newegg return policy - Asus Transformer TF700

I'm hesitant to write this post for fear of sounding like I'm just whining, but due to the build issues with this particular device, I think it's appropriate that I warn people who are planning to purchase from Newegg.com. Their return policy is 30 days FROM THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE DATE ONLY. That means, you have 30 days to RMA a defective device and any subsequent defective devices. If your 3rd device is defective, you're stuck with Asus' warranty.
To their credit, I contacted them by phone and they gave me a "one time only" exception. I wish I could just get a refund, but the item was purchased on a gift credit card that is not in my name, and that would be problematic. So, I have one shot to get an acceptable unit.
I've been doing business with Newegg for computer parts for years and they're service, selection and prices have all been excellent with this notable exception. I will probably continue to do business with them, but for an item like the tf700 that has known build issues, I recommend purchasing it from BestBuy or some place like that where you can return things a bit more easily.

I was convinced to unlock and root, and since doing so, i am very impressed. This device is 10x better than when i first got it. So far, everything is running much smoother. I was hesitant to root because i didnt feel like going thru all that. but with the help of certain members, the process was very easy and i saw results right away.

I'm actually having second thoughts about RMAing this one. The screen is not flat (visibly bowed out along the top edge) and it clicks a little. I'm afraid it will get worse over time or even crack. But, I actually love the performance. I haven't pushed it that hard, but the IO issues don't seem to affect my experience much. Knowing I only have one more shot at a good unit, without resorting to returning to Asus, I might just stay with this one and hope it doesn't fall apart.
Either way, I fully intend to unlock the unit I end up with.

They have have gotten real bad with their return policies over the years. I forgot a USB cable one time and they sent the RMA item right back to me. And wasted many days off my return period and then wouldn't honor it later. I stopped buying anything from there anymore.

well if there are physical defects, i would definetly return it and get a new one.

That is better than Tiger Direct. I bought a Prime when they were first available back last December. I had wifi and GPS issues but held on to the Prime for about 3 weeks hoping for a firmware update to address the issues. When I attempted to get a RMA from Tiger Direct I was informed that their return policy for tablets was 14 days. If I had known that I would not have purchased from TD.

[Q] Anyone have experience with Asus RMA?

I have some massive light bleed and unbalanced speakers. Also sometimes the charger doesn't work for some odd reason.
I'm considering RMA'ing this back to Asus. This item was actually fairly new I think because I received it around 5/13 after TigerDirect received a shipment but apparently the issues weren't ironed out.
I'm thinking I should maybe wait until middle of June at the minimum before trying my chances with an RMA because they may not have issues sorted out. What I'm actually curious about is what the RMA process entails?
What do they send back to you? Has anyone had their TF repaired not replaced? Or do they only replace them?
Also do they only send you a unit back or do they send you a brand new TF in a sealed box? I'm a little hesitant about sending a unit in and getting a unit back without a matching box (OCD).

Why deal with them? I heard it'll take 2-3 weeks to get it back and they make you pay to ship there. Just go to your retailer and get it replaced that way.
I have some experience with RMA. My display went dead and I could only access my TF via the HDMI port. It was a little trouble preparing the device for RMA because I had a custom kernel and custom ROM running
I was also a little concerned because you don't read a lot of good things about ASUS RMA on the web (just google for ASUS RMA). But my experiences were rather positive.
Important note: Write down your S/N before you send in your device, you might need it later to track your repair status!
After I contacted their support I got an email where I should describe the problem. After I explained my problem, I got another email with a return form and a form to describe my problem again, this one was sent in with my device. Besides that, I got a repair number.
I sent in my device (only my device, no charger or cables or other accessoiries) in the original box with the return form and problem description and could track my repair status with the repair number or Serial number on rma.asus.de (If your repair number doesn't work, use your S/N or contact the support, the repair number seems to change when the device arrives for repairing. They forgot to mention that )
The shipping was rather slow, but after my TF was delivered, it took them exactly 3 days until it was on its way back to me, and another day until it arrived. The display was fixed of course, and the newest firmware update was installed without deleting my data.
As you can see, they don't replace it if not necessary, they repair it. And it is quite easy and fast.

I can't confirm this, read my post above. But on the other side, I'm from Germany, I don't know how reliable ASUS RMA is in your country.

in some cases you can't. i bought from tiger direct and it clearly states that all rma's go directly back to asus for whatever reason. luckily mine is in good shape

The Asus is special. TD has the following restriction on them.
This Product Has Limited Exchange Privileges.
Only defective exchanges for identical item within 30 days of purchase permitted on this product. After 30 days, please contact the manufacturer at: (888) 678-3688.
Since the OP got his in early May he would definitely have an issue returning in the middle of June.

Different retailers = different DOA periods

I was just called by an ASUS support rep to arrange the repair of my tablet, I was more than happy to inform her that another of her colleagues had arranged for it to be replaced under their DOA arrangements with Comet, and that I was perfectly happy with the service.
She was happily blaming her managers for the 10 days delay in contacting me about my RMA issue, so clearly things are a little disorganised there.
Whilst on the phone I was able to find out from her that ASUS have different arrangements with some retailers as to when a device can be considered for DOA replacement.
Comet = 28 Days
PC World = 14 Days
other online retailers = 7 Days
After these periods have passed they will tell you to return for repair. She also said these are from the order date, so I am not sure how that works with back orders/out of stock deliveries that are delayed by weeks.

To make things better once the courier came by to pick it up he didn't actually know where to take it.
I love the Transformer to bits but the hassle of getting it repaired is making me wish I'd gotten an iPad :/

You would've gotten an iPad even though you would lose Flash capability, SD card, keyboard dock w/added battery life and USB ports, etc?
I just can't see the iPad as a viable alternative to the TF. They are for two different types of people, IMO.

They can tell you whatever they like, but that does not affect your statutory rights under the sale of goods act.
Personally, if I'd had an issue with my TF (I didn't) within a month of purchase, it would've gone straight back to Comet for replacement or refund, not repair. Usually, the very mention of the phrases "Sales of Goods Act", and "Statutory Rights" is sufficient to get results.

What are the chances of getting defective units now?

I've read that there are still TF101s with excessive backlight bleeding and the like. Most of the defects don't seem particularly troubling, unlike the problems with the TFPrime.But my question is what are the chances of getting a unit that is quite defective? It's been months now and I'm hoping ASUS has ironed out most of the kinks in their production line...
I have 2 options available to me. Buy on ebay and have it shipped to me or buy locally. The local prices for the 16gb transformer with dock is around $645. But I would be able to see the unit and test it before buying it to check for defects. ebay prices are around $300-$450 and some of those are for the 32gb one. But I won't know what I'll get until it reaches me and it will be too much hassle to return it and wait and get another one that may or may not have the same problem...
Which one do I go for?
Each purchasing method has its pros and cons. Ebay has buyer protection, but of course something could go wrong and you never know when dealing with people and possibly used or refurbished devices. I bought two from Best Buy and they both work great with zero bugs. I then bought the dock on Amazon. This is what I would recommend since you can take it home right away and test it for issues, then take it right back if there are any.
Screen pixels and rooting issues aside I think most problems seem to come in early batches (ugh, ugh, fear the prime!). My B50/B60 tab/dock pair has been pretty good and I haven't seen to many killer issues being posted in a while, as newer batches push out.
Main thing that concerns me with buying online is no idea what point in time the unit was manufactured, especially e.g. on eBay.

im going to guess and say that a B90 is the latest model...that's the one I have. I guess you can ask the eBay seller to give you the model number...its on the box.
they are using hexadecimal for that second numbe after B90 is BA0 then BB0 and so on ive seen a BB0 device already a guy at school has it and i read about one here somewhere.
So which batch numbers do I avoid?
I would say at least <= B30 and idk about B40s.

I just received my 32GB TF101. It's a B60. I know it's the not the latest, but is that batch OK? I remember people saying to avoid B50.
Try buying from a brick and mortar store if you can first, that way you can test the unit for problems. Regardless of free return shipping or yada yada yada, it's still a hassle to have to ship something back to someone that never worked to begin with.

Whats the warranty like from Asus?

So I just discovered a side on my bezel that "clicks" in a little. I didnt notice this before and ive had the tablet for about a week and a half. It doesn't bother me that much but I wonder if it didn't exist or got worse since I've gotten it. I can still exchange it with best buy but I dont really want to seeing as it doesn't bother me and I think I got pretty lucky cause I don't have any other problems with the tablet. So I want to keep it, but the only thing thats worrying me is the possibility of it getting worse.
Say it does get worse. If in 3 months the bezel starts to come off or something, what's Asus's included warranty. Is it a year? And how good is the coverage, will they replace it if I didn't do anything to damage it? Anyone have some experience?

I actually think that their warranty and RMA system is pretty good. The length of the warranty is written on the sticker with the serial number on it. It is the 2 small numbers at the end and should say "12" (meaning 12 months). I RMA'd my TF201 for a broken HDMI port a couple of months ago. I was a little anxious doing this as there were some horror stories on the Prime forum. However, it went really smoothly for me. It took about 10 days door-to-door. The only thing I had to pay for was shipping it to them. My Prime came back repaired and looking just as it did when I first sent it to them. Unfortunately it came back with the bootloader relocked and I was unable to unlock it again ('unknown error' problem) so I sold it on CL and now have a shiny new TF700!

Unfortunately my RMA experience was polar opposite to yours. 2 months without a tablet and NOTHING was fixed, it was returned with broken components exactly as i sent it. Very little communication, horrible customer support, we even got hung up on when we called about it. Overall -1 / 10 for customer service.
I havne't used the Asus RMA service yet (and probably never will), but I *have* read *alot* of horror stories about people getting the device back in worse shape than it was in when they sent it to them.
Plus, Asus makes you pay the shipping, which really blows - if there is a defect that I didn't cause, I should not have to pay to ship it to them to get it fixed.
I love the idea behind the Asus Transformer line of devices, but to be honest, Asus really kinda sucks overall (software QA, hardware QA, tech support and hardware support).
Their QA is simply un-acceptable - folks should *not* have to worry about exchanging a $500 device 5 or 6 times in order to find one that is just "acceptable".
I really can't wait until other vendors start making nice keyboard docks - when that happens, I think I will be saying goodbye to Asus for good. Unfortunately, right now there just isn't much real competition with a good keyboard dock, but they are slowly starting to crop up.

Which repair facility did you send it to and when did you RMA? Reading that thread on the Prime forum it seemed that the facility in Texas that I sent mine to was absolutely clueless to start with. They did seem to improve after a few months after the release of the Prime lol. I think yours might have been one of the horror stories that made me not want to RMA!

I believe happily there is no shipping fee when you RMA in Europe.
Hopefully Lenovo will start with a kick with their tablet+dock bundles, but so far they have worse times between announcing and actually selling than ASUS.

Sent a PC motherboard back to them a few months ago.
I got the same board back repaired after a month (they covered shipping.)
Sent a soundcard back to them last year and got a brand new card back after one week.
12 month limited warranty is not too bad on this tablet.
The registration process on the Asus member site kind of scared me.
Said my S\N was invalid...retyped it 10 or 11 times and it finally flew.

Amazon has been vewy vewy good to me (no sweat on the occasional return.)
So for all my no tax high dollar purchases I will usually run to them (that's if I am able to wait a day or two.)
The other 2 things came from Fry's (carry out) and after 14.999 days your a bit out of luck with them as a retailer.
Don't forget that depending on your credit card you have some protection.

All I can say is that thier RMA experience sucks. I had to send mine in after I bricked it and they not only waited 4 weeks to finally contact me but I contacted them 6 times and finally got to talk to a supervisor and ripped his @$$ for the piss poor customer service. The day after my final call they finally contacted me with the repair cost of $279 to replace the motherboard and labor. We'll have to see how long it takes them to repair it and send it back. Needless to say I'm not buying ASUS products anymore.
I cannot vouch for Asus TF700 warranty, however I did purchase a UL30A from them a couple of year ago. During a flight the corner (hinge) cracked and I sent it in (I paid for outbound shipping). They replaced the plastic casing, but didn't actually replace the hinge and over the next 6 mos the piece came loose and disjointed. Now I have to be very careful when I open or close the lid and I usually keep it open just so I don't stress the joint. I wasn't thrilled with their job.
My TF700 (just started yesterday) has a weird screen click (very faint) when I tab sometimes depending on how hard I tap and where I hold it. If this problem worsens I will probably return it through my credit card (many credit cards extend the return period) and get a new one.

3 reasons why everyone should purchase the infinity from best buy....

I just wanted to share my experience with purchasing the infinity pad from best buy. Below are 3 reasons why you should A) go through best buy and purchase your new infinity or B) return your tablet, if possible, to the store you purchased it from and purchase it again through best buy...
1) As many of you know i along with many others was able to purchase the pad from best buy for a 347.49 due to online price matching. Acquiring a tablet of this calibre for that price alone is probably reason enough.
2) Next reason is their 30 day return policy. Alot of us have had minor QC issues with the infinity. Best buy allows you to return the tablet as many times as you want within 30 days until you get one that is "perfect". This is much easier then doing an rma or online exchange. I dont know about you, but i would get frustrated having to mail back my tab, receive a new one, find out it also has a defect and do the return all over again. With best buy its extremely convenient with most stores allowing you to open the tab in the store to check if its to your liking.
3) [MOST IMPORTANT] Insurance policy! By purchasing their insurance for $99.00, you get complete accident and in store replacement for a year. However that's not the best part. Remember best buy typically removes older products from their shelves and store inventory to make room for newer products from the same manufacturer. We all know asus will eventually come out with a newer tablet within the next year, which means instead of replacing our infinities with another tf700, they will replace it instead with the newer tablet from asus. Once you get the new one, just buy the 1 year insurance and the cycle continues!
I honestly cant see any reason why to not go through them from now on... Not only will you get the same price as the online retailers, but also once you get the insurance you've basically paid for the next version of your tablet.

I purchased the Transformer Prime from them.
7 months later I returned it in for full credit refund honoring the 1 year manufacture warranty due to defects of the Wifi/GPS.
Got a Infinity out of that. :cyclops:

Nice! Problem is that there arent any real manufacture defects on the infinity. At least nothing made public by asus. So it would be really hard to honor that now. You would have to make a real case to best buy in order try that on the infinity. By doing the 1 year you wouldnt have to worry. Just say you have a "defect" and your good to go.

Think it mat be a bit early to say that. There are certainly i/o issues which is most likely a hardware defect. How about all the screen separation issues?
I agree about buying at Best Buy. I buy most larger electronic device there. I had them return 2 Prime's and a dock with little more than an email and phone call. I pre ordered one and ordered the second for my son Christmas eve. I did not have their extended warranty.
I use SquareTrade warranties for electronics They are about 1/2 the cost and their service is excellent. I got 2 years plus accidental damage for 87 after a 30% discount. A much better deal than BB IMHO.
Yup,as long as asus doesnt admit on any defect there is a slim chance of getting a free upgrade and the infinity has to be discontinued like the prime. For insrance its cheaper to buy it at squaretrade 2yrs with adh and using a 30% discount its only $69.99

The problem with squaretrade to me is convenience. With best buy, although it might be more expensive, you can literally walk in and out with a new tablet without having to wait. Also, with squaretrade you would never be able to get a newer version of the product you ordered. They would either send you a refurbished model, or prorate the amount of what it would cost to buy the product currently. So if you buy an infinity and 2 years later try to use your warranty, they will either send you a refurb or give you the prorated amount to purchase that tablet at a local vendor.
The purpose of buying the insurance from best buy is to eventually purchase the newer version of the tablet. If you don't want to get the newer version then squaretrade is a great deal. I for one want to be able to get the tfXXX when ever it arrives. Or at least have the option of using my warranty for that purpose.

are you sure it works like that ? so for example iphone 3 owners buy the warrenty and the next year they can get an iphone 4 then the 4s and now the 5 ? hm. should look into this more . also asus is going to focus on their windows hybrids for a while now before going back to making an android tab. the fine line between tab and dock and full OS + keyboard is getting cut soon thats what worries me that i bought into a "phase of technology" and soon its gonna be all about touchscreen detachable laptops

I doubt that will happen. Look at the prime, its shelf life was about 7-8months because of the defect in design which Asus has openly mentioned. So far Asus hasnt openly admitted on anything wrong with the infinity and it may look that after your year is up the shelf life will probably be longer than your warranty. So your option to upgrade will probably be not available if there are infinities to order, look at the TF101 its still available for sale at best buy. All you can do is keep your fingers cross and Asus can admit a defect on the inifinity and not last a full year on the shelf. But Best buy is a good place for quick exchanges and return window.. thats where i got my note 10.1 and I have 60 days to play with it, well maybe 40+ days now.. if I ever wanna go back to the infinity or incase a better tablet gets released before my 60 days.

Exactly, as long as best buy has discontinued selling that iphone 3 then you get the comparable product. As for buying into a phase, i highly doubt it. Asus has a massive deal with google, so i highly doubt they will be "refocusing" on windows products this early, especially with android outpacing nearly everyone. Asus will be making android tabs and phones for years to come.

Actually all the best buys in my area have discontinued both the prime and tf101. Best buy stocks the budget and premium tabs for each company. Since the tf300 is considered to be the "budget" tablet, there was no need to keep the tf101 or prime with the infinity. Also it doesnt matter if asus admits a defect. If you get the best buy insurance and say your tab is broken, they have to replace it with a comparable product. If the infinity is no longer sold ( which it wont be a year from now in BEST BUY) then they will replace it with the next asus transformer tablet available.

Have you ever heard of something called fraud or, at the very least, being dishonest?? I'm sorry, but claiming there is a defect (when there really isn't one) just to "get the newer model" a year or two later is simply not right and probably considered fraud. This is the one of the reasons that Best Buy will be going out of business soon - because of acts like this. Enjoy "cheating" the system while you can because like I said, it's acts like this that will put Best Buy out of business.
Besides, I find it very hard to believe that you can just walk in a year later and simply say that the tablet is defective and they will just gladly hand you a brand new model. The TF201 was a very unique circumstance where the manufacturer basically admitted that the product was faulty. Even if it were not considered fraud (which I believe it is), I think that they would at least want to see the defect before handing you a brand new model.

Lol well im sorry if you feel "morally" wrong about doing something like this but honestly i really dont care. I'm here to show that you can get a great deal from best buy. Also it was one of the managers that told me about the deal since im a frequent customer. Once you return the tablet, they will end up reselling it since they will find it is not "defected" ( say you are having power fluctuations with the battery, its something they cant test in the store and have to take your word on it since you already purchased insurance from them) and make a profit on it. On top of that, you are paying the $99 for the insurance. SO its not an actual complete loss for the company.
Best buy wont be going out of business because of people like me, they will be going out of business because they are amazons show room and people are slowly moving towards online retailers to purchase products for cheaper prices. At least with me they are getting something out of it. If you dont like this Jtrosky, then simply ignore the thread and move along. To everyone else who cant afford the latest and greatest from asus every year, I think this is great deal!

We all know asus will eventually come out with a newer tablet within the next year, which means instead of replacing our infinities with another tf700, they will replace it instead with the newer tablet from asus. Once you get the new one, just buy the 1 year insurance and the cycle continues!
I honestly cant see any reason why to not go through them from now on... Not only will you get the same price as the online retailers, but also once you get the insurance you've basically paid for the next version of your tablet.

Where did you find it for 347.49? I can't find one for less than 499. I just got my Infinity by returning my Prime to Best Buy for an exchange. Is the price match only for online purchases?

Those are links for two sites sitting on servers in Russia in post 34.
Absolutely no real details about purchases, contacting, ordering and 2.99 shipping (yeah right.)
Did anyone actually read the return\exchange policy on Best Buys website?
The policy reads they won't match competing on-line prices.
They will match local competing prices from another store within 25 miles.
Best Buy will probably let a few get away with a relaxed policy for a while.
Then after things pick up for them they'll tighten up like Fry's and Amazon have done.
A lot of retailers offer 1-2-3 year no questions asked warranties for $$$.
Those are designed to suck money from your pocket out of fear.
I don't think hordes of tablet buyers are going to gain anything here.
IMO it's you against corporate retail...there's only one winner there.

Ok you are seriously really late. Myself along with plenty of others have done the price match. If you continue reading on the post the guy even posted his receipt as proof. If you need more proof ( and judging from your flame first attitude you probably will) i will post a copy of my receipt as well. Doesn't matter what their policy says, that's what they priced match.
Also they definitely changed that rule because every best buy in my area will price match amazon and online retailers.

I have also read countless posts where Best Buy would *not* price match an on-line store - just because it a few managers let it slip buy doesn't change the fact that the policy is very clear about this - ask the folks that were denied....
And on the "lie" to Best Buy in order to cheat them - the problem is that it affects *everyone* when you do such childish things. People like you are the exact reason why places like Office Depot won't even let you return open electronics *at all* - you can only exchange items for the exact same item, period. So, again, you are hurting *everyone* when you do this crap.
If you want to do it fine, but don't go encouraging others to do it - that's my point - I'm sure I could report this thread and get it closed for that very reason - you are encouraging others to do illegal things. I'm not the "reporting" type though, so I'd rather let everyone know why this is a problem and why they shouldn't do it. If you can't afford to support your "electronic habit" that doesn't give you the right to purposely cheat retail stores, regardless of who told you to do it.
It's wrong and quite frankly, it's illegal - period. Nothing is free in life - like I said, you are just hurting every other consumer (as well as Best Buy) when you do this crap.
