Multitasking Fix? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I believe that one of the devs on here said they found HTC's framework to be killing tasks way before they should be, any chance that this will be documented for use with all 2012 HTC phones? Many phones like the Evo LTE, One X, One S, etc, are running into this issue, and it seems to be a very common problem.

My boyfriends' HTC Raider just received a 4.0.3 update from gingerbread going from sense 3.5 to 3.6, and suddenly multitasking on his is just like my One X... I really loathe this new direction HTC's taking.

I read about how there's some HTC code that basically forces tasks to hibernate/kill after a certain amount of time, and I thought that might be a big reason why multitasking is broken.

Why are there still threads about multitasking? The 4.0.4 largely fixes multitasking problem.

Since updating this morning, I've found multitasking to be hugely improved. I can go 3 or 4 apps back, that haven't been run in awhile, and they're still sitting in the same spot. In the past they would definitely have had to restart. Really liking the update.

Because there is no confirmation that they removed the task killing code and reverted back to stock memory management.

Ditto. Post AT&T update I've yet to have the multitasking issues. I'm not sure if HTC did something to improve multitasking or if things just aren't flagged to be killed as fast because there is more RAM available upon boot up.
The issue has become a non issue post update for me though.

The update certainly fixed mine, and I HATED it before. Browser no longer reloads when I switch back, nor does Tapatalk, both of which were notorious culprits. Sense doesn't crash when coming out of gameplay now, either.
I went from less than 200mb of free RAM on a reboot to between 350-400mb of free RAM.
To me, multitasking is night and day different on 4.0.4.

Every other post is saying how much multitasking improved, so go install CleanRom or other 4.0.4 based rom and judge for yourself. I ran 4 apps last night for an hour between Chrome, Facebook, Phone, Message, etc and multitasked them no problem with a ton of screen on/off. None of them had to reload once. It's not perfect, but to say not even close is a retarded statement.

The main problem with multitasking is that by default, it's limited to 15 apps max, so unless it's running as a service, there can only be 15 apps running at once. And since HTC likes to include all these extra apps, like HTC message uploader, music enhancer, HTC services(runs as an app actually), etc, 15 apps is not a lot, so when a new app is launched, it starts to kill apps no matter how much memory is left.
I've already discovered how to raise the limit, I'm just testing a couple of things before I release it

It does seem to be better on 4.0.4. The one thing that annoys me is that while I don't need to reload pages and all, I do have to get into the recent apps even for apps I don't close out the app. But it's much better than before.

Cool, that was what I was wondering about.
Looks like there are still things yet to be discovered about the multitasking shenanigans inside our ROMs...

While more ram has indeed solved hangs and reboot issues, I find chrome still reloads, facebook still reloads, among others... For me, multitasking is no different than before and I've so far tried most of the 4.0.4 roms.
So yeah, I'd say multitasking has a ways to go yet, but that's just me... The above user's response is NOT retarded; that's just disrespectful... More like it's just his experience, and as far as user experiences goes, I'm finding the One XL to be really inconsistent.
Still, definitely an improvement. Baby steps.

[Q] Is RAM and internal memory amount enough?

Hello guys!
AFAIK Sensation has 1 gb of internal storage memory and 768 mbytes of RAM. I hear people say that of that RAM, only ~170 mbytes are available to the user.
Do you experience problems with memory like when applications start to stutter when you start a few of them simultaneously and do you have to delete other apps to make room for new ones (because of ridiculously small internal storage)?
There are no ram issues with the sensation. I'm coming from a g2x which only had 512 and I always had free ram even when I had open everything I normally had open. I constantly had about 95 MB free. With the sensation I constantly have around 150 free with everything open. Someone once said here on the forums. If you constantly have a lot of free then its pretty much wasted ram. And there is 558 or something like that available. The rest is reserved for the gpu. That's the case on many phones and tablets now. They reserve some of the ram for the graphics processor.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
The only ram issues I ran into is after closing Firefox sense would reboot. I'm almost positive its a Firefox issue though. Because that is the only time I had that issue.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Thanks! But what about the internal storage? Is 1gb enough or will I have to make compromises and delete rarely used apps to make room for new ones?
I haven't had any issues with internal storage yet either. You can alway just move apps to the sd card if you feel like you are losing space.

I don't use as many apps as others but I have about 30-40 apps installed and still have 910Mb of free space. Unless you install over 300 apps I think you'll be fine.
As far as the ram goes if I use a launcher other than sense I can get over 200mb free, compared to just over 100 with sense. I like sense alright, but the ram usage does make me a bit worried. Also I had the sense reboot quite a bit when moving between aps and even when waking up the phone, which I think may be a ram issue (though I certainly don't know it could be something else but I don't have to put up with a 5+ second load with other launchers) .

I really can't imagine that it wouldn't be running in the background in some compacity as the lockscreen and contacts etc are all from htc. Only kinda negative thing is you loose the htc widgets. Also I somehow lost the ability to longtap on the homescreen to edit widgets, but I'm sure that is from me doing something wrong; I just haven't google foo'd the right answer yet.

Even if you use a launcher sense will still be running in the background. At least that's how it use to be. I think you might be able to kill it at start up with a app like android assistant or something.

+1 Although I dont have the bloat since I have an unbranded sensation

This phone isn't usable without LauncherPro for me.

Thank God for 3rd party launchers. I can't stand Sense and I have given it every chance as well. Apart from the extremely annoying frequent Sense reboots the phone lags and things feel slower than on my old Incredible. Just switching from Sense to LauncherPro without changing anything else I get back over 50MB of RAM. That's ridiculous, talk about bloat.
I still haven't s-off my phone yet but I'm starting to consider it. Especially when we get stable builds from Cyanogen.

If I can't install the apps I want then the phone is useless. Enjoy limiting what you install on your phone to keep running how you want.
I have been using ADW on it since I got it. I hate Sense and always have. To much eye candy for no apparent reason. Ill take function over form any day of the week.
By the way, I just switched everyone from the other thread regarding this same topic over to ADW from LP and gave them my settings. The 5 that did all agree that ADW is faster than LP with the correct settings. Also, the free version of ADW will not be as fast due to it not having a lot of the settings. You have to purchase ADW EX in order to feel the speed.

I can't figure it out but my phone hates Sense. Even after I uninstalled the Good for Enterprise app which I thought was causing the issues Sense starts slowing down and then craps out after a little while. It literally restarts Sense after every app install or update or even uninstall. I don't think its a memory issue only because there's plenty free but it doesn't happen right after a reboot either. I can't figure it out but it definitely seems like something is leaking memory or corrupting Sense.
When is T-Mobile releasing our update? I'm good using LP for now but it'd be nice to have a proper functioning stock launcher as an option as well.
Sent from my thumbs to your eyes using a Sensation 4G
I was running ADW EX for a few days. It was fast as ****, but I missed the Sense 3.0. Widgets and interface. My phone has no lag at all and works perfect with Sense as well. If it was laggy, I would definitely drop it for ADW. My brother uses Launcher Pro and is a big fan. To each his own.
Totally agree, to each his own.
For me ... this phone is totally usable with Sense...
Each launcher has it's pluses and minuses. There are quite a few alternatives to Sense widgets but none has completely done it for me. Same goes for HTC's apps, especially People/Phone and Email apps.
The major problem with Sense 3 was the many frequent Launcher restarts, which is almost solved now with the custom rom I'm using (CrystalPyramid), been using it for 3 days and it's been as fast as can be for me. I really can't be happier with my Sensation now.
The only two things I really miss about other launchers are changing home number of rows and resizable widgets.

Have you tried playing around with the Memory Usage and other options under LauncherPro's Preferences --> Advanced Settings menu?
I was already pretty happy with LP's performance on my phone, but a couple of experiments with those tweaks made it even better for me. Hopefully it'll make things a little rosier for you too? That is, if you're even interested in LP anymore
I would get the white screen with green HTC logo almost everytime I went out of an app so, started using Launcher Pro. Today just for the frell of it
I decided to download Go Launcher EX. I got say its 1, Free, 2, there are
loads of free themes and 3 customizable!
The guy at T-Mobile said that once this phone gets 2.3.4 and the HTC
update as well then Sense might not be so buggy.
Here's a link to view about the launcher above.

Push notifications

I hardly ever get push notifications on my phone...coming from iPhone where I'd get them like 10 seconds after real time.
I really only use a couple apps where I need them like snowmobile (for score updates) and facebook.

If not, any suggestions on how to fix this?

Are you running the stock rom? I am on stock/rooted and don't have an init.d.
hehe.. I am too impatient to wait for a reply, I installed a custom rom that supports init.d and all is good.
It really does seem to work! Thanks!
FYI, if you want to try this on a stock rooted ROM, download minfree manager from the market and use the following mild multitasking values from the one x script
10 16 24 30 34 40
Tried it out and it really seems to help. I've got maps, gmail, chrome, pocketcasts, minfree in memory at the same time and only maps refreshes when switched to (but it's a pig, so unsurprised). Don't set "apply at boot" until you're sure you don't have any issues.
This works! I just installed it on the new Zydroid 3.0 1.84 base ROM. I have chrome beta, Pandora, Pulse, Currents, GMail and Facebook all running, and NONE refresh even after having them in the background for 5-10 minutes.
This phone FINALLY works as it should. I can switch between apps without being afraid that my current position will be killed. And Pandora was practically unusable for me as it kept getting "cleaned", causing it to hang, skip songs, etc. It's now working as it had on every other android phone I've owned.

Youtube always dumps the stream cache when you leave the app, is this supposed to be new?
The GS2 has something like 200 more megs of RAM to use compared to the One S, which might as well be the difference between multitasking that works and one that doesn't at all.
So far the only phone that doesn't have multitasking issues that launched with ICS is the US variant Galaxy S3.

Because HTC made it this way.... It's not a bug or anything. It's meant to be this way. Doesn't mean anyone likes it, but then again, it doesn't really bother me.

That's all fine and good, but they should not be allowed to advertise 1gB of RAM if you can only keep one program in memory at a time.

I just tried it on a Desire HD. I went from a youtube video, to messaging. When I got back to youtube, it dumped the cache and had to buffer the video for a while before it started again. Is that what you're experiencing?
On my One S, when I leave the YouTube app the video pauses. When I go back into the YouTube app, it starts replaying from where it left off. It does take a second or two for it to prepare the video for playback, but overall it is pretty seamless. Compare that to my laptop where the YouTube video replays instantly (at least the sound does) but the video is all choppy for several seconds until it catches up.
One of the main new developments of android ICS was the improved multitasking functionality, and manufacturers have poorly understood the concept. To have more fluid multitasking your priority lies on increasing RAM over having a fancier quad-core processor! Something well shown by the HTC one S with is S4 dual-core that is able run apps very smoothly, rivalling the One X, but cant run many of them.
hm so i should have gotten the s3 then lol.
but after feeling how this phone is and just the quality and how nice htc sense is idk if i can go back.
they just need to give the next phone 2gbs of ram!
If you install a stock ics or jb rom you won't have this issue. I didn't mind Sense on this phone but the multitasking is brutal. I can't take it... The recent apps implementation is brutal and more time consuming than just going back to the home screen and app drawer. Never mind that it won't cache apps properly..
All the talk of stream lining Sense 4.0 is a joke. A sense rom is almost half a gig, I stock rom is a third of that, come on!
