Hi there !
I have an EURO S4 htc one S and since there are 2 version of this phone ( the S4 cpu and the S3 cpu ) I'm starting to be a little concerned about updates as it's been a while since the last one.
Actually I'm still on 1.78 because 1.84 cames out just for the US t-mobile version and there are a list of bug that I would like to see fixed from htc.
1) meteo app and meteo widget works bad ( lag, crash ecc )
2) 3G isn't working sometimes even if the phone show the signal ( problem from early days )
3) Browser performance are not that great expecially now that I have some apps installed
4) live meteo background isn't working
5) also with 1.78 quadrant show a worst benchmarsk result of about 700 points!!
6) sense crash sometimes
So there are a lot of things to be fixed here and there, and as I have paid this phone a lot of money I would like to receive a decent support!!
yes, the update speed is slow like hell with only S4 and don't mention there is one more S3 now, the speed will be even slower. I think they only spend time on One X/AT&T and leave us behind.

Wait the TMo One S is in a different update channel so it may recieve different updates to the Euro/WWE One S. It's a "flagship" device so it should get updates (including Jelly Bean)
First of all they should end with all that silly "sense" stuff and also messing with android itself. I also have Nexus S and despite the fact that it's quite old device and dosn't run so smooth anymore, I have no problems. And I guess that this is because it uses vanilla android, not some screwed up stuff from HTC or Samsung.
HTC makes great phones in terms of hardware, but they should abondon their crapware or deliver it as an addition to android, not replacement of it's essential parts.
This is my personal view, I never liked Sense (it made sense for Windows Mobile) but i like HTC phones.

completly disagree, I buy HTC because I want sense, I don't like android basic at all. They just need to speed up the software development department..
I LOVE HTC design & Hardware that's why I bought an HTC but I HATE sense (it has some good things though, but I think its overweight is not worth it) maybe they could allow more customization and allow download/enable only the things you like...
Back to the topic I don't think S4 version will be forgetted, S3 will only ship to some zones, but worldwide both versions will be present.
Sadly One S will not be as supported as One X, but it still will be supported quite a bit (and after we will still have custom ROMS )

The problem with custom Roms is that with 2 versions of the one S ( s4 and s3 ) the diffusion of the device will be not uniform and we will have less development that own a specific version. Also custom ROMs need fresh drivers!!!

I really doubt that will be less development, just give it a while for devs to get s3 roms running.
Anything is better than the what the amaze dev section has.

If you check the Touch Button Issue thread (GSM 900/1800MHz) countries are affected only, no relevance to US) you will see various HTC statements that they work on a fix for that issue rolling out soon.
The quality of the statements rather sound like "Update" to me not fix. So it might mean a new RUU and include more fixes? *hope dies last*

I don't think we need to worry about updated for our phones. HTC is the best OEM as pushing out updates. According to Google, handset makers have had their hands on Jelly Bean code for a while now. My guess is that HTC is already working on the Android 4.1 update and will try to get that out as soon as possible.
HTC may also push out a few smaller updated between now and then to resolve some of the issues that have been pointed out. The HTC one S is a flagship device. Support for the phone will not dwindle until HTC pushed out a newer handset.

And a lot of the time, its T-Mobile who holds out on the update while they "double check" everything.
I know on the amaze we had a leaked Rom that was exactly the same as the ota almost a month before the official ota was put put by T-Mobile.

It's pretty simple, too...don't like Sense? So flash one of the many non-Sense ROMs (pun not intended)---CM9, for one...If you don't want to have to flash and you hate Sense, well THEN you probably bought the wrong phone.
As an aside, my brother got T-MO US to give him a FREE SGSIII yesterday with his 2 year upgrade (he only qualified for partial upgrade at the time). THAT is why I love T-Mobile...customer service can be very helpful and nice sometimes.
We got XDA....we fix our own bugs...HAHAHA

I am looking to HTC 8X device to replace my HTC HD2.
HD2 was legendary dual booting device. I just wondering if HTC 8X would have similar dual boot capabilities.
No clue but if we can figure out how to crack the internals the One XL and Droid DNA will be the devices that we can use for kernels and ROMs to some extent.

Doesn't really work like that... you have to build a hybrid kernel from the ground up with the engineering unit and they specs are totally diffrent on all the devices you listed

The 8X is kind of different but kind of not different. The audio subsystem is shared with the Droid DNA, as is the front and rear camera (most likely), and the Evita/One XL shares the same display resolution and same SoC and such, so those two devices will likely provide everything needed for a hybrid kernel that will run Android on this device.
The problem is actually getting the firmware to load that kernel. From what little I understand about the WPx devices, there's a TPM module inside that needs to be side-stepped and the bootloader system is different from the Android variants, which makes life a lot harder.

2 very different phone,s.
And if you want android, dont even look at WP8.
No offense, just my mind speaking at loud.
8X is a beauty and i would never put android on it.
And last but not least......HD2 is a whole different ball game.
Thats just a monster phone that left out a lot of phone in it shadows.
That will take some phone to beat and i dont see that coming soon.

Well friends I have read on many forms that if anybody wants android then they should buy android device, & those want windows phone should buy a windows device, BUT LET ME TELL THE NEW SMARTPHONE members,

I am still trying to figure out the logic of wanting the stock AOSP for the S4 from Samsung.
How will this be any different from running any other AOSP rom? I mean, if you check out PA GamerZ ROM, that works quite well as a daily driver. Why would we want to use this stock AOSP (with features that are quite basic)? Just to get 4.3 when it comes out? So? Some dev will port that anyways.
I mean, if someone bought the S4, wasn't it for the features? If anyone wanted stock AOSP then why not Nexus 4? Ok if hardware is the question, then really waiting for the next Nexus isn't that hard.
So can someone explain to me why?

For someone like me, it's not about running the stock AOSP on S4. It's about how it can improve the AOSP based custom roms like CM, PA, etc.
Hopefully, Samsung/Google will release proper source codes as quickly as for Nexus devices so that custom roms can run better on S4.
I've been using GS3 (i9305), mainly with CM for the last 10 months or so. It works ok as a daily driver, but not as well as it could've been, mainly because not all the necessary sources are available/released.
I tried Nexus 4 for about a couple of weeks and running CM was definately more fluid/enjoyable than on GS3.
But I couldn't really get used to not having the physical home button and lack of storage space. If GS4 Google Edition is released with exact same hardward as normal i9505, then this will be almost perfect - custom roms running as well as on Nexus devices with physical home button and MicroSD slot.

In simple terms.
Google gets to have its vanilla version of Android on a flagship device without having to subsidize the cost of designing the hardware.
Unlike Nexus devices where Google invests R&D money to make the hardware... having Samsung and HTC put a version of Stock Android on the device pretty much absolves Google of any financial liability in relation to hardware development.
Nexus devices are traditionally spartan... and Google likes it that way... but what if mobile manufacturers want to have nexus compatible device with all the bells and whistles... they will all compete on who has the most Nexus compatible device.
This will attract developers and customers that prefer the stock Google experience
Bear in mind also Google is still developing their Motorola flagship device... this has handset makers very jittery.
Having a GE also puts the latest Android on a device and puts pressure on the makers of the device to move build it out into their MAIN version of Android.
So Key lime pie or 4.3 should come quicker on the HTC and S4 than would be tradtional.
Another issues is transparency.
For too long handset makers have said "our phone can't run the latest version of Android" when we know they lie.
Samsung has been good.. the S2 has JB while the HTC Sensation 4G has all but been dumped by their makers.
Companies that have a Google edition will have that extra edge in longevity.

I hope we get firmware today
I thought it would be good to start a threat about kitkat anticipation and also when a ROM is spotted we would have a place to talk about it. A lot of people are porting the HTC one ROMs to the one x and there is some CM kitkat ROMs already on the HTC one. So maybe we can find someone to port it soon. Its already apparent that the sense versions are behind . the HTC one has 4.3 and sense 5.5.. Pure android seems like it will be the only way for new ROMs
I feel as though we should leave kitkat alone and mainly focus on the roms at hand, but I definately would not mind a nice piece of chocolate if you catch my drift

I'm not sure why you see that. There were at least 2 or 3 devs that ported Sense 5 over from the M7 to the EVITA (before HTC released Sense 5 for us officially). As long as there is interest by devs, I don't see why they wouldn't do the same again for KitKat and Sense 5.5. True, the hardware hurdles will be an issue. But AOSP ROMs will experience their share, as well.

Team Venom has released the Viper ROM for the HTC One. They released ViperXL for ours. Seems like they have all the necessary talent and tools to put together a new ViperXL release with 4.3/Sense5.5
I am pretty sure Kit Kat is going to be a while. It would be really cool to get a 4.3 Rom good enough to be a daily driver. They are getting there. We still have a healthy Dev community.

As far as 4.3 being a daily driver, I'm running PAC 4.3.1 with touched 6.1 kernel with no problems, I use it as a daily driver. I've been on 4.3 maybe a month with little to no problems. So I think 4.4 is looking good for our phones

While you're having success with that ROM there have been several problems plaguing 4.3 ROMs, that's what's being referred to.

4.4 Kit-Kat is officially coming to The HTC One in January of 2014 So hopefully we see a nice port come to our One X/L
Unfortunately it's pretty difficult to port from the One due to the different chipsets and resolution, it just doesn't work properly. A port would need to come from a similar device, like maybe the One Mini.

After all, it has been a flagship phone for several months and is still a powerful one in the markets
I seriously doubt this phone will ever get Android 5.0 as an official update, I'd put money on it. I'm not sure where you read that but it's highly unlikely. We're probably not even going to officially see 4.3 or 4.4.

No we are supposedly getting a Sense 5 Update (Android 4.2 from Android 4.1.1 I think) But AT&T won't get it till next November probably
You're not quite right about that. HTC push their own non-carrier updates to their non branded/Asian models and they do have a terrible record of keeping promises and getting them out on time, if at all.

Hey guys I have the international version but both versions seem to be abandoned by HTC but there is a glimmer of hope as Google want 4.4 pushing out to all devices capable of running it so hopefully HTC will update all the one series phones eventually.
Google can't even get their own nexus (galaxy) updated. What makes you think they can make HTC do it. This phone won't get any more updates. The next HTC one will be out soon and all focus will go for that.

All of the kitkat roms are pretty darn smooth. I had some SD card/signal loss/reboot problems on shoredroid so I moved to the CM 11 nightlies. Latest nightly working perfectly so far *crosses fingers*
I have been trying really hard to replace my One XL with a new Lollipop enabled phone, but have been hard pressed to find a replacement. the OPO is brilliant, but is a bit too big for me (though I might still cave in).
So, considering I am planning to stick with my One XL for sometime, I'm trying to see if we can get devs interested in porting Lollipop over. The biggest advantage that I'm looking for is performance and battery life boost - due to Volta and ART, which may extend the usefulness of the One XL considerably.

Proving it works with appropriate photos and/or screenshots
Providing full step-by-step instructions for which anyone else can follow
Confirmation from at least 2 persons on these forums that the ROM is working

Are bounties payable via PayPal? We all live in different countries and that would probably be the safest and most effective way of doing it.
If the above features can be worked in (im tempted to make it harder and say have Sense added to - because I like sense) then I'll add $15 to the sum so far.
An indication from a developer on the scale of the job and its setbacks, realism and expectations too would be appreciated early on.

IMHO Sense is closed source - what has happened till now is that binaries of Sense UI have been made to run on newer and newer Android versions (going to 4.3 I think). However, as the newer Android diverges from what was the original intended Android version (for Sense), it becomes harder and harder. I think Sense development has pretty much stagnated on the Evita because of this.
I would say it will be a little hard and unrealistic for Sense to be ported over as such - but I think you will love what Lollipop and Material Design UI has tooffer. If you have the change to spare, I think it would be a good bet !
Last time around (in the Evita bootloader unlock), we transferred the bounty using Paypal. I'm planning to do mine that way this time as well.

Not sure what you mean. I was replying to the poster above who was asking for the possibility of Sense being ported to lollipop on this phone.
Ok lollipop does look pretty great sans sense so it sounds like a good investment, provided a reasonable time scale for it's production, so hopefully the pledges will come in.

this is not for the evita - this is for nexus 5 and newer variants. In fact if we do not convice someone to build a CM12 variant in time, our phone will be dropped from any nightly builds

Device cutoff based on specifications. We expect 512mb devices to be fine, but the issue here will be GPU and non-Kitkat binaries. Expect a hard line here drawn in the sand with respect to device support. This will not be pretty for many older generation devices (pre-ICS).

I've always been of the opinion that HTC could have quite easily given us KitKat officially but they wanted to push people to upgrade unnecessarily. From the way lollipop sounds android promote it as being faster and more efficient than either KitKat or jellybean so if anything it should be pretty decent on our hardware.

You hit the nail right on the head there, that's exactly why they don't provide official updates. They're a business and profit is their bottom line. If they provide updates for older devices then the owners of those older devices have less reason to upgrade, less people upgrading means less profit for them.

Yeah but you'd think people will upgrade naturally because of better hardware and specs, etc.

Exactly, that's why I still have my HTC Inspire 4G, HTC One X, and my new LG G3. No sense in getting rid of the old ones when they work great with all of the ROM development that occurs! That old Inspire works great as a walkman while out in the mountains!
should just be happy with the kk roms and cm11 with gapps until something better comes out. I really like the 5.0 interface but it is really nothing ground breaking
Agreed...only thing to look to is if any real performance improvement....
