Hello guys!
AFAIK Sensation has 1 gb of internal storage memory and 768 mbytes of RAM. I hear people say that of that RAM, only ~170 mbytes are available to the user.
Do you experience problems with memory like when applications start to stutter when you start a few of them simultaneously and do you have to delete other apps to make room for new ones (because of ridiculously small internal storage)?
There are no ram issues with the sensation. I'm coming from a g2x which only had 512 and I always had free ram even when I had open everything I normally had open. I constantly had about 95 MB free. With the sensation I constantly have around 150 free with everything open. Someone once said here on the forums. If you constantly have a lot of free then its pretty much wasted ram. And there is 558 or something like that available. The rest is reserved for the gpu. That's the case on many phones and tablets now. They reserve some of the ram for the graphics processor.

The only ram issues I ran into is after closing Firefox sense would reboot. I'm almost positive its a Firefox issue though. Because that is the only time I had that issue.

Thanks! But what about the internal storage? Is 1gb enough or will I have to make compromises and delete rarely used apps to make room for new ones?
I haven't had any issues with internal storage yet either. You can alway just move apps to the sd card if you feel like you are losing space.

I don't use as many apps as others but I have about 30-40 apps installed and still have 910Mb of free space. Unless you install over 300 apps I think you'll be fine.
As far as the ram goes if I use a launcher other than sense I can get over 200mb free, compared to just over 100 with sense. I like sense alright, but the ram usage does make me a bit worried. Also I had the sense reboot quite a bit when moving between aps and even when waking up the phone, which I think may be a ram issue (though I certainly don't know it could be something else but I don't have to put up with a 5+ second load with other launchers) .

Thanks.
I really can't imagine that it wouldn't be running in the background in some compacity as the lockscreen and contacts etc are all from htc. Only kinda negative thing is you loose the htc widgets. Also I somehow lost the ability to longtap on the homescreen to edit widgets, but I'm sure that is from me doing something wrong; I just haven't google foo'd the right answer yet.

Even if you use a launcher sense will still be running in the background. At least that's how it use to be. I think you might be able to kill it at start up with a app like android assistant or something.
I'm waiting for unlocked bootloader so I can hopefully get rid of sense and tmo bloatware. Hopefully the wait won't be too long.

+1 Although I dont have the bloat since I have an unbranded sensation
I am considering using launcher pro with my sensation but I was wondering if it is still going to keep sense in memory therefore using up ressources. Any input on this?

Basically yes, as the Sense launcher is hooked in with the Sense framework, which the phone of course requires.
Overall, don't worry about it, it shouldn't affect your usage at all, it won't be taking up CPU cycles, which is what you should be worried about
Just go and use launcher pro and forget about the Sense launcher in the background. Yes it takes up memory but not using CPU resources so it doesn't matter. This is not old Windows mobile phone, Android will kill the Sense launcher if it runs out of memory (that's why you noticed that Sense had to restart after running some apps on older phone with Sense UI and less memory).
People should stop worrying about having only "100MB" free memory. Free memory means memory that are not used. Merely having 1GB free memory won't make your phone runs any faster than having only 100MB memory. When Android needs more memory, it will automatically kill some background apps to free up memory it needs.
Launcher pro is pretty good

ive used launcher pro since i got android that was with my MyTouch 3G i would never use anything else!
I currently have a Desire, considering getting a Sensation. The biggest problem with the Desire is the limited internal memory - only 512MB, which is also used by the OS itself. So there's very little memory for applications. There exist some solutions to move apps to SD, but they are not nice to set up and don't always perform best.
So my question is, is the 1GB memory on the Sensation enough for installing as many apps as you want? Has anyone hit the limit?
Thanks!
P.S. I'd also like to hear opinions from former Desire users that have already upgraded to Sensation. For example, the capacitive keys and the lack of a trackpad with an action button.
P.P.S. I just realized the topic should go to the Q&A section, but cannot delete this thread anymore...
I would say so! I have everything installed on my sensation that I had on my desire with A2SD and still have 529MB free space

the sensation actually has 2GGB of internal memory where 1GB is reserved for the system meaning you have appproximately 1GB for apps in practic. I find this more than sufficient
It ends up being 10x what the Desire had. Coming from the Nexus One, its definitely nice to not have to worry about space. If you put every app on the SD Card, you can fit about 1,000 apps. About 200 apps if you don't put any on the SD Card.
The trackball is missed a bit, but with it gone you realize how much space it was taking up. The touchscreen is better, and HTC has a little software snippit that's slows down the response rate so you can select text better.

Woah, that's a lot! Does it hint some possible bigger future updates (e.g. Ice Cream Sandwitch with Chocolate Topping and Caramel Almonds )
this question is mostly user preference, since it depends on how the user uses his cellphone. If a user is mostly a application geek or more like games then its not enough. And even if its not enough there is an APP2SD.

Look at the memory with an app like Titanium Backup. It's 1gig internal, 1gig external.

Yeah, a phone with more than 1gb worth of apps is like a closet with a bunch of **** in it you don't need. You can only use so many apps.
1GB with 3 in reserved? How do we get around this so we can use all 4GBs?

I'm sure the specs got bumped down to 2gigs (total). But with a ROM like CM7 or an AOSP build, which is much smaller than Sense, we should be able to reformat the internal memory and get 1.5gigs external, .5gigs internal.

1GB is more than enough for me. I have 920mb left. I have lots of apps on the SD.
I used to have the desire. Correct me if i'm wrong but I remember only having 250mg for apps not 500! Since moving to my Desire hd and now the sensation I have no worries about running out of memory.

250? My wildfire only had 100 MB. Yes it seems ok for me and u can always use apps to sd

My desire had only 100mb for apps. Sense gobbled up the vast chunk of the 512mb rom. Then there were the data and cache partitions as well.
By the way you cannot repartition the Sensation as the flash nand is emmc protected. I don't really understand the technical details but it boils down to the fact that the emmc security prevents it.

Desire user here too, the storage alone was worth upgrading to the sensation, I haven't had the chance to use A2SD on the desire (I had the desire for 2 months), so talking stock, the difference is HUGE, I mean with desire I after installing just barely the basic stuff I use plus some games, I had 26mb or so free, with the sensation right now I have programs that I have no idea what they're for, many games, all while keeping firefox, opera, and several other programs on the internal storage for fast access, free MB : 767mb, so yeah HUGE difference
Thank you, guys! I'm almost convinced to upgrade now The last two questions whose answers will help me convince my wallet:
1) How was the feeling upgrading from Desire? Screen, performance, features?
2) Is it the right time now to upgrade? Is a much better device than the Sensation around the corner?
IMO, the Sensation is the best Android device that has ever come out. Samsung Galaxy S2 feels really bulky and plasticy (like all Samsung devices, including the Nexus S), and I hate their UI mods.
1. Deff. Yes
2. No every 3/6 month a better phone will come out..so buy your phone in the year 2020
Went from Desire to Desire HD to this. Desire HD has sane screen size as this but same resolution as Desire and I must say the screen on the DHD looks silly now. It just looks like it should fit more on the screen than it does.
Now on the Sensation I can use adw launcher with a 5x5 grid and it looks natural. On the last two phones it looked cramped and unpleasant.
The only issue is the handful of apps which can't deal with the higher resolution. I've got two right now which refuse to use any more than 3/4 of the screen. Hopefully the develops will get around to fixing them.

Thanks, dr.m0x, that's a good point. I've also been wondering how apps deal with the qHD screen, as I had the fear that many of them would assume a 800x480 display.
Still, most (at least of the essential/popular) apps deal with the resolution, don't they? And how about games? Resolution seems more critical there, I guess...
I'm sorry, but just cuz my phone has 2 gigs of ram, doesn't mean you get free reign. On my maxx hd, fb never had over 40 mb usage. Sure my phone is fast but it makes me hesitant to install more apps in fear of developing lag.
Sincerely,
A concerned android user.

Memory is there to be used. What's the point of 2 GB of RAM if it's not used? I've had this phone for 40 plus days, I've never had lag. And I have the Facebopk app installed.
It only used 40MB on your old phone because it literally had no more to take. At least that's how it has been on all my phones until my DMAXX. I have almost 1GB free always on this phone, where my GNex would often drop below 100MB. I wouldn't worry (unless you want to complain to Facebook, the app *is* humongous).

On the screenshot he posted, that 109 MB is showing RAM used, not storage used. Notice at the bottom of the display - this is a report of RAM, not storage. Storage space is shown on the "Downloaded" or "All" pages.
Facebook for me the moment is using 58 mb RAM and using 37.58 mb storage.
Thank you for clarification..

It's an easy mistake to make. That display could be more clear.
You should have left up your explanation - it was a useful post. Way too many people misunderstand the difference, and I thought that you explained it well.

Facebook is a resource hog. My suggestion is to use a third-party app to access Facebook (if you can't switch to a better social network like Google+ instead ). Seesmic and Hootsuite are two examples of free apps that can manage a Facebook account using far less RAM and storage. Then you can delete the dreaded Facebook app and never lose another Mb to it.
Actually, I had plenty of available memory on my razr maxx hd at the time. It could have used a lot more.
Anyway, that is a good suggestion to use a different application. I remember in my droid 2 days, I had a fantastic setup using Launcher Pro plus which had a sense theme to it. It had a home widget that I could refresh as I wanted, to fill with updates from facebook and twitter.
Then for a while I was using tweetdeck. It was nice because foursquare was part of it. I guess I haven't fooled around with any third party applications for a while. I will have to try that.
Is it just me or am I losing it. I swear last week my phones app drawer had another row???
