[Q] Why does google update always force me to reboot? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The app that calls itself just "google" sometime (like today) wants to apply an update. Every time that happens, I first get a crash from "One More Clock", then the update finishes, then when I exit the play store, the launcher also appears to have crashed. I always have to power cycle the Nexus 5 to get it back (which works fine, but is irritating). Anyone know why this update always crashes the phone? Does anyone else have this problem?
I get the same "google" update on my Nexus 7 (which also runs One More Clock) and there are no problems. Only the Nexus 5 has this mysterious behavior.

I have never ever seen "OneMoreClock" on any of mine Nexus devices.

Wipe cache and Dalvik.

Forget wiping cache. I would be suspecting the "One More Clock". It's either a poorly written app or something more malicious but it doesn't sound like anything to do with Google.

Can't change wallpaper. Google search force close error pop up.

I can't change or even enter the wallpaper gallery due to a Google Search force close error.
If I press down on the homescreen and touch the wallpaper icon to change the wallpaper an error pop up immediately shows "Unfortunately Google search has stopped" with Report and OK buttons. (I have sent a report already).
Once you click either of the buttons it takes you back to the homescreen. If you try again the same thing happens.
Am I doing something wrong? Anyone else have this problem?

Just to clarify, the OP has a Nexus 5? Or are you running the 4.4 launcher on a different phone?

I'm on a brand new Nexus 5- non rooted, straight out of the box. I'm using the native, unmodified 4.4 launcher on a Nexus 5.
I did a factory reset in the end.
I think the problem lies with the automatic backup and restore of apps by google play.
After a factory reset I let google restore the apps to my phone automatically all in one go. This caused the same problem again. I couldn't change the wallpaper or even enter the wallpaper gallery again > pop up error message "Google search has stopped working."
I then did another factory reset and DIDN't allow google to restore all my apps automatically. I painstakingly restored each app one by one checking each time if a certain app caused the problem. (Yes this took hours) I didn't get the problem again.
So I think it was caused by google play restoring all the apps in quick succession. It seems to be too much at once. It must have corrupted something.
Now the phone works ok and I can change the wallpapers and have access to the wallpaper gallery.
Hmm, I wonder if it was trying to restore Google Search from the Play store and that caused an issue somehow. Did you try clearing it's app data before doing the factory reset? I've heard that has been a fix for people running the 4.4 launcher on other phones who have been getting FC's.

Thanks for the replies Yadao.
No, I cleared the Play store data and cache before the final factory reset. I think it did "restore" Google Voice search from my Galaxy Nexus. Perhaps it was that, that was causing a conflict.

hey guys how to fix it i have this trouble too :好:

Pressing the back button to exit out of an app opens other apps

I have had a GS2, GNex, N4 and now a N5 and started having this issue since the nexus 4, can’t remember exactly when it started but I think it was around android 4.3 because I remember hoping that an update to the OS would fix this and when 4.4 came the issue still happened.
The issue is that I use the back button to exit out of apps completely but sometimes and I believe that it is completely random, when I open let’s say whatsapp and I press back to exit out of it, it sometimes opens another app that was on my recent apps list and then exits out of it by itself, this happens even if whatsapp was the only app open, is not like I went from a random app to whatsapp and I was backing out of whatsapp to these other app and this other app just blinks and closes out.
Anybody has this issue?
Here is a video showing the issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU0n0j9LUCw
I get this often. No fix that I'm aware of :/.

Is this an android issue? or could it be our config? can anyone say they do not experience this issue?
I don't recall having this on my nexus 4, and I don't recall having this on my nexus 7. I'll have to pay more attention on my nexus 7 and update of I see it.
Yes, most probably it's a KitKat issue. I'm facing this problem as well and there was a big thread about this issue and there were many people with this problem :cyclops:
I face this problem on stock rom as well as on a custom rom..

oops, must have missed it. thanks for the info
I'm having the exact same issue on my Nexus 5. I happened on my Nexus 4 as well, so definitely an Android issue.
And you are right about it starting when Android 4.3 was released. I have been waiting patiently for a fix for a while now..

Awkward issue in Maps (all versions)

alright, so i bought the nexus 5 month or so ago.
the issue i'm having:
i go in maps. say i'm rather close over berlin. i enter "Munich" in the seach bar. the "flyover" starts. however it doesnt finish over munich, it stops halfway through.
on my device its reproducable. no matter what destination i enter, the flyover just stops somewhere around halfway through, always at the very same spot. it i then go back to the search bar and tap on the "go" button again, the flyover continues, but still doesnt end. it takes me 3 times tapping on the "go"/"search" button until munich is visible. however it is still not centered. even after 5 further clicks its still not completely zoomed in.
this really bugs me. i dont use maps very often, but when i do i have to see this crap.
not quite sure if related, but i'm playing family guy lately. whenever you order a character to do something, the camera usually locks on the character while he walks to wherever he has to go. on my device, the camera just stops following him after a few seconds. seems the same/similar issue than whats going on in maps.
any idea what it could be? i really dont want to root and install a custom rom on the nexus 5 until google supports it.
i already cleared the cache, cleared the data and uninstalled all updates. in every version in every configuration this bug persists.

First step I would try is rebooting your phone into Safe mode. If the problem persists then you can eliminate 3rd party apps from the equation. If it's fixed then you can assume one of your apps is causing the issue.

Have you tried different Locations settings? Does the same thing happen during High Performance, Battery Saver, and Device Only?
Only other thing I can think to try is resetting the phone to factory default.

Google Voice stuck on screen

Since the ota, if i am in google messenger and use Google voice to speak a text, close Messenger and open it back up later, the Google Voice screen pops up and will not go away till i reboot. .Booted into recovery and cleared cache and that didn't work.
It's happened to me a couple of times. But a quick reboot solves the problem. I've found its Google keyboard itself getting hung up.

If you click Recents and swipe everything away it normally fix's it with out a reboot.
This is a glitch with the actual Google app from what I have seen. Customer had it on a Note 4 haven't seen it on the Note 5 yet but the only fix we saw was to force stop the Google app.... Which is a pain to do all the time. We uninstalled the Google app update and it fixed it then updated it again and it came back. Tried it with different keyboards.... In the end then fix is to uninstall and turn auto update off till it gets fixed by yet another Google update

Chance it might not come back but it could just be your setup. Since obviously not everyone is having it but some are. Mine has yet to do it. I will try to cause it. Before it was caused over and over by using the speech on ANY keyboard that uses Google for voice recognition and then lock the screen after it types a word of what you said. Open the Phone back and it should be stuck.
UPDATE: Yea I can't make mine do it but anyone who had that issue I did those steps and it replicated.

Why does my Google Pixel randomly reboot?

Hi. My device worked just perfect until 5 days ago. It slowly began to ignore some tasks like opening apps or doing calls.
2 days ago my google pixel with Android 8.0 started to ignore every input i made, like opening apps or trying to reboot. It behaving like this after taking some pictures with the rear cam. After some attepts in opening apps it started to reboot. But instead of a normal reboot it stuck in a booting screen (the one with the Google G and a gray animation bar underneath). It took a while and i waited until it seemed that the OS booted correctly. But after this my device started to reboot randomly after a few minutes. After a while i figured out, that i can hold the power button while the screen with the google G was up to reboot it normally. This worked so that the phone was at least half an hour or more working until it rebooted again out of nowhere.
So far i tried to get it in safe mode and delete some apps like whatts app etc. In safe mode i didnt notice any crashes so far.... but in normal one it does a lot so deleting apps wasnt helpful. Turning on flight mode was not helpful either.
What can I do? What could it be?

Same thing happens with my Pixel, sometimes the phone is just get stuck on some random screen then I have to press and hold it for 15 seconds to let it reboot again. Lately I have started to see another problem, when it reboots bunch of google apps and services stops working and gives hell lot of notifications. All this started to happen after Android Oreo update

I noticed problems with my ear speaker as well. And i cant make phone calls. The phone doent respond anymore when i try to.
Same problem after android 8.0 update
If you have installed the latest Google phone/dialer app, that is likely the problem, was for me.
Find the app in settings and uninstall,it will roll back to a previous version and hopefully fix your issues.

My pixel does the same thing, ever since I updated to 8.0, have you tried doing a factory reset? I haven't done it yet, I have been uninstalling apps for the last couple of days, when it is in safe mode it works good, but when it's not, it freezes and restarts. I'm going to try uninstalling the latest version on google dialer to see if it helps.
I just want to update everyone in case you are having a problem with the random reboots.
I uninstalled the phone update and it was still randomly rebooting so I backed up the stuff that I needed and just did a factory reset. I have been a full day on my phone without any problems. I did a factory reset twice, just in case, for some crazy reason, the phone still had a problem, I wiped it twice! I think you'll be good with only wiping once.
Anyways to sum it all up, I did a factory reset, restored all of my backed up data from my pixel, I had about 120 apps and the phone has not had a problem since. I hope it helps someone else.

Mate, please report if you're still getting the reboots. Mine disappear for two weeks after I do a factory reset and then come back. Same happens in Safe Mode. Bug report claims it's 'Sense Key : Hardware Error [current]' and Google rep says it's a hardware issue (Toshiba's memory or something). Buganiser thread is here.
wrong place sry
Had this on my pixel xl. I was on the 8.1 beta.
factory reset, rolled back to 8.0

haven't had a reboot in over a week now

Yea, the issue is back, has been for about 2 weeks. This phone is really starting to be a pain in the ass, I can't believe that it happens so often. Did you do a warranty fix?
That's a pity. Yes, I did. Got the device roughly two and a half weeks ago. Flashed 8.0 and then sideloaded 8.1 right away. Knock on wood, all good. But there's still a report every other day in Buganiser of a phone even on 8.1 doing this.
Got mine at release. November 16. Google won't replace it either. I have a one pixel brick
I have the same problem. However, it is not frequent enough on Android P beta. But as soon as I go back to the stable build, it starts to do the same thing. Did you guys have any luck resolving this or should I send it back to the vendor I bought it from. They won't replace the device in Pakistan but may be will fix it in some manner.
