Pressing the back button to exit out of an app opens other apps - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had a GS2, GNex, N4 and now a N5 and started having this issue since the nexus 4, can’t remember exactly when it started but I think it was around android 4.3 because I remember hoping that an update to the OS would fix this and when 4.4 came the issue still happened.
The issue is that I use the back button to exit out of apps completely but sometimes and I believe that it is completely random, when I open let’s say whatsapp and I press back to exit out of it, it sometimes opens another app that was on my recent apps list and then exits out of it by itself, this happens even if whatsapp was the only app open, is not like I went from a random app to whatsapp and I was backing out of whatsapp to these other app and this other app just blinks and closes out.
Anybody has this issue?
Here is a video showing the issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU0n0j9LUCw

I get this often. No fix that I'm aware of :/.

Is this an android issue? or could it be our config? can anyone say they do not experience this issue?

I don't recall having this on my nexus 4, and I don't recall having this on my nexus 7. I'll have to pay more attention on my nexus 7 and update of I see it.

Yes, most probably it's a KitKat issue. I'm facing this problem as well and there was a big thread about this issue and there were many people with this problem :cyclops:
I face this problem on stock rom as well as on a custom rom..

oops, must have missed it. thanks for the info

I'm having the exact same issue on my Nexus 5. I happened on my Nexus 4 as well, so definitely an Android issue.
And you are right about it starting when Android 4.3 was released. I have been waiting patiently for a fix for a while now..

I can't believe this problem still exists on Android 5.0!

Intermittent Hangouts Keyboard Problem

I'm having an issue with opening hangouts and the keyboard not inputting anything into the message field. The keyboards responds to keys pressed but nothing shows up.
I have to close Hangouts from Recent Apps and reopen it to get the keyboard to work. Happens quite often but not everytime.
Problem is on a Nexus 5 with 4.4.2. This is my second Nexus 5 so I'm thinking it's a bug in the software but haven't found anyone else with the issue.
Any ideas?
Thanks

or it could be a mod that your using(xposed?), or an app that you have installed interfering. honestly, this is the first ive heard of such an issue. you are using the stock keyboard?

Yup stock keyboard. I can't think of any apps that may be causing the issue other than "Notify Me" I haven't looked deep enough into whether it only happens randomly when swiping from the popup notification or not.
Going to have to pay attention to that.

Same issue here, I found your topic on another forum OP
Stock nexus 5 here.
I've experienced this a few times. Usually I just back out and re-open the message thread and It's fixed.
Good to know I'm not the only one! It's a pretty irritating issue which is about to force me to find a new app for SMS!
So I solved my issue. I was using a notification app called "NotifyMe!"
Since removing it, I haven't had any more keyboard issues.
Yeah, even I face this issue... However, I'm on a custom rom and use SwiftKey.
I face this issue not only in Hangouts but also when I use whatsapp as well.
But it happens rarely so didn't give it much thought..

You can determine if it is a 3rd party app interfering by rebooting your phone into Safe mode. If the problem goes away, you know it's one of your apps such as the OP's "Notify Me" which appears to of been his cause for this issue.
I also had this issue running Swiftkey, switched tinthe aosp keyboard and haven't had an issue with it

Never had this issue on my N5, however I've seen this bug a few times on my GF phone (HTC one s + SwiftKey)

I have an annoying issue where the blue anchor thing stops functioning properly when hangouts is in landscape... not sure if this is a common problem or not?

[Q] Weird Dialer Behaviour..

On my rooted stock Nexus 5 with KitKat 4.4.2 after I make a call the last app I used opens up and I have to exit it. My wife has a different phone also with KitKat 4.4.2 and her phone does the same thing. On both phones if I close all recent apps before I make a call this doesn't happen. So I'm thinking this is a bug in KitKat.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks!
Anyone?

Yes you are correct... It seems to be a bug with KitKat.
There are many others that are experiencing similar issues as you are. When they exit the dialer or exit an app using the back button it will open an app from the recent apps menu. Hopefully this will be addressed in a update.

[Q] Pressing the back button too fast bring back recent apps on 4.4.3

Anyone noticed how when you press the back button to exit and application too fast, the screen for you recent apps also display before you are taken back to the home screen?
This issues started after 4.4.3
Anybody have any solutions?
It's always been a weird KitKat bug, for me it brings up a random app from somewhere in the recents list that's not even been used for a while. Lol

Yes, not a 4.4.3 specific issue sadly. Was hoping this would have been resolved in the latest update but clearly not. D'oh. I'm completely stock everything, unrooted and it's happened since I bought the phone in February.

I am completely stock too. I only started noticing it since 4.4.3 - or maybe it was always there.
Its quite irritating. Is google looking at this?
I've seen a dramatic increase since 4.3.3. Doesn't do it all the time but once it starts it seems to keep doing it for a while.
I cleared Cache and Dalvik but didn't make any difference.
Think this happened to me once recently, opened Google Chrome on its own.
Maybe it's not a bug. Returning to a previously used app could be seen as a convenience. Just a thought.

I've never experienced this issue. Why not just press the home button to exit the app?

Lol. No it returns to any random app ib the recents list, not the last opened

I can confirm this starting from 4.4.3. It's quite simple to reproduce it for me:
Open Chrome and press the home button.
Open WhatsApp and enter a conversation. Press the back button two times quickly.
This should bring you back to your home screen. Instead it immediately will pop up Chrome for a moment, just to close it automatically afterwards. I press the back button two times in a lot of apps, so this is starting to be really annoying. I'm running everything stock. Has anyone experiencing the issue tried to hard-reset the phone to see if it goes away?
I used to face this on stock rom as well... Ever since I've started using a custom rom (AICP) , the bug has disappeared.

I can confirm it only started coming up since 4.4.3. It did not happen on 4.4.2.
I'm using stock Nexus 5, with Nova launcher.

I've tested it myself and I can confirm that a factory reset does not solve this issue.
Confirm, but true only for stock 4.4.3. Fast pressing back button to exit an app will cause opening last active app (f.e. open dialer with messaging app in background, twice-triple tap back and it will close dialer but bring messaging app right from home screen and close it (wut?)). Running custom and there is no such bug.

Ditto
After applying the 4.4.4 OTA this bug still seems to be present.

Random app opens after unlocking

Sometimes when I unlock my phone, a random app opens. Anyone else have this issue?
I did on my Note 3 whenever on a TouchWiz rom, but so far not on the note 5. Never could figure out what caused it because it didn't happen at all when i was on CM.

I have this issue too. Sometimes the calendar app is open when I unlock the phone. I'm running Thrash Lite ROM with arter 4.3 kernel. I just thought it was me. Doesn't really bother me.
YES, multiple times per day. I think it started happening after the last update for me. It's really freaking annoying. I'm on stock, not rooted, and running Nova. It seems to always be an app that's on the home screen, even if my finger is nowhere near it.

I wonder if it is a Nova issue? I use Nova as well
Nah, I don't use Nova and have that issue. I'm on stock non rooted with Google Now launcher.
This happened to me while I was on my note 3. Someone pointed me to this app in the play store that does a scan to find out what apps play dirty and launch random ads. Maybe there is something that can catch the culprit launching the apps.

Screen goes black, buttons don't respond, can get calls from other phones to me

Hi all, I have been facing a really weird problem for the past few weeks. Sometimes all of a sudden, my phone screen completely turns black, and the buttons (as well as the alert slider) stop responding. There is no indication whatsoever that it is NOT switched off. However when I try calling it from another phone, ring can be heard as if my phone is working fine. I don't understand where the problem lies. Any suggestions are welcome.
I am rooted with Magisk 19.3, Riru-EdXposed 0.4.5.1 Sandhook, Riru-Core v19.5.
Edit: Android Pie. OOS 9.5.10.GM21AA
I had this problem recently when accessing certain apks. Reflashing the firmware sorted it for me.
no root same problem to me after I update from Android 9 to Android 10

Thanks I will try doing that.
Same problem here when opening quite a few apps. Issue didn't start until I updated to Android 10 (and rooted), on a converted T-Mobile variant. Wonder if that is the source of our problem. I'm sorely tempted to use the MSM tool and go back on TMO's Android 9 (and pray for a official update to 10). Unless someone can find a solution to this, rebooting the phone every time I want to open certain apps is a real pain.

It definitely is a A10 issue as I too have started to have this issue when opening games and ram extensive apps. A workaround is to open the game or app in split screen mode and once the app has started you can switch back to fullscreen mode or start the app from recents. That has worked for me 100% of the time. The 10.0.1 update seemed to make it worse because you have to reboot the phone to escape the black screen were as at first you could use gestures to escape the app.

Good idea using split screen, I'll have to start doing that for the time being. I moved over to Open Beta 3 and the issue is still there and worst as with 10.0.1. Hopefully OnePlus can nail this bug soon. It's turning a otherwise amazing phone into a headache.
I have the same problem. Running 10.0 rooted. For me, this has only happened when opening Youtube Vanced. One clever solution is to enable "Quickly turn on camera" and doublepress power if this happens. This launches camera and returns the screen to normal.

Experiencing this too, it does seem to be related to certain .apks, how bizarre is that? Really don't want to re-flash as I am encrypted... Can you dirty-flash with an encrypted system and not loose any data?

I reflashed through TWRP and all data was fine. I'm encrypted too.
But it goes without saying, make sure you do a backup before flashing anything
