I know... It's been asked before but humor me... Please. - Note Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all!
I realize that requests like this have been made I imagine but I just want to know if I should have any hope in being able to put a custom ROM on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note Edge the N915V non development edition.
I am curious if it is being worked on or if everyone has given up?
I just miss having the choice to decide what ROM to use while I love this particular phone hardware wise and features.
If anyone is working hard on this let me know I would be happy to donate to the cause so we can get the ability to root and unlock the bootloader on these dang phones!
Thanks all! I appreciate your allowing me to post this "plea". I have used custom ROMs forever now and wow do I miss the power!

The answer is yes, they are working on it, it's just taking more time to access root due to the locked bootloader. The Verizon note 4 is virtually the same as the note edge as far as firmware goes, if you would like to donate, check out the Note 4 forums for Verizon.

short answer is yes...
The long answer involves a young priest and an old priest... (joke from movie no hard feelings) but seriously don't hold your breath. It is being worked on but it isn't a simple task.
As for unlocking the bootloaders don't count on it. You will most likely see something similar to safestrap on theae devices once root is actually obtained.
I'm glad to hear there are some people still holding out I have a lot of love for this device. I hope that support starts flowing in despite the lack of advertising on samsungs part for this device. Looking forward to the note edge 2! (Dev edition of corse lol)

[Thanks]Are we (Cappy users) spoiled?

This is more of a way to say thanks to all the Dev's and users who populate this forum. If you really compare to the various sub-sections (phones) you really just are underwhelmed by a lack of ROM's. And the Captivate development section is full of great quality ROM's. You almost have an overload of ROM's to flash, so many good ones. And also the great i9000 dev's. They did a ton of work to help get us some great ROM's
Here is just a thanks. Keep up the good work
Say thanks to your dev's in the thread below
i agree. definately not good for anyone with a flashing addiction . lol i'm downloading two new roms as i type. thanks dev team for finishing what att/samsung didnt.
agreed
awesome work, Devs
Part of the thanks goes to Samsung for making it easy
That's also why I'll never buy HTC or Motorola as long as they're in the habit of locking bootloaders.
I was considering one of the newer devices but the development sections are non existent. Yes were are spoiled, I agree, thanks to our devs.

Necessity breeds invention.
I feel sorry for the people who use stock phones and think that's as good as it gets. Those poor, clueless people.
Thank you, XDA.
Try going to the forums of most other AT&T Android phones, such as the Motorola Bravo, and you'll be shocked that almost 6 months after release, they don't have a single custom ROM, and rooting is still a pain for them!
As for us, we have a ton of amazing devs cranking out awesome ROMs, lagfixes, kernels, themes, etc., so I could never imagine going back to stock again
Mucho Gracias Devs
+100000 to what has been said already. I've learned and gained so much from this forum. I have a real love affair with my cappy! I'm up for an upgrade as we speak, but I can' t imagine a better phone. This is thanks to XDA and the awesomely talented hard working devs on this this forum. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
*Now if I can only get the stupendous battery life others have mentioned, I'd be in heaven*

Agree wholeheartedly!! I would never go back to stock, and I am supremely thankful to all of the devs and users out there that have provided custom roms, kernels, and all of the other goodies available. The biggest thing I am thankful for, though, is all of the information the users and devs provide. I have learned so much about my cappy, and android in general, from this forum. IMHO, the best way to show thanks is to keep up the spirit of sharing, and provide your own insight anywhere it may be useful. I am always happy to help anyone out, as long as it is a question I know something about. Again, a big thanks to all of the devs, and to all of the users!!

I can definitely say that the Captivate Development is one of the best on XDA.
My brother is looking for a new device to upgrade to, he keeps comparing everything to my Captivate. He still hasn't found anything that he would rather have over the Captivate, mostly because of the support available on XDA.

Love the captivate, but it wouldn't be anything withput the captivate android development section
I am so surprised every time I try to check on ROMs for other phones.
I am scared about leaving the captivate, I don't want to be stuck on stock. I was going to go to atrix next, that isn't looking good. Hopefully the SGS II is as easy to dev as the captivate, and hopefully its out soon.
We are so very spoiled. The hardest thing about flashing a ROM for a captivate is choosing which one.
Thanks to all the great devs that make this possible.

One thing that I think is crazy is that the necessity for a lagfix created something unexpected and amazing in the Voodoo Project (ext4 optimizations, sound, and color), mad props to Supercurio. Not trying to single any dev out, y'all are great and continue to produce amazing ROM's.
I'm glad my phone didn't work as promised right out of the box. I feel sorry for anyone that decided to move on to another phone for that reason. The developers in this section are awesome there are easily 15 solid roms and 10 different kernels to choose from. Sometimes navigating the choices can give a guy a head ache, but Thanks to all the hard working devs in the captivate XDA it's almost impossible to make a bad choice. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I agree with everyone. I bought my SGH-I897 because a friend bought one for his wife and she loved it (even with stock ROM) and got it free on Black Friday. I came from iPhone original to this and was only marginally satisfied... until the custom ROM I installed a few days ago. Wow, what a difference. The hardware that promised so much is now free to work as it should. Better battery life, smoother performance, more options, more access.
Like others, I feel sorry for those who at one time held this device in their hands then gave it up because of terrible software.
Thanks to all those who take the time to develop, update, write guides, share findings, take risks... for the benefit of fellow Captivate owners. Thanks.
100% agreed.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all developers here in XDA. I officially salute to all of them. They help us without asking payback. I definitely think donation is my way to show how I appreciate their work, time and their unselfishness of sharing.
And also want to thank all memebers here on XDA. They are extremely helpful as well.
Being winmo rom flasher/users for 5 years. As android is totally new to me. After been reading lots of lots of topics, I just recently had guts to flash a custom android rom. And all I can say is wow. Didn't expected a big different like that.
Again, thanks all ppl here in XDA. I know I'm spoiled, and protected too, as long as I am a member of XDA community.

Future of S4 development

Alright guys so we have been graced with the official KitKat from Sammy depending on what carrier you're on... I'm finally able to get a taste of 4.4.2 on this fantastic piece of hardware...
But that's all this phone has going for it is hardware at this point, and even that's been outdated already in this fast moving tech world.
My AT&T branded S4 (19505) is stuck.. maybe we will get root here for the 4.4.2 build... when that happens know one knows.
But all of us sitting here on XDA are all the same.. we all want to modify our devices and push them to their limits.
I know I would love to get some AOSP love on this phone and experience what the phone can do without all the bloatware bogging it down.. and that awful touchwiz interface.. but we all have the same problem. No one has found a way to get a custom recovery on our phones. While there are a fair number of lucky people who got this phone as it came out and were able to unlock their bootloaders and flash a custom recovery image, I know there are plenty more of us who are not as fortunate as them.
Where do we go?
Who do we turn to?
Samsung? They wont help, in fact, it seems they are hell bent on incorporating more and more obKNOXious security measures as to prevent us from accessing our bootloaders!
Online petitions? So far they haven't done much!
The XDA community here on XDA? Well unfortunately most people truly interested in rooting their phones and pushing them to the limits discarded their S4s long ago for a Nexus or other phone..
So this leaves us with what? Who do we turn to who has both the knowledge base to do something with our phones as well as the desire to put their time into such a project.
I suppose this thread will be deleted.. but I just had to rant I suppose.. I am sitting here without any way to unlock my phone and do what I wish to do with it, and that's due to many factors.. but I'm so tired of opening my browser to our ATT forums and seeing that no one has created a new post, or two people have made comments on posts already existing... is this just s forgotten phone in the sea of tech gadgets out? Are we up a river without a paddle?
Is there no hope for us?
Now I know that this forum is a community and I am 100% behind the notion that if you want something done then you should do it yourself.. but I like most still using this phone don't have the know how to do what needs to be done here. I'm sure there are plenty of people like me who wish that they could help and will do anything in their power to help get something going for this device. What do we do???
/rant /patheticpleaforsomeonetohelpus
No sense.
You can install custom recovery
You can root
You can install custom ROM

CVE-2014-0973: Possible Bootloader Unlock?

A new CVE was found yesterday pertaining to the Little Kernel bootloader, which is closely related to the Samsung bootloader. This CVE would allow us to load our own images and possibly unlock the bootloader permanently. There is a patch for it; however, first looks suggest that the S5 bootloader may not be patched if it is exploitable. The link below explains the CVE and includes the link for the patch.
https://www.codeaurora.org/projects...arsing-during-boot-image-authentication-leads
Feel free to discuss this. However, please follow the forum rules, and only discuss bootloader subjects on this thread.

If this is something that's confirmed from another Dev would be awesome if they or @geohot can exploit this as well, and I would be willing to pay more money towards this for an unlocked BL.

No need for that yet, as this isn't confirmed if it's related to us.
Little side note,.....You know its funny how the community works. On one had, 2 months ago we had one of the most secured phones on the market. Then we had a community up in arms about not having root bootloader unlock etc etc. Not so much up in arms maybe but upset root didn't come as quick as it did. Fast forward 1 month, people learning to live without root, people giving up all hope and dumping the device, people getting further frustrated, and many people looking into any exploit found to see if it can be done for us. And then another month later we get root and everything that happened before hand is gone....people learnign to live without it - rooted, people who gave up - rooted, those who were frustrated - rooted and can finally sleep at night.
Now something like this comes up.....
It sounds like it may work just based on the CVE description, but im not sure how much it pertains to the S5. I'm happy with root and man if this worked the flood gates will truly open.
Wow the community has picked up alotttttt since root has been obtained. I can only imagine the potential this phone has with a cm based rom *starts to drool at the thought* and to think I was one of those who was about to ditch the s5 and switch to the m8. I sincerely thank every developer putting effort into making this dream a reality. If it weren't so hard for me to find a job right now I would be donating like crazy to everybody involved.
Idk if starting a bounty for everything: root, safestrap, and bootloader is really a good idea. I mean I get it for some stuff like root, obviously that was needed but do you guys really want to have to buy every single mod? maybe we should cool our heels a bit enjoy root and see what comes our way before we start opening up our wallets, you can always donate after the fact.

Never thought we'd need a bounty, just as you said to donate to whoever could find the exploit for an unlocked BL. SS would be next no matter what, with rumors he's currently looking into it for us, but what we really need is a dev to see this and see if this is anything special, or like with the bounty thread, just a bunch of nothing. I will agree with you here, for once

I agree. I'm happy that geohot got the bounty(and a thousand thanks to the man!!!), but let's not jump the gun on this one. I'm no dev so I have no idea on this, but I think that the past 2 months shows that if we're just patient then it will come. The bounty pages are a huge hassle for moderators and the whole concept is a little iffy if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I pledged and will be donating on Friday. But I think if we are just patient and donate to the devs like we should be anyway, everything will work out. This phone is too popular not to get devs working on it.
Again, a million thanks to all the devs that have made my tinkering dreams come true(a full computer to tinker with any time in my pocket... priceless). If I'm out of line here, then just ignore me. But I can't wait to see if this exploit pans out!!!

I agree. I don't want to start another bounty. If people want to donate to whoever figures it out, if it is figured out, then that's awesome. They support the devs who put a lot of time into this kind of stuff. But a bounty shouldn't be one of the first things started for unlocking/rooting a phone.

probably the quickest path to croms would be chain-loading instead of dicking around unlocking the boot-loader and risking a hardbrick
also can we not discuss easily patched exploits on the public boards ... come on people this is how stuff gets patched

Well with root (as long as the SDM apk is removed) we don't have to worry about Samsung/VZW forcing a patch on us.. so this isn't that big of a problem anymore. :good:

Even if Samsung has their own source tree for lk/aboot, it's wouldn't be surprising that (a) they already know about this and (b) they might have patched it already in their own sources. The real question is if it's patched in the binary that's on the phone.. and the way to figure that out is to disassemble the code knowing what you're looking for. And no, I do not care to do this.. I'm not qualified to.. because I know people will ask
it really doesn't matter what the bootloader is the kernel as far as I know doesn't have a signature check enforced even if it does you could write a chain--loader to get around it then its just a matter of
stock bootloader > stock kernel > our kernel > our rom
of course writing the code and making the necessary modifications to /system and /data are complicated at best foolhardy at worst

eager newb seeking experienced android development veteran to learn from

hey, hopefully im posting this in the right section. im still pretty new to xda as well as the fascinating world of root access, custom recovery's and roms, and such so please let me know if this post is out of place and i apologize ahead of time if it is.
anyways, as for my original reason for posting to the forum, hi everybody ive somewhat recently discovered the possibilities of root access, custom roms and the like. not long ago i was in the market for a new device and came across an offerup post for a galaxy core prime SM-G360T1 (the metro pcs variant) at the price of $35 obo soo, personally never being the biggest samsung supporter i offered $20 n continued looking for another decent LG to hook up to my metro service. long story short they accepted my offer n deals like that shant b ignored so i purchased said core prime n spent the whole night searching through the xda forums to learn all i could.
soo, here i am now the proud owner of my first galaxy device, a rooted SM-G360T1 with a good working touch version of twrp (my preferred choice in custom recoveries) but, as ive come to discover only one very aptly named custom rom exists for this particular galaxy and though i completely respect its creator for all the time & effort he put into releasing the first working pre-rooted, de-bloated custom rom available for the SM-G360T1, i personally decided to stick with the stock rooted firmware and do the de-bloating and such myself.
ok sry about the mindless rambling there i may have gotten a bit carried away. now, as for my point in posting this in the first place. i wouldnt feel right asking others to solve my little issues for me so im not gunna try to pressure anybody into puttin out more roms for the metro core prime. instead, if at all possible i would merely like to meet someone more experienced and well-versed in the art of android development who might b interested in maybe taking me under their wing so that i might get the opportunity to learn the ways of the code and hopefully one day have all the knowledge necessary to develop my own custom roms, or maybe even eventually get myself a couple of apps that i can b proud of onto the play store.
to summarize, i am but a young aspiring software developer will very little knowlege of or experience with code, tho was raised on home built pcs my whole life so i know my way around a desktop pretty well hardware-wise as well as software-wise, im very willing and eager to learn, whilst having already developed through my previous experiences, a healthy fear of bricking yet another phone which has resulted in an increase in the frequency with which i backup my data, as well as a certain acquired hesitation toward attempting any uncertain actions without first doing the appropriate research on the given subject and im hoping to find someone willing to pass some of their vast knowledge down to me whom i can consider to b my teacher, professor, sensai, master, whichever u prefer, and whom i would never hesitate but to thank and give credit for any and all software that i may one day develop as a result of the lessons they had taught me :victory:
aaaanyways, this post turned out a lot longer than i anticipated so, if uve been able to stick it out and make it this far i am both sry for taking up so much of your time, as well as truly grateful to u for having taken said time to hear me out. well, have a wonderful day everybody and i hope to hear from my future sensai soon. until such time i shall b waiting paitiently thnx again for reading
oh and also just wanted to add that if anybody that knows what theyre doing happens to be in the midst of making/porting any new roms for the SM-G360T1 samsung galaxy core prime metro pcs version and needs any help with like testing or wutever let me know, i got a good twrp nandroid backup ready to b restored n just in case of an emergency i still got odin and the rooted kernel that i used to root it in the first place saved onto my pc

Its been fun. Goodbye V20.

Well guys its been a blast. Most of you know me as the creator of DirtySanta. Some of you know me on a more personal note. Then some of you don't even know me. Those of you who have been paying attention the last couple days in either the DirtySanta Thread or those that I have been in close contact with will know what this is about. I bricked my v20(again) but this time it somehow damaged the hardware itself. Lately you will have noticed that alot of major Devs have either moved on or have been thinking about moving on. @SaintZ93 and @Team DevDigitel have moved on. If I remember correctly @Chaz187 is also close to then end of their runs with the v20. As for me, this is my last goodbye. As of this post i will be ceasing all support for DirtySanta(support from me atleast, most of the questions asked these days are repeats) and any project for the v20 that I have released or have been working on(PA).
However... I will not be leaving the scene altogether. I will be going over to the S8+ forums.
I will also leave any hosted files I currently have up for dirtysanta alone. There will be no further updates for dirtysanta(not like there were anyway) and I will be leaving you guys with a parting gift: The secret to restoring a non kdz device back to stock.
I take no responsibility for your device and I WILL NOT provide any support for this.
To revert a non kdz device back to stock you need the following 3 things: Your abootbackup.img made during the dirtysanta process, Your bootbackup.img made during the dirtysanta process and the final item is an untouched matching [REDACTED].
Once again Thanks to everyone in the v20 community. Things could have gone better at times but I think you guys will survive with out me.
EDIT: Since people really wanna know. you need matching abootbackup.img, bootbackup.img and matching untouched system.img
This is the end of Sprint development! Kinda sucks!

I think you're leaving too early.. Sure, the v20 is going to be obsolete soon, but at the moment the v20 is really cheap, an amazing bargain for a great phone.
The opportunities for making interesting custom ROMs is really taking off, especially with the H990DS being rooted.
Sure, get an S8 but get another v20 and make the most of the great work done on it

How do you think development is just taking off when rhe ones responsible for development are saying sayonara? They arent leaving early.
You arrived late.
You worked so hard to do what u did for us theres nothing i can say so sum it up in words we had our run ins im threads but i wish u the best of luck for all u did im eteranlly grateful to u and all the awsome devs here u made a cool phone better
Well my replacement is coming in 7-10 days lol. I dont doubt it comes back on zv8 and a sure way to make sure i dont provide more updates. They killed my device lol so off to the moto z force i go. Im very thankful for the new friendships and team work this device brought to us, as well a new amount of knowledge was obtained through a crazy transition from su to magisk, the whole lg specifics, and just making things work for a great group of people. it was fun. DevDigitel Roms have been closed as of this morning. Thanks everyone!
You guys are awesome, thanks for the efforts you put forth and all that assistance you give.
Looking on the bright side of things, the small level of development isn't necessarily a bad thing for the V20. It has so many awesome features already, what is something that is so needed that requires extensive development? Sure, we can always try out new features. But lets look at the past, where the development community basically made a phone usable between extending battery life or adding features that should have already been there.
The entire scenario of development for phones has changed in my opinion. Take with a grain of salt, im no dev just a mooch that has been here for many many years. But seems in the past, development was a MUST. Now, honestly, I wouldn't be devastated if my phone was bone stock. But with that said, I sure do appreciate the additional features you guys have developed.
Another thing, replacing phones themselves and upgrading has changed. Honestly, I don't want a phone that doesn't have a headphone jack or removable battery. So going to hang on to this one as long as possible! Where beforehand, new phone brought features we WANT not DREAD.
Best of luck to you guys in the future!
Yep thank you 2151, I learned a lot and still have a ton left to learn, but I definately appreciate all you've done for the v20, I have a love/hate relationship with mine. I love the audio and hardware quality, but there wasn't much easy about modding the thing, as a novice anyway. Felt like smashing mine a few times. I know you veteran's get frustrated with people asking questions noobs should be able to find in the forums, but if ur trying to learn it can be tough to find the exact info you need to know, and there is so much to learn. Just saying in general anyway, not u specifically. I see a lot of guys getting chewed out on here, some deservedly, some not Imo. Samsung pretty much lost my business for the crap they released last year, note7 and a 10" pos tablet where the touchscreen didn't work right and they weren't gonna replace, I'm Lg from now on I think. If they stick to what they've been doing anyway, we'll see.
I'll be switching to the S8+ soon as I can afford it or the Note 8 .
I don't think we've met, but I wanna say thanks for your hard work, and all the other devs involved in the V20 here. I just ordered one because I needed a new phone (problems with current), my son's V20 impressed me, and most importantly, it can be rooted! I've rooted every Android device I've personally owned, and won't buy one that can't be rooted. I just can't stomach being told I can't access files on my SD card, can't block annoying ads, can't remove annoying bloatware, etc.
I know I'm late to the party, but the upside will hopefully be that you guys have worked out all the kinks. Thanks again, and enjoy the S8+!
