Bought used Y01 tablet - should O keep it? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I recently bought a used Nvidia Shield tablet that happened to be a deactivated one with a Y01 batterie for which the former owner already initiated the replacement process. It was described as being defective and that it suddenly went off and cannot be turned on again and might be used to get replacement parts. No word about the bad battery, the recall and the initiated replacement.
As I've seen such power off situations with my Tegra Note 7 I thought that might be repairable and so I bought it (somtimes my Tegra Note turnes off and cannot be turned on again).
After reading a lot in this forum and understanding what device I have, I don't know if I should keep it or try to return it to the seller. Beside the fact if it is possible that some clever folks find a way to make it usable again (and hopefully I would be clever enough to follow that procedure), I am not sure if I want to own a device with hazardous battery.
What do you think? Is it worth keeping this devide and hoping, that there is a way to make it usable again?
Regards
Sven

It can't be resuscitated without tools only Nvidia has. And it you did wake it up, it might possibly start a fire. Which insurance may not cover since the defect is known.
I would not suggest keeping it.

How did you acquire the tablet? If it was on eBay or some other online site, it is illegal to knowingly sell recalled items which that person obviously did. Contact the site you bought it on, and file a complaint that you were sold a defective recalled item, and you may get a refund.

I second, get a refund.
You paid for a working tablet, not a broken one.

No he paid for a broken one... But it still should be illegal to knowingly sell a recalled tablet that has been replaced.

Well anyway the battery is easily replaceable, so that is not even the problem, the problem is really that the device is locked.
There is some blahblahblah that someone could revive a locked nvidia shield from the recall, but it probably is a BS, no idea.

Get a refund as fast as possible. Is not allowed to sell a recalled tablet.
As far as exploding goes, the chance is very small (4 from 80.000), so keep the tablet and follow the forums here. Something might come up one day that would bring it back to life

As the tablets age, that "4 reported incidents" is sure to rise. Also, there have been lots of other incidents not as severe but still due to problems with the battery (swelling etc.).
Get a refund, but keep in mind you can't ship the tablet back without special permissions, at least not in the U.S. and many other countries. The box they give us to send in the return one is specially lined, and contains the appropriate markings, and the airbill they give us accounts for the special status of the battery.
If you don't drop the tablet off at a recycler/disposer of electronics, at least take the battery out and drop that off.

[Q] Transformer water damage, suggestions please.

Okay so I spilled some juice on this badboy and well it sat in the juice until I got home and realized. I immediately threw it in some rice (3 days) and thankfully it did dry out. The unit was working fine and fully functional except for obvious signs of water damage when the screen is own like splotches under the screen. And there is a clearly visible one (even when screen off) in the lower right corner. Some days later it stopped powering on all together. Here is where you all come in. Has anyone had to have their unit repaired third party? If so please suggest a third party fix. I am within my 30 days of purchase so do you think Best Buy or ASUS will repair/replace the unit? No, I don't have the extended warranty from Best Buy but I could still purchase it. Should I do that and file a claim in a couple months? How about purchasing a third party extended warranty then filing a claim in a couple months? Help me, help me PLEASE!
You can probably get it repaired, but I'm sure it will cost you unless you already have water damage protection. Accidents happen. If BB will let you get a policy now, go for it. But just know that you're basically committing fraud, as you'd have to lie about the date of damage.
seems like you already know what you want to do...you just need people to share the moral burden
getting it fixed by asus is prabobly going to require screen replacement, which is i think 50% of the cost of the device. at least this way, you can sleep at night.
or, just get a HP touchpad and hope the android port is a success.
on a completely absolutely unrelated note...i just want to brag about this, my TF keyboard's response is aboslutely on point right now...no lag, nothing.

Check to see if it's covered by your home contents insurance, some sort of accidental damage clause.

If you can still buy the warranty from Best Buy then buy that, then wait a bit and bring it in. Understand you will likely be without the unit for a long while as they attempt to get it repaired. Bringing it back to Best Buy in this state however would be wrong because you damaged it. The Best Buy plan allows you to damage your device and they will repair it, so while it may be morally questionable to buy the warranty after you do the damage, I would say it is less so than the other options. Understand that Best Buy has the right to refuse to sell you the warranty after the fact if you don't bring the device in first, so it is possible you won't even be able to buy it.

I agree, at least you already have that insurance. Or possibly renter's insurance if you're in that situation.
With home insurance the deducible may be higher than the cost of the device. Unless the device is scheduled, or you have a 'computer' clause that considers it scheduled even though it isn't. If this was a $2000 device then sure it would make sense, but for a $400 device it is unlikely home owners is going to help a lot.
The only reason I would advocate buying the warranty then using it through Best Buy is that if they are willing to sell it to you sight unseen it almost serves them right to get stuck with a repair like this. Have you bought a cell phone from them, they essentially advocate running over you phone when you want to replace it to use the black tie service. They are essentially selling abuse insurance with the understanding that most people won't do it. Which is why the extended warranty through them is so expensive. Most companies make a TON of money on extended warranties, very few of these warranties ever get used.
One thing I would not advocate is any deception on the part of purchasing the plan. If you have to sign anything saying it is in good working order, or you have to tell them it is in good working order then you should stop right there and walk out.

newegg return policy

I'm hesitant to write this post for fear of sounding like I'm just whining, but due to the build issues with this particular device, I think it's appropriate that I warn people who are planning to purchase from Newegg.com. Their return policy is 30 days FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE DATE ONLY. That means, you have 30 days to RMA a defective device and any subsequent defective devices. If your 3rd device is defective, you're stuck with Asus' warranty.
To their credit, I contacted them by phone and they gave me a "one time only" exception. I wish I could just get a refund, but the item was purchased on a gift credit card that is not in my name, and that would be problematic. So, I have one shot to get an acceptable unit.
I've been doing business with Newegg for computer parts for years and they're service, selection and prices have all been excellent with this notable exception. I will probably continue to do business with them, but for an item like the tf700 that has known build issues, I recommend purchasing it from BestBuy or some place like that where you can return things a bit more easily.
i purchased mines from newegg and yesterday was feeling upset that i couldnt return it. I was at my wits end with this tablet. I was convinced to unlock and root, and since doing so, i am very impressed. This device is 10x better than when i first got it. So far, everything is running much smoother. I was hesitant to root because i didnt feel like going thru all that. but with the help of certain members, the process was very easy and i saw results right away.
Just my two cents.

I'm actually having second thoughts about RMAing this one. The screen is not flat (visibly bowed out along the top edge) and it clicks a little. I'm afraid it will get worse over time or even crack. But, I actually love the performance. I haven't pushed it that hard, but the IO issues don't seem to affect my experience much. Knowing I only have one more shot at a good unit, without resorting to returning to Asus, I might just stay with this one and hope it doesn't fall apart.
Either way, I fully intend to unlock the unit I end up with.

They have have gotten real bad with their return policies over the years. I forgot a USB cable one time and they sent the RMA item right back to me. And wasted many days off my return period and then wouldn't honor it later. I stopped buying anything from there anymore.

That is better than Tiger Direct. I bought a Prime when they were first available back last December. I had wifi and GPS issues but held on to the Prime for about 3 weeks hoping for a firmware update to address the issues. When I attempted to get a RMA from Tiger Direct I was informed that their return policy for tablets was 14 days. If I had known that I would not have purchased from TD.

Why is there so much hate towards the Shield ?

Why is there so much hate towards the Nvidia Shield ? I went to gamestop and see if they have any accessories and the rep replied, why would want to buy accessories ? The Shield is a piece of crap. It's not just the rep but other people have said the same thing. I bought my Shield two days ago and love it.

It does have issue. Wait till the flex cables starts getting bad in another few months. The you can only use it while connected to HDMI. The flex cable is part of the LCD. So when the parts do become available they will be pricey.
So i bought a device for $200 just so it doesn't work in a few months ?

You might be one of the lucky ones. Seems to be split about 30% bad and 70% ok.
Why so much hate towards the iPhone when it first got out? Because it is a new, largely misunderstood product and those who call it crap typically never touched it.
The relevant thing about the SHIELD is that the vast majority of its owners seem to love it. The opinion of uninformed people doesn't matter.
Think also that Gamestop might not be very happy at the idea of a device for which you cannot come and buy games at their stores.

How do you come with that estimate?
If you have a problem with the flexi-cable, this is clearly a hardware defect and you should have your unit RMA'd. The feedback on NVIDIA's service has been very good so far.

Did you not even read any of the post I quoted? Based on the ones saying they have issue and the ones saying they do not it is about the split that I said it was. Also if you had read any of the post you would have seen that I bought the unit on Ebay under the impression it had a power problem which would be an easy fix. it however is not a power problem but a flex cable issue.
So since I bought used on ebay for 40 bucks, sending it in for repair or RMA is not an option. I will just wait till parts become available. Or throw it away and count a 40 dollar lose. No big deal for me unlike those who did spend 200+ on it.

Well I have read the posts and my answer was not specifically targeted at you, but first and foremost to the people who spent 200+ on it and specifically to the OP who was worried his unit could stop working after a few months.
It is possible that your unit is a pre-production one that was handed to developers. These are known to be of lesser build quality and had flexi-cable issues. The production units I own since launch do not show this issue so far and I am a quite heavy user.
Just wanted to point out that your estimate of failing units is anything but reliable, so hopefully people won't start making ideas based on it.
What's about those from Europe who get the white screen of death and try to RMA it, will Nvidia accept and repair it on warrenty?
I'd also have to go with the whole "The only people who hate on it are the ones who have never touched it" reason. I bought my Shield to replace my PSP and my HP Touchpad as an emulation/Android gaming device ~couple months ago and I've yet to regret the purchase. The main reason I didn't buy it when it was announced was because I thought the price was a bit too steep, but now that it's (still) $200 I think it's definitely worth it.

As long as you have proof of purchase from the US or Canada then they must honor the warranty regardless of where you live. What they will do is stick you with shipping cost most likely both ways.
I unfortunately do not.
I bought it off a german seller, but maybe I can ask there.

[Q] Nexus 5 Warranty Replacement

Recently, my Nexus 5 has been acting up. The problem specifically is that when I plug it into the OEM charger (along with 3 other chargers that I've tried), it will only hold the charge. It will not charge past the battery% that it is sitting at. Sometimes, it even drains somehow. I've tried going back to stock, clearing my cache, and other troubleshooting steps that Google sent me.
After letting them know that I had no luck with getting the phone to charge properly, they tell me that they will provide a replacement (hold on credit card, blah blah blah) but that the replacement unit will be REFURBISHED and LIKE-NEW condition.. Is this how the Google warranty has always been? It does not sound right to me. I've only had the device for 8 months, and they offer me a refurbished replacement for a hardware-faulty phone?
Just looking for a quick answer and some peace of mind if someone could quickly clarify if their refurbished replacements are something regular and I shouldn't be worried about swapping out my phone for something in like-new condition.
They used to give new devices for rma. Now that the phone has been out for some time they only give refurbished ones for rma. So yes, it's normal.

I called Google yesterday about my Nexus 5, but for a different issue with the SIM card. Same as you, "hold on credit card, blah blah blah" and then I received the email to see it was going to be a 'REFURBISHED and LIKE-NEW' unit. Knowing that the potential for abuse or misuse on a returned and refurbished unit is seemingly limitless I called them. The woman who I spoke with said that they just changed their policy 2 weeks ago and now they will all be refurbished units. They said that if I receive the refurbished unit and I don't like it, I can just send it back. They also said that if I receive a refurbished unit and it has problems after sever replacements I could go the route of returning it all together.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
I may stand alone when I say this, but how is getting a refurbished replacement for an 8 month old phone anything but fair? I can understand if it was a month old, but after 8 months your phone is thoroughly used. The refurbs are like new so you'll be getting a device that's in better condition than yours... I dunno, pick your battles I guess.
Refurbs are fine. They go back to LG and are put through the same QQ checks that new devices are. If housing or glass have any cracks or scratches they are replaced. The device will look brand new and they only way most people would be able to tell is because Google is telling you.

Exactly, every other device you would get refurbs from the start. The fact that Google was replacing them with new devices for 8 months is the surprising part, not that they've now switched to the standard business practice as the device nears EOL. It's like complaining about Google cross shipping the replacements. they go above and beyond what is expected of them and people still find reasons to complain.
If you return a used product, you can expect a used (refurbished) product in return.
I RMA'd my device due to a faulty earpiece. It is a 7 month old phone, and the earpiece just simply started acting up.
The refurbished device that I received is nearly flawless, but at the charging port there are quite some scratches. It seems the previous owner would fumble the cable around without looking, trying to plug it in.
http://postimg.org/image/ikp2n1z07/
They are bad enough that I am attempting to return it and get another one. I understand that they are refurbished, but I dont one want that is in a worse condition that mine. I am super caring to my phone. I expect something similar than that.
I will update as to how it goes!
Thanks for the responses (excluding the slight opinionated hostility). I feel a bit more comfortable about a refurbished device since I haven't had issues with phones before. I was skeptical because I had my Galaxy Nexus for 3 years with zero issues, it was the best phone I've ever had, so I was really surprised that a battery could crap out after 8 months just like that. I'll probably be ordering mine soon since I don't think a full refund is possible, and quite frankly, the device is quite better than the SGS products.

That actually looks like they were using some sort of dock with their phone, hence the squarish imprint. Not the worst but I agree with you it shouldn't be in a worse condition then what you sent in, and that would not qualify as "as new" in most people's opinion.

After Kill - What do with the Tablet?

Hi,
i want ask what you do after Activating the New Tablet with the old Tablet? Did you sell it or use it for another Projects or install Custom ROMs on it?
What would you to recommend ?
Thanks for your Answers.
You can't sell the old tablet. Illegal to do so in most places and you can't ship it without major hassles. Just recycle it or discharge battery and keep the thing for spare parts. In the US just send it in with the box provided.
Sent back in time via Android 9.0 TimeText feature.
Here in Germany you dont get a Box to send back. You get a Information Paper that you must recycle it. But i think its to worth to recycle. And on german ebay many Shields are sold with the Information that this is a Shield with the Battery. So all fine
The Shiel was released 1 -2 Years ago, i dont know any Case where the Battery is going to fire. I think its a Hoax or Fake. The Exchange must have another Reasons.
I was wondering this myself. I'm in the states and have the bad battery (my tablet has gotten warm maybe three times in the ~year+ I've had it, never to a point I've been worried about it). I know here we are supposed to send them back, but I'd love to install Ubuntu on it and get the new one and keep it on stock rooted (with OTA disabled). Not sure I want to take the chance of doing the RMA since mine actually works very nicely, then I don't know what kind of recourse Nvidia has if I keep both tablets.
