Can nylon corners be replaced? - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Do you know if you can replace the nylon corners on the Z3? Dropped it on the corner and got a nasty ding, but rest of phone is perfect, just the corner is damaged. Don't mind paying Sony to do it, as long as it's not so expensive. Just not sure if it's possible.
Thanks!

I am imterested in this as well. If anyone has any info

Up
I dropped my phone and also would want to know where to have these replaced.

They can be replaced.

So... Is it Sony that can replace them? I have a small dent in one corner. Anyone know where the phone is sealed? I would guess it is behind the nyloncorner as it is ment to take off for the fall?

Also curious. I dropped my phone onto a hardwood floor from 3,5 meters. Phone is fine but one corner has a crack on it. It´s barely visible but dont think it will take many more drops so this subject might come important for me.

What are you guys doing to drop your phones?

Other people write about droping the phone from 20cm and the screen cracked.
How in the world did your phone survive this?!?!?!

I guess the wooden floor was soft enough and rest was pure luck. Only the flaps opened and phone rebooted itself. I left the phone on a flat balcony railing and a minute later it dropped on its own because it is so slippery.
Btw it´s not the only time i dropped this phone on a wooden floor from hights more than 1 meter without any cases or covers. Durable phone.

Mine slid off a soft surface onto a tile counter top no more than 5cm, and the screen shattered. I can't say I agree that the phone is durable.

Id love to see some photos of drop damage. Do the nylon corners work as intended?

It is becoming clear that the Z3 is a phone you do not want to drop without a case on.

Isn't that true for all phones right now ?
Anyway, @op, could you provide pics of the affected area ? I'm curious to see how the nylon corners dealt with the damage, as Sony is advertising them as the saviour of Z3 in case you drop it.

Basically.. Although the Z3 has two pieces of glass, so the chances of one of them shattering is higher.
It's all about how lucky, or un-lucky you are on how it lands.

The days of Nokia 3310 are gone, only flagship phone that can really take a beating is the HTC One because of the speaker frames buffering the glass, so even corner impacts don't damage the screen.

So, anyone who actually had the corners on the phone replaced? Roughly how much did you pay?
One of my corners cracked after a drop yesterday, and the phone looks hideous now...
I must say that unlike what seems like most people experienced, I find the phone to be very durable.
I've dropped it several times from roughly 1-1,5 meters height, and only this one time any damage appeared - and it did not spread anywhere else than the corner.
I've attached pictures of the damage if anyone is interested. (Sorry for the extremely poor quality, apart from my phone I only have a ****ty webcam as camera...)

Where do you see Sony advertising the nylon corners for stopping damages? I would imagine rubber would help more than these hard nylon corners.

Did 1 of u manage to repair ? dent mine the same

Hello. Anyone has experience on the fix? A Taiwanese forum mentioned Sony replacement for NTD 5150 (about USD 165) as Sony representative said "the nylon caps are together with the screen/frame so everything has to be replaced". Ridiculous I would say.
Mine was more abrupt because it just slipped off the phone when I picked my phone up from sofa. Don't know if previous damage would have loosen it.
Does that affect waterproofing as well? My pressure test still positive though. Maybe I can just use super glue. Hmm. Update me please!

[Q] Hi Xperia Arc S problem

Hi guys.
Basically my problem is, today I was getting my MOT done, waiting around. Was using my phone to text, it was working fine.
Put my phone in my empty pocket, 2 minutes later, felt it vibrate and noticed I had a call coming in, but also the screen had a hairline Y shaped crack in it on the inside at the bottom.
No drops, knocks or nothing and its in a protective silicone case. I'm now having to basically hope that Sony believe me and let me know if its warranty repairable other than this its £50 - £60 charge for something that I did not do. Assuming they accuse me of dropping it.
Ive checked the net and it seems im not the only one this has happened to (albeit on other types of phones too).
Its only 4 months old from new, its a PAYG phone and had no insurance eek: I know).
What ground to I have to stand on if any at all ?
Bumped - Any ideas people ?
Has this ever happened to you guys ?

Thats more in reference to the exterior housing cracking, where as mine is the inside screen with zero exterior damage. But I suppose I see your point. Maybe someone has the same problem there due to heat....
If it's internal damage I don't see any reason for sony to reject your warranty. AFAIK if it was due to user mishandling then an exterior damage would be done before interior damages happen.

Thanks man, this is my view on it too. Although I imagine it wont be sony's.
The phone is only 4 months old and there is the general wear and tea on the case, the odd mark where its in and out the pocket and some scratches on the screen protector. But apart from that its immaculate. There is no significant damage on the case that would suggest It smashed of the ground.
If they tell me its broke because its been in my pocket then.... well, who doesn't put their phone in their pocket ?
As i say, its internal, screen has hairline crack inside, and went black at the bottom and also, unless I pressed the screen it just remained black.

Just thought id Update... Sony fixed it for free for me. Support I received was amazing TBF. New screen and its working good as new.

Piece of plastic coming out beside the phone

There was suddenly a piece of small plastic that's coming out of the Butterfly. It's located where the black piece of the phone meets the speaker-like mesh on the left side. Looks like it's part of the rubber that prevents water ingress.
It's really small and has a golden brown color. Has anyone else seen this on their phones?
No, do you have some shots of it ?

I think it will be very hard to do a close up shot of it.
little far away shot will also be helpful ...
i saw that before in my previous returned Butterfly (for touch screen malfunction), but don't worry, it is just the exceed glue, it won't impact the phone water resistance quality (told by the service guys, don't blame me if it is not true)
same here!
if it's kinda sticky, yes. it's the same. kinda worried though it might affect the phone being splash-proof.
but hey, it's not the (Sony Xperia) Z that we'll soak in water, is it?
Yep, I've also concluded before that it's just the glue. How'd I know? I peeled the 'speaker-like' sticker and put it back. Yes, it's just a sticker for decoration.

[Q] Is the glass on this phone strong?

Hi, im thinking about buying this phone because my Nexus 5 battery is horrible, the Z3 looks so good and the specs are good, however, im seeing lots of people saying that the glass on back or front cracks by itself, can you guys please post if your glass has broke and how long you have owned the phone
I have the original z and Z ultra. Had drop the ZU three times and 7 times on the z.
The ZU has not cracked, but the Z back glass did after falling into concrete, the back glass replacement only cost less that around US30.

had my phone for 4 days, dropped a short distance and it smashed like it'd been hit with a hammer! I definitely wouldn't have bought one if I'd realised! Sony customer experience was AWFUL! They've had the phone longer to fix (by weeks!) than I've had use of it! Back to Iphone for me!
The glass cracking thing is pretty rare and mostly the back glass. I would not worry about that. Its like worrying about the LG G3 cracking near the mic or dust under the M8 front camera module, both of which are also extremely rare. If you dig deep enough you won't be able to buy any phone, including the iPhone 6, which has a high defect replacement/exchange rate at T-Mobile due to the sheer volume of sales of course.

I got the z3. My wife had the iPhone 6 for about 60 hours, dropped it once and the screen was completely shattered. Shards fell out. Every phone can break when you drop it once.
bump
I've dropped mine onto marble tiles from a metre about 4 times and nothing. The glass is fine. All the haters will say it's going to shatter from heat/cold or blowing on it, but it's nonsense.
This phone has a lot more to worry about than cracking. That's one thing I know will not happen.
Seems like the front and back glass are not from 1 manufacturer. Had my phone for a month and noticed several scratches at the back. I think i got this when i put the phone on the laboratory table which was made of ceramic tiles. I carelessly put it and drag it (short distance only) trusting that the glass is strong. The front is pretty strong.dropped the phone several times from my bed to the floor with it's face down and no scratches on the front

Yeah, within a week I've already gotten scratches on the back. The front is fine though.

My front screen is fine. Back cracked on its own a few days after getting it. Got some deep scratchs on the back from sand on table at beach today and general scuff marks from everyday usage. Front is fine; no scratches or anything
Cracks don't seem to be too common though
Slipped off my bed and landed on a plate, back glass cracked from top to bottom, left to right. I only had it for a couple weeks.

Does anyone know how much it costs Sony to replace it? They won't say onnthe phone.
Yeah they won't until they see it just in case there is more than meets the eye. LG did the same to me when I dropped my G2 and screen shattered.
Back on topic, the back can be purchased for between $20-30 so at local repair shop it shouldn't cost more than $40-50 if you want some one to repair it for you.
If you want to do it yourself you will need a heat gun to loosen the glue and a suction cup or guitar pick etc to take out the back panel, also you would need to have glue to put the new one in. I forgot to mention, you have to detach the NFC pad from old panel and put it on the new one.
You better just give it to some one to repair it for $40-50 if you are not willing to do the above.

I am more than comfortable doing it myself. I did it on my Z. I have everything I need including guitar picks. Everything I find basically says that you can't guarantee a water tight case with aftermarket backs. Also if Sony does it, it's water proof again. I just don't know what to expect....$50......$100.....200. If it's a ton than I won't even bother sending it in to find out. I'm wondering if anyone has ever sent in a Z series for back glass?
If you search the forum, I recall someone had it done for $40-50 if I am not mistaken. It will definately will not cost $100, your pushing into display/digitizer assembly territory at that price.
I've had my phone slip off a couch and a tv dinner table onto hardwood floor and each time the phone has been fine. No dents or scratches that I noticed.
Planning to get a cheap back protector so it's not so slippery.
Glass is easy to crack. I accidentally drop my phone from 0.5m high facedown and right bottom corner front LCD was cracked called Sony Center and the price is $250 for the LCD and whole bezel thing. Pain in the A double S
Painful indeed, Corning is advertising their new GG4 as 2x better for impacts, in their ads they show gorillas dropping phones face down lol. I wish we had that.

What, if any, issues/manufacturing faults did you experience with your Z3?

I wanted to create this topic because I am curious and because I see many people asking if this phone isn't too fragile or has QC issues. I believe that the people with problems are the vocal minority but the best way to find out is to have a poll.
So, have you found any faults or is your device right as a little (Xperia) ray of sunshine?
You can select more than one option.
1st phone: defective camera (purple noise)
2nd phone: USB flap misalign when closed
3rd and current phone: so far so good
My first phone's screen had an area in a line from top to bottom, right of centre that had no touch sensitivity. The area was about .5 cm wide.
I couldn't touch anything on the line or drag anything across it.
I contacted Amazon.co.uk and they sent me a new one right away. They also let me hang onto the defective one until the replacement arrived without charging me.
Awesome! thanks for the replies so far! Please keep them coming!
My phone is perfect. The USB flap is a teeny tiny bit, like a fraction of a milimeter, misaligned but the seal is intact, I do not intent to take my phone into the pool anyway and thought it was pointless to go through the hassle of returning an otherwise flawless phone for something half of my friends can't see when I point it out. My carpenters eye is ridiculously accurate so meh.
The back glass scratched a few hours after removing cover. Ive only has the phone for 2 days and Bell wont take it back with damages. The phone has only ever been in my otherwise empty pocket...
Anyone else experiencef this? I thought both were gorilla glass.
I don't think the back is as scratch resistant as the front, as I too have very minor scratches on the back, using front and back tempered glass protects now.
My unit only has a slight annoyance which is the headphone jack is wobbly. It has about less than 1mm of wiggle room. I can see a gap between the metal body and the Jack. The Jack works perfectly currently.
Don't know if it's worth bringing to the Sony store, or to just seal it with some super glue or something. :/
Took some underwater pictures at the aquarium, thought it'd be cool.

That's what I'm assuming. I could also hear air bubbles when squeezing my device... :/
It worked fine for a while, I even rinsed it off in the sink after exposing it to the water. (It was fresh water, but there were fish in it) No more than 6 inches submerged for like 30 seconds. Was going through the pictures and the touchscreen just stopped working.

In reality, from what I have read, some are not waterproof out of the box. So sad to hear this when Sony advertised this phone as waterproof. Before submerging, did you try the water test via software (pressure sensor)?

Yes(Although I don't really think the test proves the waterproofness), I had also had it completely submerged for 10 minutes when I bought the device.

This really sucks because there is no way we can tell if it is waterproof until we really submerge it. I am going to avoid submerging mine at all cost.
Hi
I had some problems with this new phone.
1: no nfc working
2: horizontal section from 9 to 177 of the touchscreen doesnt work properly
So i get a third replacement by SFR (in France) and I think I get a fully working Z3.
I love the advertisement of Sony for ils Z3 in France : demand perfection (exigez la perfection)!
I've had 2 copper Z3's. First one, front glass shattered whilst in my front left pocket, nothing else in the same pocket. I've carried all my phones in the same manner and never had an issue. Also had the pink spot issue.
Second phone has 2 stuck pixels.
I really like the phone. They just don't like me
Got a replacement from T-Mobile, the camera button seems to be stuck.. Only works like 20% of the time. Instead of feeling like a dual stage button, it's just a single press with no tactile feel.
When in the camera app it either does nothing, or is stuck trying to focus repeatedly.
Has the same issue with the glass coming up on the back as well. Definitely feels and sounds as if adhesive it being "pulled apart" per se.
Also, the flaps seem to be a little mis-aligned.
My T-Mobile must have gotten a bad batch...
If you have a misaligned usb flap, will replacing the flap with a spare one fix it or is it an issue with the frame?
First one I got in store, noticed the power and volume up buttons were stuck and wouldn't click, the next one's speakerphone didn't work, now this one's camera button is stuck and doesn't have the two stage shutter and can't take photos in the stock app. I still prefer the phone over any other currently out.
Edit: I got mine through t-mobile.
UPDATE: The camera button has come unstuck and works fine now, though it does get a little stuck still.
Two display/screen issues :
- Screen burn-in all the time : status bar and home button more particularly. I strongly suspect a defective screen : I send my Z3 back to Sony, and they did... a software update ! I'm kind of curious about what they did exactly because my phone was completely updated. Of course, it didn't solve anything...
- Strange parasite lines surrounding text lines. Probably a software issue. I'm waiting Lollipop to see what it gonna do on my phone.
Sent mine in for a screen repair in the USA. Its a d6603 international version that is rooted and an unlocked boot loader stock. They just informed me that they cannot fix due to it not having the correct software and it not being a US phone.

Dropped Mi Mix

The phone is really weak, I drop it less than 1 meter I forget it on my knees.
I share with you the picture
With a case or without
It's a pretty brittle phone. If you drop it on the corners it's done (as pictured)
I wonder why anyone would think it could even stand a small fall. Ceramic, even though one of the hardest materials with scratch resistance on par with Sapphire, is also very a brittle material.
I would be worried if this level of damage happened even with a decent case.
Until the OP responds, we'll never know.

I have had 2 so far. Dropped one with the case. Small fall 2ft and corner got nicked even with the case. So I gave that to my wife and bought a 6GB version. Dropped that again (1ft drop) and same exact place got nicked.
I would not buy another one. Love the phone but not that much.

Ouch, where to next then? Mate 9?
Original case.
Next phone would be S8 if the renders are true. My favorite phone by far was the note 7, but you know how that went.
I usually change my phone's every few months so let's see what else is out there that catches my eye.

S8 won't survive drops much better. Especially the curved sides will be sensitive for hits like the corners of the MIX are. And well my two Note 7 i've owned were very very sensitive at the curved sides. Because of i could return both units in any condition i tested smash resistance. Just a soft hit on the curved sides with any hard object, display cracked. Dropped the device from half a meter to one of the four corner, display cracked, frame not looking nice. Without a real ruggedized case most actual mobiles, like S7 Edge, Note 7, Mate 9 Porsche, etc. won't survive drops onto the weak parts of the casing.
I also dropped mine waist high with one of those jelly clear case right on the corner, lucky me it only got a small tiny chipped on the screen it's barely noticeable, I think that my heart stopped for a second when that happened.
This is why any case should have a front bezel and padded corners.
I dropped mine waist height and it landed directly on the corner. No damage.
I've dropped mine a few times from chest level onto carpet. It landed face down most times and so far nothing chipped. It's the original case.

Which case were you using?
I dropped mine from about 2 feet onto hardwood last night without a case on. Thankfully no scratches or chips or anything but now that I've dropped it once I'm scared to death. Certainly does seem to be a matter of time before it gets destroyed, at least without a case.
But honestly putting a case on this thing seems like it would almost entirely defeat the whole purpose of this phone, at least for me.

You can find it for cheap on Aliexpress
I dropped mine from chest height with the included case onto hard tile. Landed right on the corner where the front camera is. Chipped it lightly, and now there are a few small spots in the corner that look a bit like the camera hole. I didn't expect it to even survive the drop, and was quite impressed the display didn't crack.

To be fair, that corner does have a sizable bezel (assuming you're talking about the front facing camera). I wonder what the impact would've been if it was either of the upper corners.
