N64 emulation on XPlay? - Xperia Play Themes and Apps

I have been out of the loop lately. How is N64 emulation on the Xperia Play? What emulator should I use? Is Ocarina of Time perfectly playable without slowdowns?

I recently played OOT all the way through on gingerbread using mupen64plus-ae, that supports analogs. It was 20 fps I think, so pretty much fullspeed, maybe a little bit less in Hyrule field. But since then the emulator has gotten better.
N64oid is faster, but doesn't support analog pads as far as I know, and is no longer in development; it does support analogs on ICS and newer firmwares though.

Thanks so much for the answer.
I run ExtremeKernel with Elite Gamer 2.0. A very clean and unbloated system, purely for gaming.
I have no idea what performance I can expect. But your report is very nice to hear...guess I just have to look into it .

Huh, I suppose I didn't mention that I run stock 2.3.4 de-bloated, with lupus kernel... so yea, with your setup it should run equally as good or better, also counting that emulators have gotten better.

Well about the only games you cant play are the games that need the ram expansion pack like conkers bad furday. Games like banjo kazooie. Or hames made earlier in the n64's life pkay awesomely on the play! I hipe the emus get better because I really do not think it is a hardware problem. Most emus arent exactly optimised for the specific hardware you pkay them on.

[Q] PSX4DROID V2 on Epic 4g :(

So I am having a horrible time with this one on this device I guess. I have DL'ed multiple Bios for the app and currently am sticking with 7502 and 1001 which seem to work for the most part. All my games are slower then the actual trial version or PSX4DROID Lite. I have tested FF7, FF8, FF9, Legend of Dragoon, Einhander, Chrono Cross, and my fav Xenogears and every one runs smoother and way faster with no slowdown on the Lite version but when using the paid version is slow slow slow. I have upped the cpu cycle, and messed with the fps and moved these both around from low to high and no difference in the games. The sound in the Lite version on all these games is bad but the gameplay is so much smoother and overall better, the sound in the paid version is spot on but the games lag. I am using the Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G which should play these np since I hear from so many others it works great but not sure if its due to my phone? or is it something I'm doing wrong. I have searched the wide world of GOOGLE and found nothing to help. I have searched these forums as well and just haven't found any help with this. I really really really wana jam on some Xenogears or finally beat FF9 as I made it all the way to the end and never got to beat it back in the day.
This is my first Post and I would appreciate any and all advice you pros out there have for a noob such as me
Any assistance at all would be great
Nobody uses PSX4DROID V2 on an Epic 4g? Or does not have the same issues with slowdown like I do? I am not rooted and starting to wonder if thats the issue? Please Help
no one here really cares about that emuklator... v2 of psx4droid is slower than the old build. i bought both so i compare them each time theres an update for v2 and so far the old build is better in most ways especially when it comes to fps. the old build is just a lot more smoother especially for games such as ff9 and castlevania son.
I've tried running gta 2 on psx4droid but the cars and the character itself were missing and so it gave more fps (around 20) but now with v2 i can see everything (graphics are improved) but now the FPS fell down to approximately 15-12 but it is playable so i don't mind the update
Using a task killer won't harm so that you can close down extra things to free up memory then try running the game, hopefully it won't lag.
I'm on an evo 4g and I can say that the latest psx v2 make everything crawl. What worked for me was the first version of psx4droid v2 that was released, try searching the web and everything should run smooth, it does for me on the snapdragon so should fly with the hummingbird.
I also noticed that if u use app2sd it will affect the emulator since u are trying to run the game off your sd card like on my evo. So give it a try and all should be good.
Also I would stick with 1001 bios since that is what the focus of the port is.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
same issue with me mate, running stock and FF tactics will fluctuate in speeds, mostly on the slower side
I have the same problem on my x, I've given up with it.
I too get FPS problems with this crappy emulator on my DHD. I get about 35FPS in GT2 but it's still too laggy, this is on v2. v1.1 of PSX4DROID runs much much better.
Won't have to wait much longer to play PS1 games on Android

[NEWS]Nintendo DS on Android

I couldn't help posting this because i became happy when i read it...
Tiger Lab apps(nds demo emulator)
[Only open for limited days]
1. VERY EARLY PROTOTYPE VERSION(BETA) FOR DEMO ONLY
2. It is very very slow so you shall not expect to play NDS game with this emulator.
3. It is used to DEMO that NDS game can be played on android phone
It is shown that NDS WILL be played some days on android phone, maybe 2012 or later
WHAT IS NEXT WORK (Huge efforts)
1. More powerful phones
2. Dynarec CPU simulation
3. GPU simualtion improvement for speed greatly.
4. Hareware render (eg, OpenGL ES)
5. FPU. Since NDS need lots of float calculation. FPU can improvement performance greatly. Later ARM will have FPU in feature
If you do not have a high-end phone, do not try NDS game. Even if you have a high-end phone, just try some small games(none 3D) but it is also quite slow.
How to demo (not play) NDS game
1. Put your nds ROM files to /roms/nds folder in sdcard.
Note. zip nds rom is not supported, you shall extract them to be *.nds files
2. Launch TigerNDS which will load those NDS roms in game list
3. Select one game and play
It is just DEMO and speed is very very very very slow even on high-end phones. You shall not expect to play nds game with the emulator.

Its amazing what a skilled developer can make and pretty soon I'm sure we'll see a app for everything and this is just one more off the list. I can't wait to see how they manage using both screens but im sure it'll be awesome!
Good job devs! Keep it up!

Might work well for the Kyocera Echo
This looks promising!
I know it's just a proof of concept currently, but why are they saying it would need new devices to run well? It seems like, since the DS and our devices are both ARM based, with some obvious modifications to run arm code natively and not emulated, you could get it running pretty well. At least that's what I had gathered from previous discussions about it.

In order to emulate a nintendo DS your phone needs to have twice the power. But to be honest I never thought the DS was too powerful... So I bet once the emulator is out of alpha it should run fine on a galaxy S. But who knows were still waiting for Zodttd to finish the N64 emulator
Wow! This would be awesome!! I miss Mario Bros on my phone
I tried on HD2, and yes is very very very slow, but it works.

Of course, I am familiar with emulators and how, as a rule of thumb, your device should be 10 times more powerful to expect any sort of decent emulation. I'm just saying, maybe they can avoid emulating certain things and run native ARM DS code natively, vastly speeding it up. It would be REALLY hard though, requiring vast knowledge of ARM assembly from what I've heard. Meh, Zodttd. He should stick to iPhone imo. Android will probably get some decent open source emulators soon enough.

decent emulation takes about 5-10 times the power to emulate
and ive heard that emulating the DS is extremely difficult
as for zod i honestly doubt he is still working on that project paul seems to be the one that is on top of the project now
I'll try it out with my Atrix tonight, maybe post a youtube video. Is there a standard game we are using?
I've been trying to run a .nds file on this. The ROM is Pokemon Platinum (128mb). It's on /roms/nds and shows up in the app, however when I click on it it flashes to a black screen then goes back to the rom selection screen.

LOL!!!! That's hilarious! But that might be true too.
Sighh..
I remember the time when psp can emulate ds rom even though the frame rate per second was really low! (Average 17fps!)
I stopped using handhelds after the Gameboy Advance.. besides, it feels like all these games are the same rehash with little story change and somewhat better graphics.. there doesn't seem to be any new creative things being done in the handheld market.. so I say why bother killing your phone trying to emulate the NDS..
with that in mind, we are looking at quad-core phones by the end of 2012 for SURE, and dual-core by fall 2011 I hope, so just wait a few more months haha.
my bigger concern about emulation and games on the Android is multitouch.. even my Desire on 2.3.3 (CM7) has issues where multitouch fails, rendering even most old games unplayable (how the hell can I run and jump in Mario at the same time like the real gamepad allows.. if we wanna improve the quality of gameplay on our phones, we should push the manufacturers for better hardware that'll allow coders to provide for better multitouch capability.
just my 2 cents..
I wouldn't worry about that, bluetooth gamepads are on the way.
I use a Wiimote with classic controller for emulators at the moment.
NDS emulation can be slow even on PC, so don't expect phones to run games playable
alienhunt: more like spring 2011 for dual core.
i'll be getting a tegra2 phone in the mail next week.

Can somebody make better explanation? How high end should devices be? Would current devices (Desire, Galaxy S) be enough or do we need to wait for dual core?
Bluetooth gamepads are nice, but i think they are more like "i can do that" than really being usable. Games on the phones are meant to be played anywhere. And i don't want to carry a wiimote around with me just to play games on my phone.
I have tried several emulators on my HD2 and games are quite playable despite HD2's limit of maximum 2 touch points. Biggest problem is the feedback of the controls. You cannot feel controls, which means you can easily miss it.
I think best on screen controls would be ones that are fully customizable. Ability to move and resize controls to match your device, finger size and playing position would be killer feature.

[LIST] Emulators Compatibility List

I think that we should list some emulators (and details about them) that we have tested and found to be compatible/incompatible with the sensation, so that we don't waste time downloading and troubleshooting apps that don't work.
Here are a few that I found to be compatible/incompatible
FPSe-Somewhat Compatible (Tested with Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere, which plays well. Armored Core will go to the menu, but will not load into a game)
N64oid-Compatible (Tested with Goldeneye 007 and Ocarina Of Time, both of which ran perfectly)
GameBoid-Compatible (tested with MegaMan and Pokemon Fire red, both of which ran perfectly)
PSX4Droid-Incompatible (when a ROM is selected, it will go to a black screen, but the ROM will not load)
Ataroid, Gameboid, Gearoid, Gensoid, N64oid, Nesoid, Snesoid, FPse, Frodo C64, ScummVM, psx4droid v2 - all compatible and work great.
Only psx4droid v3 doesn't seem to work whereas v2 works. However psx4droid runs significantly worse than FPse (at least for me and with the games I play) so I don't see a reason for using it
ScummVM ist just awesome. Spent the last couple of days playing through Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3
I tried N64oid to play Goldeneye but it would not go pass the intro. sound would skip and just stop playing and dump me back to the rom list.
perhaps I just got a bunk rom since it's working on yours... or maybe something wrong with my copy of N64oid...
Yes Goldeneye is working pretty well, check your ROM here
Nesoid is the only one that refused working for me, Kupfel could you tell me whay version you are using??
what version of N64oid are you guys running?
I'm running v1.1.4 and I just tried GoldenEye rom from 3 different places and all three does the same thing... just freezes at the intro and kicks me back to rom list.
thanks.
Same N64oid version, but Goldeneye has always been working for me, it was already working with N64oid first release. You must have gotten 3 corrupted iso
N64oid - goldeneye works ok, slight lag but more Importantly I find it extremely difficult to play using touch screen controls. The mariokart and Mario world both work perfectly.
Sent from my nokia 3210
as for Goldeneye, don't let it play the very first video, press start to start the game or it may stop working during the video.
I asked the dev (through one of his testers) if it could be possible to have the other landscape available, thus having the volumes buttons at the top of the Sensation, not at the bottom, like a shoulder R1/R2 button. Set it as Z trigger and Goldeneye becomes really playable, as well as every game where you have to shoot
EDIT: stupid from me, the reverse landscape is avaliable for Android 2.3, I haven't checked this option since I stopped playing on my HD2 froyo to the Sensation ^^

What problem do you have with nesoid? I have version 2.5.0 and played through Megaman 1,2,3 and Metroid without any problems whatsoever.
Did any of you guys try aDosBox or AnDOSBox yet? judging by the reviews it's running perfectly on much slower phones than the sensation
and yet any game I tried so far isn't even close to playable. Just really really really slow. 5 FPS or sth.
just tried NESoid v2.5 and it's working fine.
played me some ninja gaiden.
I've been playing the SNES trilogy version... NES version is so much superior.
better control layout, better soundtrack, harder game play, and overall feels snappier.
only bad thing is for some reason on the rom I got the opening scene is not included... guess I'm keeping the SNES version around just for that.
anyway, tried 1942 on it as well. works flawless.
I gave up on the N64oid. installed/uninstalled so many times... not to mention time spent hunting down roms, different versions of the N64oid apk.
only game I want from N64 was Golden Eye but can't even play the intro.
kinda ruins the experience.
so, it's off the list for now. thanks for the help and suggestions though.
anyway, for the person that is having problems with NESoid, try version 2.5 as the poster above me have suggested. it works really well.
p.s. since we are trying to compile a list, I can confirm FPSE works great for PSX(much better then PSX4Droid), and Snes9x EX works great for the Snes and is available free on the market.
so psx4roid isn't working..and i though i had a problem with my device xD
what good playstation emulators can you recommend?

Fpse of course, the best around, updated about every week since the release and highly compatible. And much more is to come!
Thanks for the 2 guys who told me for NESoid working version
N64oid will be updated with a completly new build and core, much more compatible games are to come, more speed too.
And don't waste time looking for N64oid builds since the official version is free on SlideMe (that's where the dev had to place it after all his great emus were deleted from the market by google...)
n64oid issues? i have not had a single problem, playing mario64, mario kart64, zelda OoT, rogue squadron, starfox64, blast corps and goldeneye at full speeds.
N64oid Ver. 1.1 only issue is minor lag during cutscenes, but most are skippable
Every time i try to download fpse, it says that is incompatible with sensation ?!?!?
Is there some special version that you guys are using, or i just need to google harder ?
how about you just frickin' buy it from the market?

fpse is still very much in the market and most definitely compatible with sensation:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.emulator.fpse
all of yongzh's emus (all those *oid emus) can be found here for free:
http://slideme.org/applications?text=yongzh
(he uploaded then there himself after his apps were kicked from the market)
N64oid 2.0 has just been out, it's on sale on SlideMe market now!
I've just bought it, now Zelda Occarina of time is smooth with no frameskip at all (better to set it to 3 to be sure there won't be some short lags sometimes)
Nice!!
Don't smack me please! But any chance we will ever see ps2 emulators for sensation? Is this even possible?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
nah, PS2 isn't possible. That would require a much faster CPU

[Q] Emulator and CM issues

Basically, I'm upgrading from a Galaxy Prevail (CM7), that worked amazingly well for emulators up to SNES (never trusted passing that), to the Skyrocket. Having a bit of trouble finding exactly what I need, and run into a few bumps.
Simply put, I plan on using this phone like a console when I'm away from home. NES, SNES, Gameboy, Genesis, ect ect. Thus I went for the i727 for it's power, and good selection of custom roms, ect.
Issues so far...
CM7 - Emulators work great (yongz emulators mainly), things like youtube n such kinda lag
CM9 - Emulators lag more than they should considering the phone specs, everything else lovely.
CM10 SuperLite - My favorite rom by far, but same emulator issues.
It's on CM7 atm, not too keen on it after trying ICS and JB. I've looked everywhere for anyone that might have my issues on this paticular phone and either come up with people on stock gb 2.3, OR something not related to this phone (Xperia play, ect)
Just wondering if anyone using an i727, has it up to ICS/JB and has emulators running SMOOTHLY.
Also I know, some games on higher end platforms don't emulate well (AFAIK) on any phone (Goldeneye sadly), but N64, NeoGeo are two I've had terrible luck with, and PS1 I would like to have working if possible.
The main bunch I'm interested in as follows, other system emus I'd also be interested in: (WiiMote/PS3 support HUGE plus)
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
GBA
GameGear/SMS
Genesis/MegaDrive
N64
PS1
NeoGeo (or MAME)
maybe some A7800?
Even paid apps would be an option for me, so long as it does the job well.
Tweak suggestions a plus, preferably not OC'ing.
Thanks if you've read this far, hopefully I'm not the only i727 owner/modder who has an addiction to the classics

these all support wiimote and classic controller with wiimote app from playstore if you need links pm me

Yea I noticed n64oid actually done better on ICS/JB than it did in GB. I was using Goldeneye as the test, but neither ran it too well, but 4.x done better. Probably because he still updates it, not sure. The others I think were targeted for GB and thus have issues with 4.x.
I'm going back up to the CM10SL rom, since CM7 has been makin the phone run hot if I do anything. Probably a memory management thing...
Looks like all the XXXX.emu apps run great under JB on the Sky, only issue is the menu gui flickers and shows the previous menu image under the current menu if nothing is pressed...
Porta-console side of my sky is looking quite promising!

M8 with game emulators

Added: Besides radio reception, I always wonder about this subject with new devices and chipsets, so decided to test myself and not wait.
I have been testing game emulators with the M8, since with the exception of Dolphin, all others are CPU heavy (Dolphin is heavy on GPU and CPU). MAME games like Dead or Alive ++, Rival Schools and Street Fighter EX2 are good examples that really test how powerful the CPU is, since the 3D is CPU emulated.
Though obvious Android 3D games will be faster on the M8 (S801) than the S4, MAME 3D games were just as choppy on the M8 as the S600 and S800. This kind of surprised me since expected some improvement over the S600. So far, the only chipset that MAME plays as smooth as a laptop or PC is the A7 chipset. It plays Dead or Alive, etc all smoothly. I appreciate that is two different platforms, but the app devs state both are compiled similarly to the point of the platforms not making a difference.
A7 though is a tangent to Android, but a point that it is possible for the full MAME .139 and 3D games to play smooth on a portable device. I expect the S5 will be similar to the M8 in spite of the higher clock. The 5420 Note 2014 is faster with MAME than the M8, but still not arcade smooth like the iPad Air with A7.
Perhaps the 64bit chips later this year will be the point for par. N64 and PSP were also no better framerates than the S4, but the Note 2014 is the current emulator speed leader so far for Android.
Just thought I would post this for the old school game emulator fans out there. All five of us?
I do a lot of emulating, but only for ps1 games really. All the other systems I still have and occasionally use. Gameboy color games are an exception, but for n64 and up I play them on the real deal >

EDIT: I got GBC A.D. to work just by copying the apk out of /data/app on my S4 and then moving it to my M8. Works fine. I wonder why the play store wouldn't let me have it..
I was using GBC A.D. to play all my old game boy color games but for some reason it won't work on the M8. I tried the xposed module to submit normal ppi density to the play store and that still didn't work.. I was getting so far in Crystal version too.. Wah. Anybody know an emulator that will play the same GBC rom and save file?
Any update?
