[Q] Phone accident, questions about touch input - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greeting my fellow phonenerds, today I accidently my nexus 5, in the water after having it and loved it with all my heart for more than half a year. My heart stopped and my breath was on strike, but i was quick in turning it off and leaving it for drying in the sun for a few hours (it was pretty hot this day), with the back case opened. I started the phone and saw some quite depressing and scary phenomena, like, flickering screen, lines switching rapidly, but also no touch input, nothing registered, it sometimes "touched itself on random locations" but without my control. So i shut it off, leaving it for more drying, i've also cleansed the electronic connections with acetone very carefully to remove any oxidation or dirt from the water, left it for drying again. The screen is ok now, some little flickering from whiter to darker, but mostly fine, no buggy ****. Altough it cannot still sense my touch input, but i've only tried booting to the main os so i thught, wel lets try booting it in recovery mode, and voila! the touch works fine, but not when booted into the home screen. What is the problem?

The problem is it got wet..... Lol
Sorry, but kinda a silly question.
Water usually fries something.
Send it for repair. ?

To be clear....water will not ever, in anyway, affect software.....so I'm sure you have hardware damage, as is usually the case with water damage.
Hey, flash stock to it and see. If it works, awesome!!! If its the same....game over.

I will try to flash stock. I think it's just weird that the touch works in twrp recovery and not in the OS, dont you think?

Yes, its strange....but could just be how it is. Getting it wet won't alter files... Just fry hardware.
If its the same after a wipe and stock flash....you're probably pooched. That rules out software anyway.
Good luck!

It is strange, doesnt sound logical at all, does twrp use other hardware to sense input? no. Well, somehow the water made the phone buggy, because it works now Clean install of carbonrom.
Edit* I took my joy too early, its still buggy, sometimes the touch works great, then the os freezes and a simple restard of screen can make it funcion again.

I cleanflashed stock. Everything stock. After every clean install I can use the phone flawlessy for about 1 minute, before the screen freezes (animations still show, like background animations) and no touch is registered anymore, if i turn off n on the screen, i may be able to use touch for a few seconds again before it freezes. Im pretty sure my phone is broken, but im not sure what is broken, the touch obviously works, the screen works, its just some other problem, maybe a weird voltage builds up in the screen after you use it for a while because some little connection is fried i dont know. Im just curious what is wrong, maybe i should just send it in to a repair clinic.

Ghost input and screen moving on its own

Has anyone else seen this. The task switcher comes up by itself. When I am in a browser, it will scroll by itself. the desktop switches between screen..
Thoughts?
Thanks
Does this happen anytime? I've never had this, make sure your screen is clean xD Otherwise you could try the touchscreen booster app, it may fix it (calibrates screen)
Yeah tried that, but still have the issue on occasion
My bezzel was on too tight and it was causing the screen to warp and cause false inputs so you might want to check that
Hi,
I have the same issue.
My screen is moving and it lauches some applications/pushing some virtual buttons by itself.
Do you have any solution ?
Thank you in advance

Have you tried a reboot? This same problem happens to me if water gets on the screen, so as suggested give the screen a good wipe.
I have tried reboot, Cold reboot (I don't know what it is but I have tried...) and Hard reboot (wipe everything and I did not install/configure anything).
I cleaned the screen (5 minutes ago).
Nothing of these solved the problem... :-(
The screen moves... shifting from a desktop to another... launching apps... :-(
What is disapointing is that, sometime, the screen is good and stable for a long time (30 minutes) and begins to move without any interaction.
I think I will ask if someone has been murdered in my appartment

Have you cleaned the bezel too? Otherwise it may look like a hardware issue maybe with loose cables or the digitiser is just broken.
Sorry if I couldn't help.

The metal strip round the outside of the screen
The black space that surrounds the the screen.
OK, I did not wipe both black surrounding and metal cover.
I do it ASAP and tell you in an hour if this is ok.
Thank you very much both of you

Unfortunately... no change..... :-(
I egin to believe the screen is too sensitive to electromagnetique perturbance....
I downloaded a soft (touchscreen tuner) showing where the pression is done on the screen.
Where the ghost uses the tablet, the pressure is done on a horizontal line, a little bit above the bar.
I had the me problem.
I managed to get rid of the ghost inputs by flashing another rom(i had installed arhd and then moved to liquid smooth), since my tranny is running liquid smooth i havnt had any ghost input ;D
Thank you all,
I changed the rom of the tablet. The ghost was also there... but perhaps less...
I contacted and he gave me a soft to re-calibrate the touch screen:
http://vegantab.gojimi.com/download/TouchRecalibrate.apk
At the end the ghost seems to have disapeared... but I am not sure what was the solution... the rom ? the soft ? or a high elecytromagnec perturbance in my home.....
Thank you all.
Just in case it's necessary, make sure you don't have something that can conduct near the screen. This includes dirty water or sweat. :/ I'm a sweaty guy so sometimes it messes with the screen when my finger tips are sweaty.
Hi,
I tried to clean the tablet and put it on my bed.
I watched it during less than 2 mn, without approaching less than 1 meter, and it began to move alone...
So I don't think I am the source of the ghost...
is there any real fix for this problem?
as anyone completely got rid of the problem?
samsung gslaxy note 2 i317m ghost input and screen moves voluntarily
I also have this problem with them screen moving at will. This is my second galaxy note 2. If anyone can tell me what a possible fix could be I would appreciate it. I have tried many roms along with dong a fresh installation using ODIN.

Random touches...

So i got.this off of warranty repair and they said this got no problems. I had this issue before repair. After repair and even after jelly bean...
I have filmed a video on this happening and thought of "attacking" the store where i bought this. And forcing them to exchange my device.
I have seen guys having this problem a long time ago, but now its happening to me!
Have any of you had this...
i only have this kind of problems when my display is not cleaned well.

I haven't seen your video but I came here to post a thread about this. When not plugged into the keyboard, there are basically ghost touches perpetually, I literally can't do anything. I restarted and it's still a problem, but not when plugged into the keyboard. I'll repost if I can/can't figure anything out.

Disregard that its terrible even with the keyboard its taken like 15 mintes to type this does a factory reset help?
I have done over 7 factory resets and no help it always comes back, but I started to think about the screen cleaness becaause this screen is very sensitive, i can press this with my nails and all sorts of cables. It also registers a touch even if my finger hovers over the screen so it would make so much sense if a small dust bit has landed on the screen and make it go crazy...

Wooooow..... I returned it 3 times to the store until I got one with a screen that doesn't bleed on the edges and has a working gps, and now that I can't return it to the store any more I'm getting this BS? It was completely fine until yesterday... If the factory can't fix the problem and return me a perfect tablet I'm going to lose my mind. It's already going to take a month just to send it in and wait for the repair/return........... How completely ridiculous.
There's NO fix for this? It has nothing to do with the screen cleanness, it happens all the time every time regardless of how crystal clean the screen is, and it never used to happen even when the screen got pretty messy. Any other ideas before I say goodbye to it for a few weeks.
Yep i think we both have a faulty device... think im going to ask for a exchange. :banghead:

[Q] Snowy Screen (LCD/Touch working)

Hi guys
First of all: SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH...
As you can see in the title, my Nexus 5 (16 GB) is showing a snowy screen all the time. When i turn it on, the display lights up and the phone probably boots. After the while the display is dimming and then turns off (probably lockscreen...). I managed to slide my finger from a corner to the middle, so that i can say the touchscreen is working.
First I thought the screen was defect, so I ordered a new LCD screen. After replacing the old by the new screen I had to see, thats its not the LCD/touch/display what is defect.
So does anybody had the same problem or can tell me what this might be. I'm not even sure if it's the hardware or maybe the software of the phone. But due to the "process I described in the beginning" when I turn it on, I suggest it's the hardware.
If have no idea what happened to the phone and why it isn't working. (I bought it on the internet as a defect device)
I would be very thankful for any answers.
IMAGE: the "NEXUS 5" on the image is a screen protector!!!
When you bought it did they say what kind of damage it had? Like was it water damage? If its water damage then I'd take it apart and clean the board. The board can be corroded due to water dame and/or possibly the ribbon connectors that attach to the screen.

no,... I asked, but got no answer. When connecting the new screen I could see the inside, for me (I have no experiences with that) I looked quite good
I also checked all the connections.

I'd probably take it back apart and clean it with a soft toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol. REMOVE the battery before you clean it or you will be sorry. Then thoroughly dry it with a blow dryer (make sure it isn't set on hot. Warm or cool is fine).
To me it sounds more like a hardware defect rather than a software defect.

Also did you try getting it into BOOTLOADER Mode? The only software defect I can think of is the person flashing a custom ROM/Kernel and they messed with the voltage setting. A low voltage setting can cause the screen to be snowy/fuzzy looking.

hmmm... I took it apart, and blow it up. Maybe I'll be doing the alcohol things in a while.
I already tried getting into bootloader (pressing power + Vol down). But now I tried again:
When I keep pressing the two buttons, the screen is slowly blinking: "snow" --> black --> "snow"... three times, then it comes a short "snow" and then its black and stops.
I don't know what normally happend when you hold the buttons at the Nexus 5. Will there appear something three times and then turn off again when you keep holding???
btw: already thank you for your advices (but if it's the hardware, I'm afraid some chip/processor/...??? will be defect)
Solved!!!
Whuhhuuuuu!!! Solved. I bought a new "usb / charging flex cable - thing" (sorry I dont know whats the name) for just 20€ and the problem was solved.
Thank anyway for all your answers and adviced.

Hardware or Software issue in my OPO screen?

I got my OnePlus One today. What a happy day until this problem showed up.
My screen works just fine, but this happens every once a while. The screen looks like this for some seconds and goes back to normal then.
Any tips?
Its probably software. But wow that hurts my eyes looking at that picture.
Tell me about it. I almost went to an eye doctor. Lol
Are you able to reproduce the problem repeatedly? Does it happen only on the home screen or does it happen in other apps as well?
It appears when ever, where ever. If i take a screenshot of it, it won't appear in there. That's why i took a photo of it.
So, is this screen broken?
It could possibly be hardware then. The only way to really know is to flash a custom ROM or reflash the stock ROM, if it happens on another ROM then its for sure hardware.
Ok. Thanks! I think i'm the only one with this issue. Haven't found anything similar from the web, when searching.
The problem appeared once again and i rebooted the device. The screen had this ghosting in the bootup aswell.
I've done factory reset aswell and the problem continues.
If it occurs outside the OS then its for sure hardware
ALready

Screen Completely Dead

Well...that was nice while it lasted.
Had the phone delivered last night, set it up. Around noon this afternoon, the screen turns black while typing. I turn the screen on and off but only see faint horizontal lights. I press down power button to turn off, reboot, no screen. Not even boot animation. No screen while attempting to get into recovery.
After I turn on, the phone does vibrate when touching parts of the screen or fingerprint sensor, so it's still alive somewhere....(also LED light does go red or green, and I hear a sound when plugging in to charge). Very occasionally I see horizontal lights in the bottom half of the screen or split second, bright white/pink flashes around the top half of the screen.
In the middle of this, the phone did go into safe mode (seemingly of its own accord) and the screen came on fully. However, after a minute or too, back to black. Haven't been able to replicate since.
I have initiated what I hope will be a painless replacement process. However, is there anything I could try? Any simliar experience on OP6 or previous OP devices? I can find next to nothing on this. Everyone having a problem seems to have either rooted (which I haven't done) or experiencing battery/power issues. I talked to a support rep who seems to think it's an OS issue, although I doubt it since I can't even go into recovery or see the boot logo. He later seemed to think something inside was fried....which is concerning given my grand total screen on time of well less than 10 hours.

Yea I do hope they replace, instead of sending it back with a half-assed fix. From what I can see doesn't seem all that easy to fix anyway though. I'm unable to wipe before sending it back because I can't unlock or get into recovery. I have all my stuff signed in. Should I be concerned?

If the first set of instructions fails it may be because you don't have USB debugging on which you won't be able to enable because it's under settings you can try rebooting the phone into fastboot and using these commands
To enter the fastboot mode:
adb reboot bootloader
Check whether the mobile phone is also in fastboot mode: fastboot devices
To delete the data: fastboot erase userdata
To delete cache: fastboot erase cache

Oh sorry, I misread the first, thought I still needed debugging for fastboot. But uh..I can wipe normally now since I have my screen back....Yea out of nowhere it's back...after 9 hours of constant struggle. I'm actually more concerned than relieved, as it still seems like a serious issue, and there (probably) goes my hope of a replacement unless the issue comes back while the phone is with them. Should I still send it back even if the issue does not come back? If it doesn't I'm thinking maybe I should do a normal return within the 15 day window, and just buy a new one. Thoughts?

Honestly I would wipe it do a software reinstall and just not put to much senstive data on it for a few days and see what it does. If you don't have any issues for say 10 days then don't worry about it. If you do then you have the no questions asked return period and if you pass that and something comes up with it you have the year warranty
