[APP][4.0+] CellCB - Talk with people nearby just like a CB radio - Android Apps and Games

I recently put up a new app on Google Play called CellCB and thought I would post here to try and get some feedback on it. CellCB is an app that is meant to behave just like a CB radio in that it will allow you to talk with people within range of your phone. Unlike a traditional CB radio it does not operate on the 27 MHz band, so sorry to the folks who were hoping to use it as an alternative to the bulky unit they may have installed in their car or truck. What it actually does is use the GPS system on your phone to figure out what other CellCB users are in range on your phone and list/broadcast to them over the Internet. Right now it is set to a range of 4 miles but I may make this more/less in the future depending on usage.
CellCB is meant to be simple to use and closely simulate the behavior of a CB radio as much as possible:
Launch the app - Like turning a CB radio on it will immediately start listening for people broadcasting nearby
Hold the "Transmit" button - Like holding down the button on a handset it will broadcast your voice to people nearby
I hope to implement other features such as multiple channel selection, probably 40 like CB radios have, as well as some extras like making recordings and such. For the time being I just have the basic functionality with a single channel to see what people think and understand how well the core of it works. My goal is to keep things as simple as possible and therefore there is no type of registration needed before using it and no special configuration is needed like other apps that perform walkie talkie functionality over wifi or bluetooth.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.binaryroad.cellcb
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions/comments. Since this is a pretty new app you will probably need to find someone else to use it with, otherwise the chances of hearing someone broadcasting nearby your position at random are quite low.

If you go into Google Maps does it give you a fix on your location? Were there any messages about permission for location services?

Looks like the server crashed. I restarted it so give it another try. Looks like I still have some bugs to work out. I appreciate the help in giving it a try.

If Google Maps doesn't give your position either then it sounds like a problem with your phone in general and not CellCB. If your aren't able to get your location on Google Maps after a while you might want to contact the phone manufacturer about getting GPS working on your phone.

Thanks for everyone who has been using this so far. I found a bug that would happen with people who were on flaky connections and have fixed it now. Hopefully that was it and things should run smoothly now.

I have made a couple more fixes to deal with some issues for how location updates are done for certain phones. If anyone encounters any trouble with the current system, please let me know.

Nice idea.

[APP][22/06/2010][1.9.99.301] WAZE - free navigation

For all who are looking for a free navigation system WAZE is the way to go.
It's a community project and help is still needed to make it a perfect app.
Means driving new roads and naming streets.
A very nice feature is the that you can submit LIVE trafic information (hazard, speed cam) and if you drive slow it will show that for others too so they can avoid this street.
For WM is a new version available and it does look much better now. The one on Omarket is v1.4, so forget that one.
Here you can get v1.8
http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2061
Update 07/06/2010 Version 1.8.99.202
Latest beta version, which supports most 1.9 new features (missing feature - you cannot edit street names from within the application).
From some initial testings, there might still be freezing problems, but this version has better stability which is why we decided on posting it here, while still working on fixing the freezing issues.
Download 1.8.99.202
Update 22/06/2010 Version 1.9.99.301
Includes
* Filtering of reports by distance (updated)
* Correction of application freeze after prolonged usage
* Support of Facebook and Twitter traffic related inputs and respond (currently no FB connect is supported)
* Improved address search bar
* Improved zoom when driving through intersections
* Insert existing user name even if skipping it during installation
* Reduction of unnecessary route calculations
* ... and a lot of small bug corrections
Download 1.9.99.301
The installation will take up to 10min. So dont worry.

not google maps. they have there own map grid and the maps are generated by the community 1st by driving and 2nd by editing the map online.
the maps are online but when you look at an area on the device they get downloaded. so you dont need for maps always a connection

taiwan doesn't have a map grid yet as far as I can see but there are some streets already (check http://world.waze.com/livemap/). you can start using WAZE and after on the server you can change the part you drove into a street.
Thanks, I have been looking for a good navigator. Hopefully this works well. Im unlocked on AT&T. Does this not work for the states?

sure it should work without any problems in the states. it works on the whole world, but from area to area the community is different developed and therfore the mapping. but the states are the most developed as far as I know.
Thank you! I'll give it shot.
sorry but i can only say
[email protected] AWESOME!!!
anyway it s very badly developed in Hungary... even the capital Budapest!
so a lot of mapping job incoming...
and I can just say
spread the word and the more user the faster the job is done
happy waze'ing
Sounds like fun, maybe i'll give it a go here in the North of Norway
Edit: just one question, when i use this cab, will thre be any extra costs? Does it roam when its logged on?
WTF with bluetooth? ****ing pop up for Bluetooth! What i have to do?
After using it exclusively today, I give this app an A+. Only thing I dont like is people can ping you which gets annoying. When im traveling I dont want random people trying to chit chat with me.
Overall I endorse this navigation.
Just turn your bluetooth on and you can navigate away.
You are the CHAMP!!
I'm not too much of a fan.
Besides there is no real 'getting started' guide (the 'Guided Tour' is no more than an ad) there is a bad strategy for attracting new users: 24-48h until any update you do yourself shows on maps.
I'm in Switzerland:
- there seems to be right now no coverage at all
- there's no 'walk through' telling me how to add my region
- when my updates (from driving /w waze enabled) show up earliest 24h later, how would I know that/how it works?
So how would I know how to use the app? Did I miss something?
Frank
P.S. Even searches for smaller Cities like Davos or Chur did not provide any result. There needs to be much better user guidance.

Android Town

Ok, Android Town is now an obsolete name and application on the market. It was renamed to Peeples. Peeples is a seperate app on the market so you would need to download that one. It uses the same DB as Android Town so all your information is saved.
Peeples is a social community application which is location based. It enables users to see other users of the application on the map and strike up a conversation with them. Privacy options are also available.
So far the application has over 11k users.
Peeples has the added options of:
- uploading profile pictures and avatar through the application
- sending files from SD card with messages as attachments (5Mb limit for now)
Try it out and let me know what you think.

Running it on a G1 running CM 4.2.15.1.
Noticed a few things.
1) Registration via App Only (not a big deal, just no indication on the site as such)
2) Registration within the app resulted in "passwords do not match" ANY time I left a password field even when they did match
3) Map reacts slowly when being moved or zoomed in/out
As there's no one yet in my area run ning this, I haven't tested many of the other features. I'll report as I experience more.
Thanks for giving it a try. Hopefully some more US citizens register so you'll be able to interact with them. 5000 kms (around 3100 miles) is the biggest radius so far. Most of the users are in Europe at the moment.
Thanks for the heads up on the registration part. I will definitely try to improve it.
I was also thinking about adding content from social networks if users have any (FB, Twitter, FLickr...). What do you think about that?
And thanks again for testing
Have yet to install the newer release for testing, but looking forward to it.
The concept of linking other social media is a fine idea, provided that there are switches set in place to allow for selected/unselected status. I know plenty of users who would want to publish information for their Facebook, but may want to avoid doing so on other networks.
Either way, yeah, further integration with social media is a fine idea.
ill install and test tmmrw probably
seems pretty cool ill make sure to throw it on my EVO as soon as it freakin comes out
Added to my G1. Will let you know what happens.
Cheers. I sent you a msg in the app as well. Can you test how the send message screen looks on lower resolution please?
Testing it out now , but not many *users* in norway.
I'm the only one
Application is still in its's early days. If you choose a larger radius you will see more users (around 45 accross the world right now)
Application has just been published to the market as well, under the Social category of applications.
How about making a public chat channel that every one is in , when we connect . And late maybe switch it so it will be local / country only.
All depending on how many users this app gets
That's actually a very good idea. I'll be sure to do that as soon as possible...shouldn't be that hard (at least for a single one for starters)
Good nice app!
Already tweeted this. I'll Buzz it as well.
Private Messages look fine on the G1. No issue there.
I'll be comparing my experience to my friend's on the Nexus. Hopefully provide you some better feedback concerning how this works with the G1's older hardware.
Edit: First things we noticed, "Passwords do not match!" error is still present when registering via the app, even if the passwords do match. This issue has been replicated on the G1 and the Nexus 1.
Other noted issues:
Attempt to "Add as friend" on the G1 results in a toast of "Error". No other information contained in error.
Sending a picture on the G1 took about 1 min 45 seconds from time of shot to "Picture sent!" toast showed up.
I'll see what I can do to provide better information (such as screenshots, etc)
Let me know what else you could use.
Just a thought, an option to register via the desktop(internet) as well.
i couldn't figure out how to register until I found it as an option in settings when the app was open.
Doh.
It's lonely in the south of england......
Working on the mentioned bugs as we speak. Will probably release an upgrade today that might fix a few things.
@squirreleater: the internet register option is definitely needed. I agree.
anyone from germany?
feature request: please include option to add user with the username directly so that people from here can invite eachother other than searching on the map

Wont install on my Hero ??

[App] Root Call Blocker needs testers

Hello guys, im the developer of Root Call Blocker, an advanced call and SMS blocking app for rooted phones.
The app's home is here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051274
We have had multiple reports that blocking is not working sometimes on the American sammy phones, so we need some nice people to do some testing.
You can use the Groups function of the Lite version to do the testing - it gives you almost everything youd want from the app anyway.
Please post comments here, but also use the "Write to us" dialog in settings.
This is great, my bug with calls comng through sometimes when call waiting with more than 1 number was fixed in 165! Thanks a lot!
Enjoy... and remember, an update is always just around the corner!
Could you guys please test the following behavior for me:
1. How the app behaves when a blocked number attempts to connect during call waiting
2. How a blocked caller is handled when "Dont answer" is set as the reject method and you are currently on the phone and have not enabled blocked call vibrate notifications within the app itself
Dont forget to send logs with descriptions as well.
Come on people, i really need some feedback on this!
Come on guys - feedback will help me help you!
Awesome, working perfectly here thanks. Dont thing ive ever had issues with this app (maybe once had to do a manual license check)...
Thanks, could you please test the behavior i described above? Its very important!
Guys, an update has been rolled out. It contains an important new workaround thast needs to be tested.
It may help those people who have data issues, especially on LTE enabled phones sometimes.
Please help me test this by installing the app, rebooting and waiting for data to return with the screen on. Please wait 3 minutes at least before sending logs via "Write to developer" in the app.
Dont forget to include a description. Thanks!
Working perfectly for me! Thanks, this is absolutely top class. Ive been using CM as well, great app too.
Enjoy. And dont forget that im always checking these threads, ao comments and suggestions are welcome!
Any issues to report?
Maybe found a bug... just maybe
This actually sort of saved my a$$ so not sure if I should list it as a bug or not LOL anyways I'm using Miui on a HTC Desire Z and I loaded my root blocker pro and added a password and put it in hidden mode. I always back up my blocking settings so I forgot how to load root blocker pro when it's hidden, so I went into the settings into manage applications, then I uninstalled root call blocker and re-installed it and said no to the restore, got into the setting and restored manually. Could be a security flaw, what do you think?
There is no way to prevent this other than taking your sd card out. Its an android flaw.
Yes, its a problem with android itself!
Any issues to report?
Not sure if it the app or not. I have an evo shift. Im using the free version and ever since i installed rcb i lose all service sometimes, data and phone. A reboot fixes it. Like i said i never had this problem before i installed rcb. On a lighter note it works great awesome app! I will be buying when i figure out if it rcb or not
Supremly transmikked! Sense in disguise
RCB will only interfere with data at first run, so it isnt the app. Bad radio, bad signal, pretty much lots of possible reasons...
Ok, i did find that it is blocking all picture mail(mms). Is there a setting to fix it?

[Q/NEED HELP] GPS inaccuracy

Hello everyone. As you can see I have a GPS inaccuracy problem. My phone fixes to 7-8 satellites really fast (approx. 10 sec.), but when I use Run Keeper/similar sports tracker or Google Maps my trail is like zig-zag, app shows that I'm moving at crazy speed and so on. I tried AGPS Patch 3.1 by crypted, GPS fix by xenova, flashing some Radios (31_M and 18_M), ROMs and kernels (currently ARHD and Sultan kernel, tried ViperS, CM10.1), but nothing helps... I add some pictures which show my trail when I went across street (Vilniaus g.). Please help. Thanks

Nobody knows what problem this is?
If the problem remains also after wiping all, I think it could be an hardware issue.
Have you always had this problem?
When you use GPS while driving your car, the path has the same issue?
Totally wiped and installed CM10.1, but the problem remains. I bought it used. I don't know how much time it was used, but the digitizer had stock glue and the VOID is not damaged. No rust. So I think the previous user didn't have problems with phone. Never used navigation in car because I live in small country, which doesn't require any navigation to drive across Can RUU affect this? I really need normal lock...
If you try using only google maps? Test it making sure that it is the only app using GPS (kill background open apps).
i have the exact same problem! I've had the phone for a while, so maybe it's something that is worn. I'm thinking about the connections between the antennas and the phone for example. I hope we can find a solution! It's independent of which rom I use and which apps I use.
Have you seen this tip? "New Sensation Install - Gps Problems (Fixed)" @ cyanogenmod forum.
I can't find the option in cm10.1. So maybe they removed it or changed it to something else.
I'm thinking about flashing cm9 just to try it..

Google Maps behaves exactly the same. Arrow, which shows my position, jumping all arround my street pretty much the same as in RunKeeper.

I don't think that this is something software specific. I think that the problem is hiding somewhere deeper but not in software, because all roms and different radios behave the same way. I think this is something hardware related.

Mmm, then I think it's an hardware problem... try to contact HTC support!
Hello again every one. I don't want to create a new thread so I'm writting here. Maybe someone knows what problem this is? HTC support, as always, suggesting me to do things like resetting phone, pulling out the battery, fully charge and so on... I thinking about selling this wonderful phone because of such a big problem... I can't use GPS everywhere...
Gps inaccuracy problem is also facing to me too.
I solved it by flashing the latest firmware and use clocksync before each time i run. Works reasonable, but the clock drifts quite fast. It wasnt enough to only use clocksync or only flash firmware.

My thoughts are that it could be the gps antenna connections to the back. I have no other ideas..

[Resolved] [Q] Google Search App Battery Drain

Hi all,
I'm having a terrible problem with the Google Search App/Google Now, it's killing my battery. Keep in mind I'm not talking about Google Play Services, I've found plenty of threads talking about battery drain from that but not much concerning the Google Search App drain. Here's some screenies of what I'm talking about:
I tried posting screenies, but I guess I don't have enough posts yet.... So I'll just try to summarize. Basically the Google Search App is reporting using 80% of my battery and when I click on it it tells me that GPS has been on for one day and 12 hours.
So it looks to me like the problem drainage problem is due to the app is keeping the GPS on all the time. While I can go into Cyanogen Mod's privacy guard settings and disable GPS for the app, I would prefer not to do that because A. I like the location pop ups that Google Now provides and B. When I do this there's an annoying persistent notification at the top telling me that the Google Search App can't access location.
That said, does anyone have any suggestions as to how this can be fixed/alleviated? I don't really understand why the app needs GPS all the time, shouldn't it just ping the location every once and a while?
If it helps, I'm on HTC ONE m7, Cyanogen Mod/Android 4.4.2
p.s. Feel free to switch the location of this thread, I wasn't really sure where to put it.

is it a official cyanogenmod rom? if so 4.4.2 is a little old, you might want to update it, you don't have to wipe your data just flash the update.

Don't worry about the thread location, "Questions and Answers" is the perfect spot.
I've done some research on this topic myself, and it appears that this specific app does actually need GPS on all the time, because every time you search it actually searches Maps before it realizes that your search isn't for a location.
Strange, I know.
So basically, unless you're willing to give up GPS data for your Google Search App, you're going to have to deal with the battery drain.
Pro Tip! If the Cyanogen Mod "turn off GPS" function doesn't work properly (it's been known to be a bit problematic), try using avast! Mobile Security and Antivirus. This app does what Cyanogen is supposed to, but generally does it better and more reliably.
Hope this helps - and if it does, please hit the

Well thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them out and if I get any positive results from the norm I'll post them.
EDIT: Something that's been helping me is that I made a tasker profile where when the screen is turned off it turns off the GPS with the help of the secure settings app plugin.
It does hinder some of the functionality of google now, but keeps a lot of it intact.
