Basically, I'm upgrading from a Galaxy Prevail (CM7), that worked amazingly well for emulators up to SNES (never trusted passing that), to the Skyrocket. Having a bit of trouble finding exactly what I need, and run into a few bumps.
Simply put, I plan on using this phone like a console when I'm away from home. NES, SNES, Gameboy, Genesis, ect ect. Thus I went for the i727 for it's power, and good selection of custom roms, ect.
Issues so far...
CM7 - Emulators work great (yongz emulators mainly), things like youtube n such kinda lag
CM9 - Emulators lag more than they should considering the phone specs, everything else lovely.
CM10 SuperLite - My favorite rom by far, but same emulator issues.
It's on CM7 atm, not too keen on it after trying ICS and JB. I've looked everywhere for anyone that might have my issues on this paticular phone and either come up with people on stock gb 2.3, OR something not related to this phone (Xperia play, ect)
Just wondering if anyone using an i727, has it up to ICS/JB and has emulators running SMOOTHLY.
Also I know, some games on higher end platforms don't emulate well (AFAIK) on any phone (Goldeneye sadly), but N64, NeoGeo are two I've had terrible luck with, and PS1 I would like to have working if possible.
The main bunch I'm interested in as follows, other system emus I'd also be interested in: (WiiMote/PS3 support HUGE plus)
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
GBA
GameGear/SMS
Genesis/MegaDrive
N64
PS1
NeoGeo (or MAME)
maybe some A7800?
Even paid apps would be an option for me, so long as it does the job well.
Tweak suggestions a plus, preferably not OC'ing.
Thanks if you've read this far, hopefully I'm not the only i727 owner/modder who has an addiction to the classics

i use n64oid and works flawless if you can find the right framerate etc combo on certain games plus wiimote suppote i use nes. emu from market by robert works without an issue. i also use his gbc. emu as well purchased but worth it for playstation i use an outdated psx4droid file tbat has always work but has almost an invisible lag
these all support wiimote and classic controller with wiimote app from playstore if you need links pm me

Yea I noticed n64oid actually done better on ICS/JB than it did in GB. I was using Goldeneye as the test, but neither ran it too well, but 4.x done better. Probably because he still updates it, not sure. The others I think were targeted for GB and thus have issues with 4.x.
I'm going back up to the CM10SL rom, since CM7 has been makin the phone run hot if I do anything. Probably a memory management thing...
Looks like all the XXXX.emu apps run great under JB on the Sky, only issue is the menu gui flickers and shows the previous menu image under the current menu if nothing is pressed...
Porta-console side of my sky is looking quite promising!

Wow this phone is fast! N64 and PS1 at full fps with sound! Almost kind of boring when you don't have to tweak a ton of settings just to make the roms playable
I've been into emulation on every device I've owned, so its how I benchmark the relative performance from one device to the next. Coming from a N900, this G2X blows it out of the water. My N900 could play SNES at full fps but turning the sound on would slow it down. The N900 could play N64 and PS1 but they were really slow at ~10fps skipping at least two or three frames without sound.
So N64 and PS1 emulators were the best I had to throw a the phone and it handles it no problem. I'd like to see what the phone can really do. Its starting to feel like this phone might be pretty close to my laptop (older 2Ghz C2D) in emulation performance; blows my mind to even think that. Is there a PS2 emulator anywhere? I read a rumor that said Nvidia might put out a PS2 emulator but I wasn't sure how true that was. I'm assuming if Nvidia puts the emulator out then it would be optimized for Tegra2 and actually use both CPU cores and the graphics chip so the games might actually run OK-ish.
If not, what is everyone else using to push the phone? I don't really care about quadrant benchmarks or anything like that.
Oh BTW, this is my first Android device so excuse the noobness of me not knowing what software exists

haha yeah its my first I've been reading about Android since it was announced and I've played with different versions on emulators and I actually had my N900 dual booting Froyo, but this is my first actual Android device. I'm a little bit of a software nerd so I like trying out different OS's. Meego, Maemo, WebOS, Palm, WinMo CE 6 and 5, Android 1.5-2.3; I've spent some time with all of them. I even lurked for a while before my join date. Not too much of a noob in general, just with the world of 3rd party software for Android.
So anyway, back on topic. Does a PS2 emulator exist for Android? What's everyone running to test out their new G2X?

And everyone should have to walk to school...five miles, through the snow, up hill...both ways.
But anyway, It really is an amazing device...much more powerful than the netbook I bought just last year. But then again, I remember just how crazy fast my home built 50MHz 486 with 512 Kb of RAM was. Amazing time to be alive...
Damn, I feel old...
No PS2 Emulator out for Android yet.
As a general rule it takes around 4 or 5 times the processing power to correctly emulate a system (give or take). The PS2 has a 128bit processor running at 300MHz with multiple coprocessors. I think we are getting close but not quite there.
Yeah I realize the G2x won't run PS2 perfectly, especially if its run completely off the CPU it might not run at all. That's why I was hoping there was more to the Nvidia PS2 emulator rumor...
Oh well, it's not like I wont have fun playing with N64 and PS1, its just too easy.
Just like older phones with SNES and other emulators, you have frame skipping and stuff to help the frame rate.
I think the PS2 is overkill but whatever.
I just think its funny that Sony is coming out with a new PSP Android phone to run PS1 games that we can already do for free using our own backups.

I've only tried N64oid and FPse, both work really well for me so far. I'm just using the onscreen controls right now. I tried to get the accelerometer working for the left dpad/stick but I still have some tweaking to do to get it the way I like it. Still, the accelerometer doesn't feel natural with these games, they weren't really designed to be controlled that way.
Id like to get one of those iControlpads, its bluetooth so it should work. It's just kinda of pricy so I'll wait to hear of other people using it with a G2X first.
speaking of slide out gamepads, I'm surprised something like This hast come out yet. It would be perfect for me.
Yea i like the IcontrolPad as well, but like you said its a bit expensive.
If you don't mind not being able to hold the phone this one is great
http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Retro-Wireless-Controller-Nintendo/dp/B001ULJGDU
Its the Wii retro controller with bluetooth built in, no nunchuck needed. People have used it with Blueputdroid.
I figure I can just plug the Micro HDMI into the TV and USB for power with this controller and have portable classic gaming
Nice! If anyone gets that bluetooth remote working let me know please...I would love to use some emulators using hdmi and the BT controller!
I dont have any on my phone yet cause I really dont like playing on the touchscreen...but with the controller would be sweet!

so far until someone works on the drivers or the bluputdroid dev supports the phone its not going to happen on a stock G2x rom. Ive seen it does work on CM7 roms however I haven't tried myself.
I'm half tempted to try a nightly but i like having a stable phone.
my controller should be here any day so if HDMI out is working on CM7 I will probably give it a try
I currently use a one handed bluetooth gamepad. It works with Fpse, Psx4droid, N64oid, Gameboid, Snesoid and Gensoid. Plus i have the belt clip kickstand. I just sit back on the bus or train to work and play FF7, Super Smash Brothers, Tekken Advanced, Killer Instinct and of course Sonic.

Go to the android market and download them.
You should be able to find all but the n64, emulator which should be re released soon.
I think that we should list some emulators (and details about them) that we have tested and found to be compatible/incompatible with the sensation, so that we don't waste time downloading and troubleshooting apps that don't work.
Here are a few that I found to be compatible/incompatible
FPSe-Somewhat Compatible (Tested with Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere, which plays well. Armored Core will go to the menu, but will not load into a game)
N64oid-Compatible (Tested with Goldeneye 007 and Ocarina Of Time, both of which ran perfectly)
GameBoid-Compatible (tested with MegaMan and Pokemon Fire red, both of which ran perfectly)
PSX4Droid-Incompatible (when a ROM is selected, it will go to a black screen, but the ROM will not load)
Ataroid, Gameboid, Gearoid, Gensoid, N64oid, Nesoid, Snesoid, FPse, Frodo C64, ScummVM, psx4droid v2 - all compatible and work great.
Only psx4droid v3 doesn't seem to work whereas v2 works. However psx4droid runs significantly worse than FPse (at least for me and with the games I play) so I don't see a reason for using it
ScummVM ist just awesome. Spent the last couple of days playing through Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3
I tried N64oid to play Goldeneye but it would not go pass the intro. sound would skip and just stop playing and dump me back to the rom list.
perhaps I just got a bunk rom since it's working on yours... or maybe something wrong with my copy of N64oid...
Yes Goldeneye is working pretty well, check your ROM here
Nesoid is the only one that refused working for me, Kupfel could you tell me whay version you are using??
what version of N64oid are you guys running?
I'm running v1.1.4 and I just tried GoldenEye rom from 3 different places and all three does the same thing... just freezes at the intro and kicks me back to rom list.
thanks.
Same N64oid version, but Goldeneye has always been working for me, it was already working with N64oid first release. You must have gotten 3 corrupted iso
N64oid - goldeneye works ok, slight lag but more Importantly I find it extremely difficult to play using touch screen controls. The mariokart and Mario world both work perfectly.
Sent from my nokia 3210
as for Goldeneye, don't let it play the very first video, press start to start the game or it may stop working during the video.
I asked the dev (through one of his testers) if it could be possible to have the other landscape available, thus having the volumes buttons at the top of the Sensation, not at the bottom, like a shoulder R1/R2 button. Set it as Z trigger and Goldeneye becomes really playable, as well as every game where you have to shoot
EDIT: stupid from me, the reverse landscape is avaliable for Android 2.3, I haven't checked this option since I stopped playing on my HD2 froyo to the Sensation ^^

What problem do you have with nesoid? I have version 2.5.0 and played through Megaman 1,2,3 and Metroid without any problems whatsoever.
Did any of you guys try aDosBox or AnDOSBox yet? judging by the reviews it's running perfectly on much slower phones than the sensation
and yet any game I tried so far isn't even close to playable. Just really really really slow. 5 FPS or sth.
just tried NESoid v2.5 and it's working fine.
played me some ninja gaiden.
I've been playing the SNES trilogy version... NES version is so much superior.
better control layout, better soundtrack, harder game play, and overall feels snappier.
only bad thing is for some reason on the rom I got the opening scene is not included... guess I'm keeping the SNES version around just for that.
anyway, tried 1942 on it as well. works flawless.
I gave up on the N64oid. installed/uninstalled so many times... not to mention time spent hunting down roms, different versions of the N64oid apk.
only game I want from N64 was Golden Eye but can't even play the intro.
kinda ruins the experience.
so, it's off the list for now. thanks for the help and suggestions though.
anyway, for the person that is having problems with NESoid, try version 2.5 as the poster above me have suggested. it works really well.
p.s. since we are trying to compile a list, I can confirm FPSE works great for PSX(much better then PSX4Droid), and Snes9x EX works great for the Snes and is available free on the market.
so psx4roid isn't working..and i though i had a problem with my device xD
what good playstation emulators can you recommend?

Fpse of course, the best around, updated about every week since the release and highly compatible. And much more is to come!
Thanks for the 2 guys who told me for NESoid working version
N64oid will be updated with a completly new build and core, much more compatible games are to come, more speed too.
And don't waste time looking for N64oid builds since the official version is free on SlideMe (that's where the dev had to place it after all his great emus were deleted from the market by google...)
n64oid issues? i have not had a single problem, playing mario64, mario kart64, zelda OoT, rogue squadron, starfox64, blast corps and goldeneye at full speeds.
N64oid Ver. 1.1 only issue is minor lag during cutscenes, but most are skippable
Every time i try to download fpse, it says that is incompatible with sensation ?!?!?
Is there some special version that you guys are using, or i just need to google harder ?
how about you just frickin' buy it from the market?

fpse is still very much in the market and most definitely compatible with sensation:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.emulator.fpse
all of yongzh's emus (all those *oid emus) can be found here for free:
http://slideme.org/applications?text=yongzh
(he uploaded then there himself after his apps were kicked from the market)
N64oid 2.0 has just been out, it's on sale on SlideMe market now!
I've just bought it, now Zelda Occarina of time is smooth with no frameskip at all (better to set it to 3 to be sure there won't be some short lags sometimes)
Nice!!
Don't smack me please! But any chance we will ever see ps2 emulators for sensation? Is this even possible?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
nah, PS2 isn't possible. That would require a much faster CPU
Simple as is, are there any emulators for the Charge? I'd assume with these specs we would at the very least be seeing a flawless NES emulator, SNES might be possible and N64 just doesn't seem doable. Let me know if you could do it and if so, how. Thanks!
Theres emulators for everything, NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, N64, PSX, and even NDS. Good luck finding them though since Google took them off the Market a while back. Go check out the Slide-Me Market, thats where they reside now. nesoid, snesoid, gensoid, n64oid, etc
Incredible! I honestly would not expect a phone like this to run N64 so well, my PSP can't run it that well haha, aside from the insane lag it gets when you attempt to press home and task kill it, it's pretty dam good.
SNES and NES are also impressive but not nearly as much as n64, and none of them require root access? WOW! Thanks a lot for the help!

Hi guys... i'm having lots of problems when trying to play my favourite games from the past using different emulators with the Samsung Infuse 4g all the stuff i'm complaining about has been tried both under the original Infuse rom and with the adapted CM7 mod from LinuxBozo.
I know how the emulation stuff works... Although i've been using android for just one month up to now, i'm not a complete noob.
I already downloaded all of the apks and BIOSes needed for the platforms i'm trying to emulate.
At the moment i've only been able to play with SNESoid and GBCoid. Pretty boring though.
In all the cases mentioned i've been able to run the games using the same BIOSes and ROMs on my PC, although with different Emulators and HW ( just to point out -_-' )
I want to play GBA games but both Mojo GBA and GameBoid GBA emulators crash as i attempt loading any .gba rom i have.
Neither N64oid nor Mupen64 recognize any 7zip, zip or even .z64 rom downloaded from known rom sites (the same suggested in the different tuts i read).
Neodroid loads the roms, recognizes them, shows me the embedded thumbnails but fails to load any damn rom.
I bought the infuse specifically for the wide 5" screen and with the purpose of using it to play games during the 2 hours witch separate my school from my home.
I can accept the fact USB reading features weren't implemented on the Infuse, but not being able to play NeoGeo, GBA and N64 is giving me some buyer's remorse.
My Nokia was able to play GBA...that's not acceptable.
Hope to get some advice.
What versions of the emulators are you using? With Gameboid Lite and N64oid, I have no problems playing GBA games and .zip N64 roms on any ROM (stock/CM7/MIUI/GB/etc.). Do you have this issue on a clean flash (ie. GTG Ultimate Unbrick, don't install anything else, don't restore any data, etc.)?
The phone's rom isn't clean anymore but these problems keep happening since the beginning (These emulators were the first thing I installed right after google applications)
I changed version for the psx4droid and it's now working
I don't know what gameboid version i currently run...it's not shown...not even in the about tab. I just want to play gba but i can't find it on the market...looks the same for lots of other useful stuff like the ROM grabber...
The same for what concerns n64oid...i just couldn't find it and tried different apk found around the internet... tomorrow as the post office opens i'm going to charge my pre-paid card in order to give N64 Arcade a try... it's the only n64 emulator I can find on the market.
Btw... maybe i'll save those 0,99 bucks and avoid the risk of getting stuck in the same situation... may you tell me what n64oid and gameboid lite versions are you runnin?

I took some time to answer but yeah they work! Thanks!
I have been out of the loop lately. How is N64 emulation on the Xperia Play? What emulator should I use? Is Ocarina of Time perfectly playable without slowdowns?
I recently played OOT all the way through on gingerbread using mupen64plus-ae, that supports analogs. It was 20 fps I think, so pretty much fullspeed, maybe a little bit less in Hyrule field. But since then the emulator has gotten better.
N64oid is faster, but doesn't support analog pads as far as I know, and is no longer in development; it does support analogs on ICS and newer firmwares though.
Thanks so much for the answer.
I run ExtremeKernel with Elite Gamer 2.0. A very clean and unbloated system, purely for gaming.
I have no idea what performance I can expect. But your report is very nice to hear...guess I just have to look into it .
Huh, I suppose I didn't mention that I run stock 2.3.4 de-bloated, with lupus kernel... so yea, with your setup it should run equally as good or better, also counting that emulators have gotten better.
Well about the only games you cant play are the games that need the ram expansion pack like conkers bad furday. Games like banjo kazooie. Or hames made earlier in the n64's life pkay awesomely on the play! I hipe the emus get better because I really do not think it is a hardware problem. Most emus arent exactly optimised for the specific hardware you pkay them on.
