LTE Speed often <1mbps - RMA and replacement is worse! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've had Nexus 5 since last November - ordered on the day they became available.
Ever since I've had it, my LTE speeds have been horrible, and data in general has not been very good. I live & use mostly in urban core of Honolulu, and thought in part problem may have been that I was using Straight Talk on AT&T.
I could go into AT&T store - which isn't far from where I live - and the phones in the store from Samsung, etc., (no N5s there) would be getting 17mbps down or so while my Nexus 5 on Straight Talk/AT&T would be lucky to get over 1 mbps! I travel to continental US both urban and rural areas and pretty much the same dismal speeds. Every now and then I might see 5 6 or once even 7mbps downstream. Usually upstream on speedtest (Ookla) would be higher than down - 5mbps or higher.
So, I switched to AT&T gophone expecting to see better - but no - speedtests basically the same dismal speeds.
Go into AT&T store - compare to other phones - dismal on N5 vs stellar on the store phones.
They even let me put a SIM card from a display phone in my N5 - dismal LTE.
So, I think it must be my phone, and I get an RMA replacement this week.
With much anticipation, I unbox the new N5, don't do anything other than establish an account, download speedtest and pop the SIM in - boy does my balloon burst - the speed is WORSE than the one I did before switching the SIM!: 1.42mbps down, 2.31mbps up on the new N5 vs 2.16 down 2.26up on the old N5. And changing servers just made it worse. (See screenshot)
I set the new N5 to 3G - get HSPA and speedtest result is 7.90 down/1.09 up.
WTF!

I just don't get it. Is there something about me, the TWO N5s I have, or what? Or, is the N5 just bad on [some] LTE?
My status page shows pretty strong signal on the awful speedtest - -79dbm/61asu.
On positive note, I do think in actual browsing/use, the phone is faster with native AT&T/gophone vs straight talk as it doesn't have to use Tracfone's proxy server (in Florida i think). But there just is something wrong with these LTE speeds....
I also tried 4GMark speetest and benchmark and it's pretty dismal -> download 0.41Mbps / Upload 4.17Mbps.
Anyone have any ideas for me?

Well, I can mention that the replacement came with KK 4.4.2 and radio ...25.0.23. The speedtests above run with that radio. Then, updated OTA to 4.4.3 and radio got updated to ...50.1.13, which didn't make any difference in LTE speed. Then a 2nd update took the new phone to ...50.1.16 and 4.4.4 and still pathetic speed.
My original N5 from Nov'13 has had every radio known to this model and sucky LTE with every single one.

Which APN? I find it weird because I have Cricket which uses AT&T towers now and I get sometimes 8Mb down if I'm in a good signal area, so I know it is possible.

grab a tmobile micro sim from someone, and see if tmobile is the same or not. it could just be a local att issue.

Your account must not be provisioned correctly for LTE. And the APN you have selected may be incorrect. Check both of these.

Not the case. LTE shows up in the status bar. LTE shows in Settings/About Phone/Status -> Mobile Network Type
The APN is correct - "phone"

I will try and do that when I get a chance.
If it were a local AT&T issue as opposed to a NEXUS5 phone issue, one would think the same SIM in another [Samsung] phone at AT&T store doing a speed test within a minute of each other would not be getting 10 times the throughput.

As an example on HSPA my previous phone wouldn't speed test correctly. 0.1 Mbps was always the speed. Yet the status bar shows H and about>phone shows HSPA. And my APN was correct at Phone.
But ATT didn't have my account provisioned correctly on their end, in their system.
So it could easily be that your account isn't provisioned correctly by the carrier.

AT&T is full of crap!!!
Wait till more than one phone is connected to the lte network and see what happens. I priced out moving my 4 lines over to verizon a few months ago, and it would have cost me $100 more per month.
I see 2.5-3.5 down and usually around 1.3 up. I'm more than happy about that. Most I've ever seen down is about 5, best upload was over 3.
I understand your point, but at least you can see that Verizon is not capping the upload speeds of TB and giving preference to iCrap users.
How can this be true? The picture clearly shows the Inspire 4G in Edge but the captions for the photo say the phone was in HSPA+?
I'm not saying that any 4G phone on AT&T can reach those LTE speeds, but the phone can pull better speeds with HSDPA, not Edge.
the makers of that app have reported problems in reporting the correct upload speed for the thunderbolt too, so the 45 mbps is innaccurate.
besides the main reason its this fast is because of the lack of competing lte signals for the phone as it is new, and att being behind in the lte game
I think the low signal has something to do with it too. I notice sometimes when I have 1 bar, even when connected to H+ I get intolerably slow speeds. But that pic is funny, good point with the Edge and the comment haha.

With 5 bars and H+ connected I get about 2 - 2.5 mb/s down and 320 kb/s up. Still, that's lousy compared to Verizon's 4g.

Speed
Hi, here in Puerto Rico My best speed was 4.6 Down 1.8 Up...
Thats good for me!!!
I love Inspire
Go into the Thunderbolt threads. The speedtest app can't measure correctly for LTE. When they go to speakeasy in the web browser they're pulling about the same speeds as us.
Sent from my Gingerbreaded Inspire using XDA Premium App
I had a chance to play with a buddy's phone for a few hours and the phone itself seemed slower whenever I pulled up a list, such as apps or pictures. Of course, his phone hasn't been rooted yet, so there may be some untapped potential.
Nice thing about the Inspire is the huge dev community due to Desire HD ROMs being compatible. Thunderbolt is different enough that they will most likely be starting from scratch.
ATT 4G is only HSPA+ not lte so it cant get speeds comparable
Update from the article:
"We've been told by Ookla that the Thunderbolt's massive send buffer is responsible for the erroneously high uplink speeds -- they've got a fix in the works and it'll be available as an update to the Speedtest.net app soon."
I personally don't want to pay $150 for a front-facing camera. I'll stick with my $99 Inspire.

[Q] How to get LTE?

I'm confused about how I access the LTE network.
I'm on Rogers in North Vancouver. I'm using Sky ICS 6.75 stock. I haven't installed any special radios/modems.
I should have an LTE plan (was to take effect 15Apr). I have my Network Mode set to GSM/HSPA/LTE (auto mode). And I have my Access Point set to ltemobile.apn. I've gone in to *#2263# and set LTE Band preference to "LTE ALL" then back to Automatic.
After all that, how do I tell if I'm on LTE? The network graphic shows 4G but it did before I moved to LTE as well.
When I do speedtests, I don't get any better speeds than when I'm not on LTE.

Seems like you're in an area that doesn't yet have LTE..
Get speedtest from play store.
see what your speed is.
You should see an lte icon beside the 4g.

Ah, I see now what my mistake was. It was in believing the agent in late March who said she moved me to an LTE plan. I called back today, I wasn't on an LTE plan, but the agent did some magic and now, apparently, I am. We'll see in a bit.
They shouldn't have to change your plan.... You already have the hardware, it's just a matter of being in an LTE area to receive the signal.
before u go any further, please tell me u already have an LTE sim card with rogers, released in the last 6 months. Without that LTE won't work no matter what
Just got my phone less than 2 hours ago. LTE worked right out of the box.
They had to give me a new LTE SIM card though. I'm guessing you didn't get one?
They didn't have to change anything with my plan though, idk why they would tell you that.

Well .. that turned out to be my second problem. I was sure I had an LTE SIM card when I first got the phone 5 months ago. I remember discussing it with the agent. Turns out I didn't. I have it now and I get LTE - sometimes. It seems to come and go but at least I know it's out there now.

Wow - is that right? And they tried to sell me the LTE version of my plan for $15 more a month! They eventually found the same plan for the same price. I wonder what they're doing.

They try to get you to buy a plan with more gb's to get more money out of you. You don't need to do that though.

Data issue that T-mo and Google couldn't fix

Data speeds are slow and most downloads end up failing. Went from 1st level support to advanced level tech support for each company and they could not figure out my data issue. Everything from powering off, airplane toggle, verifying or deleting and creating APNs, factory reset, checking that I was not throttled, new SIM card, flashing fresh Google image, checking coverage maps, checking for tower maintenance, going to another tower's area, t-mo "resetting" connection on their end. Google even suggested RMA. It doesn't matter the website or type of download. Anything else that was missed that I could try before ordering new phone?

you wouldnt have anybody on a different carrier that you know that you could borrow their sim card for a few seconds. Cuz you should run a speed test on a different network. if its slower then their phone, its googles problem, if it isnt, its tmobiles problem

I've used nexus 4, HTC one, s4, lumia 925 and now nexus 5 in Atlanta area. I'm usually never on WiFi, and I did a few speed tests. My experience in both hspa and LTE has been great, with nexus 5 keeping signal better and always having better download speeds than HTC one, s4 and lumia. I wonder why you guys have had opposite experience.

AT&T slow LTE download but high upload

I just got a nexus 5 on at&t and I am getting some weird speed test results. My download speed on LTE is getting around 3-4 mb but my upload speed is around 15-17. How can this be? My APN settings seem correct. Could it be anything with the simcard or just network issues? I am in the Cleveland Ohio area so its full blown LTE . I have been expecting at least around the 17-20 LTE speed at minimum. Any advice?

i have seen this kind of behavior on my network when i am throttled for speed. but it could be different for you.
Does this time to time for me on s4. After a while it clears up. I think it's something on the att network end.

So just as a followup to my original post... i chatted with an online AT&T support rep about my situation and it appears they are saying that my Nexus 5 is not shown to be connected to their LTE network..even though my phone shows I am connect to LTE. They show it is registered for LTE on their end but it is not actually connected to LTE at all... its only connected to their GSM network (4g HSPA / 4g HSPA+). They are opening a ticket for it and i should hopefully hear back from them in the next few days. Has anybody ever heard of this happening? The phone actually showing its connected to LTE but actually on the networks end, it really is not? If this really is the case, there would be no way to actually know this. Only from my feeling that my speed tests did not seem right to what i was expecting from LTE.

Im interested in hearing what you find out.
Thanks for going through the steps.
I will let you guys know what the outcome is... i just did a few more speed tests through download Cleveland, OH (which is LTE) and my results are still very strange... about 3-4 mbps down while 12-14 mbps upload.... it just almost seems like my download speeds are that of HSPA where my upload speeds are more on the line of LTE speeds. Very strange.
i made a very interesting discovery when playing with my apn settings... my two default apns after putting my att sim card in were ATT Phone and ATT WAP.... if i were to run speed test after speed test using these default apn settings.. i would notice my download speed start up around 5-7 mbps but the quickly drop down to around 3.... and it has been consistently doing that.. while my upload speed would be higher.... now if I just change the ATT Phone APN to pta instead of phone and then run the speed test, it get around 10-12 download speed with a similar upload speed to the first.... it almost seems like the phone apn is throttling or capping my download speed but the change to pta seems normal.. with upload speeds being uneffected.... anybody have any clue what could be happening? i mentioned this to a rep about am i being throttled speedwise and they said no of course... i am still waiting to hear back regarding my ticket but i will be sure to mention this to them.... just hoping somebody knows whats going on out there and can help out in the meantime.... very strange..................... and it has to be something with the phone apn because my wife has an att moto x and i matched her apn settings to a tee and she gets 17 mb down while mine is still around 3... but the change to pta gets it much closer to her speeds with her att branded moto x. will be curious to hear your thoughts out there in xda land!!!
I have AT&T as well. I used the default APN. I get anywhere from 20mbit to 30mbit on LTE around here both upload and download.
I would be *VERY* careful when you call AT&T. Their system does not recognize the Nexus 5 since they don't sell it, and when giving the IMEI to set the provisions in their system for data and services it sometimes gives it a "dumb phone" data plan which only lets it connect to 3G. (It would show HSPA or HSPA+ or 3G on status bar though). Some people were forced to grab friends IMEI's and tell them they had some phone AT&T supports like a Galaxy S4 or something that uses LTE to get reprovisioned for LTE support.
Sounds to me like you're just on a bad set of towers. I used to get 30-50mbit with my Galaxy S4 when they first turned LTE on in my area back in June 2012. Right before I sold my S4 I was only getting 20-30mbit, and I get the same with my Nexus 5 now as more and more users in the area started getting and using the LTE service, it bogged the towers down. Perhaps channels they reserve for upstream/upload only aren't affected as much as downstream/download channels?

Yeah Im for sure not on a dumb phone data plan... I do show I am connected to LTE. Would you mind sharing what your APN settings are and also how did you activate your Nexus 5? Did you just previously have another AT&T LTE and just swapped sim cards? Yea exactly. I also kept my IMEI on file from that phone in case I ever need to call support so they still think I have the phone since the Nexus phones are totally unsupported on their end. They refuse to give the least amount of support even to any phone that has a unlocked or unlockable bootloader on their network.

If anyone is on ATT I was getting 1.7 average download speeds. Go into settings and make sure your APN is set to this ↓

The signal is significantly better than my S3, both in WIFI and mobile (3G) data.i don't know about the M7 but the Nexus 5 is known for it's excellent connectivity so it's pretty hard to top that.
I am having the same issue. My OPO has trouble holding LTE and switches between H and H+ constantly. It causes data to lag, noticeable when scrolling through social networking feeds or using remote desktop. My speed tests are also much slower than my S4 using my SIM. Here my friend who also has AT&T LTE met me and we tested speeds on the same server. He has the M8. We are both on the same APN.
Same for me, in the same places my Xperia Z1 and LG G2 both got much better LTE reception. CM11s is more conservative in regards to bars/dbm on the status bar...which is fine. BUT the constant switching between HSPA and LTE is causing me to miss some SMS messages, and that's unacceptable. Also, crap LTE speeds on AT&T (when I can actually hold on to a LTE signal long enough).
Keep in mind, I'm in the SF Bay Area, we have LTE EVERYWHERE.
I've had my RMA open since 7/20, all they've done is email me once a day with questions regarding where I'm using it/what cases I have on the phone. No resolution.

Follow step should be help
For the constant network switching issue between lte and hspa, dial *#*#4636#*#*,then click phone information. In there, select your band selection to be "lte/gsm auto PRL"... That should make the lte connection much more stable.
There is a real problem here, maybe more than one.
My signal strength is horrible in areas where other phones are fine. I'm on T-Mobile usually connecting to LTE Band 4. At home my phone is always -117db or worse and disconnects frequently. When it disconnects from LTE it doesn't switch to the available GSM even though setup for LTE/GSM auto PRL. I can force a connection to GSM but the levels are still bad at -95 or worse but stays connected.
I have metro PCs so when I do *#*#4636#*#* it does nothing to correct the problem. I use to get late everywhere with no drop in signal with my Samsung mega and when I converted over to the one I've had nothing but issues and makes me regret buying the phone and selling my mega. Whats a great phone if you can't get stable lte service.

I am assuming you guys have all tried the different radios and different roms available to you in the forum? I know it may not work for some but have you guys tried? T-Mobile customers can get the tower in there house if you have bad reception there. So some issues can be resolved maybe not all of them

So, what's interesting is that the phone does not list 1700/2100, which is T-Mobile (In Denver). It only lists 1900 (AT&T). Could that be part of the problem?
FYI: It's *#*#4636#*#*
