[Q] S6 High RAM Usage and Heating Issue - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I recently upgraded to S6 from an iPhone 5. S6 is a great phone however, it gets hot very easily(for example while taking a photo or having 4-5 app opened in background) and free RAM was always below 700 MB without any app opened. I disabled nearly every bloat app and replaced TouchWiz with Nova and amount of free RAM is about 1.1 GB when there is no app in background. But it still gets hot and battery drains quickly during this time. Also my gaming performance is worse than my previous phone, iPhone 5( MCPE never lagged in my iPhone, but its significantly slower on S6). I checked other threads about that issue here but only solution is resetting to factory settings. Will that work? Thanks all.

you have to wait for 5.1.1 update(should come now in June if you trust the leaks)..and Sammy needs to step up there game with the RAM usage!

Do you auto-back up your photos? If you have that setting on, whether Drop Box or Google, change it to "on wifi only" and your battery drain will disappear. The worst offender from my experience for battery drain is when auto backup is on and your data connection is spotty. Drains it faster than anything I've ever seen on Android.

Thanks for answers. No ingenious247 I don't auto-back up my photos. Also I don't even keep my Cellular Data on. I hope 5.1 update fixes this.

[Q] Ram management issue on the s6 causes lag?

Hey guys I am sorry if this question is asked again, but does the ram management issue on the s6 cause lag in day to day usage or it just deters the multitasking performance? Gonna buy the s6 tomorrow, and Im damn excited

It will mean if you use the back key to come out of apps, sometimes they will reload, such as phone and messaging etc, but only usually games will be closed regularly and aggressively. General lag isn't a problem, just a slight delay loading aps back into memory once they've closed.
I find if I back out of apps using the home key this problem is reduced.

How about scrolling through apps such as chrome ,Facebook ,play store. Does this issue cause any lag?
I've never really experience any huge lag. I turn off my device once in 2 days so maybe that helps.

90% of users won't even notice the memory management "issue". Only hardcore multitaskers will. The "issue" is the S6 kicks apps out of cache very quickly so whenever you tap the multitask button, the app relaunches/redraws instead of resuming from a hibernated state. There is a little lag (~0.5 second), but it is not a dealbreaker that would prevent you from enjoying the phone.

Chrome lags on every device I have owned, including the S6. Any app that uses Android WebView will lag.
I don't use facebook, so I can't speak for that app.
No Play store lag on my S6.

Really, I did'nt notice the problem with multitasking (because the S6 is so fast) before I read about it here.
Also, all the **** you hear about the battery life is not true. Of course, it's not the best out there (only 2550mah, so of course not) but it easily get you through the day (normal usage) and at least into another. The battery have gotten way better with a few updates (it was damn bad at the start) and might get even better when 5.1 hits in a few weeks.
Just turn of basic stuff, that noone uses anyway (almost) like, location history, wifi always scanning and such.

Glad to hear that, by the way 5.1 just came out recently and its showing mixed reactions among the users. Some people says that the battery life has improved a lot after the update and some just says its the same.

No, it's not out yet. At least not for the international version. Some users think, that the reason only one carrier got it yet, is because it is a "test" version. Not sure tho.
But well, as said, only out for one carrier for over a week now.

Yeah the battery life is overblown. It is no worse than any other phone with <2500 mAh battery. Anyone coming from a 3000+ mAh battery will be disappointed, but anyone that is used to plugging in every day won't know any different.
If you are rooted, I also recommend App Ops to manage permissions and save more battery :good:
Check Force gpu rendering and no lag. As far as it regards multitasking it sucks.

Any S6 user happy with their phone?

Hi guys, I'm going straight to the point: are you happy with your phone (in general, I know every phone has some minor annoyances)? I keep reading on the internet people that keep on lamenting about it (bad battery, laggy, awful RAM management, ect.), that's why I've opened this thread. I don't have the phone and I plan on buying it (it or the s6 edge or edge+, still have to decide - unfortunately the note 5 isn't coming to Europe anytime soon -), but all the reports are making me scared of buying it.
I'm happy with it. But you enjoy it more with root. Custom kernel fixes the ram issue, keeps the system speedy, custom roms add more features and debtor for better performance and ram management. So I'm basically enjoying it because of root

Like osmosizzz above I can say that I am very happy with this phone. Once you root it and remove the bloatware this thing flies. Using a custom ROM and kernel I have better battery life, endless customization options and a speedy UI experience.

I'd like not to have to root, I'm just tired of it (coming from a nexus 4), but I guess I might consider it if I buy the S6
You really dont have to have root as the phone is still plenty fast and with each update that comes out they are improving the software of the phone.
It's the best phone I ever had, my only gripes are aggressive memory management and the placement of the speaker (I usually end up covering it when holding it ), lag and battery are a lot better since the 2nd 511 update, the first update from 501 was rather laggy
I have 2 of this phone. here are my opinions:
1st phone (rooted and on XstrestoLite ROM)
I have great battery life, responses and everything seems fine except for the current bug with BOGG firmwares, which resulted in the keyboard lag when coming for lockscreen (Keyboard open delay about 3-6 seconds) check out my battery life here and here
2nd phone (stock and not rooted ever)
I find that the battery life on this phone not as great as my 1st phone, but however, everything is pretty smooth and great to me. But for a short time i had problems with GPS not being able to lock properly on Waze and Google Maps, however, not sure what happened (i didn't update the phone or anything) but it was back to normal again. and never happened again ever since.
Verdict: i love both my phones, i'll have them only until the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes out.
I owned this phone for over 4 months now. It never lag and blazing fast, the fastest android phone I've ever seen and the most amazing design I've ever seen too. It is just how the poor memory management kills apps at the background when you doing heavy multi-tasking, I've heard the 2nd 5.1.1 OTA fixed it. If multi-tasking is your concern, you should consider S6 Edge Plus comes with 4GB ram.
The battery performance is above average, imagine when you got this ultra smooth speed plus 2K screen and with only a 2550mAh capacity, I'll say it has done the job pretty well on battery life and enough to use a full day for any light to medium usage user. Heavy user will need a 2nd charge but it supports QC2.0(just get a QC2.0 powerbank) or wireless charging.

External storage can be overcome easily with this cute staff.
Since I'm a one-hand lover and the S6 size is the max. acceptable limit to me. I'm thinking to swap to Sony Z5 Compact later but that's s810 cpu overheating issue scared me away, I may just stick with S6 until S8 out, still not decided yet atm.
Its pretty good, but the RAM management and the occasional battery freakout (background drain) are irritating. If 5.1.1 fixes these 2 issues, I'm gold.
Before anyone tells me I can custom, its a work phone, I need full stock unrooted/knox intact otherwise I can't hook into my work's MDM systems (yes, its really nazi security).
But even without root, debloating via package disabler pro/debloater makes a noticeable difference to battery, which is a poor indictment of Samsung (6th generation Galaxy and still not learnt their lesson?).
The camera is out of this world and you get REALLY used to having a reliable fingerprint reader, I just rest my thumb stupidly on the home button on other people's phones (and if there isn't a physical home button I just stare stupidly at the screen for ~2 seconds lol).
I've never actually used the 'swap battery' feature so don't miss it, work phone so I got the storage bumped but if I paid for it myself I'd probably be irritated at the cost
One happy user here.
Battery life, my only gripe. Otherwise a perfect phone for me. Won't be rooting, just changed the launcher (Nova prime) and Skinomi case. Happy S6 user here!
apart from the camera I don't like any thing about this phone.
Best phone i,ve ever had, fantastic camera/screen/battery lasts me a full day no problems at all
Unhappy user here; bad battery life, laggy software, agressive memory resulting to bad multi tasking; will definitely change the phone.

I'm quite pleased with it, and I didn't even root mine. I'm especially impressed with the GearVR.
Count me with the happy owners!
I will root soon anyway to get more flexibility and customization.
Since updating to the EVR firmware (for network specific settings) I love it, super fast and great performance even with intensive games. My one issue is battery life; although it lasts the day with ordinary use it does drain after a while of continuous use, but then again with fast charging I just plug it in for a few minutes and all is good.
Is there any fix for the memory management?

Only thing I dislike about this phone is the battery, but as other have said. Root->custom rom + kernel (and MAYBE soon Xposed) and this phone is at least average in battery life.
If you don't root (and is a power user, the phone is not for you). With root + custom rom + few tweaks I can go around 3-6 hours SOT on data (depending on brightness) and 6+ on wifi. Without I barely hit 3.
Phones like the Xperia Z3 compact can hit 6 hours SOT without root. So yeah, if rooting this phone is great, if not it sucks from a power user perspective.

S8+ 955FD lags

My 6 months old 955FD with Exynos CPU started to lag very badly especially in Pokemon go. I'm taking about not able to toss a pokeball properly. I have already used game tuner to cut the gaming resolution to 50% but to no avail. The lags are more noticeable during day time and smooth during night time. I've noticed similar pattern with my Note 5 (Exynos too). Can't believe a 6 months old phone will behave as such. Anyone having similar issues?
None of the lags are noticed on my iPhone 7+.
ofc there will be no lag on iPhone since their ram management is on point
Samsung phones have bad ram management system and it bugs the hell out while doing heavy tasks
check if u have any unnecessary apps running in background

Check for apps /services running in background. Under Development Tools
Uninstall /Disable what you don't need.
Install Greenify and hibernate apps at screen off that you don't need running in background.
This solved my lag and battery lif3 issue after upgrading to Oreo.
I just got another Samsung fw update 2 days ago fixing performance and specifically battery life issue by reducing running background processes.
I am on CRD1 stock rom now

Question Pixel 6a - Question

Is anyone else noticing bad ram management? I know it is 6gb but something feels off. I can only keep like 3 maybe 5 apps in the background. Any suggestions 10.0.0.0.1 192.168.1.254?
Yeah, I also noticed this, when I switch to maybe 3rd recent app it has to re-load the app. This did not occur in my pixel 4.
frustrating. Especially when only switching between a couple apps. Moreso that there's plenty of RAM free when this happens. Not sure what Android takes into consideration when closing apps out. Could be the app itself decides to close out after certain amount of inactivity. I notice it with Chrome often.
I've noticed the 6a seems to keep a lot more memory open than my 4a did (both have 6gb). I run the same 'family' of apps, background and foreground, as before on my 4a except I seem to keep ~2gb free on the 6a vs. ~1gb free on the 4a. That's hardly a scientific evaluation ofc. Esp. with android's 'free mem = wasted potential/speed' PoV. It's still a new-ish phone...I'm sure google has some tuning to after it has a chance to 'analyze the analytics'...or whatever, lol.
I am noticing the opposite. In fact, my phone gets really hot for no good reason. And whatever it is, it isn't reporting the usage in the battery drain report.

Not sure if you're using hotspot, that causes a large amount of drain and heat. Also my VPN was using a lot of battery.

Question S22 Ultra exynos 128gb very slow.

Hi,
I though perhaps an app was causing this issue but I can't seem to pin down an app that might have been.
I believe this *may* have been since the One UI5 update, but my phone is extremely unreliable now, it's so slow, laggy, battery life drains quicker, apps killing them selves, all around it's a bit like a battlefield using my phone.
It's 8:53, so far since my phone was off charges 2hr 5mins ago, I'm down the 84% battery and Facebook has taken 42, Google Play 0.5 and O2 Priority 0.2 , on average MS Edge takes 4.1%, Google Play 43.6% and Facebook 2.8%
Not sure if those figures are unusual?
Any ideas what could be causing this or if it's a known bug? cheers.
Install gsam battery monitor and enable grand permission according to the instructions in the application. Then wait a few hours and analyze the graphs and detailed battery consumption data by apk and services.
Seems like I need route to distinguish individual apps
This is a simple check that could tell you something.
Code:
$ top
Do you have a lot of stuff stored in that 128GB?
Probably not related but another device had some serious thrashing trying to list large directories.
The implementation of sdcard has changed a number of times.
(On another device I just made sdcard a straight mount. End of problem.)
Weird even he has many things stored...dont forget that this phone has like Exynos 2200 Octo-Core 2.9 GHz 8GB of ram...
did u tryed to factory reset???
u did something that could cause your phone slow?
I've got 100 out of 128gb free and it's got 8gb ram
