Internal memory vs SD card on Lollipop - General Questions and Answers

So I'm thinking about buying the Moto X Style/Pure Edition, but I'm coming from a 64 GB OPO, so 16 GB isn't really going to cut it. To be economical I'm thinking about getting the 16 GB variant and adding an SD card. I haven't used an SD card with Android for years though, and I know a lot has changed. Performance-wise is an SD card going to be significantly worse than internal memory, and am I likely to run into lots of instances where apps won't let me install to the SD card? I install a lot of apps and also use a good amount of storage space for Google Play Music downloads.

I would say it depends on what you used that 64GB for. If you have a lot of big apps, 16GB isn't going to cut it. Even if you have a few, it'll be tight. If you keep movies or TV shows or a big music library on there, an SD card will do fine.
This of course will change in Android M which merges SD and internal memory. I still wouldn't recommend less than 32GB internal if you're coming from a 64. SD memory is inherently slower than internal, so just bear that in mind when you consider what you need the memory for. It'll playback a movie fine, but if you're putting apps on there it'll slowdown somewhat.

Gotcha, that was pretty much what I figured but wanted to clarify. Thanks!

[Q] Sensation's Memory Card

Due to me saving for a car plus some games i've pre-order at gamestop, my cash is kinda tight right now.so im wondering is there some way that i can delete some things of the memory card or move some things to the internal memory. i have a lot of tmobile bloatware backup and im wondering do i need to flash a new rom just to relieve some of it's memory.

[Q] 64Gb Mobile Ultra SD Micro . . Any Thoughts??

I am looking to replace the 16Gb SD Micro SD Card I use in my Sensation given that I have a sudden need for MUCH more storage space now I have switched over to FLAC format music and 1080p movies to take advantage of the extra quality.
I'm curious though, has anyone tried the new SanDisk Mobile Ultra 64Gb SD Micro Card yet? I've been searching for a few days and I have read all sorts of conflicting reports of people saying they do/do not work can read some/all of the available space and even those who say they work till you've used over 32Gb then become unreliable....
I have found a very reasonably priced site but it is still quite a price if it does not work...
I tend to use my phone mainly for listening to music and watching the occasional video on the move and to be honest my class 4 16Gb card seems to run quick enough but just does not have the space I need. Am I really going to see much improvement from a higher class of card with this?
Does anyone have any advice to help?
Yes, I'm sure some have.

missing memory

Hi guys. Just wondering got galaxy s3 and my available memory is 11,35 gb on 16gb model. I do understand that system need some space itself but can that be over 4gb or is it just faulty memory?
That is normal. Mine was the same size.
That is how much usable memory you get. Kinda a rip off IMO. If you need more memory you could always get a 32 or 64gb microsd card and try the Sd card mod to make the phone think its the internal memory.
Agree with everyone else. That's the norm for storage devices, there's always a sizable amount of space taken up by the system/OS of the device you are looking at.

Well first you gotta take into account it's not a full 16gb to begin with... NO harddrive/flash memory or anything is ever fully true to the number on the box. It's always off. Then the system takes 4-5gb worth of space too.
With magnetic storage it wad always a random amount, due to many factors. I remember in the early 90's it was like a lottery drawing to see how much space you actually got - and you're talking about full-size hard drives measured in megabytes for hundreds of dollars.
At least with flash memory it's a pretty consistent amount of space used for the memory to use itself, the real subjective number anymore is how much space the OS takes up.

Jiayu G3T

Hello,
I will probably buy this phone: http://www.chinaphonereview.com/jiayu-g3t. I have a question. I read that this phone has 4gb rom, but no internal storage for new apps, downloaded from store and other websites, and so on. Is this true?
Don't buy a chinese phone,
it might have bad system software, there might be lies, you get no support and 4GB is very very low, trust me. You'll get like 2-3GB usable space and that's very small.

My friend has Jiayu phone and it is very good. But what do you think about the internal storage?
If you want to play games or install a couple of apps 4GB is pretty low. You can put an SDcard in there but still 4GB isn't very good. MediaTek is not a great CPU either
The app storage is actually 2,5GB. Bigger apps install to sd card by default and smaller ones can be moved from settings/apps. I have all needed apps and about 4 hd games installes and still have about 1,6GB free. If you are the kind of person that installs 100+ big apps, maybe the 2,5gb could become a problem, otherwise you're ok. Oh, there's no media partition(most 4GB rom phones have only 1gb for apps) so a sd card is a must(can't even take pictures without it).
Decent phone, no lag, good camera, great screen, GPS wotks very well, GREAT battery life(for my normal usage, I get 5-7days with one charge). I suspect it should hold for 2 days even if you are a HEAVY user. The front is vey interesting, but the back is uninspiring(not ugly, just not on par with the front). No USB OTG, a bit heavy and large for a 4.5 inch screen(3000mAh battery...). Speaker(ringtones) and microphone are a bit weaker than my previous phone(Alcatel X'Pop), but they work ok.
All in all, a very decent dual-sim for the price. I love it.

Do Micro SD cards slow down overall/general phone performance?

Hello!
I just had a few questions regarding Micro SD cards and I wanted to get some of your opinions on the matter.
I work in the mobile phone industry. My coworker and I were discussing (maybe a bit of arguing) the inclusion of the SD card slot inside the Galaxy S7 and whether it's a good idea. He's under the very passionate impression that Samsung made a huge mistake incuding the slot in the S7, which is very contrary to my opinion.
His reasoning is that having an SD card in your phone decreases general speed/performance and that it's an obsolete feature. I've never had an issue with SD cards in my experience. I can perhaps imagine that the class of SD card may make a slight difference. I know transfer speeds vary but I don't agree that it slows the phone down during normal processes.
Do you think the SD card or just memory cards in general will eventually become a thing of the past or do you think that expandable storage will always be a viable option at least in the forseeable future?
Sorry, I posted this in the wrong section. Feel free to delete.
