I recieved my Z3 10 days ago.
It's superfast and the batterylife is awesome.
But 2 days ago, i noticed a damage in my Screen.
It's not big, but you can feel and see it..
I never dropped the phone, i even didn't use it often, because actually it's my secondary phone.
I never put it in my pocket with keys or money or anything.
So this morning i noticed a crack in the screen.
It's not big, too. But you can see it..
It looks like the screen is to big and instable and cracked.
This happened over night without any external influence.
Anybody got this too?
maybe it was the neighbors cat? never heard of a phone that screen mysteriously cracks itself. any pics?
.
Actually, the screen of the Z2 cracked spontaneously over the night some people. (From one corner to another.) Sony is not using Gorilla Glass but the Dragontrail, idk how good it is.

Another one of those my screen mysteriously cracked for no reason thread.... I'm not sure what to make of these on XDA?
The amount of complaints are growing so quickly, all the chances of my buying a Z3 are fading.
I think it's time for a recall (that they will never do).

I feel the same way.. I went ahead and ordered an iPhone 6 plus to hold me over until I make up my mind and Sony decide to release price and availability on T-Mobile.
So here are some pictures.
It's a very small crack, it doesn't disturbs me but i think it isn't waterproof anymore...

I have an idea what can cause the crack.
When i hear Music with the speakers and full volume, the display vibrates a bit.
Can this be the reason?

Actually, it happens when the glass is under pressure / stress.
Gave my mum my Galaxy Nexus a half year ago. A week ago she put it in a stacker in the car with much space, but rubber on the ground. We drove an hour on the Autobahn, not even fast, suspension doesn't even move much because it's so flat.. still it broke into 100 pieces, I've never seen a cracked screen like that. It didn't even move. But to be fair, it fell to the ground very often. Like 20 times, without any damage. I guess it was a bit under stress / pressure and cracked at the slightest touch...
If the glass from the z3 is under stress because it's a faulty unit, it may even crack because of a fast changing temperature. Out of your pocket --> cold table? Could happen imo. That should be covered by the warranty imo. But that depends on the country where you live in.. In germany for example we have a relatively strong consumer protection. If you have absolutely no scratches on the phone, it should be obvious that this is not your fault.

I've had enough phones to know, they don't break from forces of nature or on their own. Hot to Cold, Cold to hot, faulty or not, doesn't happen.

You had some phones and they didn't break? Wow.
I had some cars that didn't break in years of usage. So cars can't break from forces of nature or on their own.
When there is constant pressure on the glass from the frame itself, it will break much faster or with less force.
But keep ignoring the facts and please, please never read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_glass_breakage
OP should read this, Sony repaired several Xperia Z1 phones for free:

I've put together a Google forms survey to collect some objective breakage data:
Sony Xperia Z3 / Z3 Compact - Glass Survey
Please take some time to complete the survey whether you've experienced a breakage or not, it's important to have a complete set of data. You will be able to view the survey results after submitting the form.

There is no pressure from the frame, the glass fits inside it and rests on a lip. Hence why people have "gap issues". The actual frame puts no pressure on the glass under normal use as far as I can see. Unless of course the frame warps slightly, then I could see pressure building up at corners.

That's what I thought, too. And I had the same ideas like that famous "neighbor's cat", didn't take it for serious.
Till this morning, when I found a nice crack in the screen after charging the Z3 over night, listening to music prior to sleeping.
Crack starts at the right side if the upper speaker, extends down to the lower left edge of the phone. You can see and feel it, touchscreen still working, but with problems.
No drops, no weight placed on the Z3, no famous cats, not even mice.
Reason ? Unknown.
A bold guess: Vibrations. Z3 was resting with it's lower edge against a metal bar of the little table next to my bed, I had music playing quite loud. As the upper speaker causes the phone to vibrate noticeably, the constant vibrations plus the metal bar preventing the Z3 from moving might have caused the issue. And it's the upper speaker where the crack starts.
Oh, oh, Sony...
UPDATE
Just had a call with Vodafone Germany - they told me it's a KNOWN problem many users experienced. They also revealed it's a manufacturing fault, and there's an agreement with Sony regarding repair or exchange of affected devices.
Passi1909: Du bist also nicht allein.
Oh, oh, Sony...
UPDATE 2
Just had a chat with Sonymobile. Unfriendly as ever. OF COURSE they don't know anything about the problem. OF COURSE there are no manufacturing defects. OF COURSE they don't know anything about agreements with Vodafone.
So it's the typical Sonymobile Germany habit. (They also completely ignored thousands of bent Z2 Tablets a few months ago.)
Presently, I am speaking with Vodafone Germany again to find a proper solution. But I guess I'll say goodbye to the Z3, don't want to risk another failure.
Aha, interesting. NOW Vodafone Germany (different agent) claims there are NO agreements with Sony.
Strange world.
Trying the Sony repair service, now.
I can foresee a nice class lawsuit headed their way. Sony might go bankrupt in a couple of years the way they have lost the walkman wars (audio wars), and forget about Video wars too - Samsung and LG are really getting in there, and mobile wars - gone are the days where the P800, P900, P1000 (??) were the best phones ever to the fact that Apple now has a clear dominance there and Samsung has literally taken Sony out when it comes to Android.
I can imagine that it might be time to teach Sony a lesson of cheating people with 6 monthly devices that are "downgrades" in terms of "life".
Chefproll, start recording your calls and get things documented.
I wanted to finally buy a sony Smartphone on christmas, in this case the z3, but after I've heard a lot worse problems from this, I can probably forget it. pity, because i thought that the sony xperia z3 is the most prettiest and best Smartphone on the market

It's a nice, cute device which is real fun to play with.
But I just cannot live with the subzero camera - and with a crack in the display. Device now is unusable, touchscreen now behaves totally erratic.
I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy S5. I NEVER EVER wished to buy another Samsung device. But after my experience with the Z3's camera, the cracked screen (don't listen to music) and the attitude of the Sonymobile staff - goodbye, Sony.

i will buy a htc one m8 or a nexus 5.
i cannot believe this ****...
One of the main reasons I bought a Z3 is because it is apparently dust and water resistant, this is a big plus working in construction, but the fact these phones have recieved IP ratings is a joke. I had my z3 sitting at the side of the shower playing music, it wasn't recieving direct flow of water just droplets splashing on to it. I now have a crackly, low volume speaker. Waterproof my ass.
Have the phone drying out now but I don't expect it to rectify itself. What are my options here?
This issue has been discussed countless times... just let it dry. It'll come back to normal.
its actually water filling up around the speakers and takes a bit to dry out, quite common with waterproof speakers. all my previous sony phones have done this when they get wet, give it 30 minutes or so. dont sweat your phone getting damaged
Does this mean my phone is not waterproof or is it a common problem with all Z3s?

Yeah not a problem. Speakers work via vibrations. I can't vibrate when wet

It's not a problem, but a normal characteristic of waterproof speakers.
If you read the user manual they explain that it is normal and can take up to two hours to dry, although in practice that is always 30 mins for me or less.

when there is water on the membrane which creates the soundwaves this changes how it moves and thus how it sounds. That is just physics @ work and not the fault of sony
Hello, last night i decided to wash myphone under the my shrink. After that also i had low speaker volumes. My lower speaker completly died but after an hour or two came back to live. Now my phone passed 14th hour since i washed it but still the volumed didnt went back to normal. Should i go to Sony Center or wait a little bit longer?
I dropped some baked beans on my Z3 and the sound was muffled for a couple of weeks until I realised I obviously hadn't washed it properly.
Now it's still a lot quieter than the top speaker, but I think that's normal? I'm not sure now, which is annoying.
RTFM before making yourself look clueless
If the speaker or microphone get wet, their function may be impacted until the water
has completely dried. Please note that the drying time can be up to three hours
depending on the environment. During this time, you can, however, use other
features in the device that do not utilise the speaker or microphone. All compatible
accessories, including batteries, chargers, handsfree devices and micro USB cables,
are not waterproof and dust resistant on their own.

Hello everyone,
I came from a Z1, the mic started malfunctioning and I could only be when using handsfree on it.
So I ordered a Z3 from my carrier, got it shipped by mail. When I received it, the SIM/SD card flap wouldn't close properly, so I phoned customer service and got a replacement Z3 mailed to me. The next one I got (received it 3 days ago) looked fine, until today when I took it out of my front pocket. I heard a poping sound, I had earphones plugged into it. I could see the back glass starting to come off. I'd say whole top left 1/4 of the phone is not glued on anymore.
I really liked the Z1 and the Z3 as well as features and look go, but I am now getting unsure about getting this phone. Am I just unlucky and got two poorly built units, or are they mostly all bad?
JF
You're not the only one, no. My sister bought a Z3 and the left side of the back panel (looking at the back) is not properly attached either, and is flexed outwards. After a small amount of use its to the point now where it is sort of flapping about and she needs to use a case.
My girlfriends Z3 went into a small amount of fresh water to take one picture and moments later the screen went black and died completely. After a few minutes googling i found many other people having the same issues with the Z3's.
Just bad luck bud, get it exchanged while you can. Carriers can be real douche after 7 days or whatever depending your location.
Nothing wrong with my z3 even though its second hand. *fingers crossed*
Just got my 3rd Z3, this one the flaps look fine, the back glass seems glued correctly and it passes the pressure test... The downside is, the box was sealed when I got it, but it was missing the screen protectors. Oh well... just my luck. I'll peel off the ones from the previous one before I ship it back, until I order some new ones.

It may be.
The first two Z3's I got had screen protectors included in the box. The last one didn't...
Anyway, the last Z3 will go back as it is no longer working. Over the weekend, I was at a friend's batchelor party and we were doing indoor surfing. I was filming him from aside and the phone took a few water splashes, and the display started flickering and died within a few minutes. I am terribly dissapointed in this phone. I really enjoyed my Z1, with all it's glitches and freezing. The Z3's performance was great, it seems it's just the build quality. I had bough my wife a Z3 a few months ago, as she likes water sports and she liked how I could use my Z1 at the beach/lake, but now she is scared of even getting some rain on her's, and we can't return it for another one since we're over the buyer's remorse period.
It's a shame there are no other waterproof phones out there (besides Samsungs).

Buy SAMSUNG and do with that indoor surfing.
Now that's some really bad luck. I heard the Z3 is less than perfect when it comes to build quality but this is just insane. Mine works well and is waterproof but has a dead pixel (I think it's covered under warranty but I don't feel like going to the service center). I hope you get one that works. Other than that if you want something with less than flagship specs there are plenty of rugged phones to choose from. Buy one of those for watersports and buy a different flagship for daily use. I heard the Samsung S6 is supposed to be pretty good.

Chill, I was just giving OP my point of view. He seems to be very disappointed with Sony but he wants a waterproof phone, his best option is to buy a rugged phone for watery outdoors and a different flagship for daily dry use. I like my Z3 more than the S6, but if my Z3 were to suddenly explode and make me get buyer's remorse I would most likely buy the S6 which is the second best phone on the market after Z3 imo.

Ok, no problem.
I think I'll keep the Z1 around for watersports. It still runs fine, the only problem is the mic is busted on it. I was thinking of using it with a sports band to put on my forearm and use as a GPS while riding my motorcycle. I'll just get a regular, non-waterproof phone instead.
I've had a Galaxy S4 in the past. The hardware is great, but I don't like the UI and all the software they load it with. I might look into the M9, since it seems like the one of the last ones with SD card support. Anyone has comments on it?

For the 2nd time now on my xperia z3 I have an orange / yellow tint on the left side of the screen. It's almost parallel with magnetic charging port which was the same place as last time. Getting it repaired last was a nightmare. Although Sony were quick to accept for repair they send to 3rd who took over to fix and sent back phone in worse condition with speakers and phone back together all loose and creaky. They took back and another week later I got back again good as new.
It's a shame I really like this phone.
Anyone know what could cause this? Self diagnostics on phone says it's all good
Can't really be without a phone for another week

i have exactly the same but not from the very beginning, now after some months.
did you found any solution?
thanks
Sony replaced the phone after 2nd time and it's just done it again. I'm escalating with Sony as this is 3 times in 12 months with 2 different phones.
I use a case mate clear and notice this is the only part the case doesn't cover.
If you press on the frame where the orange is it transfers to screen which leads me to believe the frame is weak there. Once I get it fixed I'm changing cases to a ringke. The official Sony case completely covers that side so think it must be linked.
What cases are you using?

Repair # 1-20162112859
My phone was left on the table while it was raining last week (flaps fully closed of course) and when I picked it up to check something after a while I saw it was turning itself off. After that it never came back alive no matter what I tried. I noticed the camera lenses had fully frosted up so it was apparent that water had seeped in somehow.
I dried the phone for over a day but it simply didn't work! I sent it to Sony for warranty repair as I expected it to be covered since I used it under their advertised conditions and you expect it to take a bit of rain at the minimum.
To my utter horror they have come back as saying that because the phone has some other physical damage on the other side (it has a very slight bend in the left side middle which i don't recall it having) it means that the warranty is automatically void and they don't even need to investigate the water damage or the reason why the waterproofing failed via faulty flaps! But the failed flap is the one on the opposite/right side where the SIM and memory card go! It doesn't even make sense!
I have attached the repair centre (SBE Ltd. UK) sent pictures as evidence.
I assure you that the 2 are completely unrelated and on the opposite sides of the phone. They are simply using cause and effect and not scientific tests to rub their hands off my claim. There are plenty threads online showing that Sony Z3 phones have been failing at waterproofing. Given Sony's dropping sales they should at least help out their customers and stick by their principles and marketing claims.
To top up the experience the rude customer service even charge me £20 to ship phone back! Extortion?
I was a staunch Sony fan who owned the Xperia S, Z, Z2 and Z3 but my Sony story is well and truly over! I will go to a small consumer court as I will not give up because I am right! can anyone in UK advise what are my rights and course of action?
More shocked than disappointed.
is good to konw that sony isn't that good in customer help...too bad sony, too bad.
by the way yestarday a whashed my 4 days z3 in cold water (there where ice cubes in) and today i noticed that the camera and the led are covered by water bubbles.
now i hope that in few days water will evaporate. so sony's phones aren't all waterproof....i think they sell even phones that don't pass all the quality controls. so bad.
Luckily mine got replaced by Carphone Warehouse but this'll be my last Sony phone probably. Problem is I'm running out of manufacturers as they all end up disappointing in one way or another. In fact only Apple have failed to let me down with phones so far.
Good luck with the claim BTW. Small claims court is a good idea; no way will Sony bother to send anyone along to the hearing.
Good luck. So annoying when one of the best devices o the market has so little customer care behind it. I suggest you take it to twitter, seems to be the place where no company wants to tarnish their reputation.

I understand OP frustration, but it is obvious that some physical force bent phone and that caused waterproof fail, and that caused phone to die...

is good to konw that sony isn't that good in customer help...too bad sony, too bad.
by the way yestarday a whashed my 4 days z3 in cold water (there where ice cubes in) and today i noticed that the camera and the led are covered by water bubbles.
now i hope that in few days water will evaporate. so sony's phones aren't all waterproof....i think they sell even phones that don't pass all the quality controls. so bad.

If the water was really cold, it will sublimated to the innards of the phone (duh)
Oh Sony quality control ist one of the best but Ive gone trough 3 z3 to find the present one without hardware defects. But all 3 of them survive a pool dive so I trust Sony with waterproofing (ironically)
I've got a Xperia Z3 Compact that has already been for repairs 3 times(1 with initial problem the other two was to fix their repair twice), unfortunately last week decided to clean the phone under water tap, and found that after a while the phone stopped working, water went through, so water proofing had gone after they repaired, right now still waiting for their escalation team to get my phone to go for repair. Not happy at all, I also own 3 other Sony phones Z, Z2,Z3 and my Z2 has gone to repairs last year but now I would not have 100% confidence that the phone is water proof. SBE UK LTD really has bad workmanship.

I had them repair a tablet which had bright spots and it came back with a dead pixel...so I was without a tablet for over a month and no compensation. What a bunch of dicks.

i think that cold water was the problem :silly: , i've tried in normal water and water doesnt get in.
hardware defects remain front and back glass aren't aligned to the frame as they shoud ( i went to a store and watched another z3 and it hadn't that problem. So quality controll isn't perfect for me...you can't sell a phone for 500+ euros and admit such imperfections.
I have the same problem of being denied, but instead because there are two small cracks on the glass.
See my thread on this; I'm going to try and force them into an arbitration in the hopes they'll service my phone instead of paying their lawyer.

Sony phones are not water PROOF but are water RESISTANT upto certain limits provided the flaps are tightly secured.
If phone gets damaged due to water then warranty is void. Sony is bluffing the customers with their water proof gimmicks which we should not fall prey. My phone got wet in rain but I was lucky to save it without going to worst service center chain of Sony. It did it myself using DIY videos carefully
