Desire user: Is Sensation's internal storage enough? - HTC Sensation

I currently have a Desire, considering getting a Sensation. The biggest problem with the Desire is the limited internal memory - only 512MB, which is also used by the OS itself. So there's very little memory for applications. There exist some solutions to move apps to SD, but they are not nice to set up and don't always perform best.
So my question is, is the 1GB memory on the Sensation enough for installing as many apps as you want? Has anyone hit the limit?
Thanks!
P.S. I'd also like to hear opinions from former Desire users that have already upgraded to Sensation. For example, the capacitive keys and the lack of a trackpad with an action button.
P.P.S. I just realized the topic should go to the Q&A section, but cannot delete this thread anymore...

I would say so! I have everything installed on my sensation that I had on my desire with A2SD and still have 529MB free space

the sensation actually has 2GGB of internal memory where 1GB is reserved for the system meaning you have appproximately 1GB for apps in practic. I find this more than sufficient

It ends up being 10x what the Desire had. Coming from the Nexus One, its definitely nice to not have to worry about space. If you put every app on the SD Card, you can fit about 1,000 apps. About 200 apps if you don't put any on the SD Card.
The trackball is missed a bit, but with it gone you realize how much space it was taking up. The touchscreen is better, and HTC has a little software snippit that's slows down the response rate so you can select text better.

Woah, that's a lot! Does it hint some possible bigger future updates (e.g. Ice Cream Sandwitch with Chocolate Topping and Caramel Almonds )

this question is mostly user preference, since it depends on how the user uses his cellphone. If a user is mostly a application geek or more like games then its not enough. And even if its not enough there is an APP2SD.

Look at the memory with an app like Titanium Backup. It's 1gig internal, 1gig external.

Yeah, a phone with more than 1gb worth of apps is like a closet with a bunch of **** in it you don't need. You can only use so many apps.

1GB with 3 in reserved? How do we get around this so we can use all 4GBs?

I'm sure the specs got bumped down to 2gigs (total). But with a ROM like CM7 or an AOSP build, which is much smaller than Sense, we should be able to reformat the internal memory and get 1.5gigs external, .5gigs internal.

1GB is more than enough for me. I have 920mb left. I have lots of apps on the SD.

I used to have the desire. Correct me if i'm wrong but I remember only having 250mg for apps not 500! Since moving to my Desire hd and now the sensation I have no worries about running out of memory.

250? My wildfire only had 100 MB. Yes it seems ok for me and u can always use apps to sd
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App

My desire had only 100mb for apps. Sense gobbled up the vast chunk of the 512mb rom. Then there were the data and cache partitions as well.
By the way you cannot repartition the Sensation as the flash nand is emmc protected. I don't really understand the technical details but it boils down to the fact that the emmc security prevents it.

Desire user here too, the storage alone was worth upgrading to the sensation, I haven't had the chance to use A2SD on the desire (I had the desire for 2 months), so talking stock, the difference is HUGE, I mean with desire I after installing just barely the basic stuff I use plus some games, I had 26mb or so free, with the sensation right now I have programs that I have no idea what they're for, many games, all while keeping firefox, opera, and several other programs on the internal storage for fast access, free MB : 767mb, so yeah HUGE difference

Thank you, guys! I'm almost convinced to upgrade now The last two questions whose answers will help me convince my wallet:
1) How was the feeling upgrading from Desire? Screen, performance, features?
2) Is it the right time now to upgrade? Is a much better device than the Sensation around the corner?
IMO, the Sensation is the best Android device that has ever come out. Samsung Galaxy S2 feels really bulky and plasticy (like all Samsung devices, including the Nexus S), and I hate their UI mods.

1. Deff. Yes
2. No every 3/6 month a better phone will come out..so buy your phone in the year 2020

Went from Desire to Desire HD to this. Desire HD has sane screen size as this but same resolution as Desire and I must say the screen on the DHD looks silly now. It just looks like it should fit more on the screen than it does.
Now on the Sensation I can use adw launcher with a 5x5 grid and it looks natural. On the last two phones it looked cramped and unpleasant.
The only issue is the handful of apps which can't deal with the higher resolution. I've got two right now which refuse to use any more than 3/4 of the screen. Hopefully the develops will get around to fixing them.
Sent from my Leedroid Sensational Htc Sensation!

Thanks, dr.m0x, that's a good point. I've also been wondering how apps deal with the qHD screen, as I had the fear that many of them would assume a 800x480 display.
Still, most (at least of the essential/popular) apps deal with the resolution, don't they? And how about games? Resolution seems more critical there, I guess...

I think someone in another thread said a hard reset fixed it for him. I think, when I get my phone, the first thing I will do is give it a hard reset. Then, if I have problems, I'll know a hard reset won't fix it since I already did one.
Nah, I haven't had any and my Sensation is going on 3 days straight without a reboot or using a task killer app. It's still running smooth with over 250 mb of free memory.

I was having Sense FC issues like every 5 minutes, it all started when I changed "Scenes". I did a factory reset and a battery pull and I haven't had a FC in 24 hours. I also haven't changed "Scenes" yet either. I think I like the previous version of Sense more than 3.0, but I am not complaining not even a little bit. I love this friggin phone!
been having this issue also, i disabled the sync and it hasnt happened since.
I've been having a ton of Sense FCs, might have to do the hardreset.... no biggie I guess as long as it fixes it.
*Sensation is one I find it most beneficial devices about a month after release. If you have other devices that use lines of previous HTC devices or reading about it on the xda, but that device error more than Sensation.
*Sensation errors on mainly by the software (ROM). Sensation's hardware have to say is excellent. I think the errors of Sensation after being unlocked bootloader will be fixed (Rom, Kernel, Driver ....)
nice. thanks for the input everyone.
so where are we on this?
What are the conclusions?:
1:Hard reset ... I'd like it to be my last resort. But did it work for you guys?
2:someone on another thread recommended changing from Sense to adw
3: anything else?
I iniataly thought sense was dropped from memory, but I saw in parameters somewhere that it runs in protected area so ca be the culprit at least alone.
There's got to be a better answer!
I'm quiet positive that it has to do with badly written widget or app.
Now how could we approach this?:
could we list all our linked apps??
Any better idea??
This has to be fixed!
I have the same problem with mine.
Sense looks the part but the white screen with logo + loading annoyes me too...
Did you get the problem solved one way or another?
It is, in my opinion, the only downside on my Sensation XE

Sensation not as quick as EVO 3D on Homescreens

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMioPBv4PbI&feature=player_embedded
Interesting. It's nothing too noticeable, but I really hope it gets addressed in an OTA update. This and the unresponsive screen/quick swiping issue need to get addressed fast.
only thing that comes to mind is the RAM difference compared to the EVO

Well I have had zero issues thus far. Am I lucky or you unlucky?
Dunno about I but my Sensation has less lag than that, though it does take about 3 swipes to get my homescreens spinning. Also, I saw noticeable lag there on the EVO 3D especially towards the end of the Video.
The culprit is sense but the EVO 3D looks slightly more smoothe than on my phone.

I've played with both devices in hand (I work for Sprint and we've got our demo unit in) and so far I haven't noticed a big difference.
There is a hell of a lot more bloatware on the Sensation then on the Evo 3D, so I'm hoping once we get root we can remove all the crap.
I only have about 110MB of RAM free on a fresh boot with nothing installed yet (so there is defiantly a lot of garbage installed).
Are you checking your free RAM from that stock "task" manager? If so it's very unreliable. You should manually from the Manage Apps screen.

The spinning effect is just a pointless gimmick anyway. And honestly it looks like it spins way to easily on the Evo.

If they give u a final device this mean they are going to close the company and set drinking tea and coffee at their house This A,B business they will never make final device. this is just how it is.
I think this is totally a software issue. The only way it would be RAM is if the RAM was already maxed out and we know this happens even with 200 free.

Yeah I don't think its the ram either, people have said sense3.0 runs smoother on the MT4G which has the same ammount of ram. Even the PS3 only has 256mb RAM and its a beast for graphics. (yes even the seperate GPU is only 256mb)

that's odd. mine always show 2 different.

setting>app I get around 300mb free.
anyway, I dont' think it's a ram issue. perhaps it's because of bloatware on the phone?
I also think that Evo goes into the carousel mode too easily. it would drive me nuts if every time I wanted to change pages and I flick a little too hard and it goes into a carousel...
It also seems to me that the Evo screen is more vibrant.

I don't see ' unresponsive' or lagged in the video. It's just very slightly different.

[Q] Is RAM and internal memory amount enough?

Hello guys!
AFAIK Sensation has 1 gb of internal storage memory and 768 mbytes of RAM. I hear people say that of that RAM, only ~170 mbytes are available to the user.
Do you experience problems with memory like when applications start to stutter when you start a few of them simultaneously and do you have to delete other apps to make room for new ones (because of ridiculously small internal storage)?
There are no ram issues with the sensation. I'm coming from a g2x which only had 512 and I always had free ram even when I had open everything I normally had open. I constantly had about 95 MB free. With the sensation I constantly have around 150 free with everything open. Someone once said here on the forums. If you constantly have a lot of free then its pretty much wasted ram. And there is 558 or something like that available. The rest is reserved for the gpu. That's the case on many phones and tablets now. They reserve some of the ram for the graphics processor.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
The only ram issues I ran into is after closing Firefox sense would reboot. I'm almost positive its a Firefox issue though. Because that is the only time I had that issue.

Thanks! But what about the internal storage? Is 1gb enough or will I have to make compromises and delete rarely used apps to make room for new ones?

I don't use as many apps as others but I have about 30-40 apps installed and still have 910Mb of free space. Unless you install over 300 apps I think you'll be fine.
As far as the ram goes if I use a launcher other than sense I can get over 200mb free, compared to just over 100 with sense. I like sense alright, but the ram usage does make me a bit worried. Also I had the sense reboot quite a bit when moving between aps and even when waking up the phone, which I think may be a ram issue (though I certainly don't know it could be something else but I don't have to put up with a 5+ second load with other launchers) .

I really can't imagine that it wouldn't be running in the background in some compacity as the lockscreen and contacts etc are all from htc. Only kinda negative thing is you loose the htc widgets. Youtube always dumps the stream cache when you leave the app, is this supposed to be new?
The GS2 has something like 200 more megs of RAM to use compared to the One S, which might as well be the difference between multitasking that works and one that doesn't at all.
So far the only phone that doesn't have multitasking issues that launched with ICS is the US variant Galaxy S3.

I just tried it on a Desire HD. I went from a youtube video, to messaging. When I got back to youtube, it dumped the cache and had to buffer the video for a while before it started again. Is that what you're experiencing?
On my One S, when I leave the YouTube app the video pauses. When I go back into the YouTube app, it starts replaying from where it left off. It does take a second or two for it to prepare the video for playback, but overall it is pretty seamless. Compare that to my laptop where the YouTube video replays instantly (at least the sound does) but the video is all choppy for several seconds until it catches up.
One of the main new developments of android ICS was the improved multitasking functionality, and manufacturers have poorly understood the concept. To have more fluid multitasking your priority lies on increasing RAM over having a fancier quad-core processor! Something well shown by the HTC one S with is S4 dual-core that is able run apps very smoothly, rivalling the One X, but cant run many of them.
hm so i should have gotten the s3 then lol.
but after feeling how this phone is and just the quality and how nice htc sense is idk if i can go back.
they just need to give the next phone 2gbs of ram!
If you install a stock ics or jb rom you won't have this issue. I didn't mind Sense on this phone but the multitasking is brutal. I can't take it... The recent apps implementation is brutal and more time consuming than just going back to the home screen and app drawer. Never mind that it won't cache apps properly..
All the talk of stream lining Sense 4.0 is a joke. A sense rom is almost half a gig, I stock rom is a third of that, come on!

Multitasking Fix?

I believe that one of the devs on here said they found HTC's framework to be killing tasks way before they should be, any chance that this will be documented for use with all 2012 HTC phones? Many phones like the Evo LTE, One X, One S, etc, are running into this issue, and it seems to be a very common problem.
My boyfriends' HTC Raider just received a 4.0.3 update from gingerbread going from sense 3.5 to 3.6, and suddenly multitasking on his is just like my One X... I really loathe this new direction HTC's taking.

I read about how there's some HTC code that basically forces tasks to hibernate/kill after a certain amount of time, and I thought that might be a big reason why multitasking is broken.
Why are there still threads about multitasking? The 4.0.4 largely fixes multitasking problem.

No it doesn't. Not even close.

Since updating this morning, I've found multitasking to be hugely improved. I can go 3 or 4 apps back, that haven't been run in awhile, and they're still sitting in the same spot. In the past they would definitely have had to restart. Really liking the update.

Because there is no confirmation that they removed the task killing code and reverted back to stock memory management.

Just install a rom

Ditto. Post AT&T update I've yet to have the multitasking issues. I'm not sure if HTC did something to improve multitasking or if things just aren't flagged to be killed as fast because there is more RAM available upon boot up.
The issue has become a non issue post update for me though.
The update certainly fixed mine, and I HATED it before. Browser no longer reloads when I switch back, nor does Tapatalk, both of which were notorious culprits. Sense doesn't crash when coming out of gameplay now, either.
I went from less than 200mb of free RAM on a reboot to between 350-400mb of free RAM.
To me, multitasking is night and day different on 4.0.4.

Every other post is saying how much multitasking improved, so go install CleanRom or other 4.0.4 based rom and judge for yourself. I ran 4 apps last night for an hour between Chrome, Facebook, Phone, Message, etc and multitasked them no problem with a ton of screen on/off. None of them had to reload once. It's not perfect, but to say not even close is a retarded statement.
The main problem with multitasking is that by default, it's limited to 15 apps max, so unless it's running as a service, there can only be 15 apps running at once. And since HTC likes to include all these extra apps, like HTC message uploader, music enhancer, HTC services(runs as an app actually), etc, 15 apps is not a lot, so when a new app is launched, it starts to kill apps no matter how much memory is left.
I've already discovered how to raise the limit, I'm just testing a couple of things before I release it
It does seem to be better on 4.0.4. The one thing that annoys me is that while I don't need to reload pages and all, I do have to get into the recent apps even for apps I don't close out the app. But it's much better than before.

Cool, that was what I was wondering about.
Looks like there are still things yet to be discovered about the multitasking shenanigans inside our ROMs...
While more ram has indeed solved hangs and reboot issues, I find chrome still reloads, facebook still reloads, among others... For me, multitasking is no different than before and I've so far tried most of the 4.0.4 roms.
So yeah, I'd say multitasking has a ways to go yet, but that's just me... The above user's response is NOT retarded; that's just disrespectful... More like it's just his experience, and as far as user experiences goes, I'm finding the One XL to be really inconsistent.
Still, definitely an improvement. Baby steps.
