[Q] What and how to check on a used Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a used Nexus 5. I have never spent more than 100€ for a used phone and i wonder how to check this device properly. I am good with computers but I actually can not into these expensive shiny smartphones .
I already checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/to-buy-hand-n5-look-t2718537
Now here is what I want to know about the used device that was sold as "as new":
- check the device for general errors
- water damage
- had it been rooted or modified before
- is it stolen (just wondering if its possible to check this)
- check hardware somehow (maybe a kind of benchmark and.. what results should I expect?)
- i can check the camera by taking some shots, the speakers by playing some stuff.. anything else you would test?
- overall running time
- is the battery okay/how long should it last
- anything specific to the device..
So.. what do? Anything else?

What you should do is cross your fingers and hope it doesn't get blacklisted.

Why would that happen? And blacklisted by whom?

Check for cracks around the SIM tray. It's a quite frequent damage that can occur.

People can get the phone financed on a contract, then they sell the phone to you for a profit. After a short period of time they can stop paying off their bill and about a month later the phone is essentially "stolen" and becomes blacklisted. Then your phone becomes a WiFi only device.

I usually get asked that when making a big purchase. It's not like they are going to spam you with phone calls or ads. Well, they didn't do that to me yet.

Well they need something to match with the DNA imprint your phone takes and sends to the CIA. So they can track you down when the world is taken over by our lizard-men overlords....
Or maybe they just want to send you coupons?

You really need to make sure you use one of 100 or so apps that find your phone if you lose it. The technology has been there for a long time....and it works.
You lose your phone....no biggie....goto a computer....you see where your phone is on a map....ya go get your phone.....for the most part its that simple.
The US version comes with Lookout, there are many more. Sounds like you are unaware that apps like these exist..... Just a friendly FYI.....

Asurion wont cover your phone unless your SIM card is in your phone when you loose it, I learned this the hard way after my phone was stolen when my sim card wasnt in the phone, they said they cant replace it under any circumstances no matter who i talk to... I dont know what to do, should I just file another claim and say my SIM was stolen along with the phone and have T-Mobile suspend my line? or am I just screwed?

If that's what the coverage contract says then you're stuck unless you decide to lie, which is fraud and puts you at risk of legal complications. If the contract does not state this exclusion then you may have some recourse, but legal action may be required if they refuse to cover it.
Keep us posted. Lots of people have this insurance and if they are scammers posting it here would be appreciated.

How much did you have to pay in total for the replacement? Like deductible or other fees.
You have to wait the 24 hours because they have to request a device from T-Mobile / HTC then send it to you. Its like pulling teeth because the phone is brand new and they are watching for people to return their "lost" phone to the store or sell it while they wait for the new one.
Sucks that you lost it, you will probably get a new one that they turned into a refurbished one because I doubt they have refurbished devices yet. While I was at Sprint I knew they usually didn't have them till around the sixty day mark.

Going to buy second-hand N5. What should I look out for?

I'm going to buy a N5 soon from someone, since all the retailers are either out of stock or very overpriced. Although I have bought other phones from him, I like to be super-safe.
So, are there any issues specific to the N5 that I should check for before I buy it? How do I check the life-timer? Can that timer be reset w/o unlocking the bootloader?
What's a life timer?

Not sure newer devices have them, or I have just not noticed/found it. Check the usual stuff, sensors, buttons, physical state, charge port etc. Tbh should be OK if you have bought from the same guy previously.
EDIT: Check the screen colours, some people report yellowish tint's - I haven't experienced it though.

Neither of those services are available in my country.
Hello,
1. Make sure the device isn't cracked, scratched.
2. Check for Loose buttons.
3. Check whether the GPS is getting locked or not.
4. Make sure there is no bleeding on the screen
5. Ask for the original receipt/bill and see whether the phone has warranty in your country or not.
By taking a look at the bill date you can get to know the date of purchase and can get a rough idea about the life timer or whatever it's called.
If you have all the above points covered, I guess you are good to go!?
Also, make a phone call with it to make sure the other party can hear you ( very important )

My last Google Phone - Customer Service is Terrible

I have had many Google phones: G1, Nexus One, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 5x, Nexus 6p, and now a Pixel, which I bought second hand, and have been using for about 4 months.
Yesterday, after an OTA, the phone died and I cannot fix it. I called Google. They say that because the phone is associated with another account, they cannot do anything.
They say the seller has to call them to transfer the phone to me. I contacted the seller, but so far no response. I hope she ends up responding, but if not, I will end up with a 500 dollars brick.
Terrible support from Google. My last Google Phone unless they change their support.
Have you tried to unlock the bootloader and flash the factory image?

Could you elaborate on 'the phone died'? ... your post is very vague, so I think if you are actually in need of help (rather than just venting/complaining), we might need some details...
does your pixel turn on? ...
can you use 'fastboot'? ...
what was the OTA for? ... was it the oreo update or what?
I'm not surprised that google can't help you, if they see your phone as belonging to someone else, that really doesn't qualify as terrible support.
For all they know; the device could be stolen...
Anyway, maybe if you provide mire information here - someone can assist you...
That is not Google's fault! You should have done your homework and got it transferred it to your name. They don't know how you acquired the phone, you could have stole it in the street, google has no idea.
You will not be able to do anything until the previous owner login to your phone and then add yours. It happend to me also when I sold my 6p, did not know why the phone keeps asking my account name even after a full reset

I understand why you are upset, but this is really not Google's fault. Try to think about it objectively for a moment -- would you really want them providing support when the caller is not the person the phone is registered to/associated with? That would be a massive security breach waiting to happen.

It won't turn on. I can try power + volume down (or up?), and the Pixel will make a vibration, but it is not detected on my PC whatsoever. I have read over XDA and it appears the OTA killed somehting (boot loader?). It was not unlocked. The ota was not OREO, It already had OREO, it was the last month security fixes.
I mean I get your frustrated BUT try taking ANY product back to a store or contacting any manufacturer for warranty support without proof of purchase. You might be done with Google phone but all cell phone manufacturers would give the same response in an identical situation. Buying a used product unfortunately has certain drawbacks. Your lucky Google is willing to help if the original purchaser calls them. Best of luck.

Maybe methodically go through each step and see, if you notice anything... I know when I first installed Oreo, my phone didn't boot. There wasva few minute period where I thought it was bricked. I played with key combos, power button, charging, etc... but after a couple of minutes it booted (thankfully).
PS: to everyone not trying to offer some advice or help, cool it... regardless of the device being used or OP being frustrated, it would be better to either offer suggestions and/or help, or just not reply.

If you didn't reported, it is your problem, not mine. And also, why let me use it for 6 months, and then say we don-t know if it is yours? If you are going to implement a policy like that, do like apple does, and don-t let me use it whatsoever. If that was the case, upon receiving the phone and being asked for a password to unlock it, i could have contacted the seller immediately, and being covered by Paypal, nothing like this would have happened. But don't implement it like this which is very stupid.
Think for a moment. Haven't the phone broke, I could have been using a "stolen" phone forever, but since it broke, that is when they care. Horrible policy.

Well, then it's probably not a borked screen. Maybe if the firmware is corrupted, it's still allowing charging. Idk... it's too bad the pixel doesn't allow hardware reset (like my s5 did. Sometimes that made a difference, when it I messed up and the phone wouldn't boot).

Reviews don't mean much. They can be faked. Bots and the like... I would just avoid buying used electronics, in general... so much can go wrong, even with a brandnew phone. Hardware defects, firmware problems, etc, etc... buying stuff used is a huge risk...
I think you have a couple of options left, assuming you've exhausted all other avenues / troubleshooting;
1. You can bug google more and hope that you encounter someone sympathetic, after explaining that the seller hasn't replied / explaining the situation... some support people are more helpful than others, it might require multiple attempts.
2. You can take your phone to a 3rd party, but authorized google technician... they might have resources/tools not available to you or I... they might be able to determine the problem and fix it (but obviously, it will cost you).

Question S22 Ultra Samsung lock help

Hi, I purchased a Samsung S22U on Facebook a month ago and the phone got locked by Samsung this morning, saying it was "lost in transit or a trade-in device was never received". Samsung doesn't seem to care and won't even look at all the pictures and messenger conversation I have.
I haven't flashed ROMs or rooted a phone in a decade, but I used to be very familiar with it. Will flashing a custom ROM bypass Samsung's lock on the device, or do you know another method to get around this? This has become a very expensive paperweight. Running multiple IMEI checkers, it doesn't seem to be blacklisted.

So exactly how long you bought it until now? As I know, Samsung allows only 15 days from the day when the previous owner received his phone for trade-in program. After 15 days, they will lock it immediately. Here you said a month ago.

Yeah, not sure if that's because I waited forever to activate or what. I paid $800, but he had it listed for $900.
You need to contact the person you bought it from. Samsung can't do anything to help you since you didn't buy it from them.

The seller doesn't care, it's meant to be a scam. He's just ignoring my messages. I think I found a way to fix it, but it's going to cost me a little. Seems to be reliable though

Good luck with that. It sounds like you're about to fall for another scam.

Nah, it's a legit business. Hundreds of reviews, thousands of followers, dozens of videos dating eight years back. Can't believe I found it, but it's legit. Talked to the guy on the phone. The real question is: Will the fix last during updates.

So... Phone works great for the most part. Two things can't be done: System updates and using smart switch for data transfer. Otherwise, it is fully functional

If you're still interested, let me know. As said above, you can't do system updates and the smart switch won't work, but otherwise it's fully functional. They are working on the update part, but it's not possible yet

Hi. Can you tell me the person or the business info from were you able to get it working again, as i am in the same situation. Thank you.
Yeah, sorry. I stopped logging into this forum. I also just bought a new phone since I couldn't risk a random nighttime update causing me to lose stuff. Here is the guy... Tell him I sent you. It won't get you any discount or anything, but maybe he will remember me too eventually haha https://www.facebook.com/MNMobileGuy
