Help - what's in a name? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a droid Maxx (that's the model number when I go to "settings" - "about phone") specifically, XT1080.
Is this the same as the ultra, or merely very similar?
I'm trying to determine if I need to keep looking for another forum or if I'm already in the right place.
Is this where I should be if I have a Maxx, or is there somewhere better?
Thanks.

Hey, welcome to the forums! Yes, Ultra and Maxx are exactly the same. The only SOFTWARE differences are the phones say either ULTRA or MAXX. Hardware is exactly the same, really only the build of the device jtself is the biggest difference. The Maxx is XT1080m, by the way, but it doesn't matter really.

The only difference is size of the battery and that the Maxx has wireless charging, the Ultra does not.

And the Maxx has 32GB total raw memory, the Ultra 16GB. So, aside from battery, memory and charging, the entire hardware package is identical.

Awesome, thanks to all for your warm welcome, looking forward to exploring this area of XDA, in the past I've spent time mainly in the nexus one, lg g2 (nightmare), galaxy nexus, and note3 forums.
The Maxx is a complimentary device in my arsenal, and have been very pleasantly surprised by its power, speed, and subtle simplicity. (Really though, no torch option by default?)

The torch(flashlight?) has a default on/off switch on the 5.0 Ghost ROM that runs on the Maxx

thx, now another question i was unable to answer by searching...
If I cannot unlock my bootloader through Motorola (used their tool to check, but my device is not eligible) can i still unlock?
I have a Verizon Droid Maxx, and it is NOT a Dev Edition.
If so what's my best route?
THanks

I'm getting worried that I won't be getting root on this device.
I feel it could definitely benefit by removing a brunch of the stock crap apps... titanium backup... Servers... Every good app needs root it seems....
Again, if there's a FAQ on this device I'm missing please link me there, I'm just not finding the info that is normally documented for devices.
Thanks.

Dead Pixel... Verizon Return?

Hi guys. I just realized my shiny new Galaxy S3 I pre-ordered and received a few days ago from Verizon has a dead pixel (or maybe a few in a cluster, it's hard to tell if it's more than one). Since it's within 14 days of receiving the phone, I should be able to return it for a new handset, correct?
Now that I've seen it, it will surely bother me.

Alright. I believe tomorrow is the date they're supposed to get actual phones in-store, so I figure I can do it then.
Since it's a pre-order, do you think just my order confirmation sheet and original packaging and such would be enough for them?
I've always had bad luck with getting replacements, even when they're clearly hardware defects that are no fault of my own.

To trade or not to trade- insight needed!

Hello everyone, been reading these forums.for a while now. . Recently registered. I have a question you all might be able to help me out on. I've been having fun flashing roms left and right since the unlocking of the bootloader, love this phone. Screen, removable battery, speed, eveverything. Only downfall is my signal issues. Flashed new modem, tried just about everything, still everyone is choppy and.I'm dropping calls. Also been informed people have tried calling me with my phone not ringing. Coming from a razr maxx and before that OG razr, then droid x. My question to all is I have a friend who's willing to trade his razr maxx limited edition (red and black kevlar) and 100$, for my s3. What do you guys think? Stick with the s3? Wait for official JB? Hold out for Razr HD? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Personally, I'd rather have the GS3. But if strong signal & battery life are your 2 number 1 features, then maybe the maxx is better. You should be able to do better than $100 cash in the trade.
You sure it's not that your S3 is defective? If you have access to another S3, maybe try it in the area you use your S3 most often.

I second this.
I'd Odin back to 100% stock/bloated and run it for a little see if the connectivity issue is resolved. If not bring it to verizon and tell them to fix it/replace it. I wouldn't take a step backwards to a Razr Maxx or no Maxx.... ick. hehe

I agree I think I would be extremely disappointed going to the Razr Maxx from the S3...I would think that it would be defective and flashing back to stock via odin, or having Verizon replace it for you would fix the problem...I think your best bet is to see if you can get better service with your S3 first before making a decision some might say your bound to regret.

My mother also has the SGS3, coming from an HTC rezound and is experiencing the same problems call quality/signal strength. Must just be a weaker radio in the samsung devices. All of my motorola devices were flawless when it came to not dropping a call.

And is 4G coverage where you are good? Coming from a RAZR Max, I definitely prefer gs3.

Thanks guys, I LOL'ed at the iphone downgrade. As for the previous questions. The 4g in my area is pretty decent. With the maxx, I was always connected, but more importantly I never dropped a call. I am going to odin back to stock and give it a go for a bit. Ill keep you posted however, the question remains. . . If I continue to have problems, what do I do? I really don't want a Factory refurb. Idk, maybe I'll try dumping it off to someone on CL.

If the MAXX is the red and black employee edition, double check to make sure it can be transferred to another person. There was some fine print attached to the employee edition razors.

A lot of things should be and probably will be better than the RAZR HD with the X. But after all your current isn't that bad though other brand owners will tell u it's rubbish Not going to get the option in the UK

I don't think I would trade my MAXX HD in right now, but I can tell you I hope some of the devs are able to port the firmware over. While I doubt I would use touchless controls, the new notification system is something I can see myself using a lot.
i guess two questions pop into my head...why would you want to, and why should they?
If you complain enough you *might* be able to get a alternate device swap for it but it would be rough. If you have an unlocked bootloader on your HD you are giving that up as the Moto X on Verizon does not have an unlocked bootloader. The dev version will though.
I guess the way I look at it is the Razr HD will eventually get 4.2.2 or 4.3 and if I cant wait i will just enjoy CyanogenMod until they do. Now if you have a regular Razr HD and not the MAXX and you have a locked bootloader or dont care about locked bootloaders then go for the X. Just complain enough and they will probably let you switch. I would wait a month though after its released to try as you dont get a new X or any new device as you only get refurbs. Have to give time for refurbs to show up in order for them to think about switching you.
I complained alot and they kept asking me to send my phone for repair. After three sends, I gave up, unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom rom. No more over heating issues now.

Anyone know when we're getting 4.4.2?

Any idea when we'll be getting the 4.4.2 update? I'm sick of exchange not working and USB otg function being broken. If these problems were fixed this phone would be more bearable not having root.
If anyone has news on this it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, was hoping maybe someone has heard something. The moto x and g both have 4.4.2 so our droid lineup is left awaiting the update
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium
For the last two OTAs, the Droids didn't see a soak test until 5 to 6 weeks after the first X received the OTA, and definitely after all of the US carriers had the OTA. Verizon and AT&T Moto X phones still don't have the OTA, and it's only been a couple of weeks since the unlocked X got 4.4.2, so I'd just relax until the second week of March or so, if history repeats itself.
The G never had 4.4 - it went from 4.3 to 4.4.2, probably because Moto started working on the update after 4.4.2 was released. But, really, the X and the G are Moto's flagship phones. I think the Droids will always lag those two for updates.

There have been changelogs posted. I think that we can look at the Moto X changelog for 4.4.2 to see what the Droids might get from 4.4.2. Not much - mostly bug fixes (battery life problems, exchange mail sync problems I think.)
4.4 changes were mostly internal stuff. BT 4.0 and BT LE devices are now supported. Emulated secure element for NFC, so Google Wallet tap to pay now works. Full screen mode. Camera touch to focus update. There are now printing options. The rest of the stuff in the changelog about the Gallery app is updated, since the gallery app has been updated a couple of times since then. There are also updates to Touchless Controls and Active Display. And a bug with the home key, that has the phone respond as if you pressed the home key twice.
4.4 changelog: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/97696
4.4.2: http://support.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/moto-x.pdf
(Strangely, the update changelog on VZW's site has been pulled and is now showing the update for the first OTA, 12.7.7, that came with the phone last August.)

This is a disassembly video. This topic was addressed in the comments and the said: ". If you put the maxx battery in a ultra, it will automatically change the phone description in the settings menu of the phone to say droid maxx instead of droid ultra." How cool is that I'm thinking about giving it a try.
