Seems like I'd rather get the 8GB version for $50 less and just buy an SD card, lol. Does anyone know the specifics of that processor?

Well, for one it doesn't support SD (expandable memory) And it's processor is a SnapDragon s4 pro quad core 1.5ghz I believe.

Given what I've seen looking into kernel/framework code for the SGS4G, I'd want as much internal memory as I could get. Using a FAT-formatted card and "faking" a permissions-protected file system on top of that is just an ugly hack.
Burned once by the 1G in the SGS4G, I'm already wary of T-Mobile's decision to ship the Note II with the minimum internal memory that they can be configured with.
It seems like the trend for storage is cloud now, and with unlimited plans like the new one from T-Mobile it is starting to make sense to me....especially with multiple android devices. The external SD card days may be numbered.

Wow, a quad-core processor already? This may just be the next phone I purchase. @Jeff, do you really think you'd use up all of that 8GB for ROM & apps? That question sounds sarcastic and rhetorical, but i'm genuinely curious, especially since you know much more of how Android works than I do.

Its not so much about how much you use but the partitions. But being as it is a nexus device it has to follow the open source guidelines so that should never be a issue. matter of fact I dont think any phone that is not a Samsung uses a proprietary partition system like bml and such.

If it is a $50 difference over a two-year lifespan of the phone, that is something like $2 a month. For that, I'd rather not have to hope that app/data size wouldn't grow quickly. For example, I bought some motherboards for lightly loaded servers a couple years ago. I though that 1 GB would be plenty of memory for them. Now I'm cursing that I can't expand them over 2 GB as they only have one DIMM slot.
I don't know where things are going, but I am sure that the phone manufacturers would love to be able to get you to buy a new phone sooner rather than later. A related example is that Intel had a big problem in the mid 90s -- they realized that their processor power was getting to the point where any home user would not need to upgrade. So they invested heavily in digital TV, cable, and broadband so that there was demand for faster processors.
I think I might be able to get this

I'm definitely getting this for Christmas.
I mean seriously, 2 GB of RAM! Plus a Quad core! That beats my old laptop! Which has 2 GB and 1.7 GHz processor (just one ).
I'm definitely getting the 16 GB, but I would really enjoy it if they added external storage :\

What about wifi calling?
Would've been perfect but the lack of a microSD card slot and the lack of a 32gb model killed it for me. 16gb just simply isn't enough to hold my music collection as well as my pictures and videos and if you're an audiophile like me, then you know that music just streaming off the cloud won't cut it compared to music at 320kbps or lossless stored on the device itself. I wanna be able to listen to music while I'm on a roadtrip or on a plane, so if I have to rely on cloud service, I won't have most of my music with me... Unless they make a 32gb model, looks like I'm taking the iPhone 5 route...it was either a nexus android phone (I just cannot take the lack of updates anymore) or a iPhone and well the nexus was this close but they just had to have one downfall...you would think that they would have figured it out by now but no...

No.
You are using a mobile device not a high end audio system at home.
Pictures would be better backed up to the cloud using something like Picassa or dropbox. That way they can be viewed anywhere.
I dont like the idea of being limited to a certain size of internal memory and no sdcard. But only because if the internal memory goes wonkers it costs more to replace than buying a new sdcard. Not because I want to claim to be a audiophile and need 320kbps files on my phone.
Okay yeah, this is a mobile device but why not make the most out of what you have? Why listen to crappy really compressed mp3's when you can store things at 320kbps where compression is minimal. With a good pair of headphones, I can hear the difference. It doesn't take a super high end system. I wanna be able to enjoy my music on the go, there's nothing wrong with that..even on YouTube you can tell the difference in sq between 720p and anything below it.
But what's the point in argueing about that on a phone forum, we both agree that we would rather not be confined to only 16gb of internal storage.. I don't understand why can't they simply include it. Every year, that's what people ask for and yet every year, they have to have some downfall.
Nexus S: No external storage and no HD Video Recording
Galaxy Nexus: No external storage again, sub par camera in comparison to other phones, and a pentile display.
Nexus 4: No external storage ONCE AGAIN.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
The biggest reason..cost. They dont care if you are willing to pay for it. They are looking to make a unlocked unrestricted phone. Its kinda like not putting LTE radios in. They are looking to make a good phone that is cheap enough people can buy it and not spend 600 bucks. They have found 350 is the price most people will pay for a unlocked phone and not be upset.
16GB is the point they can produce a phone and still make money at the 350 price point.
I think it's just part of the push towards cloud storage. The slight reduction in audio quality in return for the convenience of having their complete audio and video library on all of their devices is a trade I think the majority (not all ) of consumers have no problem with. Besides, with the trend of wider bandwidth for less money that has been with us since dial-up, I don't think it will be such a long time before the streaming quality improves further....historically that's what it's always done.
If audio is your prime concern then I would be more concerned with the type of DAC's in the phone as ultimately that will give you your real world "ceiling" on your audio quality.
I think Google had done fantastic job of providing the consumer with a feature packed, unlocked phone at a hell of a price. Much like with the N7 this will force down the prices of other manufacturers products in order to compete...a win for the consumer.
For anyone that thinks this phone isn't a great deal, Google "unlocked GS3 or iPhone 5" and get back to me.
Plus Whitehawkx, Romann, and the other aokp guys have been lighting up Twitter with tweets about how eager they are to get one, so the development should be strong right off the bat.
Just my 2 cents lol
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
But think about it, it takes a lot more battery to steam music and continually use data in the background than it does to simply play music on your phone's memory. And what are you supposed to do when say you are on a roadtrip where signal is edge at best or when you are in a subway or plane where you don't have any signal at all? When I have a smart phone, it is my all-in-one device. It holds my music, works as my GPS, and acts as my phone. And what about apps? The whole point of the smartphone is to have apps right? Where are you gonna store your apps and games if they continue to go the cloud route and completely remove internal storage? Imagine using this galaxy s 4g without the 16gb micro sd card. In my opinion, that would be horrible. I don't wanna have to carry around an extra mp3 player around with me just to be able to fit less than half of my music collection. I don't think adding a micro SD card slot would have added that much to the costs. Whatever. I personally have no problem at all with signing a phone on contract because really, I am just saving money on the phone and paying as much as I would on a prepaid non-contract plan. I don't really see what is so bad with that. It would be more of a hassle switching constantly to different service providers than it would be to just stay with one.

It's a huge BS blame game. AT&T's people claim that Samsung isn't providing the 32GB yet and Samsung claims AT&T hasn't asked for it yet. Of course, there are no "official" releases from either yet, just Twitter, Facebook, and forum replies from people that claim to know. It seams as though AT&T is the only US carrier that said they would carry the 32GB but only "soon" has been hinted as to when. And no one (AND I MEAN NO ONE) at AT&T is willing to talk about it. I'm sure it's like all of the rest of AT&T's screw-ups, they hope it will go away if enough time goes by and people will forget about it.

I agree. Even though I went ahead and got a 16 gb, I think its BS that google changed that. Does anyone know why exactly?
I really wish these carriers would pull their heads out of their a** and start being able to offer multiple storage sizes. Even with an SD slot, they can release the fruit phone with multiple choices, why can't we have that same luxury with samsung?
Just my 2 cents.
This is why these android manufacturers can't compete with iPhone. The reason Google did this is for greed. They want you to store all your stuff on their servers so they can mine it for data and deliver you targeted ads. This is their sole business and money maker. Why do you think they made android free in first place.

Nexus 4 didn't have OTG support (without custom kernel and external power, which defeats the purpose). I'm still waiting for confirmation for the Nexus 5. OTG drains alot of battery and not the most convenient either, but it is one of the key feature I'm looking for.
The Nexus 4 launch was a failure because Google didn't expect this much demand from the Nexus 4, but Google has learned their lesson and has told LG to make a lot more Nexus 5s for the launch than last years Nexus 4.

It really bothers me when people try to make this argument...it's so self-centered, and besides, it's a fallacy. Your argument is this: Because you won't fill up 16gb of storage, it must be true that no one can have any possible reason to fill up 16gb of storage.
Everyone's usage patterns are different. Here's some logic that's not a fallacy: Because there are many people hoping and asking for a 32gb or 64gb option, it must be true that many people need more than 16gb.
Now, here's the part that really angers me. Why don't they just offer the user a choice? 16gb for $299, 32gb for $349, 64gb for $429. How hard can that really be?

I'll get rid of the S4 if Nexus 5 comes with sdcard, better screen and better battery life. Otherwise it'll end up as a bluetooth audio player in my car, same as the old Nexus 4. And it's gotta be way more resilient than the N4 to be daily driver.
Dumping mine as well. Tired of Samsung os updates taking forever on the Canadian devices after international updates are released. Also not a fan of knox with not giving the ability to return to complete stock for resale. Battery size isn't a big issue as the n5 will not have all the battery draining extras and I hear 4.4 will be better on battery life. No as card isn't a big deal for me either as I already have a usb otg cable.
Have to love Google's marketing strategies... don't say a word about the device and let the people create it's own hype/Buzz.

I see this reason stated all the time and it's simply not true.
Read this article from Android Central from last year... It's got the real explanation. For those that won't read, it's because Google prefers to have one volume with an emulated SD card. Not because they want to force you onto their cloud storage.

I read the site but I think that is BS.
"We got tired of seeing OEMs include many GB of internal storage for music, while users were still running out of space for apps and data. This approach lets us merge everything on one volume, which is way better.
-- Dan Morrill, Android engineer at Google"
That makes no sense to me. Are they talking phones like the Sensation 4G that had 4GB ROM space and SD Card. Well a very easy fix. Give us 16GB or 32GB and SD Card and problem solved. We have enough space for all the apps we want and we can have removable storage for unlimited space. I personally don't care that much on a phone like the Nexus 4 I had, but when I had the Nexus 7, I really wanted an SD Card. I think that was more of a lame answer than the true reason.
Thats good to know that im not the only one considering dumping the s4 and I know that everybody has their own reasons I just like the nice clean stock android fill and look

I'm definitely getting rid of the S4 and getting the Nexus 5.
I got the S4 at launch, so the newly relocked MF3 (AT&T) bootloader isn't a problem for me, but the idea of it is. The fact that Samsung is releasing all these new phones with locked bootloader, maybe anti-root kernel, and now regional SIM restrictions I am very unhappy. The nexus 4 looked okay, but no LTE = no sale.
Sure, I will miss my SD card, but having a phone that can be bootloader unlocked in a second & knowing there will be lots of development for it (its a Nexus) makes me very excited to get it.
And I love my Nexus 7 2013, its a great device.
Wow i'm glad to see people realizing how crappy phones with 3rd party OS covers like Touchwiz are. N4 stock is much more responsive and virtually lag free, unlike the newer S4
No ill keep my s4 but more than likely pick up a nexus as well.. as long as the release it in white!
Havent had a nexus device since 5 devices ago..im overdue.

I agree with you. I don't see any plausible reason to not include both 16/32 GB internal plus removable storage nowadays.
Nevertheless, I don't think it's a conspiracy to keep people on the cloud.
I also agree that on a tablet it's much more useful to have an SD card than on a phone, since tablets are media consumption devices by design.
I've made my peace with it though and have adapted, but I can appreciate other user's reasons for wanting removable storage.
Luckily we have choice with Android and multiple vendors produce excellent hardware to accommodate any user.

I am also dumping my note 2..though it is a good device but the newer samsung devices has so much restrictions like region lock, knox bootloader and exynos processors which nobody likes....looking forward for my first nexus device

Dumping my ATT GS4 for the Nexus 5....solely due to the locked MF3 bootloader on the GS4....
I even have and use a 64gb SD card and have 4 batteries for the GS4...it's just such a laggy POS I will give all that up for a stock android experience.

locked bootloader? what a joke. But the main problem with S4 is bad stock firmware. My S4 would've been out the car window at freeway speeds if I had to deal with laggy, battery-gobbling TW bloatware.

I sold my S4 just a few days ago for the Nexus 5 wait.
The Knox bootloader was the last in a long line of disappointments by Samdung. The screen tearing was quite annoying as well. I'm actually looking forward to a non-AMOLED screen. IPS is a better option.

I'm hoping the IPS on Nexus 5 is better than S4's amoled but it's unlikely. Try a S4 next to the G2 and see if you'll like LG's IPS. I found it less suitable for indoors (backlight bleed, low contrast) and you can't get the same range of saturation or color profiles like AMOLED. IIRC the contrast is a limitation of all backlit screen technology, same with limited color gamut & intensity. It's still a good tradeoff for unlocked bootloader, guaranteed best dev support, S800 w LTE.
Me 2 and Verizon can't wait

I'm the proud owner of a black 32gb Nexus 5. I call her "Black Betty". I needed more space since I have tons of pics, music and games. I had the 16gb Nexus 4 and it was barely cutting it. I was down to about 2-3gb once I loaded up all my data.

three other threads about the same thing
This thread is pointless, nobody can tell you what YOUR needs are. Some people are fine with 16gb, and for others 32gb is not enough. Only you know what your usage is like.
I got the 32GB as 16 GB is Low for me. Secondly there is no expandable memory and hence I opted for the 32 GB.
Though I agree with _MetalHead_ that this is a pointless thread as you should know your requirements and if 32 GB is not available in your country, there is no point in talking about it. Though don't you think you could have bought it from ebay.com if you seriously needed 32GB.... a risk that you could have taken on Nexus 5
16 gigs with a otg cable and a 64gig sdcard = no troubles
Its obvious that OP wants some consoling because he can't get the 32gb version.
OP, you should buy your 16gb nexus 5 and use an otg cable to connect an SD card of whatever size you want to the phone.

Got the 32GB white cause I could, only use about 100MB of it though as I remove all media from the phone once sync'd to my laptop/the cloud
Please use one of the existing threads.
