Multitasking Bug - HTC One S

So apparently HTC broke Multitasking on Sense 4.
Lets say your watching a youtube video. Press pause, hit home and then go into your messaging app. Now hit the multitasking button and then try to go back to your youtube video.
But heres the problem.
IT REFRESHES!
WHY!?!?!
thats not how multitasking is supposed to work...
how can we get this fixed?
my tmo sgs2 never did this to me.

For youtube it always does this.
The issue in terms of multitasking is really just a lack of RAM. I know that the One XL got an update where they managed to get another 100 mb of RAM out of it to improve multitasking, but who knows...

i hate that youtube refreshes. that should be one of the main things that it DOESNT do.
why would u pause a video and do something else, then go back to the video just to have it refresh and loose my place.
idiots at htc im telling you.
and it doesnt make sense that its a lack of ram. my sgs2 had the same amount of ram and didnt do this crap.

Youtube always dumps the stream cache when you leave the app, is this supposed to be new?
The GS2 has something like 200 more megs of RAM to use compared to the One S, which might as well be the difference between multitasking that works and one that doesn't at all.
So far the only phone that doesn't have multitasking issues that launched with ICS is the US variant Galaxy S3.

That's all fine and good, but they should not be allowed to advertise 1gB of RAM if you can only keep one program in memory at a time.

I just tried it on a Desire HD. I went from a youtube video, to messaging. When I got back to youtube, it dumped the cache and had to buffer the video for a while before it started again. Is that what you're experiencing?

On my One S, when I leave the YouTube app the video pauses. When I go back into the YouTube app, it starts replaying from where it left off. It does take a second or two for it to prepare the video for playback, but overall it is pretty seamless. Compare that to my laptop where the YouTube video replays instantly (at least the sound does) but the video is all choppy for several seconds until it catches up.

One of the main new developments of android ICS was the improved multitasking functionality, and manufacturers have poorly understood the concept. To have more fluid multitasking your priority lies on increasing RAM over having a fancier quad-core processor! Something well shown by the HTC one S with is S4 dual-core that is able run apps very smoothly, rivalling the One X, but cant run many of them.

hm so i should have gotten the s3 then lol.
but after feeling how this phone is and just the quality and how nice htc sense is idk if i can go back.
they just need to give the next phone 2gbs of ram!

If you install a stock ics or jb rom you won't have this issue. I didn't mind Sense on this phone but the multitasking is brutal. I can't take it... The recent apps implementation is brutal and more time consuming than just going back to the home screen and app drawer. Never mind that it won't cache apps properly..
All the talk of stream lining Sense 4.0 is a joke. A sense rom is almost half a gig, I stock rom is a third of that, come on!

Sensation not as quick as EVO 3D on Homescreens

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMioPBv4PbI&feature=player_embedded
Interesting. It's nothing too noticeable, but I really hope it gets addressed in an OTA update. This and the unresponsive screen/quick swiping issue need to get addressed fast.
only thing that comes to mind is the RAM difference compared to the EVO
1024 > 768
I think the sensation is far from a final device..IMO it is a beta device and I hate htc for that

Well I have had zero issues thus far. Am I lucky or you unlucky?
Dunno about I but my Sensation has less lag than that, though it does take about 3 swipes to get my homescreens spinning. Also, I saw noticeable lag there on the EVO 3D especially towards the end of the Video.
The culprit is sense but the EVO 3D looks slightly more smoothe than on my phone.

I've played with both devices in hand (I work for Sprint and we've got our demo unit in) and so far I haven't noticed a big difference.
There is a hell of a lot more bloatware on the Sensation then on the Evo 3D, so I'm hoping once we get root we can remove all the crap.
I only have about 110MB of RAM free on a fresh boot with nothing installed yet (so there is defiantly a lot of garbage installed).
Are you checking your free RAM from that stock "task" manager? If so it's very unreliable. You should manually from the Manage Apps screen.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
The spinning effect is just a pointless gimmick anyway. And honestly it looks like it spins way to easily on the Evo.

If they give u a final device this mean they are going to close the company and set drinking tea and coffee at their house This A,B business they will never make final device. this is just how it is.
I think this is totally a software issue. The only way it would be RAM is if the RAM was already maxed out and we know this happens even with 200 free.

Yeah I don't think its the ram either, people have said sense3.0 runs smoother on the MT4G which has the same ammount of ram. Even the PS3 only has 256mb RAM and its a beast for graphics. (yes even the seperate GPU is only 256mb)

that's odd. mine always show 2 different.
task manager always show way less.
setting>app I get around 300mb free.
anyway, I dont' think it's a ram issue. perhaps it's because of bloatware on the phone?
I also think that Evo goes into the carousel mode too easily. it would drive me nuts if every time I wanted to change pages and I flick a little too hard and it goes into a carousel...
It also seems to me that the Evo screen is more vibrant.

i think it's just brightness setting, and evo have the widget clock sun shine effect on...
I'm sorry
I don't see ' unresponsive' or lagged in the video. It's just very slightly different.
Mine can take one swipe to spin it .. if I swipe quickly enough .. in fairness I can't imagine needing it to spin anyway.
Right I'm off to try and find something wrong with it..

Its sense, I wouldn't be surprised if the difference of ram really mattered. I use launcher pro and my nexus one had absolutely 0 lag. The sensation has no lag on a fresh boot but 10 sexongs later has lag on the expose style feature. I can't wait to root this thing. All I want is vanilla android with the HTC unlock screen

Do you have a sensation ,or are u just a troll, sensation is not even close to laggy, I had some issues called in for replacement and the phone I had seemed like it fixed itself , the replacement is smooth as babys bottom and I'm sorry but sense Is ten times better than any other launcher ....and I had them all
install new OTA update and TADA sense is very fast!
OP happened to find game which clearly isnt made properly for adreno or new cpu's.
try dungeon defenders for example.. it runs VERY smooth even though its probably one of the most advanced and heavy load games.

Agree entirely. Those who haven't witnessed these bugs yet are just downright lucky.
My phone freezes all the time - to the extent that it sometimes takes me more than 30 seconds to hang up a call (since the screen locks and then you can't unlock it... and then it's this whole embarrassing ordeal of power on power off).
Every single time I press home ( which is pretty much the only way to go back - since the back button is pretty much completely unresponsive) - I get the HTC white screen & then loading for 30 seconds.
This phone is slower than my Nexus One. I really feel like I have gone down a notch instead of up.
Sorry to hear of all the troubles with the Sensation. I had to go thru 3 other units before I found one that worked well. I am on my 4th Sensation 4G now. This one seems to be free from the issues mentioned. The 1st one had the lockscreen not responsive issue and also the build quality of the case to the phone was squeaky after 2 weeks of use. The 2nd one had a poor screen. The widgets would have static lines running horizontally thru it. The 3rd one had an overly recessed power button and loose volume button. The 4th was the good one. Thus far its worked well with no major issues. There have been a couple times of quick HTC reboots, but that's bout it. I can live with mild reboots due to low memories.

Can sense be avoided with another launcher?

Im going to be switching to T-Mobile and the Sensation looks like the top phone at the moment. Unfortunately, sense slows this phone BIG TIME. Can i just bypass that with another launcher?
Yes, just install one from the market, push home and it will give you an option. that's just the launcher tho, not the whole system sense integration. But this phone was made for sense (interface not launcher, I personally use go launcher), I haven't noticed any lag.

Yes and no. The problem most people have isn't with the interface but with how much resources it takes up. If you add another launcher you don't reduce the usage of sense. If you just want a different interface then yes you can drop another one on top. From my experience ADW is slow as dirt on this device so i wouldn't recommend that one but i've heard people have had success with launcher pro
For me launcher pro and adw are slow. The but go Launcher runs great. Very smooth.

Its quite sad as the hardware is pretty solid. They killed the phone with the overhead of sense 3.0 though

Yeah even though they are simply overlays and would only take up more resources, I tried both ADW and Launcher Pro (my usual) on my Sensation... both were ridiculously slow to the point of "Well screw this I'm sticking with Sense till they root this thing!"

Well hang on there a sec, I didn't say the phone itself was laggy... in fact quite the opposite this thing flies. It was only ADW/Launcher Pro that lagged it out. I have had NO complaints with it's snappiness at all, and I'm harsh on judging my phones! This one has given me no reason to ***** about the speed... I just prefer stock Android over Sense, which even though it has some great features, still bugs me aesthetically.
I too was worried after I played with an in-store unit and noticed it laggy, but I think that is a simple result of everyone and their mother going in there and messing with it. All I can say is don't take the in-store performance too seriously... mine has acted nothing like the store unit did.

I have been VERY happy with mine and I don't regret not waiting for the Hercules at all.
Sense is an entire UI integration made by HTC. It is not just a simple home app that you can replace (although you can replace the Sense launcher with something better like ADW). Unless you install an AOSP ROM like CyanogenMod when the phone is rooted you will NEVER be rid of Sense no matter how many bloatware apps you remove or HTC components you freeze. Period. End of story.
Is there anything about that you didn't understand?

I really have to laugh at those who say ADW is slow on the Sensation. Maybe you all don't know how to optimize the settings gs but you couldn't be more wrong. I love to see a post with a mature, dignified, helpful approach... So, what approach were YOU going for?
Listen bud... try to imagine a world where posting unnecessary (ie completely unhelpful and rude) garbage like this does NOT in fact impress anyone. I know man... I sure wish it did too. I'm super glad that ADW runs buttery smooth for you, and had you responded with a helpful "Hey ADW runs great for me, here's how I have it configured..." I would have listened and actually could have respected you. Instead, you post trash like "I laugh at those, I'm right you're wrong" etc... As such I couldn't care less what you have to say.

PyroIce Tips, Tricks, and Help Guide. -Please Post Your Own Too :D-

I've made PyroIce my new Daily, and we all know it has some bugs. So I thought I'd start a thread to help Unclutter the fourm.
Here's the first thing I've found out.
- Wi-Fi Networks that are WEP/PSK locked can be connected to without having to Manualy put the name in.
Nova Launcher is a Great ICS Replacement Launcher. It can be downloaded from the Market. Or found on XDA as a flashable Zip. That makes it a system app, and allows widgets to be accessed from the launcher.
It has homescreen effects, drawer effects. Custom Grid Sizes, and all widgets are resizeable. Its the ADW of ICS, and is better than CM9's Launcher for 4.0.1.

to be honest, its a great rom. for people that know how to deal with beta roms. if your lookin for a grief free rom, id use another one. i use this but i dont mind the small issues and can deal with them. the user interface is ICS, so the same as ICS yeah? same and gingerbread.. no, lil different. more user friendly i think.
New release is wifey friendly... I think mine could handle it and she has to gripe for a couple months b4 she asks me to root her phone....

rom the truth is a spectacular friend and has some little problems sierto but you can live with them apart is one of the few developers for our phone and that is to applaud and thank you

Good, the only reason I won't root my girls phone is cause I don't wanna fix it.
Does anyone know if you can unlink the notification volume and ringer volume in ICS?

first off, i think this rom is simply great, considering that ics is on very few devices right now, and that our phone is a bit slow in general with development (nothing against all the devs on this phone, cuz what they have made are all really good)
two questions:
does anyone know why the camcorder app is limited to 720p recording? it's definitely not a big issue, but this camera is considered to be one of the best, seems like a shame to waste it.
also, any way to fix the htc dialer showing up in the call and to answer a call you have to unlock first?
how's everyone's battery life doing? mine's much better than when i had cm7 on it
I was looking at 1080p but for some strange reason libstagefright camerasource detects that 1080p is not available. Coudlnt binary hack that, and no idea why that happens.
You can use fullscreen caller id to let you receive calls without unlocking, or can use widgetlocker from market with security set off.

is it just me or are some things off screen? like the button to remove a widget, or when you add a pattern to your lockscreen the bottom row of circles is like half way off the screen, also I tried playing shadowgun and the controls were completely wacked whick never happened on any roms ive use before...i asked already on rootzwiki but i figured it be a better idea to ask here too any tips or tricks to help me out?

gotcha ill switch over to the non sense version now, thanks for the quick reply.
Posting here because I'm still a "New" user and cant post in dev form.
I'm running PyroIce Sense and I cant view any flash websites. Anyone else having this problem? I've tried re-installing Flash, Dolphin (wont work on stock browser as well), and reflashed the rom.
Any ideas?

Ill look at this. Seemed to work, but recheckin.

Works if I zoom on it enough. Otherwise glitched if not zoomed enough. But works. Youtube at least.

Try opera mobile - proper flash support is one of their selling points. Unsure if it'll help, but worth a shot - mobile, not mini.

If i enter full screen browser hangs. if i zoom in, it will play, but it's very choppy with elements of my wallpaper mixed in, sometimes it's the notifications bar that draws itself into the flash. It's very odd.
thanks for the help! (loving this rom BTW)

Still having problems with flash, But it's not too big of a deal. I have a tab to watch YouTube.
Patch 3 did seem to greatly speed up the browser.
Again, Thanks for the awesome ROM!

Multitasking Fix?

I believe that one of the devs on here said they found HTC's framework to be killing tasks way before they should be, any chance that this will be documented for use with all 2012 HTC phones? Many phones like the Evo LTE, One X, One S, etc, are running into this issue, and it seems to be a very common problem.
My boyfriends' HTC Raider just received a 4.0.3 update from gingerbread going from sense 3.5 to 3.6, and suddenly multitasking on his is just like my One X... I really loathe this new direction HTC's taking.

I read about how there's some HTC code that basically forces tasks to hibernate/kill after a certain amount of time, and I thought that might be a big reason why multitasking is broken.
Why are there still threads about multitasking? The 4.0.4 largely fixes multitasking problem.

No it doesn't. Not even close.

Since updating this morning, I've found multitasking to be hugely improved. I can go 3 or 4 apps back, that haven't been run in awhile, and they're still sitting in the same spot. In the past they would definitely have had to restart. Really liking the update.

Because there is no confirmation that they removed the task killing code and reverted back to stock memory management.

Ditto. Post AT&T update I've yet to have the multitasking issues. I'm not sure if HTC did something to improve multitasking or if things just aren't flagged to be killed as fast because there is more RAM available upon boot up.
The issue has become a non issue post update for me though.
The update certainly fixed mine, and I HATED it before. Browser no longer reloads when I switch back, nor does Tapatalk, both of which were notorious culprits. Sense doesn't crash when coming out of gameplay now, either.
I went from less than 200mb of free RAM on a reboot to between 350-400mb of free RAM.
To me, multitasking is night and day different on 4.0.4.

Every other post is saying how much multitasking improved, so go install CleanRom or other 4.0.4 based rom and judge for yourself. I ran 4 apps last night for an hour between Chrome, Facebook, Phone, Message, etc and multitasked them no problem with a ton of screen on/off. None of them had to reload once. It's not perfect, but to say not even close is a retarded statement.
The main problem with multitasking is that by default, it's limited to 15 apps max, so unless it's running as a service, there can only be 15 apps running at once. And since HTC likes to include all these extra apps, like HTC message uploader, music enhancer, HTC services(runs as an app actually), etc, 15 apps is not a lot, so when a new app is launched, it starts to kill apps no matter how much memory is left.
I've already discovered how to raise the limit, I'm just testing a couple of things before I release it
It does seem to be better on 4.0.4. The one thing that annoys me is that while I don't need to reload pages and all, I do have to get into the recent apps even for apps I don't close out the app. But it's much better than before.

Cool, that was what I was wondering about.
Looks like there are still things yet to be discovered about the multitasking shenanigans inside our ROMs...
While more ram has indeed solved hangs and reboot issues, I find chrome still reloads, facebook still reloads, among others... For me, multitasking is no different than before and I've so far tried most of the 4.0.4 roms.
So yeah, I'd say multitasking has a ways to go yet, but that's just me... The above user's response is NOT retarded; that's just disrespectful... More like it's just his experience, and as far as user experiences goes, I'm finding the One XL to be really inconsistent.
Still, definitely an improvement. Baby steps.
