[Q] Cannot send or receive sms, but mms works fine? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My S5 can't send sms messages, but can send mms. Yesterday my wife S4 started having the same problem. Here are the details of my phone. Has anyone else had this issue?

Yes, very frustrating. My wife and I have the same phones (s5 with Lollipop). Starting Friday morning, we haven't been able to recieve SMS from each other or from 2 other family members with same phones. MMS works fine...

I guess we'll have to wait for a patch then...

So nobody else with the same problem?

I called sprint. The tech said that the upgrade messed up the connection to the network. He said the following steps will fix it when you call CS...
1) SOC google voice
2) power device off and pull battery
3) CS Agent change MSID AND NAI address
4) power phone on
5) Agent follow onscreen instructions with ## code. ..
Worked for my wife and I.

Woke up to an update waiting. Updated the profile and rebooted. Sms is working agaon

argh! Can't send text messages

I'm on Orange (UK) and 2 days ago I lost the ability to text one number. I tried deleting the queue of unsent messages and reset the settings within the messaging app. This didn't help and I now can't send any SMS at all, they instantly fail. Annoyingly, they work fine with my T-Mobile Sim. I've tried updating the message centre number with the one given by Orange but it's not worked. I've now done a full wipe and reflashed my ROM and I still can't send messages. Everything else works fine.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Is it something on the carrier side.... Seems to me if it works fine with another sim then it's either a problem with the carrier or maybe you have the wrong apn settings.... But i am not sure that effects text messages
Also this might be a dumb suggestion but maybe try downloading a third party messaging client like chomp

Thanks for the reply, I agree that it's likely to be a network issue, I was just hoping to avoid a long call to customer service!
EDIT: I got them to send me the settings via SMS and everything's back to normal again. Phew!

Can't receive SMS on any rom after full wipe.

Title says about it all. Doesn't matter if I send it to myself, or if someone on Sprint or any other network sends it to me, I can't receive anything. I am able to send, but can only receive in google voice (which I didn't even have installed until this came up).
I've tried stock GB, bugless beast (ICS), as well as CM9. Any thoughts?
have you tried this? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/SMSC_Updates
Have you tried setting google voice to send SMS to the phone? This can be set either through the web version or the app.

Very strange, I had it set in the app, but when I checked on the web version it was unchecked. I just sent a test message from the wife's phone and it worked. Thanks for the suggestion!

[Q] Having trouble sending sms/mms

*Note

So I got nexus 5 yesterday, and cant seem to properly send or receive MMS.
I tried with and without WIFI, and to no avail.
I tried with and without google voice, 3rd party messaging app such as (go sms)
Is there solution to this? I just recently came back to android and im quite confused.
The mms won't get sent regardless of network im on.
I'm having the same problem. I can send them but I am not receiving any.

Did you come from iPhones?
---------- Post added at 01:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:18 PM ----------
I had the same problem coming from my iPhone 5. Its because your number is tied to iMessage. So if you still have your iPhone, go to settings, messages, turn off iMessage. And you should be good.
Actually no, i had my samsung galaxy s2 bricked and had no phone for few month. So my number is not associated with iphone stuff at all :/
Does your APN have the correct MMS settings for your carrier?
Regards,
Dave

Go to:
Settings > More... (under wireless & networks) > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
If there's no APN for Sprint then go find the correct APN details on the web or ask Sprint.
OR (have not tried this method)

These are only options in mobile network :/

Nexus 5 on iWireless (Iowa Wireless) Megatalk Pay-in-advance - Not able to send or receive MMS
Simply took my Nexus 4 SIM card, plugged it into my new Nexus 5.
Default APN settings attached. Wife complains that when she updated to SMS in Hangouts 2.0 on her Nexus 4, her MMS is now broken as well.

Also, I tried using Handcent SMS to see if it was simply a problem with Hangouts 2.0. It didn't work
I tried using the 'smart' settings in MMS setting as well as selecting Iowa Wireless directly and neither worked.
Having the same issue on iWireless. Had customer service screw with my n5 for about an hour last night and they got sending mms working receiving not so much. I have since screwed with it, and sending no longer works.
Anyone else have any luck?

Do you have a nexus 4 around? Try deleting all the APNs you currently have, and creating new ones to match the values that get set on the Nexus 4. I haven't been able to test my MMS so maybe PM me and we can test it out and then post our settings to this thread.

Please see if you guys can get it to work as well

Update:
I added the PIAPicture Messaging APN to match what the Nexus 4 had when it did its "Reset to Default" in the APN settings. I don't understand why the APN 'default' settings over the air would be different between the Jelly Bean Nexus 4 and the KitKat Nexus 5.
Also, Now that the Nexus 4 got the KitKat upgrade, it defaults to the same settings that my Nexus 5 had; and it couldn't send/receive MMS.
I redid the settings in the Nexus 4 to match what I put on my Nexus 5 and it sends/receives MMS fine with the Messaging app (not the Hangouts app)
In summary, there appears to be some issue with the Hangouts app receiving MMS even after changing the APN settings to be correct. I was able to receive 1 MMS, then the rest come in as,
"Touch to download MMS message. Size:115KB. Expires 11/25, 1:23PM."
(the size changes depending on the size of the MMS however, which means it is 'sorta' seeing the MMS)
Whenever I touch the message, it looks like it is starting the download but times out.

MMS issues using Google Messages on WiFi

Anyone else not able to send MMS messages or gifs when connected to WiFi using Google Messages?
I've been using Google Messages and Gboard forever on everyone I've owned but with the S8+, while connected to WiFi, messages just hang. Sent messages always say "sending" and messages sent to me show constantly as downloading. It's not until I toggle WiFi off that the messages come through.

Yea noticed this as well. Had to stick with stock messages.

Totally sucks. I spoke with at&t and they said they have communicated with their Samsung rep and it's a known issue.

I had a weird issue with Google Messages, when I'd send a screenshot to someone, they said it was perfectly clear. However when I was in the messages thread and clicked on the screenshot it came up very blurry. (Sprint version) The original screenshot in Gallery looked fine and it did on the device receiving the message. Kinda strange.
I use signal and haven't had any issues. You sure it's not google related?
I can't send or receive mms while on WiFi calling. Stock message app or Google s message app. Got a ticket in with t-mobile now. I've gone back to factory twice still not working.
I also have this issue. I can confirm as told by an AT&T rep on the phone that it's a known issue apparently . I was told they were looking into it, but no idea when an actual solution is coming.
Glad I'm not the only one.
Yea , all of us are in the same point. It's an issue with the phone not properly handing off the connection from WiFi to data in order to send the MMS message while you're connected to WiFi. We're all hearing from our carriers it's being investigated so let's hope a patch is due sometime soon?

Unable to send/receive MMS when connected to WiFi on Verizon

So I noticed yesterday that I was having an issue with sending or receiving MMS while on WiFi.
I searched online for a solution and the general consensus is to edit network APN settings. The problem though is that APN settings are grayed out and cannot be edited or added.
In order to send or receive MMS, I have to toggle wifi on/off. I have not callee Verizon tech support yet, planning on it and will update this post but I was wondering if anyone else has had similar experience and would like to share their solution.
Thanks
[Update]
The next day after making this post, I called Verizon. The tech support walked me through a reset of settings and asked to reboot the phone. After following her instructions, the problem persisted. She said she would create a ticket number and follow up with their technical supervisor/support and I should hear from her within three day.
Well today after making the report, I woke up with an updated Galaxy App in my notification. It seemed to have been pushed to my phone the night before. I clicked but nothing opened. So I assumed it's a fix for the MMS issue and immediately composed an MMS and voila, the **** works now. Idk what they did but it is working. I suggest calling tech support and have them deal with it if your aon setting is grayed out.

I am having the same issue on AT&T! what sms app are you using? I am using google messages. mms go through as soon as I turn wifi off. fn annoying!
I glad is not only me (it's mean I am not crazy)
Just got my S8plus 2 days ago, replace broken LG V10 and I notice this problem with all samsung and google message apps, but when I install third party messaging app it's working fine
Any suggestions how to fix
Let's be real. Only happens on Google messages. So, software, fixable, not by Samsung and will be in a Wednesday release this week or next. Not worried.
