about your set up. How and where do you experience lag would help.

Yeah this would really help.
My bacon setup. is really fast with zero lag (better than the M8), so I am not sure what setup you have right now that would be causing this...
Scrolling lag. Opening and closing apps. Just overall sluggish. Right now im on mahdi rom with the auxx kernel. Stock speeds. Zen + smartmax. Tried many other roms and configs. Was even worse when i was on the ak kernel. The only roms that dont lag are the alpha 5.0 roms.

Do you do full wipes between ROMs, and did you have this lag on CM11S before you started going custom?

Yes i always wipe. Might hard reset and flash factory. Start over. See if that helps.

Yeah that is really odd, I mean I get nothing but smoothness on this phone with pretty much every ROM I've used, currently on the latest Carbon nightly...
My device also lag so much, to the level when there can be 2 sec delay when I scroll on home screen with nothing open (only Google apps installed). The weird thing is when I first got the device is seems ok, then flashed 5.0 Alpha and then a couple of other ROM like PA 4.4.4 and then back to stock. Now even on stock (100%), I am still getting so much lag it is unreal. Some other issues: sound breaks when watching youtube, and sometimes screen freezes and phone reboots.
Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the OnePlus 2 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It's pretty finicky. Apps like 9gag are very smooth but Instagram is laggy. It had always been the other way around on other phones for me.

Its generally very smooth throughout different apps. Any lags is due to the loading of new content, which is probably why you see stutters in apps like Facebook, Instagram, and what not.
Also how is your phone set up? Running AK Kernel greatly improves overall UI fluidity as well.

Everything stock. I wanted to try AK but I'm a bit sceptical about fast charge it has, won't it wear down the phone faster? Have you tried Boeffa or sandy kernel? Do they have good scrolling too?

I tried AK and boeffla only, so I dunno about Sandy. But it honestly the scrolling cant be any worse than the stock kernel. The fast charging can be disabled (In fact I think its disabled by default) and since OxygenOS 2.1.1 users have reported that the default charging speed is already faster than before.
AK Kernel also unlocks all the cores of the Snapdragon 810 so you should also see better performance in games. Best of all you'll probably get better battery life out of your phone as well.
I have to agree that the new update (2.1.2) + AK kernel make the phone feel perfect for me. I am really enjoying it now and I have absolutely no more issues (home button, lag, etc.).

To be honest, I am happy with the way it is now.
But, yeah... M on the phone does sound awesome. However though, I am expecting some new bugs with the OS ... so for now I am enjoying a BUG free phone

v0.23 with stylo kings profile. Better performance and battery, but it's a bit too early to say.

Really fast scroll and smooth.
I can't really put my finger in the cause, it seems to follow all N roms (though most are based on LOS, so..)
Sometimes the device crawls to a standstill, until i'm able to close all open apps, and then it gets snappy again.
I would consider this device at least as fast as my M7, but although the One is slower in general than the N5, it never gets slower...
I don't have weird apps installed, the most crazy ones are the Facebook messenger and chrome, the rest is google apps and whatsapp...
mine is showing same behaviour since a few days ago, ive enabled sync and enabled cm email, others things ive done is installing tumblr, i think some apps that works on 2nd plane arent managed well with ram autokill and somewhat with persistent services.
ill clean flash and disable sync forever [emoji14]
other thing ive noticed is other storage is permanent oversized and the phone cant really know whar is this
Pure CAF @ crLOS14.1
Is it insanely hot when it slows down? If that's the case it's overheating for some reason.
I used to have that problem last year. I kind of fixed it after I formated the memory while I was trying to have F2FS. I knew i'd lost everything in the memory so I did a backup and trough TWRP changed the partition to F2FS and it helped a lot. A friend's tab had the same problem and he fixed it that way

Or maybe it went out of memory? Although I doubt it. One thing that comes to mind is mpdecision, sometimes it shuts down all cores except 0 and won't switch them back online, forcing you to do it manually or somehow wake it up. Have you tried keeping tabs on your cores with a monitor app? Anything mpdecision-rated in logcat when the crawls happen?
I was on Catacalysm until nougat, which can be considered stock. didn't have speed issues then.
when I flashed nougat all 3 roms i flashed had annoying lag which was not acceptable.
eventually me and other users discovered it was happening because of the memory filling up.
apparently the phone needs quite a bit of free memory to work well. tweaking memory management through kernel editor solved it for me.
I can't tell for sure if that's your issue but u can give it a try.
What I do is that I clean flash about every six months, generally upgrading to a higher version of android (stopped after 6.0.1 tho cuz of xposed), after backing my media. Once I restore that after the flash, I always have more space available than pre flash and it feels a lot faster. Might be a placebo, might not. But is it stupid if it works?

Problem is, i'm starting to believe it's tied to N7.x

Your findings are consistent with mine, it seems the device is running out of memory and is trying to swap out heavy apps to make do, namely chrome and facebook. While it's doing that, it's slow as hell. I've also had launcher re-start, like if the OOM had it killed.
Which settings did you tweak ? LowMemoryKiller ?
Yep, LMK set to exterminate.
I wonder what the original configuration was, not only for LMK but also CPU gov etc, Because honestly I think that even after tweaks it was still better on stock.
In general nougat doesn't really add much for me, M was great, I was in a hurry to upgrade because I had play services battery drain bug on M. That was terrible.
Also I noticed mine is thermal throttling really quickly, I don't know if its normal or not. I've been thinking about improving cooling with a mod but at this point my N5 is on its way out. In november I'll close 4 years with it and I'll get a new device (maybe 1+5?)
Memory issue

It's all because of memory,
3/4 cores are going offline and online regularly, but sometimes cores won't go online which create frizzing untill cores get online,
For solution you should be first root then install kernel editor you like and edit core to performance or high performance,
That solved my problems.

What gapps are you using? Using pico or Beans mini will let you put most of your Google apps on the user partition and not the system partition. You could also try an AOSP based ROM instead of a LOS based ROM like Krexus, Pure Nexus or Tesla

I tried PureNexus, but it hasn't been update recently. I also suspect of a bug in LOS, since it seems to follow all roms, no matter the builder or kernel.

Using small gapps packages frees up space in /system, I never use full gapps packages on my Nexus 5 and I've never experienced this slow down you're having.
Pure Nexus just updated on May 13th, Tesla updated today. If you choose to flash one of them, be sure to wipe system in advanced wipe as well as data and caches before flashing

I don't think the suggestions in the last few comments will help. I'm pretty sure it's mainly a memory management settings issue.
if you want here's my profile in synapse (kernel settings editor you can find on google play). I'm currently testing it for a few days and it seems good so far but I still need to test it under really heavy load.
I'm running nitrogenOS with the kernel that comes with it. if you run something else you may have to tweak it a little.
