Hello everybody, I wrote this also in the official OPO forum, but nobody seems to have my problem. Basically when the phone vibrates (during typing, with notifications or anything else), most of the times I can hear a sort of creak/squeak coming from the phone, probably corresponding to the vibrating mechanism inside the phone. If I try to push through the back cover nothing happens, it's very solid and does not squeak as my old Nexus 5 did. It seems like something coming from the inside. I think it could be related to the vibrating mechanism touching somewhere on the motherboard or any other piece of hardware inside the phone.
Anyone else has the same problem? That's quite disappointing
Hey there,
Oddly enough I have noticed the same thing. Not sure if its worth me kicking a stink up over it or not yet.
Just received my OPO today and I have the same issue. I had this issue on some Nokia 920 and some older HTC phones. After doing a warranty replacement on those devices the problem went away. Its definitely a hardware issue in my opinion.
Still deciding if I want to keep this phone. Also have the yellow hue problem at the bottom of the phone and some very dim capacitive touch screen buttons.
Its a shame. I'm really enjoying this phone for other reasons.

1) The yellow hue at the bottom of the screen is supposed to go away over time.
2) The capacitive buttons are intended to be dim so that's definitely not a defect.

Thank you for the quick response. After using the phone for the past couple of hours it seems the yellow hue has already gone done. Either that or my eyes are adjusting to it.
I wish you could adjust the brightness of the buttons. Maybe a future software update will fix that. I also have turned off the capacitive button but you lose some screen real estate by doing that.

On my newly exchanged sensation, I have noticed that the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the phone are not evenly lit up. The home button is slightly brighter than the the menu button. Also the search button is a little brighter than the back button. My first unit that I returned cause of battery issues had perfect , even lighting on all four buttons. Also, on this unit, it makes a creaking noise when I press the screen on three bottom left side. I might return this one also.
Has anyone noticed the same uneven button lighting on their phone?

Yeah, the menu and back are lighter, but very minimal.

Yup. I know from reading at the thunderbolt forums that htc used 2 LEDs to light up the four buttons and they had the same issue so this maybe the case also. Anyone else with the same issue?

You better take it back. Make sure to explain that your lights are uneven.

Ya, I should do it, especially since it also has that lower right screen creak/click thing going on . This whole experience has not been that great. I mean, I love the device but would love to have 1 great unit free of these defects. Then I will truly enjoy this masterpiece!

I'm not saying it isn't an issue. but of all the issues i've seen so far, if when I get mine this is all it suffers with I'd be happy. Not too sure about the creak tho, that would be a bit off putting. HTC are normally good built quality, so a creak would be annoying.
There have been a fair few faults with this device so far, but it does seem that none of them are affecting all handsets, so hopefully there aren't any major faults going on
I think I see what you mean OP about the uneven backlit keys. For my device its minimal and you can barely notice it. I do however have light leaking from the seam next to the left of the home button. Does anyone else have this?

Same for me, very minimal. I think it's the same for all of us, actually I hadn't noticed it until I read your post and had a careful look at it.
But your creaking noise, if not coming from the back cover not completly locked correctly, so coming from the screen itself, is more worrying, your screen must be badly stuck, like for some people on the forum, so you should take it back
(see if dust is coming under the screen in the creaking area)

I also have the light leaking but it is on the other side beside the search key. It is very tiny so it doesn't bother me at all. I think I will keep this rather than exchange it for another problem.

I also have the light leaking from the seam near the home button. At first it looked like a glare, but it's obviously a crack where the light is leaking through. It's bothersome to me (my annoyance is increasing) and I think I'm planning on returning (exchanging) the phone. it's concerning to me, because I don't really know where that opening goes, i.e. where will the dust, sweat, lint, etc. migrate to once it inevitably gets inside there. Of course, everything else seems ok for now, so I wonder what other problems I'll get with a new unit.

Yea, i just came back from Walmart. I returned the second unit , couldnt deal with it, and ordered a new one from T-mobile on a new two year contract. They offered me an early full upgrade (9 months early) with a new contract. Final price 200
I'm happy. Let's hope the has perfect build when it arrives early next week.

Who got the same problem? I already swapped 3 times for a new HTC Desire S in the store. Today I got the 4th one. But still the same annoying problem. I can see that the screen doesn't perfectly fit on the unibody. I can also see the backlight shine through the border of the screen (at 3 spots) - so called light leak. The seller said that it's because of the unibody and the screen is pasted above the body (he suggested another phone because all the unibodies will have the same problem, but I like to stick with the Desire S).
I think I have to live with it, because all the 4 phones got the same fault.
Maybe you all should check the screen closely (the whole border).
If someone knows a solution, please let me know. I will wait a little bit, maybe I will put a bit of kit in the gaps...
Greetings,
Faraaz

Yeah could be. I also wanted the black version, but it wasn't available in the shops I went. I will ask if they can order a black one. I have 30 days return policy.

So it has nothing to do with the color lol.
Nothing too obvious though....
my gray DS is okay, only little problem is with back cover...
xD well, so there are some good and some bad no matter color
I have sent an e-mail to HTC with the so called light leaked problem. I'm curious what the respond will be.

I've a black one and it has minimal gaps, such that I can see a tiny orange LED light leakage from the top of the screen edge and at the bottom right hand side I can see slight light leakage from the hard button backlights.
But these are only visible in a dark room after careful angling and rotating of the device...So ultimately, doesn't effect the operation of the phone, so doesn't bother me.
Black one here and never noticed anything wrong with the screen fit/build.
Is it just an aesthetic problem or does this cause issues with the phone operation?

Looking at it, I kinda see what you mean, but it doesn't bother me all that much. A thin black edge around the actual display on all sides, and if you tilt the phone you can sometimes see the light escaping from the soft buttons' backlights.
Doesn't bother me at all thankfully.
My girlfriend's wildfire S's screen mismatch however... that winds me up just being in the same ROOM as the damn thing.

Got a reply today. It is in dutch, but in short:
"HTC is not familiar with the issue. You got to send the phone for repair and then we will look at it".
I also put links of xda forum, android hilfe and google (search: light leak htc) in my message. But HTC pretends that they know nothing. It's ashame. No more HTC for me. The 4th HTC Desire S with problems is not right. It's not a low budget phone...

This unfortunately is a common problem but not that severe, it effects devices sold in many countries, although after your experience with that one shop I'd follow advice given and would try an alternative shop or try to possibly buy online.

I did this, got it back after 10 days. They hadn't done squat, it still leaks exactly the same as before.
And for the record, it's a black one.
I've had 3 Desire S's, all black. One of them was fine, the other has a slight leak. My current one is a little worse. Also noticed that the screen isn't aligned properly. Sending it back to the seller for a replacement soon. I think it's just a hit or miss thing.
So I am just wondering if I'm just have a run of bad luck. Bought my one x the release day. Few days later started seeing dead pixels all over the screen. Took it to att and they swap it out no problem.
Second one seem fine the first day but then I notice tons of light leakage like the screen wasnt in all the way around the bottom and right side. The screen would also wiggle and make a popping sound if I pressed on it on the bottem left corner, right corner, and top right corner. The plastic on the bottom would also move if I pressed it.
I happen to luck out and found an att close by that had one in (damn you apple). Now this one the screen is clicking even worse than the second one. If I wipe the screen off I can hear it clicking and popping with even the lightest pressure. Also have light leakage across the bottom again and what looks like single dots almost like a dead pixel even though there is no pixel by the buttons where light is shining through the black. I expect to have att replace this one also.
So I was just wondering am I have terrible luck or should I expect this from all hox? I love the device but really wont keep it if I keep getting shotty devices.
That's some pretty bad luck... Still on my first. No problems except for the tiniest bit of bleed on one side, and I cannot over emphasize tiny. Hope it stays that way too.
Still on first as well

You must have been on a streak of bad luck for your HOX...
I am currently on my second. The first one had a defect in the upper-right side (near the volume rocker and front-facing camera) where it would very loudly "creak" whenever I picked it up and/or was using it. And the screen/display in that area was "mushy" as I was able to be push the internal casing into the polycarbonate shell a few millimeters without hardly any force at all.
I bought it at Best Buy and when I brought it in I just asked IF it would be considered a defect and they suggested replacing it without me even asking. The second one I got is very solid in comparison to the issues from the first one but the volume rocker does "wiggle" a bit and the bottom (near the microphone) "creaks" but only if I apply direct pressure on it. I understand the nature of how the internal "frame" is placed into the "shell" so I don't think those are issues at all so I am very pleased with the build quality. Also, I keep it in a Otterbox Defender now so I don't even notice either issue at all.
This sucks that I'm having this luck but thanks for the feed back.

Some of these small creeks or wiggles are somethings that might just need to be accepted. We are too often perfectionists. Not realists.

I agree that we can sometimes expect too much.
The One X is unique in it's design in that the "internal frame" that holds the display, screen, motherboard, battery, etc. actually "snaps" into the outer polycarbonate shell, not with screws like almost all other smartphones.
The "creak" that was coming from my first HOX was an undeniable defect, it was so loud the BB employees could hear it over all the crowd noise and it would do that just by handling it normally, not to mention the screen had way too much "give". The "creak" in my second HOX is probably just a "normal" side-effect of the design, as it is very faint and only happens when I try, and I have totally accepted that (as I have already mentioned I see it as a non-issue).
But to be honest, I don't think the consumer should just "accept" flaws and poor build quality, things should not "creak" or "wiggle" (that were never meant to) within a few days of use. Some people can deal with it but we should not have to, so if someone is unhappy with their product then they have every right to exchange it or return it.
I'm on my second, first one swapped for connection issues (had to toggle airplane mode for it to work any time I lost service or was in an area with poor reception)... Only to find out that my second does the exact same thing.. considering swapping again because 1.85 screwed it up even more.

I agree that often perfectionist and it's my downfall. I'm ok with the very small light leak I have on this one . But just touching my screen near top and hearing it "pop" just shouldn't happen and afraid it will get worse as time goes on. And seeing as I bought this phone out right I don't feel as if I'm being to unreasonable. I mean I must of traded in 20-35 iPhones in my time for even smaller defects. Going back to the iPhone 3g.

Uuuummmm..... My HTC does not have any of the problems that people have mentioned in the thread. No bleeding light, creeking noises or pixel issues. Not one single issue. I have even dropped it about 5 times and it skidded about 10 feet each time. Still good as new. Actually the builded quality for me compared to the Sony phone is night and day. Sorry to hear about everyone bad luck. So far its been the best phone that I have owned.

I will comment that the camera lens is of a stupid design. That lens got scratched in about 5 minutes of ownership. Just lucky that the scratch is not showing up in photos.

Mine has gotten considerably worse over the last few months. I'm acutally going to call LG about it right now.
I have one or two maybe even three pieces of a spec of dirt or may be a pixel. I'm leaning more towards dirt because with any screen color test the dots always remain the same color. Black. They don't change. And they aren't green or white etc. Always remain black.... Help?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I know it would be kindof difficult but is there any way you can post pictures? But honestly it doesnt really matter which it is to be honest. I recomend just asking for an RMA from Google.
Is it possible to RMA later months from now for the same reason? I'd rather wait for quality control to get better or a newer batch. Unless I got like ten bad pixels
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
the Nexus 5 comes with a 1 year warrenty so waiting a few months to RMA should not be a problem.
Yeah i figured as much. I just hope to RMA maybe sometime 2014, rather wait and see if it gets worse. Or remains the same. One or two pixels even three depending on location no big deal. But if I have 5-10 or more by then... I'd want to swap out for a revised not defective device from Google. However at this moment with them rushing these out. Playing the RMA game isn't worth it.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Dead pixels are black. Stuck pixels are any colour but black!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Update. So what I thought was 3-4 dead pixels turns out to be pieces of dirt under the screen. And I bet majority of people mistake these for dead pixels.... Way to tell easy is to turn some bright lights on. Make sure your screen is spotless. And turn it on and find the dead pixel on the screen. Turn it off then turn it all different ways to find the dirt under the display which you think is a dead pixel..
I'm kind of relieved to find out its only dirt. I'd rather have dirt then dead pixels. I'm weird. But whatever
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
still going to eventually request an RMA or are you just living with em?
For now living with it. Because its only dirt. Maybe RMA in the future if it really bothers me. The dirt still sucks. But I'm happy its not like dead pixels..
