Moving apps to sd card, will it happen? - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had my z3 for a week now and it's great. Love the design and as I have made the move back to android from iPhone 5s I'm loving the freedom that android gives you. My last android phone was a galaxy s2.
My problem is the inability to move apps to the sd card. Having been away from android for a couple of years I was surprised to learn that installing or moving apps to the sd card was no longer possible.
Why was the ability to move apps was removed?
Is it likely that it will soon be possible to root without unlocking the bootloader and then have the freedom to move stuff into the sd card?
I really hope so.
Thanks

Yes, just wait for proper root and you will be able.

Oh didn't see this thread, so Sony hasn't implemented it on their new 4.4.4 firmware. Damn I thought it was already in it. Hope they'll look at flagship phones too.

I dont think any of the Z models support app to sd, which is a HUGE drawback since in countries like India, you get the 16GB model ,but no 32GB model.

That would be good. The S4 also has incompatibility issues with many headphones, causes audio clipping (cracks and pops)
Why are people moaning about this? I thought everyone knew manufactures advertise the maximum capacity not the available capacity. I mean it's not like some HTC without an sd card slot. I think the smearing is more of an issue.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2
The smearing is an issue as is the audio clipping.
Most of the tens of millions buying the S4 won't be aware. . Any why should any company claim it has a certain memory, but then not clarify whats useable. Thats being transparent surely?
If anything I am hoping it pushes the need for 32gb versions to appear or become the minimum standard for JB.
To me its not the claiming 16 but only providing 9 usable GB, its the insinuation that you can just buy and use a microsd and the issue goes away when in fact all you can do with the msd is download content from your PC ie movies n music, I expect they'll blame Google for the change and to some degree they'll be right but it's still down to Samsung to provide more actually usable by the phone memory, it's the only real reason stopping me buying an s4 now.
Actually that's the reply I did get from Samsung. They blamed Google. That's ok, but let people know what the memory free is and about saving apps, caches etc...
They didn't as they were selling millions of devices.

That figures, they might get away with it as for many 16gb will be enough and a % of folk angered by the limit will swallow the Google did it spin however Sam are living off a previous good reputation hard earned IMHO this will cost them sales of the s5 and limit the longevity of s4 sales.
I dont think its acceptable because all companies have less. The 16GB N4/iPhone have 13GB free and Im sure the S3 had 12GB free. The fact the S4 uses so much up is silly. Losing a few GB isn't too bad. Losing all that is terrible.
Why do they blame google for the free space issue. Maybe samsung should put less bloatware on their phones.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
This is an issue across the board. When you buy a computer with a 500gb hard drive you get less space due to the os being installed. It's just in this case nearly 50% of the capacity is gone.
They may as well put 32gb in from now on, use up to 16gb for their os and sell it as a 16gb device.

I'm not pleased about having almost half the internal storage being taken up but can someone answer me this:
If external memory can't be used for large games (supposedly goggles restrictions) why can the game 'Bards tale' install it's game data to your sd card if you choose to?
I have and the 3.5gb went on my 32gb sd.

That's good news. Probably the exception rather than the rule and decent developers, and a fav game of mine. I believe Bards Tale specifically has an option that understands also the S4 partition. Sadly other games like Need for Speed MW dont do this. If you use Google Music, it caches songs into internal memory. If you rent a film from Google Play, again it goes into internal memory.

I agree. I know nfs can run if rooted and foldermount is set up to use the msd. So if developers added the option to install on to msd in their programs this wouldnt actually be as big an issue for some of us.

Google doesn't want apps on the memory card, internal memory is better for running stuff, and I have no problem with this so long as we have a reasonable amount of internal memory to start with. I personally would love to root and use foldermount but some key apps of mine detect if phone rooted and if rooted they don't work. Bummer.

It is not an issue of moaning. The device was released with a fancy chipset and content providers pushing 3d and social cloud apps with a device with less than 9 gb out of the gate. To make matters worse, there is only one carrier and just in the US offering a 32gb option for the customers- that want to actually use the apps being marketed and pushed by content providers.
The big issue is both Samsung and major retailers misleading customers that the 16gb is fine, since you can install apps to the sd card. Something that Android team got rid of for two reasons. Android team hated the feature and carriers complained about the customer service cost (a lot of people did not get that swapping cards or using cheap cards was the problem).

Nexus 4 Drops $100 On Price

Many of you probably already know, but here it is for those that don't. The Nexus 4 has dropped $100 in price for both 8GB & 16GB models. Can't really these prices if you ask me. For off contract purchase? This is insanely awesome!

I loke having my photos on an external SD. I loved my Galaxy Nexus (and I love my Nexus 7) but I hated the camera and lack of SD. I feel you. I mean it's convenient to be able to have external storage. Verizon locks up all their phones boot loaders, it's like a standard for them. For me I don't think cloud storage will be a problem with unlimited data. I don't think Google will give an option for expandable memory. It's a history with their devices that they don't have external SD's. I understand Google's perspective on why they do that but if the storage isn't expandable I feel it they should at least make bigger variants as options for those that do want more memory.

Ya, that is part of my current Verizon problem, limited data and on contract until December 2014 That is why I choose to go with the S3, while locked from Verizon devs make it possible to unlock.
If they made a 64, I think I could for go the external memory aspect. My GNex was a 32. It worked, but would definitely feel more comfortable with more.

Dumping my s4 for nexus 5

Hi I would like to know if anybody is considering dumping the s4 for a nexus 5 I'm definitely considering getting that Nexus 5 the only thing that I feel bad is losing the SD card and my battery being removal on S4 but if it's going to be 3000 mAh then it would be ok cuz im sure ill get you through a full day

Dumping the S4 and possibly my Verizon contract...
I'll get rid of the S4 if Nexus 5 comes with sdcard, better screen and better battery life. Otherwise it'll end up as a bluetooth audio player in my car, same as the old Nexus 4. And it's gotta be way more resilient than the N4 to be daily driver.
Dumping mine as well. Tired of Samsung os updates taking forever on the Canadian devices after international updates are released. Also not a fan of knox with not giving the ability to return to complete stock for resale. Battery size isn't a big issue as the n5 will not have all the battery draining extras and I hear 4.4 will be better on battery life. No as card isn't a big deal for me either as I already have a usb otg cable.
Have to love Google's marketing strategies... don't say a word about the device and let the people create it's own hype/Buzz.
Should be able to flip the s4 for a n5 and have enough for a case... which I have already ordered

I see this reason stated all the time and it's simply not true.
Read this article from Android Central from last year... It's got the real explanation. For those that won't read, it's because Google prefers to have one volume with an emulated SD card. Not because they want to force you onto their cloud storage.

I read the site but I think that is BS.
"We got tired of seeing OEMs include many GB of internal storage for music, while users were still running out of space for apps and data. This approach lets us merge everything on one volume, which is way better.
-- Dan Morrill, Android engineer at Google"
That makes no sense to me. Are they talking phones like the Sensation 4G that had 4GB ROM space and SD Card. Well a very easy fix. Give us 16GB or 32GB and SD Card and problem solved. We have enough space for all the apps we want and we can have removable storage for unlimited space. I personally don't care that much on a phone like the Nexus 4 I had, but when I had the Nexus 7, I really wanted an SD Card. I think that was more of a lame answer than the true reason.
Thats good to know that im not the only one considering dumping the s4 and I know that everybody has their own reasons I just like the nice clean stock android fill and look

I'm definitely getting rid of the S4 and getting the Nexus 5.
I got the S4 at launch, so the newly relocked MF3 (AT&T) bootloader isn't a problem for me, but the idea of it is. The fact that Samsung is releasing all these new phones with locked bootloader, maybe anti-root kernel, and now regional SIM restrictions I am very unhappy. The nexus 4 looked okay, but no LTE = no sale.
Sure, I will miss my SD card, but having a phone that can be bootloader unlocked in a second & knowing there will be lots of development for it (its a Nexus) makes me very excited to get it.
And I love my Nexus 7 2013, its a great device.
Wow i'm glad to see people realizing how crappy phones with 3rd party OS covers like Touchwiz are. N4 stock is much more responsive and virtually lag free, unlike the newer S4
No ill keep my s4 but more than likely pick up a nexus as well.. as long as the release it in white!

I agree with you. I don't see any plausible reason to not include both 16/32 GB internal plus removable storage nowadays.
Nevertheless, I don't think it's a conspiracy to keep people on the cloud.
I also agree that on a tablet it's much more useful to have an SD card than on a phone, since tablets are media consumption devices by design.
I've made my peace with it though and have adapted, but I can appreciate other user's reasons for wanting removable storage.
Luckily we have choice with Android and multiple vendors produce excellent hardware to accommodate any user.

locked bootloader? what a joke. But the main problem with S4 is bad stock firmware. My S4 would've been out the car window at freeway speeds if I had to deal with laggy, battery-gobbling TW bloatware.

I'm hoping the IPS on Nexus 5 is better than S4's amoled but it's unlikely. Try a S4 next to the G2 and see if you'll like LG's IPS. I found it less suitable for indoors (backlight bleed, low contrast) and you can't get the same range of saturation or color profiles like AMOLED. IIRC the contrast is a limitation of all backlit screen technology, same with limited color gamut & intensity. It's still a good tradeoff for unlocked bootloader, guaranteed best dev support, S800 w LTE.
Me 2 and Verizon can't wait

Move games and app data to external SD?

Between a couple games and Spotify, I very quickly filled up the internal memory on my 16 GB S5. I bought a 64 GB microSD card thinking I could just tell the phone to move the big apps and data to external SD, but it won't allow me to move most apps. Furthermore, when it does allow an app to move to external, it only moves a small portion (e.g. ~30 MB of 2 GB).
Is there a way to get apps or their data to be moved to external SD?

I use folder mount and map the /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb folder to /storage/extSdCard/Android/obb folder on my S4. This moves all of the large game files to SDCard and once it is setup any new game installs will automatically go to the sdcard. Just go into settings and uncheck Destintion folder checks or it will give you an error.
Here is a full write-up that rawintellect did for the S4 if that helps.

Yeah it works great. Raws post had a combination of tricks to maximize space but I found that using Folder Mount alone is great. Very easy to setup and works great. I have 167 apps on my download list and about 12 games installed and have 3GB free on internal.
I just hate that I have to do that, even though it works great. I have decided that I am not buying another Samsung phone until it is offered in at least 32GB. If nothing comes of the rumored S5 Premium I am probably going to the G3.
And that's sad because I have been one of Samsungs biggest supporters.

Is the note 3 too big for you? I've got one on sprint for my company phone and it comes with 32gb internal. I've been playing around alot with it and comparing it to my s5 and I'm kinda regretting the s5 atm and wishing I'd gone with the note 3 instead. I have a note 3 for work also. I like the note for work because the big screen comes in handy for remote support. But I personally wouldn't own a note. It is too large for my taste. I don't use the pen. So the S5 is perfect in size. But why they refuse to change from 16 on it is frustrating. Most of the other big name companies have moved on. And Samsung has also with the note. And the other companies have made it standard without hiking the price.
If the premium does come out I might bite the bullet and go with it, unless it too is only 16. But depending on price, design and ip certification I may not. Otherwise it will be someone else.
And I don't like the game Samsung is playing either, if it is true. Don't release an S5 that is marginally better than the S4, publicly say you aren't working on a premium version and then release one two months or so after the S5. Just come out and say we are releasing the S5 now and a premium version later. Yes I understand it is business and about the bottom line but I still don't like it. I think that is another reason why the S5 hasn't seen a lot of support yet. I think a lot of people are waiting to see if it does come out. Or are waiting for something better.
Anyway I guess I have ranted long enough

Well i completely understand that, especially now that they are shipping kit kat and we cant move apps to sd with kit kat. its kind of like they are lowballing us with 16gb just to turn around and say hah you guys fell for it and bought the POS. Here is the real flagship with 32gb base and premium build with the newer 805 etc. I could always handle 16 internal in the past when i was still able to move apps to my 32gb sd card without having to void my warranty. but now its just ridiculous that to just be able to utilize all of my apps I NEED to root. and all this crap with KNOX.
I might have to jump ship with my next upgrade, which is a shame, i've always like Sammy's toys. The samsung moment is the phone that got me started on them. and the rom community. being able to improve a phones longevity etc.

I just hate that I have to do that, even though it works great. I have decided that I am not buying another Samsung phone until it is offered in at least 32GB. If nothing comes of the rumored S5 Premium I am probably going to the G3.
And that's sad because I have been one of Samsungs biggest supporters.

You not migrating to the S5 stinks for those of us that made the move. Could really benefit from having you over here more.
I'm kinda with ya on the G3 though. Was going to wait as well until I was offered the S5 for $100. Couldn't pass it up.

Great deal! And thanks for the kind words. I don't think I would be able to pass that up either.

Nexus 6 64gb on back order

Ordered one now says backordered....didn't say that before
Before that I was considering the z3 due to band 12 and general awesomeness. Went with n6 due to 64gb and stock android.
But I'm looking into canceling and ordering a z3 instead. Tho IMA miss 64gb not 32x2 like my m8 and the z3 have.
How's the z3 holding up? Battery life camera performance etc

Pretty good camera. Amazing battery. Top end phone so it'll get lollipop update soon. Waterproof is sweet. You can buy a Samsung Evo card (cheaper and better ranked now than Sandisk) and have a ton of storage on external card. Crazy quick. Much sexier.
Friend had a Nexus 6. Finds it too big. Went back to a Nexus 5 believe it or not.
I agree the reason why I went 64gb is thats basically what I'm running on my m8 but since KitKat messed up transferring files to SD card and lollipop didn't help enough lol.
I read rooting it does something to camera?

Unlocking the bootloader kills the DRM keys (for now - until root w/ locked bootloader will be available - only a matter of time).
DRM keys have some algorithms for night shots performance. Long story short. It's complete BS.
I've tried night shots with multiple apps though, and the stock Sony, and the difference is basically nothing in my opinion, especially since I'd slap a person if saw them trying to take a half-important night shot with a phone, if the law allowed slapping of du*b people. Even high performance pocket cameras, like my Canon S110 or the Sony RXiii don't take amazing night shots. In order to use Sony's stock camera app to take fairly good quality night shots, the phone has to be on a tripod... so much for a "mobile phone"
So yeah. I'd go ahead and cancel that order and jump on the Xperia Z3, having had the chance to play with the Nexus 6.
And if you've even considered such a big phone...why not go with the Samsung Note 4? Just saying...
